And globally we think there is a really great big opportunity to do that. What is the Technology Behind that . Its not just starry thats doing this but really the next frontier in wireless communication is this. You are look at 10, 15 times the frequency of cellular operations and the big advantage is it gives you a tremendous amount of bandwidth, you can pump many times more data. One of the first uses of that that makes sense is in wireless broadband. Were looking at what are the opportunities in using it. These things have other limitations as well. For example, they dont go as far as other signals do. They dont penetrate buildings. A difficulty of operating at these frequencies but if you can figure out the way around those things, its a lot of fun. Have you figured out a way around that . We think so, yeah. Ok. Can you give us just a thumbnail of what the technology does or what you put in there . The bake idea is that weve built whats known as an tive active phaser, historically its been used to send very High Frequency signals over long distances and back. Were basically using 9 same strategy for communication technology, which is very novel and knew. As you go up in frequency, how do you deliver power in the airwaves . It becomes a really expensive and interesting challenge. The Radar Systems have been involved in it for a long time. We got our inspiration from Radar Systems and applied it to communications. So thats one. The second is cta mechanics, particularly in wifi, its a really exciting innovation in wireless. Weve aadopted and created a system that allows them to overcome the technological difficulties. Wifi is almost an Old Technology today, isnt it . Its so advanced that a lot of the innovations that have happened, now the new standard to be worked on, 11 af, sts its by the far the best, he beauty of it is that it brings consumer grade technologies. Its incredible that you can 10 five or 15 dollars a radio that takes millions of dollars to develop. The next generations in wifi and 5g, theyre all coming together for really a common aprompe to sophisticated ways to deliver which fie. When do you see 5g being a norm . Well, 5g is an interesting feat because the whole idea of very low license but distributed in industrial mindset, on the other hand its got this notion of High Frequency devices and the larger waves drisken by the lower end. The interesting thing is to see that the standards are being developed by maybe 2020 did, 2020 and after that maybe silicon development. So its really not that par far away. L. T. E. Cameras, a laser scanner and essentially were building a threedimensional mod ill of everything thats going on around the car. Were showing our vehicle this has the cameras and layser sensors added to it. What the data comes in and what we can show is how that data would appear in the brain of the system. Were actual hi building a full threedimensional model of what the cars can see. Coupling that are with laser information and camera information, we can now use Artificial Intelligence to identify what the car is sensing. We would never display that to the driver but this is what were using to sense everything thats going on around the car. F we back up one slide, we can see all the different types of objects dunk objects it did it can see. And all this massive amount of information, that is usually really overwhelming to a driver but we can do that 360 degrees around the car and understand where the car can drive. Now, this last thing here is kind of showing essentially how it would appear to the driver. Heres the windshield at the top and in the instrument cluster we can show whats coming up behind our car before it even enters our field of view. This is the rear view . No, this is the front view. This is actually your instrument cluster. As you are driving you can see cars coming up in your blind spot before they even pass you here. So this is also giving you the confidence that the selfdriving car gives you. And also it indicates the path you are going to drive. We have heard about googles selfdrive driving cars and other companies. How is this Technology Different . Were working with over 80 different car companies. Here one marv manufacturer is an internet company. T use are our program were not developing the cars. Were developing the brain going into all of them. Now, this box here, what is contained in here . A lot of Processing Power in this system. This is a super computer. If we were to go back this time this level to do of performance would require a massive super computer that would fill up this entire room. This system is designed for an automotive application. You can notice the inputs for cameras, radar, all the sensors that you have on your car all yum come in here, pre reprocess that information and basically build a map of what the car sees. So is this an aftermarket product that anyone can add to their car . Were developing this clear closely with automakers. There will be regulation needed to make ensure that its safe. So were developing it in conjunction with automakers but we want to have government input to ensure unarmority not only state by state but at the federal level. People love it. The reality is there are so many People Killed or injured in traffic accidents every dear. Year. This technology has the ability to dramatically reduce the number of accidents. Ive been working with automakers for over a decade. Our technology is actual hi used to design