CNNW Early Start With John Berman And Christine Romans May 20, 2014

Im john berman. Im christine romans. Its tuesday, may 20th. Its 5 00 a. M. In the east. This morning were watching a critical primary day with voters deciding key races from coast to coast. Election day polls opening just hours from now in six states. And at stake is, you know, who will be your candidates for major congressional and senate seats and also for governors office, and just maybe, maybe some early indications about who might end up controlling the senate after the key midterm elections in november. Cnns Political Editor Paul Steinhauser has been up all night analyzing all the preelection data to give us a sense of the races to watch. And paul, i think were all watching whats going on in kentucky. Oh, no doubt about it. This is game day. As you mentioned. Listen, weve got a lot of key contests, but i think the most important, the marquee battle is in kentucky. Thats where youve got this true antiestablishment verse establishment battle going on, and who else is more establishment than Mitch Mcconnell, the Senate Minority leader, the Top Republican in the senate . Five terms, 30 years here in d. C. Hes being challenged by matt bevin. He is a businessman. Hes got a lot of tea party support, a lot of antiestablishment groups are backing bevin. Lots of big bucks being spent on both sides here, by the candidates and by the outside groups. But you know what . According to the latest polls, mcconnell is way up, 20 to 30 points. You pick the poll. He also has the support of kentuckys other republican senator, a guy called rand paul, who, you know, is pretty influential among those on the right. So, expect mcconnell probably to have a pretty easy night. But you know what, it wont be that easy for mcconnell come november. Thats when hell face off in the general election against his democratic challenger. Her name is alison lundgren grimes, the secretary of state in kentucky. Got a lot of support, including from a guy named bill clinton. Guys . In 2012, we saw this wave of tea Party Challenges across the country. Is that happening today . It is happening today, and not just in kentucky, also in idaho its happening. Thats where youve got an eightterm congressman, a guy named mike simpson. He is considered establishment by those on the right, the tea party activists. Hes facing a challenge from a very conservative man who says simpson is not conservative enough. Kentucky, big bucks spent on both sides, but simpson has the backing of the u. S. Chamber of commerce and from this guy. Take a listen. The stakes are very high in this election because washington spending is out of control. You can take it from me, the conservative choice for congress is mike simpson. Youre also seeing this antiestablishment verse establishment battle playing out today in oregon, in the Senate Battle there, and theres a wild freeforall in georgia on the republican side, an open seat. And youve got more moderate candidates right now ahead in the polls over the more conservative candidates. What does this matter come november . Heres why. Christine, you mentioned that the last two election cycles, you had some highprofile primaries where the conservatives, the Tea Party Types want out, and come november, they lost to democrats. Republicans arguably lost five senate seats in the last two elections. This time around, it seems the establishment is ready. So far, theyve had the upper hand, guys. All right, Paul Steinhauser. It is election day, six days for watching. Youll be up all day with the rest of us as the results come in. Thank you so much, paul. You said you can smell it in the air. I thought it was pollen. Youre crying because its election day. Paul steinhauser, thanks. Tension building between the u. S. And china. Officials in beijing this morning furious, furious over the indictment of five Chinese Military officers accused of hacking into u. S. Companies to steal american corporate secrets. Theyre now summoning u. S. Ambassador max baucus and threatening to retaliate. Lets bring in David Mckenzie live from beijing this morning. I mean, i think its no surprise that the chinese are furious. In the past, when the u. S. And companies have complained about the Chinese Military being linked to stealing american, you know, private company and Public Company secrets, you know, the chinese have said youre making it up, its not true. Thats essentially what theyre saying again today. Reporter well, thats right, christine. And in fact, the quote is fabricated facts, and they are pushing hard, saying they could retaliate in some way if the u. S. , particularly the u. S. Justice department, continues with its move to try and prosecute these five individuals. You know, you saw these pretty dramatic wanted posters put out by the fbi, almost like they would for terrorists or other serious criminals. Some of those suspects, as they say they are, in their military uniform. So, this