Usually the biggest shopping day of the year, but this year, maybe not. A new cnn poll shows fewer than 1 in 4 americans plan to go shopping today. You may not guess that with the long lines outside Stores Across the country. Our National CorrespondentDeborah Feyerick is bracing for retail impact at a new jersey mall. Reporter great to see you, john. In fact, a lot of intrepid shoppers outside stores. We are here at the Newport Center. A couple dozen people we see right now. Some people did what they needed to do and got out. One of the people has and you can see the crowds who did line up. I can hear the sound of the video playing right now. I want to go to matesh. You came here last night. How crowded was it . The parking lot was 3,900 cars. How crowded was it . Everything was packed. Everything was crowded. As soon as it got to 9 00, people started leaving because of the weather. Reporter you decided to stay overnight. You are a College Student here in jersey city. You did some shopping. Are those things you need, you want or had to have . These bags . A couple of things i really needed them like winter boots. I really needed that for winter. A couple of things that i wanted. Reporter did you buy gifts for anybody . I dont buy gifts for anyone. I just give gift cards. Reporter were the discounts what you wanted . For the most part. Reporter 10 or 20 . I guess the best was 50 at hollister. Reporter did you stay within budget . Oh, yeah. My budget was around 200. I spent about 150. Reporter you are doing well. I got everything. You skate in the day. Easy life. A couple of stores, john, 130 of them, 15 actually decided to stay open a bit longer than they normally would. We have a store over here, a hat store, and people stayed open all night. They did a days worth of sales. They say it was worth it. We will be here all day and talking to shoppers. Instead of the huge protests and violence that we saw the other night parked by the grand jury decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown, early thursday morning, and all day, there were small demonstrations and a few dozen protesters and a couple of arrests. No injuries, no damage. On thanksgiving night, police and National Guard troops chased down calls on social media for protests at big box stores. Now the real work of rebuilding and recovery begins in ferguson. With more on that, lets go to cnns sara sidner. Reporter john, i want to give you a look at some of the devastation in the daytime. Were on west florissant. This is not ferguson, this is dellwood. A Community Near ferguson. You will see the conoco gas station. According to the residents here, they started stocking up and now this. It is destroyed. Everything inside burned. You can see the caution tape around it. This is just some of the destruction that existing both here and in ferguson. We should be clear that really the most of the damage is on two streets. West florissant and south florissant. South florissant is where you saw the tear gas and windows busted out. There were no fires there. On west florissant, thats where the most damage is and that is going to be difficult for some folks to rebuild. We know one business said they cannot do it again. They were taken out in august and again hit this time and they just do not have the money or the confidence to rebuild. However, we do know that there are places and businesses that are rebuilding. One of those is cathys kitchen. They opened their doors less than 24 hours after they were vandalized. They are absolutely packed with people. Lastly, the protesters who have been peaceful are very upset because they feel their message has basically been ignored because of those who decided to do criminal activity. John. Thanks to sara sidner. A pregnant st. Louis woman is now blind in one eye after a run in with police in ferguson tuesday more than. Dornella conners was out with her boyfriend and police fired a bean bag shotgun round in the passenger window shattering the glass. Conners had no weapon and did nothing to bring on the Police Weapons fire. Her sister says the protesters on the scene share some of the blame. I dont want this to be swept under the rug because of the behavior of other people. I understand that you are trying to be heard. We all are trying to be heard. Now that my sister can only see one side of things, literally, and i really just want to have closure and justice for my sister and for mike. St. Louis county Police Spokesperson says officers fired because conners boyfriend drove straight at them. He has been arrested and charged with assault. Volunteers came to help in ferguson on thanksgiving morning. They were there to take a first small step on the road to the citys recovery. Painting the boarded up windows of businesses affected in the unrest. As one put it, anything is better than just blank plywood. This is not the answer to the bigger issues we face, but small thing within our means to do to help the community. Many volunteers live in the area and want it to look like the friendly place they feel it is. Protests inspired by events in ferguson continued on thursday at the macys thanksgiving day parade on thursday when several people were arrested when they tried to hop over the barricades. Organizers say they wanted to protest the death of Michael Brown and three other people that have been killed by police. Drones becoming enough of a hazard in the sky and the faa is looking at new rules. The federal Aviation Administration says the drone use skyrocketed this year. 41 pilots report seeing one in october. In some cases, pilots had to alter course to avoid drones. Three planes were recently reported very close calls near new Yorks Laguardia airport. The faa expects to issue the rules by years end. Some encouraging news this morning about ebola. The National Institutes of health says the experimental vaccine against the virus is showing promising results. 21 adults are taking part in the trials. The nih is hoping to expand the trials to see if the drug can prevent ebola infection. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is back home after heart surgery. She is expected to get back to court on monday. The 81yearold Bader Ginsburg was rushed to a d. C. Hospital this week. She had a stent implanted. So with thanksgiving past, the Christmas Tree is due to arrive this morning at 11 00 a. M.
