Than you can summarize in a few sentences, which is what we have to do an answer a question on washington journal. I want to address latest development with Brittney Griner. Our hearts are with Brittney Griner, her wife and her family, friends and teammates in light of the appalling news out of russia. This news increases the urgency of our efforts to bring brittany home. The Biden Administration remains in touch with representatives from britneys family and asked National Security adviser Jake Sullivan said this morning, the immigration has continued to engage russia through multiple channels in recent weeks to urge them to respond to our efforts to negotiate a resolution to this. We will also continue to support and advocate for other americans detained in russia, including paul whelan. Russia needs to negotiate in good faith. As jake has said this morning and as you have heard me say, the president has stated that he is willing to go to extraordinary lengths and make chuffed tough decisions to bring americans home. This administration has done it successfully before and it will keep working to do it again and bring brittany home. Earlier today, the president paid tribute to former secretary of defense asked carter. Ash carter. The president recalled his quote an obligation to the women and men of the greatest fighting force in the history of the world. The president spoke about his integrity and honesty and his historic achievements in behalf of Service Members and his commitment to nations veterans in a life dedicated to Public Service and we lost a great american. As the president and first lady grief of the carter family. You heard from the president about our ongoing fight against covid and the important portents of getting your vaccine card updated. The vaccines are designed to fight against the covid we have today and we have the best protection. If you do take this vaccine ahead of the winter and mr. President said, for most of us, you are going to get this protection once a year like we do with the flu shot. With that in mind, we have here today, the white house Covid Response coronation dr. Shah coordinator dr. Jha. The floor is yours. It is good to be back with all of you and you heard from the president so i will be brief and i look forward to your questions. Let me start by underscoring the simple message. We note that winter is a time where viruses spread easy and we are seeing a rise of other seasonal viruses like blue f lu. And we know covid is evolving and we are seeing new subvariants and increases in hospitalizations and cases in europe so there are challenges. The great news here is that unlike past winters, we are in control. We have the tools we need to make sure folks are having a safe season and the single most important tool is the updated covid19 vaccine so let me take a minute to summarize. The updated vaccines were decide against the ba. 5 variant. That is the dominant variant in the u. S. And even some of the other subvariants that are concerning our derivative from ba. 5. This new vaccine should provide the best protection possible against sickness and serious illness. Let me be clear. For a lot of americans, it should be an annual shot. When the president came into office, he made a commitment that we have followed through on. That he made a commitment that the vaccines remain widely available and easily accessible and they remain free. Over 20 million americans have got it thats in there updated vaccines, including one in five seniors. That is not enough. Mr. President said, we need more poster step up more folks to step up. This week, we have launched new national and local tv ads and radio ads. We are launching social and digital ads. We are focusing on reaching a broad set of committees like black and latino and aapi communities. We are putting a special emphasis on reaching seniors. We have known from the beginning of the pandemic and no doubt that seniors are the ones at the highest risk. They are the ones who benefit most from these updated vaccines. We are reaching out to folks doctors and meeting folks where they are with information and setting up locations where people are. Nursing homes, Community Health centers and even the nascar cup serious cup series championship in arizona. Medicare is leveraging what he has to meet seniors and local pharmacies arm mobilizing are look are mobilizing. Pharmacies are the places where a large proportion of americans are getting their vaccines and the president said we need everyone, Community Organizations and state and local leaders, state leaders. We need everyone to step up. This is about staying being saving lives of tens of thousands of americans. We know we can do this because we have the tools and we have the knowhow. If we use these tools, this winter can look very different than last winter or the winter before. Thank you for letting me spend time with you and i look forward to questions. [indiscernible] use said we will enter the winter mode does that come to for ration . Fruition . We mentioned there were two areas where we were not going to have the stock put we went to have any into the winter. When Congress Fails to do its job, we have to make difficult choices and we made the choice we want to make sure people we had enough vaccines for americans. That meant that remain sued today. Two today and the last point i will make is in my mind, it is unacceptable that congress is forcing us to make these choices for the