considers, ngineers engineer the cars, nvidia creates simulators to figure out how safe are the cars in virtual crash tests and our technology is also used for virtual show rooms, even virtual reality. Now were tarking all that graphics and computer power and brought it into the car. And your role, are you the c. E. O. And founder . No. My title is senior director of the automotive business unit. Were actually a small part of nvidia but its the Fastest Growing part. We have over 10 million cars on the road today with our technology inside. These are in awedies, b. M. W. s, hondas and this is the next wave, to really enable the selfdriving technology and it dramatically makes the systems on the road a lot better. Weve been talking with mr. We solve that by keeping iting in the pocket but allowing it to be updated as the everchanging needs happen. Another feature we have is personal qualifications system. A lot of the navy base training is peertopeer. So i might have a qualification that you need, you might have a qualification that i need and in order for us to both get qualified, we train each other. In the navy today they carry around these big threeinch bodiners binders with hundreds of sheets of paper and thousands of signatures and thats how they get qualified. There is no other way to track it other than i hand you this binder and you hand it back to me. We do it digitally so we can track in real time and make sure that an on naval ships or marines or where have you, people are qualified to be in the places they need to be. So glrn where did the idea come from . Our three founders are all former naval officers who met at the naval academy. They saw this need as they served on naval ships. I came out in september. Im a marine corps enlisted guy and i obviously saw the same need in the marine corps and and thought yeah, this is a nobrainer good idea, im going to sign up and help out. So im really excited about if the displays that have to do with home that tells you your heating and keeping your sprinkling system and all to be controlled by your cell phone. That display was amazing to me. As a matter of fact. Im just so excited i cant wait to get back to my local best buy store so i can go invest some more of my money in improvements. So you are down here more on a personal level than a congressional sflelf im here as a consumer. Were all consumers first and foremost. Were members of Congress Second arly. Secondarily. Ut im exciteds as a member of congress in the advancements in telecommunications technology, the smart phones and allied instruments. They really are making the american peoples minds a lot lives a lot simpler and asier. Now, ill tell you one thing that amazed me. When you look at the light, when you have the app and you can change the color of the light by mbing your finger around, it reminds me of disco. Im old school. You know i had a loot of if lot of fun playing with that device. But its amazing. Consumer at the Electronics Group brought this to the hill. We dont have a chance to visit, actually have our hands on kind of interaxe with it. So bringing it out here so we can actually play with the toys and touch the instruments and utilize this and imagine how it can fit into our lives, thats what good about this. You said you are a consumer first and a congressman second. When you look at some of this technology through a congressional eye, is there anything you think congress can do to support the technology and the advantage of technology as opposed to maybe regular late it . I dont have any right now. I do believe we need another real you know, we havent had a Technology Bill since 1996. You know . And its about time. You can imagine what the world was like in 1996. There was the Telecommunications Act of 1996 did, 1993. These things were a figurement of somebodys imagine nation back then. We need to catch up with some of the new innovations so week in terms not to of controlling things but to make sure the ground is a level Playing Field and make sure were able to, with our enemies, american enemies, that and ave to best to keep regulation as way from them and looking at this whole technological advancement, looking at that time from a different perspective. In the congress, i was on the committee that wrote the 1996 Communications Act and i know its old and obstacle oleet. So we obsolete. So we really need to brick bring it up to day. So i would say were trying to help, for example, in this example were frying to help bring together licensed products that creators can make that can be tied back for licensing purposes. Licensing and challenging were looking to make it scaleable, so they can monetize poth on the marketing side and the creative side. So this is whoever created this, this would be their intellectual property, right . They know they have an actual license so to now sell this. Instead of worrying about somebody taking it down and trying to get it back. We do that. We help make it easier for them so creators can focus on making products and the market place can focus on selling without having to deal with the headache of all the hard stuff. And what does that mean . Its a cox of combination of image and text shall texting the it will return a series of data points back and say this has a perpetual license, you have to apply for a license, or it doesnt have a license. It allows feedback and information so that the creative marketplace knows what they can or cant do with that particular object. .
