CNNW The Lead With Jake Tapper December 17, 2018

The body. Now, thanks to the president s favorite news channel, hes wading in. Welcome to the lead, im jake tapper. We begin with the politics lead. With Close Associates being hauled off to prison, President Trump claims that crimes are not crimes while also changing the time line for a key aspect of the mueller investigation. In addition to his tweets about the, quote, russian witch hunt hoax, the president sent his attorney, Rudy Guiliani, to admit that then candidate trump had conversations about the proposed trump tower in moscow, even more recently than previously disclosed. Saying that trump told mueller he discussed the potential deal through the november 2016 president ial election. Much, much later than previously claimed. Recall that mueller had previously characterized the deal as potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and needing approval from the kremlin. Guiliani seeming to say the answer was given in response to muellers written questions, making the comments in an interview with abc news. But guiliani also seemed to assert that nothing matters. Claiming that none of these issues are crimes. Not the hush money payments to alleged romantic partners. Not any potential heads up from wikileaks about Hillary Clinton emails they were about to reveal. Not any questions of conspiracy between the trump team and the russian government. All of it, from mr. Guiliani, totally kosher. Cnns Kaitlan Collins at the white house. While guiliani was saying this, his client, the president was making some false assertions about the fbi raid on Michael Cohens office. Yeah. And the president s eyes, the fbi broke into Michael Cohens office and in everyone elses eyes they legally entered to perform an authorized search with even Michael Cohen, whose office was the one being raided, saying that the agents who did the search were both professional and courteous. But that doesnt matter to the president , because what he is doing is trying to undermine and discredit the many investigations that are now surrounding him. As the cloud of the russia investigation grows darker, President Trump is remaining calm in public. But i think its going to be a really exciting year. Reporter but out of view, making clear, hes starting to feel boxed in. Launching a fresh barrage of attacks on the special counsel. Tweeting nine times about the russia investigation this weekend, claiming it has nothing to do with collusion and is a democrat scam. Trump venting after a series of Court Filings from Robert Mueller and other u. S. Attorneys revealed there are investigations touching almost every aspect of his political and personal life. The president also going after Michael Cohen, his former attorney and fixer, who is now a convicted felon and cooperating witness. Calling him a rat and accusing the fbi of breaking into his office last april, despite agents using a search warrant. As trump remained behind closed doors sunday, his lawyer was in front of the camera and on the attack. Youve got a serial liar who taped his own client and lied about it. Reporter arguing the hush money payments to women alleging affairs werent Campaign Finance violations. Paying 130,000 to stormy whatever and paying 100,000 to the other one is not a crime. Reporter and rejecting the idea the president will ever sit down with Robert Mueller. Over my dead body. But, you know, i could be dead. Reporter all of this as washington is bracing for a partial Government Shutdown friday and the president and his aids are digging in on the border wall fight. Were going to do whatever is necessary to build the border wall. And that means shut down . If it comes to it, absolutely. Reporter and trump making good on his promise to shake up his staff. Announcing his interior secretary, ryan zinke, will lead amid a slew of ethics investigations. Just hours after trump abruptly named Mick Mulvaney as acting chief of staff. Not long after trump announced that pick, this video of mulvaney at a debate in 2016 surfaced. Yes, im supporting donald trump. Im doing so as enthusiastically as i can, even though i think hes a terrible human being. But the choice on the other side is just as bad. Reporter a spokesman for mulvaney said those comments were old news and he made them before he met President Trump. But that wasnt the only time he criticized the president before the election. In one facebook post, he said that in a dream world, both he and Hillary Clinton would be disqualified from taking office. Which, jake, is quite a change in tune now in recent weeks hes been lobbying to become the next chief of staff. And in just two weeks for today will take over for john kelly. Kaitlan collins at the white house. Lets chat about this with my experts. When it comes to the trump tower moscow, if everything is fine with this deal and there is nothing inappropriate, obviously nothing criminal, according to Rudy Guiliani, why are there so many different answers . First we were told they stopped talking about it in january 2016. Then june 2016, now november 2016. Thats suspicious, if there is nothing wrong. Yeah. It