Now retired, in charge of the Largest Global Logistics Command in the army comprised of 59,000 military and civilians located in all 50 states and more than 140 countries. She managed a budget of 60 billion. Responsible for oversight of approximately 70 billion service contracts. Army chief of staff called her quite simply the best light station the army has ever had. Passed on some of the strategy she used to earn this praising her new book. Walter isaacson has said that her book shows that the generals commitment to and zeal for service have not ended with her military retirement. Retired army general mcchrystal calls the book and inspirational guide book for anyone trying to make their team or organization that. Please welcome ann dunwoody. [applause] every variety of expression. I will be at most of it. The less impressive building is the pentagon. Thank you for that kind introduction. If my mom if my mom was here she would have believed every word of it. My brothers and sisters on the other hand would be wondering who the heck you are talking about. I appreciate the opportunity to be here to introduce my new book a higher standard. Over two years in the making 40 years of living. Im curious how many of you have written the book . How many of you are thinking of writing a book . These words are for you. For the ones that have completed a book congratulations because i now know how hard that is. For those thinking about it, you may want to speak to those who have. Quite frankly, i never thought it would write a book. When i was selected writing a book, seem to be a foregone conclusion. I had a unique vantage. And great story to tell. Writing a book is no cakewalk no easy task. Task. It takes serious commitment personal investment of time, heart, and soul. Without that investment you may have a book just the book. It might have your name on it, but it will be yours. I was approached by a successful writer from los angeles who was enthusiastic about telling my story helping me read the book. And have and have helped one of my friends read his biography and more. When we talked to were so enthusiastic and excited about helping me tell my story. As he described it adrs hundred hours of interview and he would take those that would be our source document from there he would create chapters. Was the proposals completed we do the editing and send it out to prospective literary agents select an agent and ultimately maybe i should say hopefully so the book publisher. Well after that he said running the book could be relatively easy. I really did not want to write a book. If you want to guess how the story ends. Well, the 1st draft and outline comes in. A proposal of a version of my life seen through someone elses life to have someone elses eyes and voice and i barely recognize myself. We tried again different approach same result. And so the pages turning, deadlines approached, and we never thought any closer. My husband and i finally decided that there would. We set out on our own personal journey to produce this book one in our own words recounting our own experiences and drying our. But i did not want to write a memoir per se is this book is about. The story i wanted to share was about leadership. Today i want to talk about my journey and share some of the few strategies i believe contributed in some measure to my success and spirit organizational change and improvement. I want to share his experiences obviously truncated from the book that helped to five business. In the book i tried lessons that were not only fundamental to my success has the broadest applications to larger organizations, large, small, battlefields, board rooms lessons for leaders who never wanted to start learning. I tried to capture what i learned, how i learned it from and how these things make me a better leader. Now,. No, this is not a book how to become a general. I am sure i could read the novel is it a book on the ten steps to being a good leader. I didnt think there is any magic recipe for leadership. If there were followed by the recipe command. When i tried to do is share the strategy supported by stories of my life that worked for me with hopes that others might find them useful in their lives and careers. It is based on things i learned as a child have done with soldier businessperson and later. My hope is that my remarks in this book will challenge people to dream big and find ways to make a difference as part of obstacles imperfect bosses or traditions of the things is. Now, i chose a higher standard as a total because those than 1 percent of American Population all caps i think most citizens do not realize that men and women in uniform are held to a higher standard. We taken a to support and defend the constitution. Were home to a strict code of conduct governs behavior in and out of uniform. That is a we have to meet standards and just about everything we do ranging anywhere from adherence to stringent codes of ethics the uniform code of military justice respect for authority and the chain of command to how fast you run for subsequent do and how many times you can hit a target. Most importantly the reason i chose a higher standard because good leaders that i serve health so still higher standard. When i joined the iso to prove myself and exceed the standard to be accepted and stroke it is. What i realized is that all the good leaders i serve themselves to a higher standard and consistently applied Leadership Principles meant to improve not the great debates. In the army we collect the front. In the book i spent time talking about the difference between leaders and soldiers met the standards and others who tried to exceed the standards. It is kind of like the difference between being between being an a a student investing in a student and a c student. Except for except for the army lives depend upon our performance and leadership. Leader who is satisfied with meeting the standard never striving to a higher standard will probably never leave a highperforming organization. When i joined the army i joined the army for. The time i was in Elementary School that i would be a coach and physical education teacher. As a kid was a tomboy. I love sports and went to one of the top physical education colleges in the country enough to. During my junior year in college the army offered 25,500 a month during their senior year. 500 was a lot of money for. Even with four generations of with pointers and my family for joining the army had never crossed my mind. But it was an offer i cannot refuse so i joined