The american people. Then he asks. I guarantee you theres no problem. How does the world feel . I have a great global panel to discuss. Then i found the single most important is not economic anxiety. It is not even race. Well talk to him and explain. And so far the president ial campaign has seen 20, count of 20 debates and there are still almost eight months until the election. We will debate the art of debating from its ancient origins to lincoln and douglas all the way to the debate. Finally. The most important thing is the story. Other shows are reexamining the murder of the century, the o. J. Simpson case. Well reexamine the most famous murder in history. Who really killed ceaser and why. Fitting questions on the eve of the eyes of march. But first, heres my take. The energy fuelling the president ial campaign on both sides of the political spectrum seems to be deep despair about the American Economy. On this central issue, Bernie Sanders and donald trump have a surprisingly similar message. The American Economy has failed. But is the analysis correct . Lets see. The u. S. Economy has created 14 million private sector jobs since 2010. Unemployment has dropped to under 5 and the number of people filing jobless claims hit a 42year low. The dow jones has more than doubled under barack obama. Housing and construction markets are also strong. Auto sales are booming and even wages have begun to rise. The central dynamic is that the gains from growth, low inflation and technical productively are spread broadly through the entire population. We all gain from lower cost goods and extraordinary technology. But the cost, the jobs lost and the wages cut are concentrated among a Smaller Group of people. It is the voices of these people understandably angry that we hear on the campaign trail these days. The present recovery has been much less row bust than previous ones. Many predicted this from the start. Pointing out the slow downs battle the confidence of the consumers and businesses. The most relevance is how the u. S. E mermerged from the reces compared to the worlds other major economies. The u. S. Economy grous much likely faster than the euro zones and three times faster than japans. In the United StatesFederal Reserve started to raise Interest Rates because it worries about Economic Growth produced in inflation. What the other bank is thinking of cutting rates to desperately try to jump start the economist. On the Republican Campaign trail one of the ritual denunciations i hear is that they have strangled the economy with regulations. The center piece is a vast complex of unruly set of laws and rules that now kovrn the financial industry. Yet, as the Financial Times reported this week, americas top five investment banks made more than twice as much money as the european counter parts beating the european rivals on almost every financial measure last year. The argument that the economy would grow faster if there were major tax and regulatory reforms is a plausible one in theory. The United States is actually a very competitive economy. The report for the World Economic forum identified the countries best able to take a advantage of the fourth american revolution, an america ranked fifth. In an essay of foreign affairs, they carefully explain why the fundamental problem in the Economy Today is a lack of demand. Too much savings. Too little spending and he advocates as the single central a major boost in infrastructure spending. Hes pointed out to me before, in a house a deferred maintenance insures you have a much larger bill when things break down. Better to borrow money at low rates and spend it now to boost growth and kick off a virtual cycle of demand. Future generations will be better off owing lots of money and long term bonds at low rates in a currency they can print than they would be inheriting a vast, deferred maintenance of viability he writes. From what they have repeatedly said about infrastructure on the campaign trail it appears Bernie Sanders and donald trump would agree with this. For more, go read my column from this week. Lets get started. Excitement, horror, other confusion. These are a few emotions americans are feeling about the 2016 president ial race but i wanted to find out what the rest of the world thinks of the likes of trump, cruz, rubio, kasich and sanders. Do they feel the same emotions or real ones . Here with me is a writer for the global institute. Adam was in the late 1990s, the magazines correspondent and were calling him an honorary frenchman today. Born and pred in germany. We are joined from london today, the chief columnist for the Financial Times. What is going on in jurp in general. When they look at trump surely theyre theying about thats happening in london and poll land. One of the things thats happening is youve seen a mown taen of right Thing National parties in frances daughter now runs a shop passed down, runs the extreme rights party and actively endorsed donald trump. I think it suggested they see and its not limited to the extreme right, trump as primarily a nationalist. I think its terribly important we see trump in that context not necessarily as a crypto fascist. Its a very different thing from a populist or conservative. I guess it was the death of nancy reagan over the weekend much of the same horror had been expressed about ronald reagan. I think in some respects it might be. If you look at his positions hes actually more moderate than a ted cruz who wants to rip up the iran deal on day one. In the end, i gave up donald trump twothirds a way through the column. I think theres warring aspects which has as much to do with his temperament and the style he brings to politics as his policies. I think i would be worried to have somebody like that in charge. The person who he does seem to resemble an awful lot had almost a vulgar style but italians love it. Tell us what we can learn. I think the parallels between the two are really striking and i think they go well beyond politics and the question of style is really important here. Its the very brash abracive record trump is using in the campaign reminds italians very much of what they had and displayed for the 20 or so years he dominated politics when he was head of government or oppositi opposition. Calling names was a very common thing he would do regularly. He made a habit of suing them any chance he got. You said his legacy has been bad. Absolutely. It shocked the trust italians have by basically debasing public scores around politics and democracy and institutions. If you say over and over again that everybodys corrupt and nobodys to be trusted. Weve written about this. The loss of faith and