sure is. And listen, i dont think bill and i were talking about this before we got started here. President was running a business before this, and i dont think he had any duty to stop running that business. Michael cohen was negotiating those deals. It wasnt the president. He wasnt involved. Michael cohen, you know, relayed some things. So im not quite sure why he didnt just say, yeah, look, there were ongoing discussions and nothing came to fruition and i dont remember the last date i had the conversation but nothing came of it. And i think this is important to note. If there was some big quid pro quo, were going to help you become president , were going to give you this moscow deal, it never materialized. There was no moscow deal. There was no hotel. It was talk by Michael Cohen about getting a deal which he would be paid probably handsomely for. He was out pushing the envelope on it, probably shouldnt have been. And well see. Mueller obviously knows all. True that there is no trump tower moscow, but its also true that Robert Mueller seems to be focused on it quite a bit, based on the sentencing guidelines that he gave for Michael Cohen. He talked about how lucrative it was, potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars needing kremlin approval. So its of some importance to mr. Mueller. Right. And look, we dont have a lot of understanding of trumps investments, because he hasnt released his tax returns. So some of this is guesses. But there are a lot of scenarios here, which we dont know. And mueller knows more than we do, which is, you know, it could be money that they were in the hole for. It could be jared having trouble. All of these things weve been debating a little bit publicly. Mueller knows more than we do. But a big question has always been why, whats the motivation. And the follow the money aspect of it, which mueller is clearly following the money, is something that may lead to something. Its also something that the Senate Intelligence committee has been focused on. So well see. We dont know enough about his investments. Thats the truth. If we follow the money, we do see that the people who are culpable, facebook, amazon yeah. We follow that money, its pretty clear there were some people who have dirty hands here. And well talk about that in the next segment. Bill, i want you to take a listen to some of the things that mr. Guiliani said in which he talked about what is a crime and what is not a crime. Because it was very interesting, and i think it differs a little bit with what the Justice Department thinks. Its not a crime, george. Paying 130,000 to stormy whatever and paying 100,000 to the other one is not a crime. If roger stone gave anybody heads up about wikileaks leaks, thats not a crime. Collusion is not a crime. Now, in terms of the last one, there is no crime collusion. Its conspiracy. That would actually be the crime. But it seems like hes trying to kind of rewrite the penal code. Yeah. I dont know, maybe without so much success. This is Rudy Guiliani, the hardnosed prosecutor. Why is Rudy Guiliani why do we know who he is today . Because he pushed the boundaries, i would say, of Law Enforcement, maybe in a good way, mostly and locked up a lot of people in new york. The broken windows theory. First as u. S. Attorney, locking up white collar people. Then becoming famous for that. And then as mayor. I think on the whole doing a lot of good for new york with tough anticrime policy. Wasnt quite as lenient when it came to poor kids from the inner city who maybe he was being tough on. Maybe it was good for the city. He what . Stop and frisk was not good. I dont know, whatever. Thats a separate issue. Wasnt that bloomberg . That was guiliani and then bloomberg. Certainly the reforms of the 90s were good. But the Republican Party not such a law and order party any more. Yeah. Thats the argument i think simone was about to make. Absolutely not a law and order party. Rudy guiliani, who, again, locked up large swaths of black and brown, poor people. I would say poor people in general, as well, via stop and frisk policies. Policies that were racial pro filing, if you ask me. Rudy guiliani, in my opinion, has really fell off the wagon in this respect. And if this is what the trump team wants to trot out as their legal defense, im concerned about their legal strategy, jake. I just think what hes talking about is kind of technical. How many angels can dance on the head of a pin here in terms of what constitutes Campaign Finance violation. But i would like to be clear. Campaign finance violations and laws, theyre pretty clear in large theres not a lot of wiggle room. I think there are lawyers who disagree with you. Trying to pay off women, because you thought it would affect your campaign, and you used Campaign Finances to do that. Whether it was a paying somebody back if you did that its called mens rea. The president thought then candidate trump, this would affect his campaign. That is a violation of Campaign Finance law. In the edwards case, it was a hung jury, and not prosecuted again. So i dont know that it was more clearcut. I dont want to get into the weeds of