and began my twoyear journey a journey that turned into five years ten years, 20 years and yes 30 years. So when people ask me if i always be a general i tell them in my wildest dreams. When it happened there was no more surprised that i except my husband. Now you know why they say behind every successful there is an astonished man. In 2,008 president of the United States nominated me for my fourstar i was not prepared for the enormity of the. It was the 1st been blessed with a lot of force. Being nominated is a different kind of 1st command i did not appreciate the significance of promotion until the tidal wave of cards and letters and emails. I heard moms and dads who sold his saw this promotion as a beacon of hope for there dollars from an affirmation that in america anything is possible with hard work and commitment. What was nominated i heard from Women Veterans committee is just wanted to say congratulations some just wanted to say thank you still others just wanted to say how happy to this day has finally arrived. It was a humbling experience is italys. The promotion ceremony finally happened i said i might be the 1st is certainly will last. Today i am happy to report there are three other female fourstar officers with you making. This is not just about promotions. What is really exciting is women are flying jet fighters in combat recommending shift in the navy and the 1st group of highly qualified women are starting range as you will see in my coma the journey begins with an introduction by several Sheryl Sandberg author of the National Bestseller and a true champion of womens equality. You might think that we sound a bit like to people from entirely different roles. The reality is that we had more things the principal among those things that we have was the desire to make a difference in the lives of people command i am glad to call my friend and kindred spirit. She is championed several National Campaigns from getting to achieve greater positions in the workplace and getting them to recognize and support these talented women that have been in support of both campaigns. I have been fortunate to have such a supportive husband who is a hero in his own right. He has been a spin much. I can assure you, it is easier to you when you have someone to lean on. On my toughest days husband was right there kind of like a coach on the corner of boxing ring. He would pick me up, dust me off and say go give them hell. When craigs mother finished reading the book she told greg i get the impression that she likes you. Now, the number one question i get is why you know where you 1st female to achieve the rank of fourstar general. The 2nd question is how do you succeed in this maledominated profession . How did you manage to call your way to the top . And then try to answer these questions and i think most would be surprised by the answers. My journey to the top is far more interesting. It would have been easy and probably expected by some that i would write a book on how i, like wonder woman climbs to the top, shattered glass ceilings, gamblers the reality is my journey was more leadership and gender. Not just leadership in the army not just for women but for people. I did not just skip along the yellow brick road in the land of oz and find myself at the end of the rainbow is a fourstar general. There are bumps in the road obstacles that people all will wanted to. Many of these. But these bumps, obstacles and people to help can be found in all and in flash. Like many of you may skills came from my Family Education and fitness. When i say fitness and Mental Fitness physical fitness emotional fitness spiritual fitness. These form the foundation for me to achieve things i never thought possible. I came from a values based family can have the best mom and. In fact based on what i like. My dad proud soldier father, patriot who served his country for 31 years and fought three wars. He just celebrated his 96th birthday. Mom is an unsung hero the family. She raised six kids are well that serve the country. A devout catholic the most selfless, gracious caring person will ever know. She told me the glass would always be halffull, never halfempty. No matter what the forecast she said if you bring on a great. My participation in sports was character building to say the least. I competed in tennis and gymnastics in college and learned as learn as much from losing as i did from morning and learn the Team Performance was far more important than individual performance and performing and productive in front of large crowds can be scary and it is. In sports taught me priceless lessons and have to turn surprises into experiences and challenges of activities. My education . The intellectual skills to be technically competent. A bachelors degree and two masters degree polish and my creative and Strategic Thinking skills. Family, fitness and education the cornerstones of who i am. In in the book i tried to be as honest and candid about the challenges i faced as well as the opportunities i was given. I tried to put a human face on leadership. I remember back in the 80s i think 1984 i was stationed in germany and had just been selected to command attachment. A young captain and this was my dream job. Since the primary function was to pack parachutes and regulars of supplies and equipment for paragraph one of the requirements of the commander was to be certified jump master. Jump master is the person responsible to check equipment, parachutes command make sure there are no malfunctions. At the time i only had 12 jumps and i am not sure if there are any female jump masters in the army at that time or not. My boss said youre the best qualified. Well, as it turned out the only place to go to Jump Master School in your was with special forces in germany. I received my orders and was excited. A beautiful town in southern germany. The munich surrounded by the mountains command i wanted it to go to Jump Master School. Used to be the fortress built in the world war ii timeframe the Training Center for hitlers ss officer corps of the most trusted and ruthless. In 1984 the american headquarters for the 1st Battalion Special forces group. I showed up on a sunday afternoon ready for training on a monday morning and reported in handed my orders to the duty officer. He looked at me my orders back at me then handed me a key and pointedly down the hallway and never said a word. I went to find my room. I found it opened the door. A young paratrooper. Now, he looked at me i looked at him. He looked back at each other and