Hear from you about. President obama addressed that in his postelection News Conference at the white house this week. A portion of that News Conference. Congress will pass some bills i cannot sign. I am pretty sure i will take some actions that some in congress will not like. That is how our democracy works. But we can surely find ways to Work Together on issues where there is broad agreement among the american people. I look forward to republicans putting forward their governing agenda. I will offer my ideas on areas where i think we can move together to respond to peoples economic needs. We all agree on the need to create more jobs that pay well. Traditionally, both parties have been for creating jobs and rebuilding our infrastructure roads, bridges, ports, waterways. I think we can hone in on a way to pay for it through tax reform that closes loopholes and makes it more attractive to companies to create jobs here in the United States. We can also Work Together to grow our exports and open new markets for our manufacturers, to sell more americanmade goods to the rest of the world. That was the president. What do you think the congress and the white house can agree on in the next two years . On the democrats line, carol calling from upper marlboro, maryland. What do you think . Democrats and republicans can agree on obamacare. I have insurance for the first time. If the republicans choose to repeal it, we will suffer. I hope they can agree on that. From alabama, you are a republican. What can congress and the president agree on . Absolutely nothing, i hope. No sense in trying to, at this point, after all these years of the president , the Democratic Party in particular, being acid they have no interest at all in working with republicans. I am disgusted by all of this. Obamacare, the changing of the rules after kennedy died, and then they had to pass not the continuing resolution, but they had to pass something in order to send the bill to the house. They had to send it back. Pelosi said, you have to pass the bill to see what is in it. Billions and billions of dollars. It would have been cheaper to pay people to go by their own insurance than to do this foolish thing they have done. I am just appalled. I think republicans it is nice to say, Work Together. It is nice to Work Together, but you have to have a framework to Work Together. They have decided what the rules are going to be. They have broken the rules. They say one thing and do another. I think rush limbaugh, this week, nailed it correctly. Work witht there to these guys. You are there to stop them. And then if they want to have debate on, you know, is health care something we should all work towards sure, we can have that debate. But they had no interest when they were in charge. Having republicans, particularly Tea Party Folks i am a proud member of the tea party. Years, i hadfew members calling me, because i was managing a Tea Party Website there were calling and saying, take my name off of their. We do not want to be supported by the tea party. The democrats will hang that around our neck. We have nonpartisan elections here. The democrats have done a great job of lying to the american people, particularly democrats, and poisoning the water, just as they did to sarah palin. Thanks, brad. We are going to move on. Ed is an independent from North Carolina. Do you think the congress and president obama can agree on something over the next couple of years . I hope they can agree on avoiding more future gridlock. Imagine . Obama takes this as a message that this arrogant attitude he had of his way or the highway has to go. What is it that you would like to see congress do and accomplish . With the president signing. Of course, i would like for them to get the Affordable Health act on the books. , or just may work scrap it and start all over again. Something i is not think a majority of the american citizens like. Sorry to cut you off, edward. Thanks for your call. A story in the new york times, headlined tax overhaul is seen after yearspower. Of clashes and a grudging truce, fiscal and Economic Policy was brought back to center stage i the wave of republican electoral victories on tuesday, with president obama and the new congressional leadership expressing hope they could reach deals to simplify the tax code, remote trade, and eliminate the budget deficit. The story continues on thursday. Speaker john boehner, republican of ohio, listed a tax overhaul and the admiral debt as the house toss top two priorities. He also said this week that if the president would move on to take executive action on Immigration Reform, that would poison the well as far as republicans are concerned. A comment from House Speaker john boehner during his postelection News Conference. We will be back with more of your phone calls. If the president moves forward along on immigration, that will have poisoned the well for any type of cooperation between the republican majority and the white house. You have all heard me say, starting two years ago yesterday, that our immigration system is broken and needs to be fixed. That i have made clear to the president that if he acts unilaterally, on his own, outside of his authority, he will poison the well and there will be no chance for Immigration Reform moving in this congress. It is as simple as that. House Speaker John Boehner in his News Conference this week warned the president not to take executive action, something the president has threatened to do if congress does not act quickly. Looking ahead, what can congress and the white house agree on . The phone numbers on your screen. On the line for democrats in webster, new york. What do you think . Immigration is something that the republicans want to look at years