this, but american media, inc. , the Parent Company of the national enquirer, they asserted in the nonprosecution that they did it to affect the election. They said. They said it. Not trump. And remember what republicans when republicans disapproved of john edwards behavior. Now hes held up as a shining bright shining example. Hes almost as innocent as john edwards. No, im saying im trying to explain the rudy comments. Trying to explain what Rudy Guiliani i think is trying to say. This is a very technical part of the law. And that there may not be as clearcut as people may what Rudy Guiliani is trying to do is state nothing that trump did, that is horribly wrong, and all of the people around him is illegal. Now, he has a very strange understanding of the law, even given his background. So hes im not even sure hes the right one to say that. But hes trying a pr game right now. Thats what hes doing. He sees it circling around trump and his people and hes trying to tell people, none of this is bad. Yes, he did all of this, but there is nothing to worry about here. The one that we can talk about the payoffs to the women and whether that was done to affect the election or protect his family you can talk about collusion as a word versus conspiracy. But the claim that roger stone gave everybody presumably a heads up on the campaign about wikileaks, i think that would be considered a crime because thats considered conspiracy, given that even the director of the cia, mr. Mike pompeo, your friend, says that wikileaks is a front for russian intelligence. Thats assuming that roger stone talked to Julian Assange at wikileaks and had some knowledge about that. And it wasnt just simply guessing. But thats not what Rudy Guiliani said. Rudy guiliani said on the sunday shows yesterday, if roger stone gave the campaign folks a heads up, its not a crime. Well, he couldnt give a heads up if he didnt have information. So its assumed he had information. I would like to know the goalposts keep moving. At first there was no collusion, no crimes, no payments. And now were so beyond goal posts. That whole metaphor has to be abandoned. We dont have goal posts any more. I, like everybody, wants to see the mueller report. Its good for america to get it out quickly. And thoroughly. And hell be the ultimate arbiter, not any of us. Not me, not Rudy Guiliani. Cnns drew griffin spoke to him. They convinced you. Very easily. Very easily. Some of the things were, you know, sketchy. But at the end of the day, still fitness. And jake, one of the most important things to note here is that despite the huge amount of evidence of russian interference, one of the reports says the big social Media Companies only handed over the bare minimum amount of data required by the Senate Intelligence committee. So there are likely many more russian accounts that have not been identified, just as we gear up for the 20 election. Jake . Alex, thank you so much. Lets bring in counterterrorism analyst, phil mudd, who worked for both the fbi and the cia. First off, just as a general impression, is there anything in this report that stands out to you or surprised you . Yeah. There are a couple of things. When we first started hearing about this a few years ago, youre thinking, maybe theyre trying to manipulate a few facebook accounts. Audacity and agility. Theyre not trying to manipulate a few facebook accounts. Theyre managing this thousands of miles away. People who are sophisticated enough to understand geography, how does that change north, south, east, west. To understand that day by day as the messaging from the campaigns change. How do you change that . Let me get real granular. How do you put that in language, american english, so people dont immediately step back and say, thats foreign propaganda. Whoever was doing this was audacious. And in terms of agility, understanding the technical environment well enough to say its not just twitter and facebook, were transitioning to instagram, which is more of a new generation thing and moving away from facebook. Im stepping back, saying, they werent trying to change an election, theyre trying to change america. And i guess the basic question i have is, are the russians on their own sophisticated enough to know how to do this, or could they only do so with help from americans . Do they know all of this stuff already . Are they that smart . Are they that sophisticated . If i were them running this, and as i watch what i witnessed in the past couple years, i would say, whether its unwitting or witting, and i suspect most is unwitting, they had to be using people who knew how to manipulate this media, who had inside information, not inside in terms of secrets, but inside information, even as simple as how does america work. If youre looking not only at language but looking at geo graphic differences, to anticipate you can train native russians thousands of miles away to keep the pulse on that kind of political change day by day, almost minute migby minute from thousands of miles away, i dont buy that. I dont think you could train an american to do that. So there was a study by the Washington Post and New York Times looking at the same data that concluded that 4. 