American People. They deserve a Covid Response that doesnt trade off between ppe on one hand and treatments and vaccine on the other. They deserve a response that allows us to have all of those things and that is not where congress has landed. The president talked about how vaccines were not able to protect them and earlier in the to try to protect the immunocompromised and he said, if you are in that category, talk to your physician. Has there been a shift in how people who have special requirements medically should be viewed . It is is it a collective responsibility to protect them when we were doing masking or is it on the person who has those vulnerabilities . Dr. Jha we care about all americans and protect we the most vulnerable americans and it is a collective response ability to care about the amino amino compromise. Immunocompromised. These are people who have transplants. These are our neighbors. These are fellow americans. What the president was highlighting is that with some of the new subvariants that are emerging, some of the main tools we have had to protect the amino amino proper rise amino compromise may not work immuno compromised may not work. It has been difficult to place our medicine cabinet. We have hoped over time, as the pandemic went along, that we would expand our medicine cabinet because of lack of funding and that medicine cabinet has shrunk and that does put Vulnerable People at risk. There are parents who have children going through long covid around the country and a lot of parents are finding that there doctors dont know much about long covid. There are only about a dozen clinics around the country specializing in long covid. What are you doing to educate doctors so parents have treatment . Dr. Jha long covid is a problem we recognize early. I will talk in broad terms and they get specific. Then get specific. What are we doing on long covid and what is our Research Agenda and those reports came out in august and we have continued to work to think about how we use everything from disability possibilities to medicare and medicaid to make sure we are treating people with long covid and support people. Not just running the it is a multifaceted approach building cohorts, and trying to develop treatments. There is a lot of work happening inside the federal government because this is important and the problem is that the medical community is learning about long covid but it is not a single disease. As probably multiple Different Things that manifests itself. We have to get more information to doctors and we had a gathering with president s of all the Major Medical designs use when we talk about key things and long covid was one of those things. There is a set of ever happening on physician education but also on generating evidence and science to figure out how we do a better job to care for people. What about the clinics there is funding for research and we have requested more funding for long covid work and that will be something to congress is that about to step up on. The other sort of pairs are paying for there is a lot of policy stuff. We had to make sure we identify people. There is a lot a policy work being done to make sure that we are taking care and identify people with long covid and identify the them. 4 billion of that is for international can you explain why the american taxpayers should want to spend 4 billion of their money to accelerate spots overseas and why it matters for the health of americans . Dr. Jha global outbreak. You heard from the president , Global Health emergency. It needs a Global Response and that has been are putting in the u. S. , the u. S. Has gotten more vaccines out than any other country in the world. The problem at this point is not vaccine supply. It is about getting shots in arms. Every single major variant that has hit the United States has originated outside the United States so the notion that we can somehow wall ourselves off and not be affected is naive. That is not how it works so even if you think about it from a narrow selfinterest, it is important that we get much of the world vaccinated and we go the Vaccination Program but beyond selfinterest, america is engaged in the world and the president has restored National Leadership on Global Health that is different from the previous president. It is important for america to lead and 4 billion is a small investment for america to protect the world. President biden was talking about how not to let people are getting boosted but you said that there are not any internal or external goals or no targets. What does it mean when he says not enough people getting boosted and can you give us a picture on is there any part of the country that are struggling to boost people more than others and why . Dr. Jha we dont have internal targets. The president met that he wants to get more people getting the Covid Vaccine. We think it is better for more americans to get vaccinated. When we look across the country, we see lots of variation across the country on vaccination rates as you can go to the cdc website and see that. Our job we need to work on improving vaccination numbers. We think there is good access everywhere. And percent of americas live within five miles of a place with vaccines. About 70,000 sites have vaccination so access from a physical location point of view is good everywhere. There are rule areas rural areas that we need to do work in but we need to work on improving vaccinations everywhere. You have an estimate on when the government will run out of paxlovid . Dr. Jha about 8 million doses have gone out to pharmacies and 5. 