She said if you want to stump a democrat, she said ask them about Hillary Clintons accomplishments as secretary of state. If you were on that debate stage with her, what would you say was your number one accomplishment as secretary of state . You know, wolf, i didnt get to see all of their debate but i saw enough of it to know that this is just the usual back and forth political attacks, the kinds of things you say when youre on a debate stage and you really dont have much else to say. I didnt hear anything from any of them about how theyre going to make college more affordable or get down student debt or get equal pay for equal work for women. What theyre going to do to make sure we deal with challenges of raising incomes for hardworking people. So i dont really pay a lot of attention to this kind of rhetoric that heats the debate stage. Theyre all trying to vie for more attention from obviously the Republican Party. Im going to let them decide how best to do it. Ive said for a long time, polls will go up, theyre going to go down. Im very confident and very comfortable about our strategy. I feel that our campaign in iowa, New Hampshire, all the early states an now were moving on to the states that come after, are really coming together well. Im excited by the level and intensity of the support i have. So i always thought this would be a competitive election. Im looking forward to it. This is an important job. This is the most important job not only in you are our country but in the world. People have to fight hard. They have to make their case and earn the votes of the american voters. You know, for whats going through Donald Trumps mind when hes up there is, how do i get out of this situation . For him its the entertainers response of yes and the improv response. Youre then accepting the premise of the question. Yes. Is this a turning point, errol . This is to my ears the easiest thing for a politician to hit out of the park. That was a repugnant, racist question, lets move on. Its almost a difficult gift. It lets the politician take the high ground. Who questioned the president s citizenship and asked for a birth certificate. This is the transition from being an entertainer and a provocateur and being a celebrity figure and a politician. Even donald trump, his interview with you, hes gone further faster than even he expected. 90 days in hes leading in all the polls, all kinds of new things are happening. He has to work rope lines althoughs a germaphobe. He has to handle the questions even though he stirred up the sentiments that are coming back to haunt his cam pane. He has to figure out what hes going to do and how hes going to do it. I think well have a lot more of these awkward moments as he tries to figure out how to become a politician. Awkward moment is a nice way to say it. What people saw in that debate, again, 23 million of them, saw this, wasnt that donald trump was being hunted by the other candidates. But there was an elevation of the game in that debate. People were coming with heavy artillery of information, of rationales, of policy, of contrasting things, of history. Do you think that was part of the reason he was so quiet in the debate . He was shell shocked by the level of the game . Certainly for the first time in this really entire campaign, somebody drew blood on donald trump and it happened a series of times on wednesday night, whether it be Carly Fiorinas response to his attacks, jeb bush about his attacks on his wife. Jeb bush on the casino stuff, Chris Christie on his record saying people dont want to hear about this anymore. Donald trump was on the defensive really for the first time in this race. And it showed. He sort of disappeared for the 37minute stretch on Foreign Policy which might have helped him a little bit. Thats not where hes strong on. Looking at him last night, that town hall was not his normal format. He seemed to be on the defensive and shaken up by it. We have a its not a poll, its an interesting game where people give instant response during the debate an how they were feeling about the candidates. Its by political its called pivot, a political predict market and cnn. This is how people were feeling. This is at the start of the debate versus at the end. These are at the end. These are at the end. He was down 8 by the end of the debate. Ben carson was down 4 . Bush, had risen by the end of the debate. Fiorina had gone up also. An instant figure on the pulse feeling. I thought the most telling exchange in the entire evening was the medical marijuana debate where you have rand paul, the libertarian going at it with jeb bush, the conservative governor, the law and order guy, Chris Christie jumps in, Carly Fiorina jumps in with a personal experience. It was an actual debate, many different corners of conservatism coming together and mixing it up. Donald trump off to the side, nothing to say. And that i think is where this debate is starting to take us. Whats the other number, zeke, maybe that not that he gets away with it but hes not doing something thats as offensive as you might think by allowing this man this oxygen and question. Is this other number about where in the Republican Party people think the obamas religion lies . Republicans only. Christian, 29 , muslim, take a guess. 43 of those polled republican think that president obama is a muslim. What do you read into in that number as a rationale for how to approach the situation by donald trump . You look at what donald trump did. Hes probably catering. Theres probably a large overlap between that 40 and Donald Trumps 22 to 33 in the polls right now. Its probably the same people, the small minority of the broader electorate, 22 , 33 of 30 of america. Its hard to put your finger on it after 6 1 2 years of the president in the white house, two years of campaigning before that. They still believe this, theres probably nothing donald trump or anyone else can do to change their mine. This is donald trump trying to keep his support. If they believe it, hes going to say it.