4 million americans who voted for obama in 2012 did not vote at all in 2016. 4. 4 million. And a third of them were black. Now, the big thing thats lacking in all of these reports is we dont know how effective any of this was. Any of this interference by the russians. But when you look at what they were doing, and then you look that it was less than 90,000 votes, fewer than 90,000 votes in three states, may flip the difference. And that it was 4. 4 Million People who didnt vote, who voted for obama four years before, and a third were black. I mean, it looks like, well, this might have made a difference. Looks like . Lets cut to the chase. We saw what they were doing in helsinki. The president may not have liked it, but we forget that putin got up there said, excuse me, yes, i wanted President Trump to win. And if you look at the sophistication of the operation, some of it, im not a political expert, but even as an average american, im looking at this saying this is voter suppression. The this is a way to both energize people who support the president and also discourage people who dont potentially support this president. So i look at this not simply as something thats sort of a minimal effort in the campaign. This is a very sophisticated, huge effort to say, how do we stop people from voting in america . And i thought probably pretty effective. And doesnt look Like Congress knows what to do to stop it in the future. Well, ill tell you. I think we took a great step today. After all of the time we have spent hammering and i think appropriately, the house divisions in the congress about how to proceed with this investigation, the senate got outside expertise and has the information. Next step, what are they going to do with it. Phil mudd, thank you so much. President trumps former National Security adviser hours from learning if he will spend time behind bars, and if so, how much. Now two of his friends are facing charges. Well explain why. Stay with us. And just like you, the further into winter we go, the heavier i get. And while your pants struggle to support the heavier you, your roof struggles to support the heavier me. [laughter] whoo. [crash] and your cutrate insurance might not pay for this. So get allstate, you could save money and be better protected from mayhem like me. Mayhem is everywhere. Former fbi director, james comey absolutely unleashed on President Trump and republicans just moments ago. Comey said President Trump has damaged the fbis reputation with his, quote, constant lies, and he attempted to shame republicans for staying silent about it. Republicans used to understand that the actions of a president matter. The words of a president matter. The rule of law matters and the truth matters. Where are those republicans today . At some point, someone has to stand up and in the face of fear of fox news, fear of their base, fear of mean tweets, stand up for the values of this country and not slink away in retirement. Cnns manu raju is live on capitol hill. And manu, you were there questioning comey as he came out of that closeddoor hearing this afternoon. What else did he have to say . Yeah. In addition to slamming republicans and the president for not defending the rule of law, he also defended the actions that he took as fbi director, including things that have come under scrutiny in recent days, including the interview of Michael Flynn, the president s former National Security adviser, by fbi agents. There has been yeticicriticism the flynn camp it was not done properly. He said it was. He also defended his decision not to tell the former acting attorney general, sally yates, that flynn was being interviewed until the day of the interview, saying had he done that, the white house would have strongly criticized an obama holder for going after the National Security adviser for President Trump. And i asked him directly about the president s tweet from over the weekend that Michael Cohen is a rat. Heres what he said. This is the president of the United States calling a witness who has cooperated with his own Justice Department a rat. Say that again to yourself at home and remind yourself where we have ended up. This is not about republicans and democrats. This about what does it mean to be an american . What are the things that we care about above our policy disputes, which are important. There is a set of values that represent the glue of this country and they are under attack by things just like that. Now, in the room, james comey was asked about his decision not to publicly announce if President Trump was not under investigation. And he told members, according to a source briefed on the matter, he probably made the right decision not to announce that publicly, because based on public reporting, the president appears to be under investigation now. So democrats and republicans were taking aback by those comments, jake. All right. Manu raju on capitol hill, thank you so much. I saw you nodding, jen sake, even though i know in october 2016, you werent nodding much at what james comey had to do when he announced that Hillary