A journalist tiptoeing around the uncomfortable realty about race and gender are really shaping this election. As you said this week, Hillary Clinton and donald trump went toe to toe over this. These are sites that sometimes express down right racist and sexist views. Trump fired back before and after clintons speech, calling her a bigot, claiming she exploits minorities solely for their votes. Can i Say Something here . Lets just be honest about this. Its already august, and were already using words like bigot and racist and sometimes in the day to day, really minute by minute headlines, it seems like we lose track of the broader stories that are happening. Underneath the fiery rhetoric this week, simmers an issue that some say has fueled trumps rise all the way from this time last year. How trump expose americas white identity crisis. Thats a lot of what the altright is, white nationalism. And whether trump wins or loses in november, this is not an issue thats going away, so we as journalists have to talk about it correctly. This morning we have a panel here to talk about this issue, talk got it in a big picture perspective. Jameal Smith National correspondent of mtv news, and hillary vance, and scotty nell hughes, a cnn reporter and kmn tate for. Do you feel that all the coverage this week has just caused even more dif visiveness, caused even more of a divide in this country, between blacks and whites and hispanics. Ill never subscribe to the notion that talking about race or talking about racism is dif vie sif. We need to understand exactly what the forces are that are driving Trumps Campaign. Since he has chosen to put the head of breitbart on the top of his campaign, i think we need to exam ming what that means. What does that mean to you . To me its a rebranding of white supremacy. We have seen other people, especially women and people of color who live their lives online with a target of these folks. Do you think thati think we would say theyre a mainstream form of the altright. I would say that, yes, i would say theyre part of the white supremacist machine. Theyre trying to make schur that these views become main stream. Do you think the coverage this week of donald trump and Hillary Clinton of these issues about race and racism. Were redefining whats defining this election season. We need to look at the big picture, and lets look at the big picture as to why were having this conversation this week, and its not just simply to distract from a very horrible week that Hillary Clinton had, to distract from the fact that its more important to Hillary Clintons problem, is shes worried about in november, the same valuable demographic of the africanamerican vote is not going to be as engaged as they were in 2008 and 2012 to get out and vote. I hear you, but i want to stay on race. This week donald trump called clinton a bigot. Doesnt that make your job as a pro trump commentator harder . When you look at the definition of bigotry, its something that has a small mind. Hillary clinton was all about directing hate towards a group that my counter part might consider to be racist, these are god fearing, baby loving, military supporting, School Choice advocating americans who love this country. And just because maybe there might be some, a part of a very small fringe group that reads breitbart, saying the entire website is white extreme city, theyre calling Huffington Post saying theyre pro anarchy and antiUnited States government. We should not continue this divide. Jameal, go ahead. I mean frankly, thats not exactly what i was saying. What they present is that view of white supremacist mentality. The point is saying what kind of viewpoint did they reflect . And its undeniable that they reflect a white supremacist view if you have looked over their coverage the last several years. I have asked gun advocates to come on this program. Hopefully they will next week. Whats driving some of the anger in rural america. Do you believe racial resentment, racial anxiety is a factor in Donald Trumps campaign . I think the answer is yes, its a large gripe of people and im sure people are motivated by racist attitudes. Thats an uncomfortable thing to say, theres so much talk about economic anxiety in this country, at least this week its racial anxiety. I think theres too much talk about the racial and the if you look at what Motivates Trump supporters, its not necessarily one or the other, its waking up and opening the newspaper and seeing that another kid has died of a heroin overdose, thats a sense of anxiety that doesnt get talked about as mitch, but its just as important says the racist stuff or the economic stuff. Its anxiety about a lot of issues going on. Its about truth that we have a lot of problems going on in the United States. The reason why i think Media Outlets like breitbart are being targeted is theyre actually talking about the truth. There is nothing racist about the front page. Hillary is scared and her supporters are scared because newspapers like breitbart are writing about this on the front page. How is that racist . Iowa women bash deceptive clinton. Its all about her. The reason why theyre being demonized is theyre being effective and other Media Outlets especially online wont print these types of headlines or tell these stories. I might call it altrealty as well. We want to talk about donald trump say going into inner cities, and he hasnt done it yet. He has in chicago. If i may finish. He did it in chicago. The point is that donald trump, his quote, unquote out reach is sending a tweet about dwayne wades cousin being killed on friday afternoon. It said dwyane wades cousin was shot and killed walking her baby in chicago. Just what i have been saying, africanamericans will vote trump. Later in the day, he says my condolences to dwyane wade and his family on the loss of dwyane wades cousin. Were assuming both of these were written by donald trump, we dont know if they were. It seems often times Trumps Campaign is authoring softer gentler messages from trump. Its i told you so. Not any kind of sympathy, not presenting any kind of solutions for in urban crime thats affected dwyane wades family, the aldridge family, not any kind of positive steps towards fixing this. Its just i told you so and africanamericans are going to vote trump. And the polls are showing that africanamericans are will not vote trump. So its a way to say that africanamerican are living in these militarized hellscapes, i think thats a real problem in we see headlines saying that dwyane wade and trump spoke out about this. No, they havent spoken out about this. Dwyane wade was mourning a brief response . Real quick, actually and i agree, africanamericans are not going to overwhelmingly vote republican, but donald trump is trending much better than any other republican candidate has yet. Thats not true in terms of the polls. This mornings polls, right now, and well pull them up in the next brake. Hes actually engaging more africanamericans, there are more africanamerican surrogates who are speaking on the path. And