CNNW New Day With Alisyn Camerota And John Berman September 1, 2020

In the midwest, where the president will be today. His trip isnt about that. Joe biden hitting the president hard about stirring things up. Fires are burning and we have a president who fans the flames rather than fighting the flames. But, we must not burn. We have to build. This president long ago forfeited any moral leadership in this country. He cant stop the violence. Because for years hes fomented it. Politico reports that the department of health and Human Services is spending 250 million, taxpayer money on a coronavirus pr campaign to, quote, defeat despair and inspire hope about the pandemic. Joining us now is cnn political direct director. David, i want to start with this, theres rise in coronavirus cases in the midwest, what do you anticipate to hear from the president about the pandemic in kenosha today . Nothing. I dont expect him to address it to at all, john. The reason is pretty simple, right, the president in the eyes of the American People has failed on his leadership through this pandemic. And so thats why you see him looking every which way to find Something Else to direct the conversation towards, to grab on to, and try to sort of program the context for this Fall Campaign in a way that defies what is plainly in front of the American People every day, because theyre dealing with it, rather theyre dealing with their kids going back to school or not going back to school. Or, theyve lost their job. The things that are impacting them every single day, almost every american is touched by this. Thats what the president doesnt want to address because he has not been seen by the American People as being able to do so successfully. The local officials, kenosha mayor, have implored the president not to come, the situation is just too sort of chaotic right now and it could have the opposite effect. The president said, quote, hes going to increase enthusiasm. Thats why hes going to kenosha, for what . For rioting . Its unclear, enthusiasm for his campaign . Because he does think this is a strategy for him, particularly about a state like wisconsin, he won that state by about 22,000 voters. Kenosha is an area he won in 2016, obama won that area in 2012, an overwhelmingly white area, so these are i think the kind of people he needs to connect with if he is to win in november. So well see. There wont be much mention about covid at all. He does think this idea of pointing to this violence, which again is on his watch, and as we know at least one of the accused people is somebody who backed his campaign and backs donald trump. So this is a president who wants to go hes sort of a photoop president , well see what kind of photos come out of this. He understands the world in images what wants to create this image likely of him with Police Officers there in kenosha and im sure there will be supporters who want him there. Typically, president s dont like to do these kind of things because it redirects resources. Cops and authorities want to Pay Attention to that situation thats on the ground and so having a president there sort of redirects this. Listen, this president who doesnt like to do what other president s have done. Joe biden really hammered him over the way hes stirring up this violence, embracing some of it. I want to get to joe bidens statement in just a second. David, one more thing the president said, widely agreed that the republicans had a successful messaging convention to say, they delivered the message they intended to, tightly to the script they wanted, the president s offscript now, dealing with issues of Racial Justice and policing. He did an interview last night on fox news tv where he equated the death of black men at the hands of police to his golf game. Listen. They choke. Just like in a golf tournament, they miss a threefoot youre not comparing it to golf . No. Im saying people choke. People choke. So, george floyd was choked to death, literally, you know jacob blake i dont think hell ever get to play golf because hes paralyzed from the waist down. That statement is grotesqugrote. Does he run a risk and actually slipping in the very area he wants to promote . It was instantly an offkey, grotesque comment, Laura Ingraham tried to save himself. Tried to correct the president. You dont really make that comparison, because the media will pick up on that. It was clear instantly how offkilter that was to not being able to have a good short game on the golf course. Listen, john, i take your point. He may be offscript now and a carefully crafted message last week. Whats not yet clear to me is if what hes doing is working at all for him. I know he thinks it may. But i dont think we have any evidence in polling or any kind of metric, well wait to see more come out that indicates this is actually altering his position in the race, that somehow hes catapulted into being the frontrunner, no hes still behind and hes still in a very troubling position for an incumbent president. Well, i invite you to tune in my pulse of the voters. Youll see if its working with those trump voters who are white suburban women. Its working in terms of the messaging. Look at what were talking about. Look at what so many News Networks are leading with, the president is going to kenosha. Were mentioning the coronavirus deaths here on this program, but were talking about this and in in fact, its working so much that former Vice President joe biden had to address it unequivocally front and center, hes what he has now said about looters and protests are. Ill be very clear about all of this rioting is not protesting. Looting is not protesting. Setting fires is not protesting. None of this is protesting. Its lawlessness. Plain and simple. And those who do it should be prosecuted. How about that . Does that put an end to whatever the Trump Campaign tries to claim about joe biden . No, absolutely not. We know that joe biden has said this before, the speech he made yesterday hes condemned looters, condemned violence, democrats have the family of jacob blake, george floyd, black lives matter protesters and leaders, they dont want any sort of violence or looting, either, distracting from their really important cause. Joe biden thought he had to come out yesterday, you know you had donald trump essentially a week of branding joe biden as somebody who would be a puppet of radical socialists, of the radical left, who didnt care about the violence. A pretty strong speech there, not only talking about criminal justice and some of the violence were seeing in some of these cities, but also saying, listen, your Social Security isnt safe in Donald Trumps america, soldiers arent safe overseas in Donald Trumps america. So i thought he was trying to kind of broaden out and turn this idea that donald trump and his allies like to push, this idea youre not safe in Joe Bidens America, obviously its not Joe Bidens America right now. Its Donald Trumps america. I thought it was a very effective speech, a speech they thought was necessary given what we saw from donald trump and his allies last week. Great to have you both on the show. Thanks, guys. Thanks. The department of health and Human Services wants to spend hundreds of millions of dollars, your dollars, on a campaign to inspire hope