is new, because it is the u. S. Accusing china, Chinese State actors, of being involved in hacking and stealing what they call billions of dollars of corporate secrets and private information from both competitors in the u. S. And collaborators from the nuclear industry, from green energy and from all sorts of Strategic Industries in the u. S. , and this has put a strong signal to the chinese, they say, to stop doing this. The chinese, as you say, summoned the u. S. Ambassador to china for a latenight dressing down. And now theyre saying if anything goes from here, theyll take unspecified actions against the u. S. So, certainly, the rhetoric ratcheting up in this case. Lets talk about what these allegations are. These are allegations like stealing Nuclear Power plant plans, spying on steelworkers emails so they could see what the thinking was of the americans in terms of a trade dispute over steel, looking into the corporate and email banks of Solar Panel System because they want to see what americans have, and in some cases, the u. S. Says they want to steal it outright. Reporter well, thats right. I mean, the one theory behind the way china has done this, if you believe the report, is, you know, why spend billions on r d when you can just look into someones inbox and take it for yourself and jump ahead in the competitive stakes . And many executives ive spoken to have said in the past years they are, you know, pretty afraid of their secret information getting out when theyre working with chinese competitors. It must be said, though, this isnt the first time allegations like this have been leveled against other countries for stealing corporate secrets, and many people say that this kind of thing goes on all the time. The difference again here is that it appears, at least according to the u. S. Justice department, that the military here in china is working hand in hand with the stateowned corporations. So, its less of black hat hackers and more of a governmentsponsored program, if you believe that indictment. And the ceos of these companies have been pursuing aggressively their China Strategies for, you know, 10, 15, 20 years. At the same time complaining that the more exposed they are to china, the more exposed they are to hacking. Its a difficult situation, a real conundrum for some of these executives. David mckenzie, thank you so much for that report. Seven minutes after the hour right now. The United States has doubled the number of aircraft standing by in italy this morning, just in case americans need to be rescued from the u. S. Embassy in tripoli in libya. An Evacuation Order could come at any moment. This as fierce fighting erupts throughout tripoli. We get more now from pentagon correspondent barbara starr. Reporter john, christine, with violence rising every day in libya, the question now, is that country falling into civil war . And if it is, can the u. S. Embassy remain open, can diplomats stay on the job . If the violence gets any worse, the state department is prepared to evacuate the 200 or so americans that are there. A package of heavily armed marines waiting just to the north in italy across the mediterranean. About 250 marines equipped with eight v22 aircraft that can fly very quickly to italy, they are on a twohour string. What does that mean . That means if the Evacuation Order comes, they will be in the air and on their way to libya within two hours or less. The bad side of this, once again, we do have the threat for Severe Weather. So, think about what you saw yesterday, those supercells, right . Look at all the moisture, especially when you talk about the upper midwest. Thats the exact area we are going to be having that concern today. We do have, notice the warm temperatures on top of all that moisture, well above normal, going look at chicago looking for 84 degrees today. So, now you know why 20 million 29 million of you, actually, are looking for Severe Weather right in that zone, milwaukee, chicago, indianapolis, toledo, even columbus, also portions of colorado today are going to be having that threat for that Severe Weather. The rest of us looking at a system making its way through the course, the same one, ohio valley into the northeast, looking for rain already in the northeast starting by tomorrow night. Not a lot of rain, maybe 1 to 3 inches over the next several days. We can handle it, but its still Severe Weather. Its that time of the year. I dont want to see any more of this baseballsized hail. I love the forecast for chicago, 84 in chicago. I think theyre all right without the Severe Weather. If only you were in chicago. I know. Youre not. Want to be on the beach getting sunburned, first warm day of may. They were beating up on the Oklahoma City thunder in game one of the western conference finals, taking advantage of really a shorthanded thunder team. Joe carter has more in the Bleacher Report this morning. Hey, joe. Hey, good morning, guys. Yeah, Oklahoma City does