Clinton reopened the case. But you agree now. I think hes saying the right things. The problem is that he is somebody who is clearly thinking about his own reputation. He obviously had to testify. But hes out there in public fab more than i think either party would prefer. Its sad, because the point he was making about how the president of the United States should operate, which is what i was nodding to, how he should conduct himself, is absolutely correct. And there are senior nonpartisan republican members of Law Enforcement who should be saying those things. But hes just not the right messenger right now. You know, i watched that, jake. And i watched him in the hallway full of indignation and just being very forceful. And i think, where was that guy when donald trump when they had this exchange. When trump says, hey, can you take it easy on flynn . And comey doesnt say anything and runs out and scribbles it down in his notebook. And when asked under oath by senator feinstein at a hearing, he said i guess i just land the courage to come forward and tell the committee. So here you have this guy now standing in the hallway of the house, full of indignation and being strong and saying somebody needs to do these things, somebody should have done these things. Why didnt he just walk up and say, mr. President , you cant ask me to take it easy on general flynn, because im not chief Law Enforcement guy here in this case. So its wrong for you to do that. Hes clearly recognizing the error of his ways, and at a lot of moments. Perhaps that certainly in the Hillary Clinton moment. But the problem is, its just a little too little, too late, publicly, is the issue, i think. President trump isnt just going after Michael Cohen and calling him a rat. He went after you, bill. Didnt call me a rat. Didnt call you a rat. Just an unsuccessful publisher. He went after you, the weekly standard. He had editor at large. And he attacked you. And what did you think when you heard that . I was one of those who started it in 1995 with fred barnes, published many fine people like jake tapper. I came across that over a decade ago. And no wonder we didnt make it. No. [ laughter ] low standards. It was high standards, including your fine piece, which i reread, because someone put it online this weekend. Oh, you know, it was just silly. He said the last line, may they may they rest in peace. I guess my response to that is, were not really resting in peace. The magazine may be gone, at least for now. Maybe there will be a successor but i think steve hayes and i and John Mccormick and others who dont think donald trump is an appropriate representative of american conservatism and a good president , well keep on saying what we believe. What did you make of comeys remarks today, simone . Look, i think that you wont ever hear me jumping out, trying to leap over leaps and bounds to defend the fbi. But james comey to jens point, has realized the error of his ways, but he will never be the best messenger, even if what he is saying is true. I know a lot of folks inside the building at the fbi love him. He is very wellrespected in the building. He has done a lot when it comes to diversity, promoting younger members of Law Enforcement, giving opportunities. But the fact of the matter is, he made some real blunders and missteps in 2016. Blunders and missteps he cannot fix with a press conference in the halls of congress. So youre with jen that he should zip it. Look, he has to go and testify. Hes doing his due diligence. But in terms of the pontificating and what is in my opinion grandstanding, hes not the one. Mueller will never write a book. Thats all im saying. Probably true. Also in our politics lead tomorrow, former trump National Security adviser, Michael Flynn, will finally learn if he spends any time in prison. A judge will hand down a sentence. His sentence comes on the shadow of two former associates whose indictments were unsealed earlier today, revealing they illegally lobbied on behalf of turkey. Flynn is referenced as person a. Cnns kara scannel joins me now. Jake, so the turkish government blames the cleric for being behind a coup to overthrow the government. And beginning with that coup attempt which the cleric has denied, the turkish government has been trying to get him extradited to their country. So what we have learned through the charges today, the involvement of the turkish government was much more extensive than what was believed to have been the case. These two men were charged with conspiring to avoid registering as a foreign agent. And so what we have learned is that the turkish government was actually deciding the budget for this program. It was a lobbying mpr campaign and they were very closely involved in it over the several months it was under way. So these are the new details that weve learned on this. And, you know, it comes just ahead of Michael Flynns sentencing tomorrow, jake. These were flynns associates. Hes person a in the documents. Why isnt he being charged . Well, what we learned from the sentencing memorandums that circulated last week between the government and Michael Flynns lawyers is Michael