The house is a much bigger margin in terms of republicans and democrats right now. But there are more than a dozen seats that are now in play that were not in play even a few weeks ago. The implication being, if its too late to salvage Donald Trumps<\/a> president ial campaign, why not revoke his endorsement. The new verb on endorse that were all talking about, im sure paul ryan gave a lot of consideration. He was late to the endorsement to begin with. Its clear theres no love lost between these two. What hes trying to do is give his flock places to go. Theyre all trying to navigate this difficult terrain. They dont want to alienate the Republican Base<\/a>, which is donald trump right now, and they want to attract the extra voters they need, those suburban women, those College Educated<\/a> white voters they need to win in either their senate races or their house races. And there are lots of republicans on that call who are upset with paul ryan, because they believe he should be more firmly planted in the trump camp. But i think he just isnt personally, and what he did, as if they needed it, was give them permission to go their own way. Typical donald trump, you slap him, he slaps you right back. Listen to the tweet he posted right after paul ryan issued a statement. Paul ryan should spend more time on balancing the budget, jobs, and illegal immigration and not fighting republican nominee. I guess hes not going to revoke his endorsement, paul ryan, but donald trump seems to be interpreting it that way right now. And there clearly is a feud between them. Clearly donald trump has advertised himself as a counterpuncher. On one level, though, i almost want to say for donald trump compared to other tweets hes made and at other times, people in his own party and people in other parties, this was more tame. He didnt call him a loser or say anything obnoxious. He simply said get bag to doing what you do. Abby, this new poll, take a look at it. Trump Hillary Clinton<\/a> 46 , trump 35 . Only 35 , 11point advantage, some observers are suggesting a complete trump collapse. It could be. There are only a few weeks left. Theres not a whole lot of time for there to be Dramatic Movement<\/a> in his direction. For the clinton folks, theyre looking at these numbers and looking for validation on the state level, which is a little bit of a lagging indicator. So if they could have a little more license to say, we have some cushion here, we could move on to other places or we could expend some of our energy and money helping these down ballot candidates. I want to dig a little deeper into this nbc news wall street journal poll. Voters prefer the democrats take control of congress by 4942 . Thats the biggest advantage since october of 2013. So are we seeing this trump effect having a negative effect on republicans seeking reelection in congress . Yeah. For the republicans to avoid a trump effect, it would require voters to reverse what has been a fourdecade pattern to a voters are much more likely today than decades ago to vote the same way for president and congress. The ability to hold on to senate seats in the seven sates in particular that republicans are defending, that voted twice for president obama, has relied on their ability to convince more voters that have done that in recent years. You look at the polling, theyve been having some success. But the ability, the hole cannot get too big. So even if you can run ahead of donald trump, theres only so far ahead of him you can run. The key voters are College Educated<\/a> white voters. In pennsylvania, the poll, Hillary Clinton<\/a> was up 26 points with College Educated<\/a> whites. So republicans are having some success at getting separation with those voters. But again, if the hole gets too big, youre looking at kelly ayotte in new hampshire, pat toomey in pennsylvania, richard byrd in North Carolina<\/a>. It gets very difficult for them. Wolf, can i just give you another number from this poll that was stunning to me, which was Donald Trumps<\/a> approval rating, 29 . Yeah. 29 favorable. How do you win an election with 29 favorable . I dont know how you can. Whats the answer . There is none. The story of the fall has been, and really the story all summer, roughly 60 of the country says they do not consider him qualified. 60 consider him biased against women and minorities and hes polling around 40 . That adds up. The more relevant question is not what is his ceiling but what is his floor . Again, if he was polling at around 40 while Still Holding<\/a> big leads among not only nonCollege White<\/a> men but nonCollege White<\/a> women. But that latter group may become more difficult to hold on. Well see erosion for him, not only with the white collar white women where hes facing historic definites and blue collar white women. For the Republican Senate<\/a> candidates, the key here is that they need more voters to split their tickets, and even if they can achieve that, that only takes you so far. The hole gets big enough, its hard to climb out of. This new poll, hes only polling 35 , not only polling at 40 . 