Investigate President Trump. The reporter that reopened the epstein case. But first, do you hear that . Thats the deafening silence from fox news and its board of directors following the false claim that the White Supremacy problem in this nation is a hoax. Here is a fact. Since 9 11, there have been more murders by white wing extremists in america than islamic terrorists. If you judge a comment by the company it keeps, tuckers message was praised by the former kkk leader david duck. Tucker announced he will be taking a longplanned vacation. It is august, but this is a pattern we have seen before at fox. They nev amid all the turmoil, the Seven Members of fox board of directors have remained silent. Not remaining silent is three advertisers that will stop supporting the show. Now, with me now to discuss is the host of s. E. Cupp unfiltered and jean cosin and news anchor for univision. Let me start with you. You have known tucker for years. Is this consistent with the guy you knew or did he get the sense hes playing to foxs prime time audience . Well, you have been in this business as long as i have. And the way you keep friends is even, you know, you disagree with is you sort of separate. Yes, im friends with tucker and tucker is a great guy. But the Tucker Carlson personality on the show, i think, is playing to an audience. And that audience is largely male, older, white, aggrieved and sort of keying in on those grievances is something i think hes been doing since he got a show there. But his old bread and butter certainly was not raised politics. It was political correctness, free speech. He was far more libertarian than the public Tucker Carlson is today on the fox show. I think thats more a feature of fox and its audience than him. He is a smart guy. He is a good writer. He can be charming. But libertarian is the opposite of trumps nationalism. Polar, polar opposite. How much of the preppy persona was an Early Warning indicator . Im not sure that is a persona. That is how he was. Thats how he grew up. He went to prep school. He was an actual prep school graduate. I think tucker is authentic to himself. I think that, you know, again, the audience that hes playing to is a different one than he was in the past. And in the past, tucker was, as you say, smart, charming, funny, a great writer. So much so that he was known for making friends across the aisle. Rachel maddow really cultivated his career. It is why hes been able to live and swim in this political world for as long as he has, making friends who respect him even when they disagree with him. Again, hes so locked into a niche audience right now that it is sort of a one note that you are hearing. What you do with the camera, what you do with the microphone you are accountable for. You have been a guest on tuckers show many times. Is this time different, december piebing White Nationalism, White Supremacy as a hoax, does it change your calculus about going on air . The intention was to expose the audience to a different point of view, one they will probably hear anywhere where they get their information, get their news. And it has to be said, not only tuckers rhetoric, but also the president , this antilatino have now been replaced by violence and bullets. I think we have to, you know, have clear morality on this. And theyre in part responsible for what we saw in a place like el paso. The man responsible for this was inspired by some of the words, some of the rhetoric coming from them. So i think, you know, this is different in the sense that its now transcending into violence into bullets, into lots of life for our community that came under fire in el paso. You are saying this is a moral decision, or will you make the decision to continue going on tuckers show on fox to reach out beyond, or is this a step too far for you . You know, i havent been invited to his show after el paso, but i can tell you im not going back on fox show, on his show, on lauras show. Not only as a journalist, but as a human being right now, i dont think i have the moral responsibility to make it clear that this rhetoric is now being replaced by, again, violence and bullets. And in that sense, latinos coming under attack, it is not responsible for someone like me to go on and expose myself to whats happening at fox. Its a big statement. All right. Jane, i want to ask you this. A memo was sent to fox employees denouncing Donald Trumps immigration ban saying immigration is an essential part of americas strength and praising the unique perspective offered by many people who came to the u. S. In search of opportunity for unfettered selfexpression. Whats change . Its a complicated issue because the relationship between fox news and fox and the relationship between individual hosts on fox news is a complex one. Hope hicks when he moved over to work for fox sent a memo in support of Donald Trumps criminal Justice Reform bill. Except lately you started to hear a bunch of hosts talking about these people got out of jail because with drug charges. And, so, i think that the ability of the fox news board to really curtail fox news hosts is extremely limited. And i think its because Tucker Carlson is an extraordinarily popular prime time host, as is scene hannity. Those two entities are better known and better liked by the audience that fox is trying to cultivate than the fox board purportedly in charge. Yeah. And you get into the complexity of this feedback loop the way that audience cant be controlled in the way that some folks might think. You created something significant. I want to get your take on a quote from Kellyanne Conway because she tried to defend Tucker Carlson this week saying there is too much White Supremacy coverage. I think perhaps what tucker is saying, but you have to ask him, is that the outsized coverage it gets versus all forms of hate, antifa, antisemitism and all forms of hate have to really be reined in. Do you think antisemitism is less covered than White Nationalism, and do we have to choose . We could always devote more coverage to antisemitism especially since it is on the rise, but so is White Supremacy and it is especially important to cover when the people giving it lip service are none other than the president of the United States and some of our leaders in congress and some of our biggest media figures. It is important to cover that. And i think were giving it, you know, at least enough coverage. We could cover this more. I know last night on my show i had a reformed white supremacist on to talk about whether its a hoax, whether its real. He knows obviously personally its very real. Its on the rise. We talked about identifying it. Those kinds of conversations should be had more often, not less often. To kelly ans point, thats not what tucker was saying. Tucker was saying it is not actually problem. Why . I dont know. Because its not the leading cause of death in america. That doesnt mean its not real. She could spin it to be a media attack or critique, but it wasnt. Jane, whats your take . Its interesting. One, White National and antisemitism go hand in hand. If we remember the tree of life shooting last week, the person that committed that shooting was a dedicated White Nationalist that attacked the Jewish Community because he believed in the invasion of nonwhite people and immigrants. There is no reason why we cant talk about both and condemn both. I think also one of carlsons points was like, oh, if you put every White Nationalist in america in a stadium, it wouldnt be full. The people that committed the acts of september 11th, you know, its not like there were hundreds of people behind that attack, but they still, you