democracy. How much of it is you have a spirited attack on not just your political opponents for having different policies but almost for being criminals. Trump is not hypocritical about it. When hes asked why he invited him to his wedding hillary says i thought it was fun to go. Trump says well, im a realestate man. People like the fact hes honest about this t. I think is it also then going to deteriorate. What really worries me about trump is that he has his only course is himself. Thats take rous. Were going to take a break. This is how much of the right wing revolt against david cameron, the attempt to get britain out of the europe, how much of that is the rise of a kind of english nationalism that feels has been bent in by the scotts, the welsh and now europe . Well, its mainly aimed at europe. Its got deep roots. It goes back to factorism. The sense that parliament has lost sovereignty to brus sells. Thats been there a long time. I think originally, the reaction was rather similar to the american establishments reaction that was a kind of only in america phenomenon and soon fade. They didnt really believe it would have legs. Then its been replaced. Still at a dree of amusement. Now i think a degree of anxiety as well. Although, people are still, i dont know whether its denial or being realistic. I think people find it hard to imagine it would go all the way to the white house. The full back London Dinner Party position. Even if he gets the nomination surely he loses to hillary clinton. If you watched it on tv you were certain kennedy won. Why . Well, nixon looked sweaty and sickly and kennedy was young and handsome. Welcome to the world of television. Fast forward to todays debates where the insults fly and references are made to the size of genitalia. And he referred to my hands if theyre small Something Else is small. I guarantee you theres no problem. I gaurn fee. We should step back and talk about the purpts of debate. With me, eric the professor of history after the columbus university. Lets start with you. It gets to the issue of why do we have debates . It use to be that people had speeches. But you and i talked about how in the heart of it all really is the ideal of so pran rancic dialogue. Why did they start writing dialogues . Plato started writing dialogues because he thought a lot of public speaking was superficial and weak. He felt the best way to get to the truth was the need to have a serious argument. In the serious argument i can take your ideas and put them under a test and you can do the same for me. That way, were going to we hope get towards something thats true as opposed to my winning the debate or youre winning the debate. How was that regarded at the time . Well, the ancient athenians loved rhetoric. They made the Big Decisions themselves sitting in large assemblies. So the debate was crucial because in effect you were exposing people to the issues they had known of. Yes. You had to be a very good speaker. You had to be able to speak to 10,000 or 12,000 people live and that, of course, takes talent and a lot of practice and frankly education. Somebody like the famous athenian leader was regarded as a su purr b seeker. Well, of course, the Constitutional Convention was full of debates. This was all in private. They were not public debates at all. Proceedings werent published until much, much later. But pretty early candidates, not for president but candidates for other offices had public debates between candidates or congress in different districts, the Lincoln Douglas debates are rather unusual because they were both candidates of the senate. Youll have these seven debates where theyre out there speaking to 1020,000 people coming to hear these lengthy, they lasted three hours or more and quiet profound in many ways, debates between the two candidates. Did they matter . They made a tremendous difference. They made a difference in the long term in making lincoln a national figure. We didnt have the tv or the internet but newspapers from all over the country covered these des bai debates. They put this in the face of slavery in society. Who is really an american . Is it a country for white people, do free blacks have any rights . You watch these and look at it as a historian, what is your reaction . Im usually apauled by the republican debates yf sunk to a low level as you mentioned before but we should not think that american politics has just been a polite debating society until now. Theres always been demagogue ri. You can go back to what they were saying about George Washington and the thomas jefferson, i do think that you know, the lack of substance so to speak and just the elevation of personal insult and personal grand and egotism, it is kind of a new low in our political debate. I hope this is not a trend which will continue. Its just a reflection at the particular moment we happen to be in. Pleasure to have you on. Lincoln and douglas went on to fight a president ial campaign against each other and that is the subject of tonights episode of race for the white house. Take a look at this clip. Douglas focuses his attack on lincoln. If you desire negro citizenship then support mr. Lincoln and the black Republican Party. His weapon, race hate. He accuses lincoln and calls him a black republican, things far worse. Lincoln did a lot of things that today seem mythical. But he never appealed to the darker angels of our nature and douglas did. Douglas should have been shameless. Watch more of the Political Drama in the upcoming episode of the race for the white house. Up next, we are on the eve of the ives of march. Indeed almost all of what we think we know about the assassination of ceaser, from the 1,500s when the play premiered. One professor has gone back as close to primary sources that still exist. What he finds will surprise youmented we thought it was fitting to talk about this on the eve of march and the person i want to ask is the subtitle. The story of historys most famous assassination. Why is it such an important assassination . Im glad you asked that. The death of ceaser was a turning point. This was an opportunity for the public to make the reforms necessary. At that time the america of the world and ceaser becomes this guy, great military conquerer that seems to be more fing into an empire. He has the Strongest Army rome ever had. How large are they at this poi point . It is enormous and theres about 50 Million People in it. What was ceaser like . As a person he was absolutely fascinating and maddening. He was brilliant and a genius and smarter than anyone else. The trouble is he knew it. Hes a rare person in history. You dont see him very often. The shakespeare