Flynn has been a significant cooperator, with not just the special counsels office but other prosecutors. And even learned in those filings that flynn is cooperating with him on three criminal probes. This appears to be one of them, because flynn was involved in this. He had the intimate details and even wrote an oped that was a key piece of this lobbying mpr campaign, jake. Cara, thank you so much. In our world lead, President Trump now says he will review the case of a former green beret charged by military court with premeditated murder. Army major Matt Goldstein admitted he killed a bomb maker in 2010 out of fear the bombmaker would retaliate against an afghan leader. Thats according to army documents obtained by the Washington Post. Goldstein and another soldier took the bomb maker off base, killed him, and ultimately burned his corpse in a trash heap. Human rights watch said his actions appear to be a summary execution. Lets bring in jim sciutto. The pentagon says this is a criminal matter. Why is President Trump involving himself in it . Well, it appears the spark, jake, was, he saw the story on fox news. Because in the tweet, he tagged the fox news anchor who had reported the story. And the essential facts here the open question, as you laid out is, did he do this under orders or not under orders . And the fact is, its an ongoing investigation, an investigation being conducted by the u. S. Army. And yet the president , as commanderinchief, the chain of command, inserting himself into that investigation over the weekend. President trump threatening to insert himself into an ongoing criminal investigation. This time about a former special forces officer who admitted on National Television to killing an accused bomb maker, who was in u. S. Custody in afghanistan. Trump tweeting on sunday, quote, at the request of many, i will be reviewing the case of a u. S. Military hero, major Matt Goldstein, charged with murder. What sparked his interest . Apparently a story that aired on fox news. Mr. Trump tagging the anchor who broadcast the story in his tweet. Major goldstein, the soldier the president referred to, is charged with murdering the accused bomb maker in afghanistan in 2010. According to the Washington Post, the man was suspected of making explosives similar to those used to kill two marines with goldsteins unit. However, according to the New York Times and Washington Post, the suspected bomb maker was not on the predetermined kill list, and he was unarmed. The u. S. Army has been investigating the incident intermittently since 2011, when goldstein admitted to the killing while taking a polygraph test for a job with the cia. The army closed the case after determining it did not have any evidence to were tprosecute, acg to the post. Goldstein again admitted to the killing, this time in an interview in 2016 and also on fox news. Did you kill the bomb maker . Yes. Goldstein lawyer says the killing occurred during a mission ordered by his superiors and there is no evidence to justify reopening the case. There was nothing described in bretts interview that the army didnt have back in 2011. The president s statement that he will review the matter raises troubling questions about whether his praise for goldstein could unduly influence the prosecution. The pentagon tells cnn, quote, the allegations against major Matt Goldstein are a Law Enforcement matter. The department of defense will respect the integrity of this process. The question is whether the potential jurors, it influences their decision or the prosecutors. Those are open questions. There are legal experts we spoke to who says the president is so far removed from the immediate chain of command, that is unlikely to happen. But certainly, of course, jake, this is a pattern with this president. Often inserting himself into things that are ongoing and that you want that separation ideally by the rule of law between the executive and the judicial branches when the military is involved, as well. Jim sciutto, thank you so much. Boy, i remember the hue and cry when president obama said that a Police Officer in cambridge had acted stupidly, because he asked professor henry lewis gates about whether or not that was his house he was in. Here we have a president inserting himself in a much graver situation. The clean old days of the beer summit. I remember it fondly. Look, i think this is a difficult case to hear about. Because hes obviously somebody who has been served in the military. But there are rules of engagement for a reason. Theres a military investigation for a reason. It was going through that process. So when the president of the United States, the commanderinchief, inserts himself, hes really undercutting his own military. And thats how we should view this no doubt, a difficult case to look at. And i think the details of it are also difficult to hear. I mean, he took this person off base, and he killed him and burned his body, as it said. Now, whether this person this person was obviously accused of doing very terrible, horrible things to americans. He expressed a concern about what he might do. All of these things are taken into