about the pandemic. What does dr. As of this morning, more than 183,000 americans have died. Politico reports that the department of health and Human Services is planning to spend 250 million of taxpayer money on a Public Relations campaign to defeat despair and inspire hope on the virus. Defeating despair, thats a good goal. But defeating coronavirus would be even better. There could be a Public Service announcement about Wearing Masks and socially distancing. Money could be spent for that . Yeah, i mean, thats no question that the basic Public Health practices that weve been talking about for so many months in this country are still theres still a lot of mix messages amazingly around the country. People still not seeing the value of masks and physical distancing. Countries around the world have returned to a pretty good sense of normalcy. They dont have a vaccine or a therapeutic. This is surprising to me. Theres a crisis of confidence thats going on right now, i think, within the medical establishment. The medical establishment outside of the federal government, pretty much in lo lockstep, were very concerned about some of the decisions that were made recently, and theres real divide now with many federal health officials, not all of them, but many federal health officials. These type of campaigns could e help. But we got to earn the confidence in the first place. We wonder what did we do or not do in order to get to this awful place in this country. Sanjay, a discussion this morning, going on for some time, about the issue of herd immunity, basically, you let enough people get the virus so that enough people have immunity so that the infection stops on its own, another reason people are talking about because scott atlas, the president who listens to more about the pandemic, lot of people refer to sweden as an example where they seemed to be promoting the idea of more herd immunity, but were also hearing an outcry from respected Public Health officials saying, wait a second, we shouldnt be looking at sweden. No, we shouldnt be looking at sweden as a model of success. Its really interesting, though, if you look at things at a macro level. The United States and sweden arent that different. I mean, even though our plan was not herd immunity in this country, in so many ways we didnt really lock down and didnt do the things to prevent the virus from spreading around the country. Sweden adopted the stance of herd immunity, but so many of the citizens stayed home. Despite the governments policies in sweden many people said, look, we think its still safer to stay home. So the end product, you look at sweden and United States, in some ways very similar. And what happened . We have some of the highest death counts in the world. With respect to similar countries. The economy is still very much slowed down as a result of whats happened. And were not were way behind the curve, still, compared to many other countries. If you think 10 of the country has been exposed to the virus and those are estimates start to think about 70, 80 of the country being exposed to the virus, which is what herd immunity requires. That means 1. 5 million would die. Its a terrible idea. Most people in Public Health sort of agree with that and the idea that its still being whispered into the president s ears it shows how far backward were going. Were talking about a propaganda campaign. We still got to get the basics right. Sanjay, on a different topic, i want to ask you about chadwick boseman, the beloved movie star, star of black panther. And he died of colon cancer at such a young age, at 43, i mean, you know i think that surprised a lot of us, we sometimes hear that colon cancer is one of the curable cancers. Whats the truth about this . Its supersad. You know, i will say that, chad bosemans story is untypical, he was diagnosed when he was 39 years old. We dont know about his family history, a particular risk factor for him but thats obviously young. Having said that, as you point out, alisyn, if colin cancer is caught early, chance of survival is much higher, 90 . Only 39 of colon cancers are caught early. Thats part of the issue. The screenings, you know, in the past it was recommended that everyone gets screened at the age of 50. They moved that back to 45. Some of the agency ds. Certain populations including africanamericans where the risk is even higher. But its tough. About 10 roughly of colon cancers are now in people under the age of 50. Again, his story is unusual because he was so young, but it just shows the value of trying to catch this early, if there are any symptoms that youre having, you dont think colon cancer causing stomach pains, if its persistent you got to get it checked out. A good reminder. Dr. Sanjay gupta, thank you very much. Thank you. Back to politics, how does the allimportant voting bloc of white suburban women, how do they feel today about President Trump and racial tensions . Theres no way this is a black white thing. No way. Yes, it is. It is. Im sorry you feel that way, but youre wrong. Well bring you our latest pulse of the people, next. But, first, impact your world. Murals Wearing Masks. The women youre about to meet all voted for donald trump in 2016. Three of them, the three on the bottom row now regret that vote. All of them have very strong feelings about the racial tension in the country and President Trumps role in quelling it or stoking it. Lets talk about kenosha. Lori, i want to start with you because you live in wisconsin. I have no explanation for it. Being shot in the back to me is one of the worst things, because that means youre retreating and to shoot seven times in the back i dont understand it. I dont understand and he was shackled to his bed his hospital bed and his children were in his car, theres no explanation for it other than if he were white that would not have happened. Okay, lets look at what really happened here. They had a warrant for his arrest, the police were looking for him the police tried to aprehend him peacefully, he fought with them. Let me ask you something, had the boy be white would you feel that way sf. Absolutely. I dont believe that. I dont believe that for one second. Bless your heart. Im sorry you dont believe that. Jessica, who do you hold responsible now for the violence were seeing in kenosha . I hold that at the highest level of government. Say something. Stop something. Admonish their behavior. Ahmaud arbery was shot in the street, he was hunted down and shot like an animal is that the case for im done with that. No, not at all. Were talking about the case at hand. But this in the past few months, there have been so many cases, the violence were seeing in minneapolis or in kenosha or portland isnt about of only one case, its about the feeling that black men get different treatment than white men. Show of hands, how many of you like the idea of President Trump going to kenosha . Okay, the top row likes the idea of him going to kenosha. To go there as the president , as a unifying factor, to help unify the country. Im going ask you a question, when he goes to kenosha, is he going to go to unify the community or is he going to threaten to bring in the National Guard . And his militia. My goodness, ill answer that. Hell go for number one unity and number two, if they