version is ceaser is betrayed and assassinated by a group of people led by his closest friend, a man he considers his son. There is that is famous line in shakespeare. Is any of this true . Its true that ceaser was betrayed by his friends. The majority of con conspiraspi was his friend. Its not true he was ceasers greatest friend. He thought against them origi l originally in the war and he makes peace and brings him to his side. He had a strange relationship with him. His mother was ceasers exmisstress. Why doesnt he succeed . In part because its extre extremely well planned. The picture we get is its a group of guys at the last minute putting it together and they get a lucky break. The leaders are some of romes top generals. They knew exactly what we were doing. They cased the place and really had a plan down to the minute. They even brought glad appreciators as back up. Something thats not there in shakespeare. It also succeeds because ceaser doesnt believe it. Hes a victim of his own success. He sucks all the air out of the room every place he goes. There is one person in shakespeare that gets that right and thats his wife who was a very experienced roman politician. She comes from a top politician family. Theres another woman in your story who doesnt really appear marginally and thats cleopatra. Yes. She was his mistress and present in rome on the odds of march. She was living in ceasers villa. She probably had their natural dhield with them, their son which means little ceaser and she was a very controversial figure. Many romans despised her and thought he was the proof ceaser really wanted to be queen. Afterall, his girl friend was the queen of egypt. Whats the big lesson when you think of the assassination . I think the biggest lesson of the assassination is that politics always trumps military. You always need to have a political plan. It is not enough to fight people. Both ceaser and the assassins were lacking any such plan. Thats why he failed and the assassins planned. Thats why the person that inherits it all is an 18yearold kid that turns out wiser than either ceaser weor t great man who killed. Hes the man who manages to put the pieces all back together again. Its not an easy process. Its absolutely fascinating. Thank you so much. Thank you. Next on gps. What is the single best explanation for the rise of trump . As donald trump continues his rise, his opponents wonder is this an american brand of authority tarnism. Obviously, his supporters would agree. Lets listen to what a fascinating book has found a political scientist cowrote a book in 2009. They say trump might be the first in a series of 21st century strong man candidates. Welcome, john. Thanks for having me. What is the thesis of the book . The thesis of the book is that the polarization we see in american politics over the last 30 years or so that everybody recognizes is particularly intense and acura moanous form of polarization and actually being driven at the grass roots level by differences and personality among the voters supporting those two parties. And the personality is is theres certain kinds of voters mostly on the republican side who like authority tarn side of politics. What theyre attracted to is they believe very strongly in a need for social order as traditionally refined. And they have personality traits that predispose them. Thats right. Those personality traits are going to attract them to leaders who speak in clear terms. When did people start trying to figure out whether ordinary people had tendencies toward authoritarian style . Research is several decades old. Theres others who explain fascism. More resent decadesdemocracies, been an interest in why a personality tug would be associated with people who feel a strong need for order who want to ensure people unlike them are put in their place and want clear, Simple Solutions to complicated problems. You actually asked questions not related to politics. We asked four parenting questions. We asked them what kind of attributes they want children to have. To a fascinating degree, how people answer those parenting questions tells us an awful lot about how they see the world politically. So what you find is people who want presumably their children to be, to have respect for elders, obedience and goodmaners and well maifed have a tendency. To be more authoritarian. And to choose for authoritarian style figures in politics. Yes. When you take this data and looked at the trump phenomenon, what did you find . We found, matt at am hurst did a National Survey which included four parenting questions and found to a striking degree how people answer these four parenting questions was by far the best predicator of their support by donald trump. Better than the demographic things like gender, income, education that people usually think explains political preferences. In fact, there were these four parenting questions that told us whether folks like trump or not. Thats fascinating. Youre saying more than people point out it tends to be working class whites, poorly educated whites. The answers to the questions were an evil stronger frequent dick or the. Much stronger. So much of the narrative has been about the white working class. The degree to which working class status explaining trump, it goes away. And you think this is the beginning. I think whats happened is the Republican Party in particular has cult traited a base thats seized the world. Of course, not all republicans feel this way. Many of them share this world view. In our regard theyre beholding to the base and need to reflect the world view and the concerns and the fears of that base. From that perspective, i think its possible trump will not be a one of a kind politician. Than, pleasure to have you on. Thank you very much. This supports the theory mexican cartels are facing tough competiti competition. The state has issued roughly a thousand license to dispense marijuana. The sells of medical and recreational pot reached nearly 20 billion and the state collected more than 135 million in taxes and fees according to the denver post. Thats money that goes to its schools and Services Including drug education. If the cartels lose and the states make money, is it about time to legalize and light up all over the country. Canada seems to be moving in that direction. Well, there are some areas of concern. In general, the benefits seem to outweigh the cost. But the best way forward would be to study the data coming out of colorado and other states and countries where marijuana is legal and to craft the best policies Going Forward that take the crime out of drugs and also address the fallout for more widespread availability.