account by the military process. Its in place for a reason. David, you served. You were in the first gulf war, and i have not served, but i know a lot of people who served in afghanistan. I wrote a book about it. And ive heard their frustrations when they have to let somebody go they think is likely going to commit acts of violence. The fact pattern here this guy was found not an alleged bomb maker, but found bombmaking supplies. He killed americans. He killed afghans. He would have done so again. I think major goldstein said i had to do it, because i couldnt live with myself if he killed someone else. But thats not the process. I understand. But that was a statement, i believe, he made to folks. And im not sure the military investigated in 2010, i believe. He was let he resigned under honorable conditions. He was stripped of his medals and green beret and allowed to kind of walk away from it. So im not sure what new facts have emerged is isince that tim that are going to overturn that. Well wait and see. Your son served in the marines. Again, as jen points out, its tough, because these people put themselves in life or death situations. Not of their own volition. But there are rules of engagement. Yeah. And i think most a huge majority of soldiers, marines, pilots, went to a lot of trouble to follow rules of engagement. Sometimes they didnt like them. Petraeus changed when he took over in 2010, i guess it was, in ways that i think the people on the ground liked. But these were, you know they were very careful to try not to kill innocent people or even kill guilty people without really being sure they were guilty. Not to do it in this extra way. This is like marcus luttrell, if you read the book, lone survivor, they have a big debate on the hillside and capture these goat herders. If we let them go, a bunch of people will kill us. What do we do. Let them go, and sure enough, the hugest loss of life in history. But here is an instance of President Trump seeing a report on fox news, not finding out more about it, just going by what he saw, picked up, and then changing policy or trying to change policy or inserting himself in policy. Ive heard some people say we shouldnt really worry about staterun media. Its the mediarun state thats the concern here. Mediarun state, cc, fox news, fox business, whatever else is out there. I think folks should and i keep saying this. Folks should be concerned. There used to be a really high bar about the things that get to the president s desk. The things that come across the president s purview for he or she hopefully sometime soon maybe sooner than later, to consider. Now all donald trump has to do is turn on the television in his office or in the residence or wherever he is, and see something on fox news, and he thinks this is what im going to talk about. Now, i fox news and i know we dont like to disparage other networks and what not. But unfortunately, the bar that has been applied to other networks such as our network and nbc, msnbc, is not the same bar that is applied at fox. There are a whole swath of americans who only watch fox news, who only get their news from a different network, that does not have a high bar, that is not factchecking. That is not vetting. That is why this is so dangerous. Theyre not the president , meanwhile, changed the channel at one point this weekend and i think he was watching saturday night live. He possibly saw a skit like this when he was watching. Hey, mr. Trump, i just wanted to say merry christmas. Its President Trump, sarah. Oh, thats a good one. Thats from a skit called its a wonderful trump. Where donald trump is not elected president. The president tweeted, quote, a real scandal is the onesided coverage of Networks Like nbc and democrats spin machines like saturday night live, all nothing less than unfair News Coverage and dems. Cant be legal. Only defame and belittle. Collusion . Bill . So now the president wants to investigate nbc news and saturday night live . I mean, he just wants to say he wants to investigate them, i suppose. This is the point about trump. Look, if he thinks its an injustice, that the military is involved in cya and whatever and is doing an injustice, he can pardon that person and say i am going to call up general jack keane and get five Senior Officers together and privately look at this for me personally. Thats a normal process. And theyre going to report to me offline and im going make my own discussion, because im really concerned about this case. So there are ways if you wish to intervene it is legitimate to do so and maybe appropriate to do so, if you think the military bureaucracy is messing up. What isnt gets everyone up in arms and confused and irritated and diminishes seems to diminish the concern for the rules of engagement and so forth. Final word . Social media in the military world is you probably follow, really blowing up about this. I dont think the president just got this from fox. No, a lot of people were angry. It is really out there, not just one show. Hes been hearing about it from lots and lots and lots of people. So absolutely. All right, everyone. Two desperate fights.