5 billion have been million have been administers. Administered. We will have plenty of paxlovid this fall and winter. We are confident we wont run out. As we saw today, President Biden took another shot of the Covid Vaccine and we have seen focused on the fight against covid. We have seen how the United States african countries ended and it has come to my attention this country has saved many people 5 billion to get modern vaccines but not a single dose of the vaccine has been sent to the country. As we are talking about covid and we have seen how the United States has been very fighting about the covid, is there any update on when the vaccine will be sent or if the president is aware if about the vaccines like 19. 5 million of Moderna Vaccine they were never sent to this country. Dr. Jha i dont have specific updates. We have continued to make Vaccines Available for free for basically every low and middle income countries. There are 100 countries eligible to get through copings vaccines. They are available for donations but i dont know the specifics. I will ask you for your impression of that naep report. What was your take away from it and what to the Public Health communities learn . Dr. Jha there were learning losses because based on all the data, because of the fact that we didnt have an Person Education and with the president took over as president in 2021, less than half of schools were open in fulltime educations and within bus months, what the 90 night more than 99 of schools were open and a and Person Education. In person fulltime education is the best form of education and the administration has been committed to it. We did a series of things to make that happen, privatizing teachers getting vaccinated. The major lesson out of that is that you can do it with the right tools. You have leadership and that is what the president has demonstrated. Those learning losses are important and we need to make kids catch up. Learning losses were lack of because of lack of in Person Education. We have to work on afterschool and summer schools in all things education experts have been saying. Do you think the Public Health community has learned how it might fis the country Going Forward about this issue . Advise the country Going Forward about this issue . Dr. Jha i was arguing that we need to get kids back in school. Many for us in the Public Health community were arguing for an in Person Education as safe and doable. Many of us believed that it was important for kids to have that and advocated for that. I was advocated advocating as an academic expert with president was cleared about it clear about it. How we time was approximately the time which you get vaccinated for halloween parties and thanksgiving. The fullcourt press is coming on now and is it too late and should you have done it sooner . Is halloween the time you should have been vaccinated and only 20 are . Dr. Jha i mentioned that day because many families are and mine are getting together for thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is 34 weeks later but the bottom line is, if you miss the halloween deadline, november is a good idea. We have been pushing and getting the word out and doing a lot within the last month so it is not likely waited until now. Today was the day the president got vaccinated based on his schedule. It was three months after this his infection. The president seemed to express some level frustration may not be the right word but his remarks seem to maybe exasperation is the right word out about when it comes to people one to get vaccination. He said, yeah, i am having to talk about it again. Is there a sense of exasperation about where things stand about getting people to well up their sleeves roll up their sleeves . Dr. Jha what the president said is that it is not a public political issue. It is a Public Health issue. We want to protect american lives and what we know based on the best Public Health science is that covid we will prevent more deaths over the next 36 months that by doing Everything Else and what you heard from the president is a clear statement that we are focused on because that is the right Public Health response. We want to help people, particularly seniors. You mentioned the rights that we you are seeing in pediatric respiratory help and assist. 75 of hospital says there beds are filled. How concerned are you about limited capacity and how what you saw or covid . Dr. Jha we are seeing the rise of three respiratory viruses and all of them going up around the same time so the big picture is for two of the three, we have vaccines that are highly effective. The first thing i would recommend to parents is getting kids vaccinated because if you can get them vaccinated against flu and covid, that takes two of the three issues off the table and has more capacity in the health care system. Rsv is a virus that has been around forever and it about 90 of kids will get rsv once by the time they are two. Standard patterns have been disrupted so we are seeing a lot of it at once. My recommendation is for most kids, rsv is mild and my recommendation is standard. Avoid contact and keep them at home to prevent spreading. Unlike covid, which is airborne, which with rsv, it is Service Transmission surface transmission. Basic respiratory precaution. It goes a long way and
