CSPAN Washington Journal James Antle Discusses President Trumps Week Ahead May 30, 2017

Taking the viewpoint that essentially the United States would have a lot of burden while a lot of polluting countries ke china would not be as affected by the regulations. So the president has a team thats been very divided on this question. He has some people within his administration that want to pull out. Some people within his administration that want to renegotiate the deal. And then some people who think that he should maintain the status quo and stay in the deal. Host and how is this being seen . Its being looked at through the prism of a statement on u. S. Leadership and Global Affairs . Guest yeah. I think a lot of people will perceive this if we pull out of the Paris Agreement as an advocation of u. S. Leadership on environmental issues. It will be a part of a series of issues of which the United States is taking a different stand than its conventional allies in europe. Some people will see this through the prism of President Trump going it alone. The National Security advisor said America First doesnt mean america only, america alone. Some of the germany, france, some of these countries will show this through the prism of the United States sort of doing things unilaterally. Host we saw the german chancellor saying that europe is going to have to depend more on themselves and less on the United States. Only amping that up ahead of this expected decision this week. Guest thats right. So much that was for german domestic political consumption. Host because she has an election coming up . Guest right. And germany and france are certainly wanting to take larger eadership roles within europe. And the president was very critical of nato during his trip last week, really emphasizing and hitting home the idea that there needs to be greater burden on defense spending. And so you do have this sort of sub text of is President Trump not really on board with a lot of our longstanding european allies while he is seems to be trying to ingratiate himself a bit to saudi arabia and to some somewhat more controversial allies that we ave. Host and on troop levels in afghanistan. What is the timing we have on that . Is that something that could come this week . Guest it is something that could come this week. Its been something thats been discussed for the past several weeks. The president is sort of at a crossroads. The United States is at a crossroads. Weve been in afghanistan for 16 years. Are we reach the point of diminishing returns . Yet that is has been a war of which theres been a more political consensus than ever existed with regard to iraq. So there is a desire by both parties to maintain some kind of commitment to afghanistan and to see whether he can achieve any further objectives in terms of stabilizing that country. But weve been there for a very long time and the president sort of campaigned on the idea that nation building was bad. So if we end up having somewhat more of a surge, an increase in troop levels, itll be an interesting dynamic and not one that some of his core voters were necessarily looking for. Host from Foreign Affairs to the president s own house, a look ahead this week of potential staff shakeups at the white house. Definitely something hes being watched and reported. Today the president S Communications director is leaving the white house a start of what he says. And a start of a wave of changes as they cope with scandals and agenda. What does this mean for the white house if guest the has always been given lower grades in communication than hes been given for the agenda of his administration. This is an area where even the president has admitted there are some problems. I happen to think it would be difficult to do communications for such an unconventional president. It will be difficult no matter who you have on your team and theres a lot of speculation that maybe sean spicer if not out, would do fewer oncamera press briefings. Maybe there would be fewer oncamera press briefings in general and the president would increase his own press conference availability and they would do written statements within the interim. Host is that still the expectation . Because the daily guidance from yesterday, sean spicer still getting a press release. Guest that has been the thing about white house shakeups in general. They keep getting leak out that theyre going to happen. And then really nothing happens. But i do think theyre going to have to do Something Different in terms of their Communications Strategy as this russia probe expands and becomes more serious. And theyre going to have to have a better and more fine communication strategy in dealing with that. And the news on that front is host Robert Mueller who is going to be leading that communication staffing up his russia probe. A report from the wall street journal noting hes bringing over two of those folks that hes been working with in his current job at a law firm. The team has been assigned office space and a nonscript building in washington, home to the Justice Department, civil rights and requirement and Natural Resources divisions. Their job is to come up with a budget and start that investigation process. But certainly, something thats going to take a very long time. Guest it is. At one point, they didnt have a press contact. They depart have any staff. Nobody working at it. But you really have to ramp tease things up quickly. As opposed to the independent counsel that investigated some of president clintons scandal, this is within the jurisdiction of the Justice Department. It will depend on the Justice Department for its budget and funding. But it is expected that robert mural will be unimpeded in terms of getting the resources that he needs. Host some of the issues that the white house is returning with this week. Were talking with jim antle of the washington examiner. Hes here to take your questions and comments. Democrats, 2027488000. Republicans, 2027488001. And independents, 2027488002. And we havent even got on the American Health care act yet. Lets bring in karen who is waiting in lake view, oregon, line for republicans before we pick that up. Go ahead, karen. Caller yeah. I just want to make a comment. I read a memoir by john johnson. He was a Depp Cravaack governor. In his memoir, he said that if the conservationist ever gained control of the country, they would be dangerous. A long time ago, they were concerned about conservationist. Thats one reason why we are even discussing this Global Warming thing. Also when you look at obamacare and the Global Warming, its the way to take money from americans that they would otherwise not want to have money taken out of their pockets to put towards something. Government is forcing us to spend money that we do not want, products that we do not want. I believe a lot of it has to do with who has the money invested in Global Warming companies . If you have your money when you are of course you would like to make everybody buy it because guess what, you put must be in your own pocket. There were two or three studies, falsified when it comes to the Global Warming temperatures while if something is really happening, you dont need to falsify studies. It is what it is. Host that is karen this morning. Jim antle, what did ping from there . Guest well there is the interesting do i nascar that you have these energy are dependent on government subsidies. Democrats have been a real big boosters from these companies. President trump campaigned heavily on protecting coal, protecting a lot of industries that would potentially be adversely affected by environmental regulations his desire to grow jobs in some of those jobs that are dependent on those industries is a big part of his environmental agenda. He really won the presidency in part because he was able to win a lot of these voters who dont necessarily see things like the Paris Agreement as being in their economic interest. Host and the caller also brought up the Affordable Care act. We saw the role that president played in the house debate in the house vote. How do you think that changes as this moves to the senate . What will be his role when it comes to the senders and trying to win the vote for this if guest the difficulty in the senate is an individual senator is not swayed or impressed by we will leave the conversation. Educators and historians examine the brown v. Board of education decision ending segregation in public schools. This is the 63rd anniversary. This is also by the Thurgood Marshall fund and is just getting underway. Welcome to our headquarters. We share this building with gallup with the work we will