stunned. In those days it was not go with. Next back down to the office several sergeants and anxious conversation. They said without your orders certain type. We were expecting in the. No one was smiling or laughing. It was like what are we going to do . Welcome as you can imagine there were many times like that but i got my own room attended the training and than happy to report i graduated from the course. In my car talk about my 1st platoon Sergeant Tommy a lot of things. One of the most enduring things he told me was never want to stick. He said if you walk by a mistake you just set a new standard. Mistake can be something as simple as picking up his paperwork trash off of the ground instead of just walking by it or it could be something serious is failing to properly clean and maintain, the. In the army failing to enforce standards can be a slippery slope. It leads to poor performance and people getting hurt. Same principle in civilian life. If the people of General Motors had turned the other way when they discovered effective ignition switches they may have saved billions of dollars and possibly the lives of those whose crashes were caused by the faulty conditions. If the Veterans Administration employees and leadership had highlighted the patient backlog versus trying to cover it up there may have been able to help more veterans delay or prevent the. Walking my mistake is this a couple of hard to do it takes courage, resolved and consistency. Those who doggedly refused to walk by a mistake sometimes thought to be or inflexible, but the principle can help everyone. If something is doing, it is worth doing right. As i is that big. Can come true with hard work and commitment. You can be . Questionmark. I no i said i wanted to be as his teacher and coach. I did not realize it at 1st but that is exactly what i ended up doing. I just ended up doing it in a different classroom teaching and coaching soldiers in a physically demanding environment on and off the battlefield. Many are surprised when i told them i never worked for a woman. Male leaders who saw something in the. That said, many women we will models one sitting in the front row and mentors along the way pioneers women i like to what i was growing up my mom and coaches were at the top of the list. As you can imagine i have witnessed a lot of change. It is hard for millennials to fathom the 1970s reality of an old womans record. Rotc programs that excluded women. I witnessed the integration of what. Its really helped facilitate the major diversification of ranks policy change did not necessarily mean immediate change of mindset. Twenty years ago i had the opportunity. Chief of staff of the army. Mostly scientists, engineers i was Lieutenant Colonel . I cannot help but notice that everyone sitting around the table was a white male. Serving coffee and refreshments. Sheryl sandberg gathered 15 women for Leadership Conference i had the privilege of talking to this i cannot help but think about the room zero women in the engineering business. Then i recently read a newspaper article that reported talented, well educated women in High Technology careers were designed to leave because of the hostile Work Environment the counterparts did not think that the long. As as you can imagine, my journey was not without similar confrontation. Not everyone was glad to see and done what he. One of the 1st female student airborne school. Reporting to the 2nd Airborne Division the 1st female officer. The same all about what on earth are you going to do with this woman . I believe by staying on the moral high ground stooping to counterproductive tactics if we let others unduly influence or make decisions for us they went. If we let others drag us away from passion or something that we believe in the wind. I would ask myself the question if i quit i take it is and dont continue to make a difference who is a real winner and to his house . For me the seemingly surmountable challenges and opportunities. A. The theme of the day it was all about leadership. Zero, juicy gossip stories and throwing people into the bus makes good reading and sells a lot of books. I tried to give credit to those who serve as role models and describe leadership styles that were effective as well as those that one would want to emulate. Emulate. We learned from both good and bad leaders. When i was serving as commander have the opportunity to the president and ceo of cocacola committee invited me. Im surprised how much his organization and my having come. Over 60,000 employees organizational footprints and 140 countries in both the distribution business. The main difference is that the good people of cocacola were not normally operating under threat of ambush. We faced a similar leadership challenge and how do you diversified workforce not just race and gender diversity of thought build the bench and develop future leaders . Create a positive Work Environment one where everyone gets a fair chance to execute succession planning for Creative Vision for the organization and its future. I talk about all of these because i think these are the kind of things that contributed to my success. The rethinking if all 69,000 employees came to work every day clearly understanding how important she was and if i could reach out and get the next generation of leaders to believe that they could be anything that they want with hard work and commitment what a powerful thing it would be. Creating a Strategic Vision that empowered people, make them feel important good about themselves and their role in the organization allowing you to do just that by the time i left command i believe is not anything my employees did nothing i could do. As i said during my four decades in the service witnessed a lot of change and was opening the conversation should not stop there because there will be more to be done. You see in this book i love being a soldier. I never thought the 1st female anything. For some of my nation and the army the best way i could. I always wanted to be the best i could be playing a game to one thing, i would have turned it down if i did nothing best qualified. Things i learned along the way made me a better leader in person but if i had to do it all again change a thing. Regardless of your profession or lifes work i hope this will assist you in accomplishing whatever it is set out to do. Have to read the book. Or ask me a question. Thank you very much. [applause] [applause] all right. A little nervous. Appreciate your insight and look forward to reading your book. Issues