know, created the murder of 3,000 americans. You know, the number of people involved should not be how you know, how we consider or view the impact of White Nationalist terror. We can remember the Oklahoma City bombing in just over 20 years ago, but we can also remember again and again these frequent acts of mass shooting, lone wolves all tied together by a specific ideology, which is a terrorist ideology. Its also its stunning to me that were even having this conversation about whether or not its real when the el paso shooting happened less than seven days ago. You know, the people who were, you know, who were murdered by a White Nationalist terrorist who drove more than 600 miles to target mexicans, in his own words, that happened, you know, burials are still taking place and it is absolutely inconceivable to me to be having this entire conversation thats rooted in whether or not White Nationalism is real when we see the body count that its caused. Thats exactly why appropriately sparked firestorm is not a hoax when you have a body count. Coming up, after a deadly White Nationalist attack against latinos, is the media putting the focus on the right place . Beauty editors have tried everything in search of a whiter smile. In the aftermath of the attacks in el paso, did the media put the focus on the wrong place . The headlines are faili inin ii illustrate this was the deadliest attack against latinos. A special 12 page print section naming the 1,196 mass shooting victims since 1966. Its definitely worth a read. Back with me and joining the conversation is the executive edit editor. Tim, let me start with you. You have been leading coverage on the ground for the local paper. Do you feel that the National Media has not put the focus on the community and the victims appropriately . I think there is some room for criticism there. You know, being a local local newspaper, we really focus on the community and the victims. Thats where our focus has been. Obviously we want to tell the story, but its really about the victims at this point. Back to you, do you think the National Media struck the right balance between remembering the victims and calling out antiimmigrants rhetoric that seems to have inspired the attack . This goes back to the issue of lack of diversity in our news room, not just in terms of gender and race. Latinos represent 7 of our news room when were 17 of the population. But generations, points of view and geography. One of the biggest lessons from the 2016 campaign was the lack of coverage from understanding from one of the regions that decided the election. Were making the same mistake with the border as the border has been the epicenter on cultural immigration. Whats missing from that discussion is a point of view of the border, the voices of journalists like the ones you have on today and who are some of the best in the country covering that region. An important point about inclus sievety. Nicole, you published a powerful piece for cnn about returning to your hometown in the aftermath of a mass shooting. What does el paso have to tell the rest of america about unity and diversity . Well, as i mention in my essay, i covered Mass Shootings numerous Mass Shootings before, and one thing that stands out about here, especially the community here, is that how united they are. You will see them say things like i got here the day after the shooting and like people were coming here to pray. They will just talk to each other and like embrace each other. And the community has really come together for this in ways that i actually hadnt seen before. And it speaks to how this community is. Im from here and i grew up here. Everybody will talk to you at the store. If you have a flat tire or like, you know, even if you just met somebody, they will talk to you right away. You know, like, its a very, very welcoming community, and that is obviously transpiring here in the aftermath of the shooting. So a town with a big heart setting a big example for all of us. Tim, i want to ask you about the president because he tried to bring the media saying that we contributed greatly to the anger and rage build up over many years. What is your response to the president . I would just say that our focus is really getting away from the rhetoric and really one of the great things about working for the Usa Today Network is we have a very diverse staff. We have gotten a tremendous amount of help from all over. We have a lot of hispanic journalists on the ground telling the real story. I just would hope that the u. S. Government would provide the same kind of support to the victims. Theyre the ones that are really hurting. Theyre the ones that need the support. Its not about just a quick sound bite. Its about lasting help to help these families recover. All right. If i may, you know, the man who committed this terrible crime drove ten hours to go to the city of el paso to this walmart. They both represent a daily social experiment where immigration defines National Identity and is not a threat to it. Again, the president didnt pull the trigger, but he has been pointing at the target, at that same tagt for too long. He happens to be the wrong target. He wasnt radicalized by islam. He came from dallas. And like most mass murders in this country, he was a white male who inspired ideas of White Nationalism. We will have to leave it there. Thank you very much. Now turning to the coverage of Donald Trumps bus to el paso, which left the president fuming, slamming the media on twitter and reaction to the negative press surrounding his handling of the el paso and day tan shootings, a backlash that intensified after these shooting showing trump smiling next to shooting visits. The president was also caught on tape bragging about the crowd size at his el paso rally several months ago. Joining us is the editor of the daily beast. The president tries to block reporters from covering the visit and then complains about the coverage. Is he setting a trap for himself . The white house is trying to shape the narrative here and saying they didnt want the press in. This wasnt a photo op. Minutes after the president leaves the hospital and dayton in particular, they release this video of the president shaking hands, hugging people with background music. That looks very much like a photo op. Then you have these other videos where hes bragging about his crowd size that you mentioned and some of the other photos that come out that makes it look like the president was all about himself rather than victims and the survivors of these shootings, which is where the focus should be. Yes, in part he is sending a trap for himself because the information we have coming out is all we have to go by. I want to call out one more thing. Kellyanne conway saying the media ignored the warning about White Nationalist terrorism. Thats not true. Take a listen. I looked at the testimony of fbi director chris ray. Christopher wray says white supremacist violence is a motivation for more and more cases of domestic terrorism. White supremacy is mind most of the domestic terrorism investigations. Once again we see alternative facts dont match reality. What is the best way to cover the white house when they do so much to divide . You have to point out the vast hypocrisy we see. The president does it himself. He says something on a tell prompter and then turns around to his twitter feed and we get to see what he really feels. So we are compelled to show the disdance there. Great to see you. Thanks for joining us. Up next, el paso sparked one of the biggest debates in journalism. How do you fairly cover a president that consistently strokes the racial divide .
