There are just a few hundred people here. Imagine the impact of just the numbers. Everybody knew somebody very intimately. Last night we saw a candlelight vigil. Just about everybody is affected by this. What do we do . What does it mean . Those are the familiar questions and theyre just as frustrating this morning as ever. Why would he drive all wait here and attack this particular church. Cnn is learning more about the man who opened fire killing people at this small Baptist Church. The suspected killer is 26yearold devyn patrick kelley, who once served in the u. S. Air force. He served a year in prison for assaulting his wife and child. He was discharged from the air force for bad conduct. Police say the suspect began his rampage around 11 30 a. M. Sunday morning, dressed in all black Tactical Gear and a ballistic vest, he began firing from outside the church during sundays service. He then entered the church and continued his assault, killing dozens. This video taken last sunday shows just how small the congregation is. The pastors own 14yearold daughter, Annabelle Pomeroy is among the dead. Employees at a nearby store recall hearing shots ring outs. This was rapid fire. We were flabbergasted. Reporter were told that kelley legally purchased the ruger used in the attack in 2016. When filling out paperwork for his background check, he indicated he didnt have any disqualifying criminal history. Police say a local gunman confronted the gunman at the church. As he exited the church, a local resident grabbed his rifle and engaged the suspect. The suspect fled the scene. He was pursued for several miles at high speeds. The gentleman came to my truck as shooter took off and he briefed me quickly on what had just happened and said we had to get him so thats what i did. Johnny langendorf said he crashed his vehicle, where police found him dead inside the car with a gunshot wound. President spoke at a conference with the japanese Prime Minister. This isnt a guns situation. This is a Mental Health problem at the highest level. Now this small, tightknit Community Comes together to remember those killed and hurt in sundays carnage. Theres so much love for one another. Theres no room for hate. Reporter and just before midnight last night, we witnessed a family walking across the street away from the church. They were distraught. We approached them and asked them what they were struggling with and dealing with. They said their daughter was missing, that they had not heard about her nearly 12 hours after that. The emotion in their face, chris, really speaks to what so many of these families are dealing with this morning. Were with a member of the community right now. We have Kathleen Curnow here with her husband. She and her husband live right across the street from the church. They heard the gunshotgunshots. Some of them made it to your property. Correct. How are you doing it. It was a rough week. Were not making it any easier for you, theres so much light and sound going on here. Youve got the chapel right across the street. You heard the gunshot. We did. There were approximately four to five shots. I looked at my husband and said, really . Fireworks . Its sunday. He turn and looked immediately behind him out the window and said theres a shooter at the church. So i called 911. Hes calling out license plate and were telling them whats going on. What did he see, your husband . He saw the shooter walking up to the church and shooting the outside. The church has kind of an l shape. He walk around and down the l, came back to the vehicle, started to reload or thats what it appeared, gathering things out of his vehicle and went back up to the church. I want back, i was trying to pull my husband away and he was like i have to do this, have i to do this and so i saw that and i had to turn away. I couldnt watch it. And thats when he saw the gunman go back into the church and at that point, shots and everything just picked up and it was horrifying. Where did your husband go . What did he do . He stayed there at the window. I gave him binoculars and said these will help you. I called my friend and i heard the shots closer and louder, not as close to thgether. I went running back to the house thinking he got shot. It was at that point i realized that one of my neighbors was there and there was an embassy change, both of our vehicles got hit, the house got hit and my neighbor in my opinion, hes stopped this. This would have been a lot worse. I dont know how you could look at it any other way. I mean, by all accounts of people who have seen what happened and by his own to Law Enforcement, from what were told, the murderer came back outside for some reason and thats when they engaged and the reporting is that the gunman wound up dropping his weapon, got in a vehicle to flee and then other people saw him fleeing and chased him down until he eventually went off the road and they dont know if he died from being hit by them on taking himself out. But if not for your neighbor, who know what is would have happened. I know one of my names took out his window and i and we didnt want anyone to see that. Were trying to pull people away and get them away from the church until Law Enforcement could get to the scene. Did you ever imagine what happened in that church and how many people could you know . I knew it was bad. My sister lives here. She woshs for the school district. Ive raised my kids in that house. I know a lot of people and a lot of people by association. Many of them were friends of my niece, who also went to church there many years ago and its this is two and three generations of two or three families are not with us anymore. One family lost eight. We heard about a mother who was killed there with some of her kids. There was only one of them that wasnt there. The one that wasnt there, the First Responder brought her out and she hid. They brought her to me and said immediately after we dont know, can you just hold her for a minute . She had a bump on her head, was covered in blood and i just tried to get her calm and, you know, clean her up. There was another bystander that was going to the church and caught a ricochet bullet from some of the gunfire. He had a small cut on his ankle. We were kind of staging it that if people come out on their own or were brought out, and they were okay, luckily one of the little girl ears family members was still alive. Her aunt was on her way to the church as well. So we were able to stop and accidentally get the family together. But i will never forget those shots, that noise is not ive been raised around guns all my life. I will never forget how that sounded. About 400, 500 people live here . Whats your guess . 