Transcripts For CSPAN Key Capitol Hill Hearings 20160928

Out of her grandparents home grandparents home. The woman she worked for realize how much my mother wanted to go to high school. And so she said to her, if you early, get your chores done, you can go to high school. That is what my mother did for four years. She got up early and she literally had to run, run to get to high school. It sounds harsh, but not for my mom. She thought it was such a great gift of kindness that this woman gave her a place to live, gave her food to eat, gave her the chance to go to high school. So, when i talk about us being stronger together, and not just talking about what our government needs to do. I am talking about what each of us can do to contribute. We do need to make sure [applause] sec. Clinton we need to make sure that our economy does work for everyone, not just those at the top. And that means we have to make investments in more good, new jobs. Infrastructure jobs. Advanced manufacturing jobs. Technology and innovation, Clean Renewable Energy jobs. And we have to do more to help Small Businesses because that is where most of the new jobs will come from. As i said last night, my dad was in Small Business was a Small Businessman. When he got out of the navy after world war ii, he started a Small Business with drapery fredericks. He had a plan in chicago. It was a dark room, there was no natural light. He had two long tables. He spread the fabric on the table. He would take silk screens, if you have ever seen one. Then he would start at one end, he would pour the paint and he would take the squeegee. He would go all the way down and start on the other table. He would do that until he got the job done. I would help him out from time to time, so i knew how hard he worked. But he was so proud that he could give us a good middleclass life because his dad was a factory worker. And so he was able to do what we want to see in america. Keep going, keep reaching, move as high as your hard work and ambition will take you. So i want us to have an economy that works for everyone. To grow the economy, to create more jobs. But i also want a fairer economy. Because [applause] sec. Clinton when you work hard, you should not be still in poverty at the end of the year. But if you are a minimumwage worker, if you work fulltime minimumwage, you will make 15,000 a year. Two thirds of minimumwage workers are women, most of them with families to support. And i have talked to a lot of these women. Sometimes at a cafe. Or sometimes i will be in a store and i will just Start Talking to them and they were tell me, one of the most humbling experiences. You are open to it, people will to it, people will tell you what is on their mind and hearts. I met women who are working to minimum wage jobs to make enough to support their kids. The inside the Rate Commission has established a format that will allow you to the candidates 30 seconds. The ones to help make the profits in the first place. It makes no sense to me. Would only go to the top executives. I want more people in more jobs to realize the benefits of their hard work. Last night at the debate, one of my guess was mark cuban. Now, mark cuban, who is a real by thee friday way used he has profitsharing from his very First Successful business and he not only use it when the business was going but when the business was sold he shared the profit from the sale right and made 300 of his employees millionaires overnight. Now, that is the kind of Business Leadership i want to hold up, because what we have seen from my opponent as someone whos on Campaign Manager has a lot ofuilt businesses on the backs of the little guy. Stiffing people. Dishwashers, painters, plumbers, architects, glass installers. Drapery installers. Across america. Some of them have come or word, you can go to their website our website and see their story. As i said last night, i am glad my dad never had a contract with donald trump when he was running his Small Business. Making theition to economy fare we have got to make workingbetter for families who are trying to balance families and work. You know, it is really hard out there, isnt it. To christine story, getting up, going to school, going to work, going to another job, that is not an uncommon story. We have made it really hard for a lot of people. So heres what i think we need to do. I want more families to be able to go as far as their hard work will take them and i have heard a lot of stories. People have told me about the difficult voices they face and the threat they are under. Finally, because every other advanced economy has done this lets have paid family leave so when you are sick or your child is sick or you have a newborn, you can take care of your loved ones. And lets have earned sick days so you do not lose your job because you are sick or you go to work because you are sick. And, lets finally have a inordable childcare, which lots of states cost as much or more as instate college tuition. I do not think any family should ever have to pay more the end 10 of your income to child and were going to fix that so that becomes a the norm. Lets make sure that every Educational Opportunity is available without sending you into debt and breaking your budget. Tomorrow in new hampshire, Bernie Sanders and i are going to talk about the college plan for debtfree college at public universities that he and i have worked on since the end of our primary. I want every family in North Carolina to know help is on the way. We are also going to work so you yourefinance the debt already have at much lower rates and get it paid off a lot sooner. [cheers and applause] sec. Clinton how are we going to do that . We are want to go where the money as a and the money is at the top. After going to go millionaires, billionaires, and corporations. We are going to close corporate loopholes. And i believe we can get that done, in part because youre going to send deborah ross to the senate. Youre going to have another craddick senator. Our governmente