that you experienced how you need to manage respect you how to earn their respect. Anything that you can elaborate on without being or catching the disease yourself and staying grounded. Thank you. That is a great question to talk about it in the book because it is something most people experience. Describe three people that i kind of categorized both that i dont the army. Advocates of people believing you support you and advocate for you and try to single worth and value. People who are patronizing. And final category as the is the detractors for people that do not like you no matter what. You are not going to change her mind but you might. The 1st thing is to recognize who you are dealing with. The 2nd is to stay on the moral high ground. Deal with them as an individual show you are professional and strive to a higher standard. Those who strive to exceed the standard gain credibility and support folks. Some just have not had the experience to work with you before. When i say you i mean, all of us. But what i found another section in the book talks about people that believe how wonderful they are. Also they think the thing about. People start believing that they are better. It is unfortunate that that happens have to do as well. If you cannot ignore it. Good, bad, or. We all have voice path. Stay on the moral high ground and you get sucked into the bad behavior. General the military is planning to lower the standards for the special forces navy seals to make it easier to get more women involved. Is this something you agree with . There is no lowering the standard. The guidance was that the services of them previously been in occupations with and that they would have to do there homework and determine the standards is occupations there are no standards. We have requirements, requirements, but it does not mean that they have been studied. And so do a lot of work being done. The last weekend in the worst thing we can do is the standard to accommodate whatever the social experiment. A dangerous profession and each occupation and standards must be met. One of the 1st women and it was not a popular decision. I have the five finger touches in behind, but you demonstrate that you are capable and end up being an undergraduate in my class. You demonstrate. I did not want to be a ranger. I wanted to do my job. Women that believe want to go to school, seals and i and i believe that if they are capable of doing that without lowering standards. I have the opportunity i would never have had the opportunity to command and to help you today. Allow me to do things that no one is able to. Today, eight women in Ranger School i understand the attrition rate is about the same as but that that is more about leadership. These are leadership schools if women are capable i think they should be about. I have full faith in the military that once the analysis, investigation command studies are done will come up with the right answer, whatever is. Thank you for your service, we are all incredibly proud and. So having said that all of the great things that you have done what is in your future . Will you make a difference next back. That is a good question and we want to continue to try to make a difference in our lives. The military is a place for the opportunity and privilege of leading and serving the soldiers from i dont know i dont know if i will find something i am dispassionate about but i want to try to make a difference and hope that it inspires young whether Elementary School were deciding their whole life will be. This book is something to think about inspiring, inspiring to dream big and not be dissuaded from what they want to do and that they have the personal courage to pursue that. There is no secret. It is will work for me and i hope works were folks. The other area serving on boards governance of defense companies, nondefense companies notforprofit to share leadership and business experiences from my organizations and how they complement. Thank you. Good afternoon. When tourists come to washington dc one of the most visible presence of the United States army is the tomb guards at the arlington cemetery. Frank all men. What answer we will you give to an eighthgrade girl says, why are there not female tomb guards . I believe that there have been. When i was in uniform i wanted to look with a soldier. I wanted to look like a soldier. I saw soldiers, not black white, men, women. I saw soldiers. They are held to a standard. Female wearing the same as the men hair pulled back pulling guard duty. At a time when we cannot even have women in the 80s court. So the doors continue to open. What i witnessed is that they continue to open. My knees pilot in the air force. Doors continue to open. I i believe with hard work and compassion and dedication they can be anything that they want to be. One more story, i have two pictures in my office. One is a 6th grader, and one is a 5th grader. They sent me a picture of themselves. One in there is fourstar they are the ones. I thought, my gosh i cannot imagine that you. Here is this young kid that now knows they can be anything they want. My friend and hero. [applause] and to my friend and hero did you keep a diary, and was it really helped . I do keep a diary. As the reasons i want to do a book on leadership. I did not want to do a memoir or have one of those big books people used to hold the door open. I want to talk about the things that helped me be successful which is why i spent time talking about and thinking about what you want to take away and share. So many thousands of books written on leadership. How do you make a different . I tried to pick those lessons that i thought were most relevant but put a human face on it not the stories behind this was my 1st story. Read a citation for the battalion commander. Sitting there reading. [applause] being on. It took me forever. I did not would get. New line from those thing. Could have fired me and said that is your 1st time you will get better. It caught me off guard. New line from these things when you have used it on fire all your life you say work on that practice, you will get better. You face of leadership is what i try to do. Tons of stories times of mistakes in terms of things i have learned along the way were human. The new head for christmas. No running away away. Biking and swimming is a things. Ms. Miss running right now. I dont know if i can promise to the dr. I do something everyday. Thank you for your question and your service. [inaudible question] thank you. Thank you. Great being here.