600 is on a good day. They had a Dollar General open down the street. How did we get that . But it matters in terms of, looks are no matter where this happens, its terrible in terms of its impact beyond those even directly affected but here theres not going to be anybody who didnt know somebody who is not going to make it out of the service. This route 539, its one of two roads that connects floresville. It connects the school districts. Every other car, hey, how you doing . Hey, how you doing . We know everybody. When somethings not right, we just come to the and try to figure it out. But its very we saw last night but thats going to be the strength now is that you do know each other, you do care about each other in a way that just goes beyond a name and a face. Its all family here now. It is. It is. We do girl scout fundraiser, my daughters in girl scouts at the church. The pastors kids would come over and invite me to the fall festival. Did you know his 14yearold . Not very well. I had met her several times during the course of the year. They were very respectful with their ministry. Do you have a minute for the word of god . You know, im really busy, if can you come back. Sure, no problem. If there was a problem at the church when the church was closed, the entire community has their cell phone number, right down no my fedex packages ended up in the church and vice versa. I just cant imagine what mr. Pomeroy and his family is going through right now. Thank you for telling us what makes this place special. It wont be defined by this one day but how they come through it together. The best to you and your husband. As kathleen has had to live through and what weve been through together, in the last five weeks, weve seen two mass shootings, vegas and texas. And in between them, we have a terror attack that was the de deadliest since 9 11. 500 hurt piby a violence that scenes increasingly common to our culture. Gentlemen, im relying on you in the worst of circumstances to help us understand what it means to investigators and how we move forward. James, motive. We never got word on it out of vegas. Theyre looking about it here. They do see a couple of unique characteristics about this man and how it will play into the investigation. Tee them up for us. Sure. People ask why in the wake of these senle lesenseliey sens tragedies is that so important . Did anyone meet with the killer, give him aide . The second thing that is a stark point is inconsistency. How is you can have a prohibition on somebody who has a felony conviction from being able to purchase a weapon and even people with a misdemeanor . The subject did not have a felony discharge, it was either a general or special Court Martial but he got a bad conduct discharge. That does not preclude you from buying a weapon legally in this country. Thats the inconsistently. How in the legislative process have we not been able to marry up the uniforeign there are a list of items that preclude people from being able to purchase a handgun and from what we can tell right now, nothing precluded the gunman from being able to get his hand on that ruger a. R. Rifle. They have a unique piece of evidence that theyre going to be referring to here. We know this church had a tendency to put its services on youtube. Is that helpful or just a reminder of one of the worst scenes in your life . I think it is helpful. If youre investigating this, youve got to look at things like what was in his apartment or home, did he have a laptop that showed he was looking at that Youtube Video . What was he searching . What was his Google Search record . The problem in these cases, the same problem as in las vegas, if this individual is operating based on something going on inside his head, if hes not showing any exterior characteristics that suggests hes going to commit this act, one important who doesnt make a mistake, its hard to figure out how this changes so they decide killing dozens of people is appropriate. That takes us into way bigger concerns that well take care of in this interview today. There are cultural questions that just matter that, we avoid or we just dont have good answers to. One of the things that winds up being prickley here is how we define it. People say, well, when the brown guy did it in new york city, its terror, but when the white guy does it, its not. People misunderstand, i think, the legally the contextual relationship between the word terrorism and investigations. Ive asked you before and im asking you now, what does it take to be terrorism by investigators . If hes protesting say u. S. Engagement in iraq and syria, protesting racial issues in the United States which is political, thats terrorism. If hes simply angry with something in his life, thats not terrorism, thats insanity. You guys are focused on why its done and how can you make that manifest in terms of agenda. James, let me bounce it back to you for a final point. Youre the professor on the panel. This is happening more. When you look at the list of these, yes, theyre a small, small percentage of overall gun violence but theyre happening more and the most deadly ones in modern history have happened over the last decade . Do you believe that is an existence or do you believe there is a trend that we have to examine . Chris, if you look at this statistically, we look at august 1st, 19 66, the Charles Whitman clock tower shooting where i believe 15 people died from the texas clock tower shooter. We look at that from a Law Enforcement perspective as a first of the active shooter situations. And then go back eight years ago, november 5th, eight years to the day you had the fort hood shooting. Roughly the equivalent of what the gunman was able to do with the ruger. Does it appear its happening more often . Sure it does. Is there more coverage of it . Are we aware of it . Absolutely. You get an evil, dree parade he spent a year in the is there a creed or manifesto that were going to find on facebook or inside his domicile . Hopefully well get some answers soon because we dont have any right now. Coming up soon, greg abbott, the Texas Governor will be here. What does he see his job going in order . Well get back to you shortly. President trump said hes monitoring the Texas Church Massacre while hes on his fivenation asia trip. We dont have a good system now. We dont share information like we should between local and federal agencies. This guy did a year in jail for assault of his wife and child.