not have their big man, serge ibaka, out right now with a calf injury. And you could tell last night from the opening tip that the size of the San Antonio Spurs was going to be a matchup problem for Oklahoma City. The spurs absolutely took advantage of no big man in the paint. They scored a staggering 66 points down low. Tim duncan, who goes 611, had no one to contest his long arms. He led the way with 27 points. Now, san antonio, who lost all four regular season games to Oklahoma City, had no problem beating them last night by 17 points. And im john berman. About 31 minutes past the hour right now. And this morning, you can smell it in the air. It is primary day pollen . Voters headed to the polls for big primaries, big races across the nation that really could shape what direction this country is headed in for the next few years. Polls opening just hours from now in six states, and voters will decide who gets to represent their party for governors offices and congressional districts, decisions that could change who controls the senate. Political editor Paul Steinhauser is here with the races to watch. Good morning nice and early for you, paul. Good morning. I thought i was excited. You both sound more excited about this than even me. But youre right, this is game day, i guess you could say. And wheres the marquee battle today in that antiestablishment tea party fight against the republican establishment . Lets go to kentucky. Thats where the fiveterm senator from kentucky, Mitch Mcconnell, the Top Republican in the senate, is facing off against a tea partybacked guy, matt bevin, a businessman who enjoys support from big antiestablishment groups. This has been one ugly race, lots of money being spent here. But if you look at the latest polls, Mitch Mcconnells up 20 to 30 points. You pick the polls. Hes also got the backing of kentuckys other republican senator, a guy called rand paul, who is, you know what, pretty influential on the right. Probably going to be an easy night for mcconnell, but come november, hes going to have a much tougher time against a woman called alison lundgren grimes, kentuckys secretary of state, challenging mcconnell, and shes got the backing of some top democrats, including somebody named bill clinton. Guys . Big dog likes to play in kentucky in that race. Paul, the race ive been watching is in georgia, where its really a free for all for the republican nomination there and a sign, perhaps, of the power of the republican establishment. It sure is, john. Good point. Its a food fight there. The republican senator, saxby chambliss, is retiring. Youve got five major republican candidates all battling for the nomination. And guess what . The more moderate candidates there right now have the upper hand in the polls over the most conservative candidates, an interesting race. You know, were seeing this establishment antiestablishment battle play out in so many races. So far, the establishment has the upper hand. You remember, in 2010 and 2012, the Tea Party Candidates won some highprofile races in the primaries, but come november, they lost to the democrats. Republicans arguably lost five senate seats because of that. This time around, the establishment is fighting back, and that could make the difference come november when the democrats try to hold on to their slim majority in the senate. Oh, november. Youre salivating for november, be honest. Be honest. I cant wait. You political guys. Its very exciting. And todays very exciting. Six states to watch. Well be on it all day here at cnn, stay with us. Paul steinhauser, great to have you with us. Thanks, paul. Other news to talk about, tension building between the u. S. And china. Officials in beijing furious over the indictment of five Chinese Military officers accused of hacking into u. S. Companies to steal corporate secrets. So, theyre now summoning u. S. Ambassador max baucus and threatening to retaliate. Want to bring in David Mckenzie live in beijing this morning. This is now a pretty serious war of words. You have a trade battle and now this diplomatic dispute to go on top of it, david. Reporter well, add to all of that, john, the fact that the u. S. Has indicted, criminally indicted five chinese officials of the Peoples Liberation army. I think thats the most shocking thing to the Chinese Government, at least. Theyre calling these allegations extremely absurd. Theyre saying that these facts are not true at all, and they are hitting back, saying that theyre going to do unspecified actions against the u. S. To punish it if it goes through with these indictments. You know, these acts they went through, stealing information from companies, including Vital National security information, if the indictment is to be believed, would be very serious. They could get up to 15 years in jail. And the u. S. Justice Department Says that this could have taken up billions of dollars of profits from u. S. Companies, and ultimately, u. S. Workers. So, this