needs to start working for everybody again, not just those who have lobbyists and lawyers and influence. That has not worked out so well. We have got to get back to first principles. Give the maximum opportunities to the maximum number of americans and to especially focus on people who are working their way out of poverty and people in the middle class who want to go as far as they can go. Lets see a government for the struggling, this driving, and the successful. So, i am excited about what we are doing. I really a. M. A end, you know, i am going to leave into the factcheckers to go through all of Donald Trumps claims. There was a lot of work for factcheckers last night. But here is a couple of things that caught my attention. He actually bragged about gaming the system to get out of paying his fair share of taxes. In fact, i think there is a strong probability he has not paid federal taxes a lot of this is a man who goes around calling our military a disaster. Who goes around criticizing every institution from health care to education. Our veterans. He probably has not paid a penny to support our troops or our veterans or our schools or our health care systems. [applause] sec. Clinton and when i confronted him with the reason he will not turn in his tax returns and i said maybe is paid zero, he said that makes him smart. Not paying taxes makes him smart, what does that make all of the rest of us . You know, i have got to tell you bill and i have an blessed. We did not come from millionaires. My husbands biological father died before he was born. His mother went to Nursing School in order to support him. They struggled. They worked hard. Had the chance to education. Pursue his dreams, and of being president. My dad, as i told you, worked hard. I have released all of our tax returns going back 40 years. [applause] sec. Clinton if you look, you you will see that we paid the highest rate. We tried to give 10 to charity because we believe in this country and we believe with the blessings that we have been given, we should do our part. Applause] hillary] ing sec. Clinton you know, the other thing he admitted last night was that he actually rooted for the housing crisis to happen. I do not think i would make the big bragging point out of that like, hey,ed to feel it shows you how smart i am. He basically said, yes, if the Housing Market crashes i can go in and buy stuff and make some more money. Ive got to tell you, what kind of person believes that . Would wantf person familiesor 9 million losing their homes . One who should never be president is the answer to that question. [cheers and applause] sec. Clinton and he made it very clear he did not prepare for that debate. Ofone point he was kind digging me for spending time off the campaign trail to get prepared, but just trying to keep track of everything he says took a lot of time and effort. And i said, yes, you know what . I did prepare and i will tell you what else i prepared for, i prepared to be president of the United States and i think that is good. So, so as i said before we have two different visions here. Thate stronger together, is at the core of my years of advocacy and Public Service, i believe that america is already great and it is our responsibility to make it even greater. I believe that as we make our economy work for everyone we also need to keep our country safe. And we need to provide strong, steady leadership in the world with our allies and partners. My views on at range of National Security in on policy issues. I have laid out my plans for deviating in destroying isis and what we hear from my opponent is dangerously incoherent. It is unclear exactly what he is saying. But words matter. Like heht it sounded was basically telling our treating allies in asia, we are not sure were going to be there for you even know we have a defense treaty. Words matter. People here that and they start to doubt america is in tension. I felt like i had to jump in and say, i just want clear. Treaties. Nor our we will support our allies and our partners. Know, this is not reality tv. This is real. It gets. Real as were going to get the economy working for everybody. Not just those at the top. Were going to keep america safe, provide strong, steady leadership and we are going to bring our country together across the divide that has pitted the americans against each other. Economic worries are not the only ones keeping families up at night, are they russian mark there is still a lot we do not know about the recent incidents and tulsa in charlotte, but this week no. But thisto bring we do know. We have to bring people together, make it clear that to is safer when there is respect from the law for the communities they protect and respect for the law from the communities that are protected will stop that are protected. And, we have got to do something about the epidemic of done violence that has taken too many , too many lives and our country. Again, i think we can come together, you know, a very large majority of americas and a majority of done owners believe in conference of background checks. They believe that the second amendment, as i do. A belief in the right of individuals to have guns, as i do. But they believe, along with me, that we should not let guns fall into the wrong hands of people who will use them to kill other people and make it so easy to get them. But itre is work to do is great work, important work, starting right here in North Carolina. Left. E 42 days this election is going to be close, they all are these days. That is why every call you make, every door you knock on, every friend you registered to vote could make the difference. Textt you, if you can, to now. I hear there is a big overflow room. To my friends in the overflow, we want you to be just as involved as anyone else. Thank you for coming. [cheers and applause] sec. Clinton so remember, here in North Carolina starting on october 20 you can register and vote early, both at the same time. Onestop early voting site in your county. And