35 nationally. Do you believe the Clinton Campaign<\/a> should now rethink the states where theyre campaigning, states like indiana, missouri, because they could help down ballot candidates maybe get that majority in the senate, maybe even the house of representatives . Im not convinced that they are convinced that the time is yet right. Theres a lot of nervousness in the clinton camp about the dynamics of this race being so unpredictable for them. A couple of weeks ago, we were talking about a tight race. Thats very real for them. They understand that theyre dealing with a candidate who has a lot of weaknesses. Right now, the priority would be probably in states like arizona where they might be able to count on some demographic vans and then expand further. North carolina becomes a little more of a sure thing for them if these dynamics hold. But i think theres still a lot of nervousness among the clinton folks, not so much among democrats at large, who are eager for this map to expand. They can do kind of a head fake. They can say were going to expand to missouri and indiana where youve got Competitive Senate<\/a> races. What they can do is say were going force you to spend some money here, even though they dont really anticipate that theyre going to win indiana, for example. But they can certainly help out evan bayh to a degree, or they can say they are, and force the trump folks to think about spending some more money there. Thats the important sort of psychology of all of this, as you get into the haste month. You know, wolf, real quick, i say missouri or indiana is very tough. The core of trump has been his support among blue collar, middle class voters. So i think, the issue is at what point, if any, do they feel secure enough to make investments that are really targeted to the senate races. The paradox is arizona might be the best one on the list for clinton. But its probably the Toughest Senate<\/a> race, with john mccain with a significant lead. You have indiana and missouri where you have a better chance at the senate but a tougher road at the president ial level. Stand by. Everyone, stand by. He couldnt wait to say that. The other thing about it is, yes, as many people have said, there are shades of like an autocratic streak there, saying that he was essentially going to punish her. This is this tension for trump. On the one hand, going after her is going to probably alienate folks that he needs to get over that 40 threshold. But at the same time, his core supporters love him going after her. It stops the bleeding among that core, that base. But at the same time, does it do anything to bring in some undecided voters that he so desperately needs . No. My sense has always been that donald trump has to repair the dents in his own fender more than dent Hillary Clinton<\/a>s tender. For voters that doubt his temperament, the idea of the president ordering the appointment of a special prosecutor, a process that is supposed to go through the attorney general, is disconcerting. It leads to this sense that he doesnt have a full respect for the checks and balances. But again, much of what they have been doing through this campaign seems to be operating on the theory that if they energize their base enough, they will change the electorate and win that way, rather than appealing to what has been the tradition aleal electorate. So it kind of fits with that, but it may be more a question of shoring up the floor than expanding the ceiling. I think it is shoring up the floor. It is nixonian for somebody who complains about the president Obama Presidency<\/a> using executive order toos much. I heard from a republican pollster who has been doing focus groups with undecided voters. He said to me look, she wins when its about his treatment of people. But trump wins when its about her being dishonest. And that is why this notion of, im going to appoint a special prosecutor, put her in jail, you know, im going to put you in jail, thats another score with shoring up his base, because that works for him. If you listened to trumps speech today, as i did a couple of hours ago, he doubled down. He said if there are any more videotapes about him that come out, hes going to double down on bill and Hillary Clinton<\/a>. He also even brought up ted czech and chappequitic. He really is doubling down in this area. It seemed to me there may be more tapes to come out because he made that threat. This kind of its one of those unusual moments where yeah, hes shoring up his base, but he might be shaking loose the moderate republicans he needs to win. The Republican Base<\/a> isnt just the sort of hard core trump people. Its also moderate republicans who are so weakly committed to trump that these kinds of things only reinforce this idea that hes out of control, that he doesnt understand rule of law. I was surprised by how this most in that debate really broke through to just sort of regular people going about their day. This is what people are talking to me about. Its being reinforced in what theyre reading and hearing, because theyre looking at it and saying, well, this is what we expect from a dictatorship, not from the United States<\/a> of america. It makes people very uncomfortable. Theres never been a case in American History<\/a> where one Party Candidate<\/a> nominee has threatened to put the other one in jail if he elected president. And if he talked about the Supreme Court<\/a>, whats at stake in this election, your health care. The Supreme Court<\/a>. Your your pocketbook, your tax cuts. The College Educated<\/a> white voters hes trying to win over would listen to that argument. The Supreme Court<\/a> is a very effective argument for him to make but hes not making it. Hes talking about future the future possibility of sexual indiscretions. One of the byproducts one of the byproducts of that tape coming out, the access Hollywood Tape<\/a> coming out on friday night was, you know, when it looked for a minute like the bottom was going to come up on trump, it freed him up to go back to these fullthroated attacks that he was maybe leaning back from because it was about shoring up the base, not sort of making the case ron, go ahead. To glorias point, i mean, i thought the middle 30 minutes of last nights debate was his most effective stretch in either debate. It was the most conventional republican he ever was. He reminded republicans he wants to repeal obamacare, cut taxes, reverse the epa regulation on climate, appoint Supreme Court<\/a> justice. Nothing flashy about it. Three yards and a cloud of dust.