is a big deal that has a lot of impact on real people, but the Chinese Government hitting back, saying its got nothing to do with this and that everyone hacks and that the u. S. Is being hypocritical. Difference, the u. S. Says it spies in military and intelligence purposes for those purposes. Theyre saying china spies for corporate profit here, which is something the u. S. Claims not to do. But as you say now, this criminal indictment in place. David mckenzie in china for us this morning. Thanks so much. Chaos in libyas capital city. The United States doubling the number of aircraft standing by in italy, just in case hundreds of americans need to be evacuated from the u. S. Embassy in tripoli. Reporter john, christine, with violence rising every day in libya, the question now, is that country falling into civil war . And if it is, can the u. S. Indra petersons with that and much more in todays forecast. Hi, indra. Hi. At least the good news we have is the fire danger is going down, at least on the west coast completely gone today. Where are we looking at red flag warnings . Thats going to be farther to the east where theyre not seeing the onshore flow, but even in these areas, they are going to be seeing relief in just a couple of days. Why . Weve completely switched the weather pattern. Instead of having High Pressure over here, its over here on the east. So, on the west coast, what are we looking at . Low pressure eventually going to be sliding into the southern plains, especially out towards texas, where theyve had horrible Drought Conditions. Theyre going to be getting wellneeded rain by the middle of the week. That is huge. The down side of this is were looking at all the moisture in the upper midwest still again today, and not just all the moisture. Combine all that, the hot, the humidity, and you have very warm temperatures and you know whats coming, and that is the threat for Severe Weather. So, heads up, especially flying through chicago. Ohare today, the threat for Severe Weather out there. The raw satellite data used to determine the final path of flight 370 could soon be made available to the public. The malaysian government and officials from the british Satellite Firm inmarsat theres been this dispute over who has and does not have the data. The malaysian government says they dont have it. Inmarsat said they turned it over to the malaysians. But now theyve issued a joint statement saying theyre working together to release it in the name of transparency. Lets bring in saima mohsin, monitoring developments live from kuala lumpur this morning. Good morning, saima. Reporter morning, john. Yeah, this is something extraordinary, isnt it . Weve heard so much about this raw data. A simple explanation would be, we have it, were going to give it to you, be completely transparent, but weve had so many different statements from the malaysian government, from inmarsat, the satellite data company that said it had developed this data, all kind of throwing the ball in one anothers court. And the families were pulling their hair out. Weve been speaking to them, saying, please, share it with us, because this is what everything rests upon. This is the data that led everyone to take their search to the southern indian ocean. Well, finally, late last night and i can tell you, we have been phonebashing here in kuala lumpur. Finally, the malaysian government, the acting transportation minister thats the man that weve been seeing holding all these press conferences, hishammuddin bin hussein said, yes, we are going to release this data. Now, this morning, early kuala lumpur time, a joint statement, as you say, was released. And what theyre saying is that the satellite data company and malaysian authorities are going to present the data in what they said is a presentable way, which means theyre going to release the raw data, and alongside it an explanation from inmarsat of how to read the data. But the family members are actually saying, look, we dont want you to tell us how to read this data. We want somebody else, an independent body, a body that doesnt have a vested interest in any of this. Clearly, theres a lot of suspicion. Some of them have told me, look, its been more than a month searching in the southern indian ocean and weve seen no evidence that the plane went down there. So, how do we know that this data is even correct . And of course, as i said, everything is resting on this data. So, they want to get the data and they want another independent body to verify this. So, this is going to go on and on for some time. But a small victory at least for the family members, as we have also been pushing here in kuala lumpur to get that data released. They say theyre going to do it. We just dont know when yet. John . No, i think Everyone Wants to get a good look at this to see exactly what they do release, because theres been so much distrust over the last weeks and even months. Saima mohsin in kuala lumpur.