remember, it is not just the president ial race. It is the governors race, lieutenant governors race, the u. S. Senate race, and other races up and down the ticket. Want to prove who we are as americans in this election. We are not careful. We do not want to build walls, we want to build bridges. Want to turn against each other, we want to work with one another. Againt to set big goals here in our country. I have got some big goals i know we can achieve. Climate change, which my opponent says is a hoax perpetrated by d chinese. Be one of the biggest Economic Opportunities our country is ever seen and i want is to take advantage of that. And benefit thing from it. That is what i am offering. Were going to deploy a half a billion more solar panels in the first four years of my administration. We will produce enough clean power to power every home in america within 10 years and we are going to lead the world. Some countries want to be the Clean Energy Superpower of the 21st century. The way things are stacking up, i think it is either going to be germany, china, or us. Us i want it to be us and it is going to be as usa] hanting sec. Clinton that is exactly right. I love this country, i am proud of this country, i want to be a leader who brings people together in our country. Sets the goals, goes about the business of achieving them, and proves once and for all that love trumps hate. Thank you [cheers and applause] Federal Reserve chair janet yellen will brief members of the u. S. Services committee on the monetary policy. You can watch live at cspan. Org or listen live on the cspan news breaking overnight that former israeli perez passedmon away overnight. President obama awarded him with the Nobel Peace Prize. Here is that ceremony. Pres. Obama good evening, everybody. Please have a seat. On behalf of michelle and myself, welcome to the white house on this beautiful summer evening. The United States is fortunate to have many allies and partners around the world. Of course, one of our strongest allies, and one of our closest friends, is the state of israel. And no individual has done so much over so many years to build our alliance and to bring our two nations closer as the leader that we honor tonight our friend, shimon peres. [applause] pres. Obama among many special guests this evening we are especially grateful for the presence of shimons children tzvia, yoni and chemi, and their families. Please rise so we can give you a big round of applause [applause] pres. Obama we have here someone representing a family that has given so much for peace, a voice for peace that carries on with the legacy of her father, Yitzhak Rabin and thats dalia. We are grateful to have you here. [applause] pres. Obama leaders whove helped ensure that the United States is a partner for peace and in particular, im so pleased to see secretary madeleine albright, who is here this evening. [applause] pres. Obama and one of the great moral voices of our time and an inspiration to us all professor elie wiesel. [applause] pres. Obama the man, the life that we honor tonight is nothing short of extraordinary. Shimon took on his first assignment in bengurions haganah, during the struggle for israeli independence in 1947, when he was still in his early 20s. He ran for president of israel and won when he was 83. [laughter] pres. Obama by the way, i should mention that i just learned that his soninlaw is also his doctor. And i asked for all his tips. [laughter] pres. Obama shimon has been serving his nation and strengthening the bonds between our two nations for some 65 years, the entire life of the state of israel. Bengurion and meir, begin and rabin these giants of israels founding generation now belong to the ages. But tonight, we have the rare privilege in history and thats to be in the presence of a true founding father. Shimon, you have never stopped serving. And in two months well join our israeli friends in marking another milestone your 89th birthday. [applause] pres. Obama now, i think shimon would be the first to tell you that in the ups and downs of israeli politics, he has been counted out more than once. But in him we see the essence of israel itself an indomitable spirit that will not be denied. Hes persevered, serving in virtually every position in dozens of cabinets, some two dozen ministerial posts, defense minister, finance minister, foreign minister three times. Try that, madeleine. [laughter] pres. Obama and now, the 9th president of israel. And i think president clinton would agree with me on this shimon peres is the ultimate comeback kid. [laughter] and hes still going on facebook, on you tube [laughter] pres. Obama connecting with young people; looking to new technologies, always facing tomorrow. Recently, he was asked, what do you want your legacy to be . And shimon replied, well, its too early for me to think about it. [laughter] pres. Obama shimon, you earned your place in history long ago. And i know your work is far from done. But tonight is another example of how its never too early for the rest of us to celebrate your legendary life. Shimon teaches us to never settle for the world as it is. We have a vision for the world as it ought to be, and we have to strive for it. Perhaps shimons spirit comes from what he calls the jewish dissatisfaction gene. [laughter] pres. Obama a good jew, he says, can never be satisfied. There is a constant impulse to question, to do even better. So, too, with nations we must keep challenging ourselves, keep striving for our ideals, for the future that we know is possible. Shimon knows the necessity of strength. As bengurion said, an israel capable of defending herself, which cannot be destroyed, can bring peace nearer. And so hes worked with every american president since john f. Kennedy. Thats why ive worked with Prime Minister netanyahu to ensure that the Security Cooperation between the United States and israel is closer and stronger than it has ever been because the security of the state of israel is nonnegotiable, and the bonds