ago. Said, theith that borders are not safe. And i get that. We all understand that. Americans understand that. Personally, i am latino. And i understand that across our ,orders there is this hardship and america everybody wants the american dream. I understand that. However, lets do it legally. I am a democrat myself. The president has taken action on behalf of himself that is not a good idea. That is going to cause more chaos, and it is just not right. Mr. Boehner, as we heard it is a on cspan Playing Field that we all have to Work Together on. Now that the republicans have the house, it is time for us to Work Together. And i think it is going to come about to where we are going to part, wherepartisan he is going to say, lets do this, lets do that. Theer thing that infrastructure in our country is really, really bad. We need to get that result as well. That isu think something that congress and the president can come together on the next few years . Here in western new york, where i am located, they just set down a bridge, because it does not they did not shut it down. Only eight tons can go past that bridge. Usually, when tractortrailers go through, that bridge is falling apart. You get your share of snow in winter as well. Exactly. And then what we are treating the snow with his salt. Salt seems to eat away at metal and aluminum, whatever may have you. In pennsylvania, they use sand. Why cant we use the same product . You see, new york state is i do not want to say it is corrupted. Taxes here are really ridiculous. Me as a new yorker, born and raised in new york, in new york city, i have seen it all. Something is wrong. Where is all the money going . That has to do with the governor. Thanks for your call. A couple more calls and we will move on. Eduardo talking about being a latino voter, coming up next. We will take a look at new and the midterm elections. What can the president and congress agree on the next two years . I think the president laid out a plan where there could be some changes to obamacare. And i think congress i think they can get together and work on that a little bit. And, you know, the demographic is that more white males went to the polls and voted this time then maybe in history. A lot of those people stayed home when romney ran last time. This time, they came out. I think the driving force was obamacare. Personally, i am going to be taxed next year or in an Insurance Plan that, you know, we worked a long time to get it, and that is something i would like to see changed. I think they are going to Work Together in that area. Joe on the line. What do you think . Cannotink that if you fix the gridlock, we can maybe get the white house and the congress to agree on fixing the power grid. Of infoanother piece structure that needs to be shored up, especially from a National Security standpoint. Diane is a democrat in irvington, new jersey. What do you think congress and president obama can get done in the next couple of years . Hopefully, they can get a lot done. First of all, it should not be about republicans or democrats. It should be about human beings. Too much powers going on in washington, d. C. , and i think the public suffer for that. I think that people who have strong needs nobody is talking about the fact i work in an industry that, believe it or not, there are a lot of people struggling. Bestay think you have the health policy, but you do not. You cannot meet your deductibles, and that has nothing to do with obamacare. That has to do with the insurance. If people recognize where the fault lies with these insurance companies, you recognize you put yourself in the position of the people. Nobody wants a handout. But people need to be healed. Paying thousands of dollars on your insurance policies per year to get your family help, and you find out at the end of the day you have a 5,000 deductible or a 10,000 deductible, you may as well put your money in your pocket until someone needs the health care. I think, as a democrat, as a human being, the only way to solve the problem is not about red or blue. I am voting for the man who is voting for me or who has my interests at heart. We sit back and say, you know what, what can i live without . What do i need in my life to make it a better world . Because people are hurting. That is my disposition. I think they should focus on that. William on the line for republicans. You get the last word this go around. What do you think the white house and new Republicandominated Congress can accomplish . What can they agree on . Absolutely nothing. It just shows how totally irresponsible and how totally deaf the president is, even though the republicans had taken over the senate. The president continues to say, i will do whatever i want to do. He does not really care. He really does not care about the american public, the american people. He is sending another 1500 soldiers into iraq. Another vietnam. How Many American soldiers will get killed in iraq . Advisers rs or there is video with an american soldier being beheaded. That will cap everything that has happened. More on the elections tomorrow on cspans washington journal. Payton craig hill will be joining us to talk about demographics. Also talk about the concept of divided government, as president obama faces a republican majority in both chambers, come january. The director of the American University center for Congressional Studies will be joining us. Look back at the fall of the berlin wall. We will look for your comments on facebook and twitter. 