thats why Hillary Clinton is so scared and what abouts to create this whole narrative, why if you elect a republican were going to go back to the middle ages. We should be looking at, where donald trump says theres nothing racist about a job, and thats exactly what he wants to give and thats scares Hillary Clinton. Are you laughing because the description of the polls is wrong . Im laughing because i would actually like to see some of these policy put forth. Hes stressing nearly all white audiences and hes addressing them in rhetoric thats offensive to africanamericans. I would really like to understand exactly how the media is supposed to be objective about that and how exactly were supposed to talk about this send stay engaged as black voters. What should we be talking about the next few months as were dealing with race on this Campaign Coverage . We need to recognize that there are who are just hurting in social, economic, and at the end of the day i think trump is probably going the lose this election and the biggest question is what happens four or eight years from now what kind of conversation are we having. And i think we should recognize that there are legitimate hurts in these communities because if it keeps on talking about race, as if its a reductionist issue, as if its the only explanation for trumps appeal, then its going to push a lot of good people away from the National Conversation and on to the worst parts of the internet. Hillary supporters feel like clintons been on trial during this entire campaign season. Now its being allegationed that she blurred the lines between where the state department begins and the Clinton Foundation ends. Its said here this is the lead. More than half the people outside the government who met with Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of state gave money either personally or through groups to the Clinton Foundation. This is based on a review of Clintons State Department calendar. This tweet was especially scrutinized. Why are they criticizing . Ap breaking, more than half of those who met clinton as cabinet secretary gave money to the Clinton Foundation. The Clinton Campaign and several Media Outlets say that the tweet was wrong. They conducted a long investigation. Did they just want to show they had done the work, did they just want to show they found something, even if it didnt amount to much. Kathleen carol joins us now. Do you disagree with anything i said there in the introduction . The idea of scrutinizing calendars of Public Officials is pretty normal. And people who have held public office, they ought to have their calendars scrutinized. The question for me is why has the Clinton State Department fought so hard to keep these calendars from us . You filed a freedom of information act request, trying to get the calendars. Six years ago. When we finally got the calendars, there were discrepancies between those calendars and the information that was in her emails. So we went back and said are there any other schedules that the secretary might have been operating under . And they said, oh, you want all of it . So shes been releasing it in dribs and drapes. Her first year in office was what this was based on. A review of who she met with. Did you feel the pressure to publish something even though some have said it didnt amount to much. We didnt say it amounted to the end of the world. We said this is an important and interesting thing that people should know about, clintons tenure in the highest office shes ever held, secretary of sta state, who she met with. Who she employed. These are people she would have met with in the norm al course f her duties as secretary of state. But some of the people who met with secretary clinton have gotten meetings with other secretaries of states as well . Saying they didnt respond to interview requests, does that give you the eight to go ahead and Public People and mislead people . We dont think it was misleading, we dont know why she met with them. She said so afterwards. I think the issue of conflict of interest is not the actual quit pro quo. Maybe they got the meeting with her, maybe they didnt. She said on friday, she understands that people feel there may have been a problem, and if she gets elected, shell take steps to nak sure that theres not a problem Going Forward. How does this work behind the scenes, do they call you directly complaining about the story . We would be delighted to have more engagement on this topic with the Clinton Campaign, we asked them questions, they have been unresponsive, they have been unresponsive from the state department until we sued them to get the documents. Were glad to have plenty of conversations with people about that and anything they want to say to us that we can include in the story that will help illuminate their point of view, well be glad to include. That tweet said that over half of the people that clinton met overall during her state Department Time gave money to Clinton Foundation. I would say were a lot better at breaking stories and covering news and gathering stories than we are at making tweets. This one could have used some precision. Do you regret it . I think it was sloppy. Why not delete it . Why not take it down and correct it . Maybe Going Forward we need to work more on our precision on the details. I would correct one thing that you did say, it did include a link to the story in the tweet itself and the story itself is completely rock solid. As you say, nobodys had anything to say about the story itself. Sometimes a story can leave a misleading impression with people, even if it isnt exactly false. By focusinging so level on something you give the impression that theres a fire there where theres only smoke. This story was measured and it spends a lot of time at the top of the story explaining what were writing about, what were not writing about. Why we spenttime excluding people who she met with in the course of her duties because that would have been unfair. Us and wait until you see what its revealed, all of those people now, it looks like its 50 of the people that saw her had to make contributions to the Clinton Foundation. So hes taking information from the tweet, extrapolating it and i would say hes misleading people on the campaign trail. Isnt that the problem we face as journalism . We need to work more on our tweets with care and precision, but we cant be held responsibility for the way that everybody thinks about the coverage. Our job is to give them fair and Balanced Rock solid reporting, read it, agree with it, disagree with it. Dwyane wade and donald trump speak out on twitter in the wake of nba stars cousins fatal shooting. It was clumsy. Was this a social media problem for the ap . I said said earlier, were better at news gathering than we are at promotion. 170 years in ap, the kind of promotion thats Second Nature to somebody like you. I was going say that i screw up on twitter on a regular basis. I was just wondering if you have to talk to the staff about these kinds of tweets. We do all the time.