7 00 a. M. Rts live at eastern, here on cspan. Coming up now, take a look at how latino voters view the midterm elections, based on recent polling from the latino victory project. Middletown the pollsters as well the association of latino elected and appointed officials. Im going to squeeze in here and welcome you to this very important conversation. My name is henry munoz. With eva longoria, im one of the cofounders of the latino victory project. My father, who was an activist, used to tell me that the movement of a people begins with the steps of just one person. This conversation that we are having this morning is really part of the evolution that has been taking place within our community for a very long time. And the people who are on this podium have been people who have devoted their entire lives to the expression of the voice of the Latino Community. So im very honored to be joining each and every one of them this morning and thankful to you who reflect our voice for being here this morning for this conversation. We were happy to partner with frank sharry and his organization to undertake this poll and to convene this meeting. Let me introduce to you frank sharry. [applause] thank you. Good afternoon, and good morning to those on the west coast. And who are watching by live stream and through cspan. And welcome to all of you in the room. We are very excited about todays program. We really want to lift up the voices of latino voters. We do these electioneve polls for a particular reason. The exit polls are good at some things, many things, actually, in terms of talking to all voters about who they voted for and so forth, but they do a notoriously terrible job at capturing subgroups like latinos. And has been long beset by controversy and debate about the methodology used. Im hoping that gary and matt of latino decisions will be able to address that so you understand the reason we do the latino voter election eve polls is so we can really capture their behavior at the polls and their motivations for coming to the polls, and we did something a little unusual this time, we also are going to look at those who decided not to vote, what were some of the motivations and factors involved in that. Before we turn our focus to the behavior of latino voters in the 2014 midterms, i want to make a few comments. Most of us, i think all of us work very hard on Immigration Reform, and there were things that came out of last nights election that was surprisingly good news for us. Number one, again the exit polls are pretty good at talking to all voters, not subgroups, they asked voters where they came down on the question of legal status versus deportation. And contrary to the conventional wisdom that has been a real drop in support over legal status, the results had it nationwide. It was 5739 margin. Showing again strong durable support for legal status. The issue salience of immigration was also tested. It does appear republicans listed Immigration Reform as a top issue more than other voters. It does seem to us that it reveals a dynamic we are familiar with in the world of immigrant Immigration Reform and immigrant advocacy, which is that Immigration Reform with legal status is a winner with the public. And yet there is a strong, loud, but not particularly large base in the Republican Party that is yhrough relatively virulentl opposed to it. So when you see candidates demagoguing the issue of immigration in the campaign as we saw in a number of races year, we see it as their base part of their base turnout strategy not a strategy devoted at swing voters. Swing voters like most democrats are in favor of legal status. A dynamic we think worth lifting up. Also we just want to highlight , that New Hampshire senators race, you have one of the least diverse states in the country. You have senator jean shaheen who leaned into the issue of Immigration Reform. Supported comprehensive Immigration Reform. Up against a formidable campaigner in scott brown, who made Border Security and fear mongering around isis and ebola a staple of his effort, and she was rewarded with a victory despite those efforts of people like the groups like the antiimmigrant groups, and folks like laura ingram and Jeff Sessions really made that the top race that they were focused on. Really wanted a scott brown victory. It didnt happen. What we are going to plum is, how about the democrats . They seem to be awfully cautious when it came to issues of Immigration Reform this year. And we would suggest, i think well have data to show, that didnt work out well for them. Without further ado let me tell you who is on the stage and introduce our key presenters from latino decisions. On the dais here with me, starting from my left and your right, we have laura maristany. She is the director of policy and legislative affairs for and educational fund. We have ben monterroso. He is the executive director of mi familia vota. We have janet margula. The ceo of the National Council of la raza. We have randy borntrager, people for the american way. And we have yanira merino, the Immigration Campaign director for the aflcio. And a proud guanaca. Without further ado let me turn it over to gary segura and matt barreto, the cofounders of latino decisions. First of all let me say to the polling partners, thank you for the opportunity to do this work. Particularly to janet and henry and frank and your organizations for taking the lead and for the polling partners who are participating in the study. We think this is an important way to make sure that theres a clear database record of what latino voters felt in the election. Its something we have been doing for several cycles. On behalf of my partners, coprincipal, sylvia, and analysts, we are very happy to be here. Lets get to it. We are going to start by talking about the election eve poll and methodology. The election eve poll was conducted in 10 states plus a National Side sample so we could have a weighted view of the entire countr
