Im not feeling well. At one point i had to carry him by ambulance. Its obvious from some of the used that when he was in the middle of some of the hardest fighting, he was sick and he was able to still lead his men. As soon as the battle was over, he would collapse and take into the hospital where he would recover or go home to recover. One thing that is very significant in his career, in the fall of 1862, he was then when he was home in indiana gathering, he was taken aback to the battlefield that was diverted to littletown in western kentucky because the confederate general Braxton Braggs full army was headed north and he was to go wait for the full union group that was going to be a pretty good battle. He went up there with a couple hundred troops are not completely surrounded by the Confederate Army of about 50,000. He held them off for several days waiting for the union troop that never came, the union army that never came. Eventually negotiated a surrender in that office has ever been done and warfare before. He went to the confederate camp and saw that the confederate officer he understood was a gentleman and asked for advice. Im sure you put something to the effect i am not militarily trained. What would an officer do in a situation where i pretty much told not to surrender, but you say you surrounded me with 50,000 men and a couple, maybe 500. Can i see proof that your army is as big as this . And as an officer, sir, this is not how wars are fought. Bitterness mrc said it took a liking to this man who wouldnt have led him astray for anything. They gave him a tour of the Confederate Army and he was outnumbered. Then negotiated a surrender where im sure the men were not in prison but sent home. He was paroled. About two or three months later, the union army worked out an exchange where he could come back in. Im sure the confederate got some Money Exchange for him. I thought it was a very unique approach to a very desperate actuation when he was left hanging out to dry. And was able to hold off an army that outnumbered his probably 100 to one without 1002 not one several days. Political strategist, mary matalin and transfer talk about the lessons the president ial election. He discussed the landscape of the last 20 years in their decision in 2008 to move to new orleans to raise their daughters. This is about an hour and a half. [applause] lets start with where the book starts and ends. New orleans. Did you both decide you wanted to leap d. C. At the same time . Or was there a lot of discussion about this move . Thats a great place to start and a great place to talk. Summertime and the living is easy. We also have a son, todd de la renta who is here. Who is coming out on a saturday afternoon . On ray. New orleans is playing. The new Orleans Saints are playing the Seattle Seahawks today. I want to hear a hoot at. Okay, i bring that up because thats who we fight about. He is a mere eightpoint underdog and i say we are going to win. I left new orleans 20 years before i met james carville, but after katrina when he said, sugar, were going to become a sliver on a river. As i am from chicago, from the midwest you know that if youre a woman, and any words that follow sugar come youre just going to melt. I follow you anywhere. The kids were then 10 and 12 and we had dealt our careers here. I was a little nervous about having the children come and the girls for whom had some high academic expectations should be in proximity with his academic record of 11 years at louisiana university. [laughter] so i will let you pick it up from there, honey. Thank you very much. It became public from a post reliable source. They called me and i said im going back to jerusalem. Its my jerusalem. After the august 2005, i had always lived up river from new orleans and spent a lot of time there. My grandmother was from their comic her parents got married there. I use, abuse, or take the culture and assumed it would always be there for pleasure whenever i wanted. And then the stories started coming in about whether people were going to come back. I read there were like us and trumpet lost in the storm. This kind of saying, understand that the thing that set new orleans off from every other place in the united state is we are not a very economically significant area in terms of political power with 380,000 people. But we are one of the most culturally significant places in the world. We have an identifiable coaching. You know when you see a pd note the food tastes like and looks like, with the music sound like camino at the carnival cruises. You know what new orleans architecture looks like. And the idea that this whole thing could go was just terrifying me. My wife when they wake up married, she always lets say. She loves the sounds, the fragrant, and the church bells, the rumbling of the streetcar. It sounds like no other place. But it is very, very fragile. Environmentally fragile, politically fragile, culturally fragile. I didnt know what, but i just couldnt i was in town depression. We were down in 07. She was as much bored as i was. I thought, come applaud it, probably couple other things to get to washington. I like to hear. I love the airport, the parks. Im not a guy whos like i hate washington. I just had to. It was so funny not funny. The day we note is like the day that died. I put it in the book. I was in the car. The kind of legendary and he called me and said im never going out again. And it was almost like coming in now, you want to leave. I kind of hope in the book they are. But i really, and i think we were. We look back and talk about it time, but in some ways its turned out great. The city has far greater Success Stories now that it all doing better, it seemed like a really cool and smart thing to do. If we look back, the gamble we took moving our children. Like a place with a culture, its hard to break into a fury child. Its not the easiest place. We have two girls. It wasnt the easiest thing. One of the things is if you want there for what i call the engineering of 2005, which are referred to as katrina, he didnt fight the battle. Youre sort of a newcomer. It is some element of risk involvement. You know, there is still stacked up. It is nowhere near to where we are today. It is like you walk into a casino and put 10,000 on black and it shows that black and a goat that was really to do that even though we won. I hope that was a metaphor. But while we are in washington, which we still do love, where we have a home, where one of our girls came back to school on the grounds that mother come you just dont provide enough structure for me. I want to Say Something good about politics. If youre a rock bottom, which we were after katrina, you cant have you dont have the luxury of having the dispute that we have. Youve just got to come up with aleutians. We literally commend mayor landrieu did not too ron and james did a poll and showed them a code. I wouldnt do everything if you feel the prohibition is scared prohibitionists aired on these issues that were practical conservative applications, i would be in the lead of three republicans that are in new orleans. [laughter] but to be a voice and to watch politics and policy work and work quickly is such an inspiration. We think this sends the comment is lots of confidence in all of our 2 cents in the same that the decline in all of that, things can change that if people want to change. People want to protect something they love, which they did in new orleans, we went from 15 feet underwater to by the time of the super bowl we were number one. We are number one in Silicon Valley south. We are number one much purgatorial capital. I could go on and on. But this is progress changes are in progress. There is a way to make progress. Much make a pitch about coastal recreation. You all should hear about coastal restoration. 40 of the seats are, 40 or more of the energy and 40 of your food comes up and down that mississippi. To the extent that land is eroding its going to impact the entire country. Theres a lot of issues there that we agree on politically except for the underdog today. Waylaid been on the same side of things. What talk about some in situ anonymous same side as. Cats. [laughter] i just have to say this. This is my motto. The presence of many cats is not proof of crazy cat lady in some. I do take point that cat hair in the butter is not pleasant. But one day, i came down and my favorite cat, i have about 12 of them. This cat was named black cat. Its hard to name cats creatively when you have 12. Half of this face was turned off. I said what happened . He was getting near the butter and somehow the stove accidentally turned on them are inhabited space. [laughter] so we have something in foods as kitty pyromania in our house. We do have a few dogs and pet rats and birds, but most of them are rescue, are rescued and thats important. This is a good rescue place, the Humane Society here in washington. This is seriously about animals, we have brought them animals than people who are having difficulty we socializing, you may remember when the dalai lama was here. He came to one domestic place in as our battered womens shelter, where we brought women in battered women together. We have now done a version of the program at walter reid. So i have a larger interest in animals. I am going to agree with you that we should put a lid on the butter. Looks, i could ride a horse before i could ride a bicycle. I will have a that wants a ribbon at the 4h level. Call me weird. I do not like animals in food prep areas. [laughter] maybe that is just some kind of a coming in now, cuckoos saying. But when i see a cat through, that turns me off. But i am fine. I could still get on a horse today. I had the best childhood you can imagine. When i was really young, my crib other through rice. How you throw rice is nothing but bad and water. Theres Nothing Better for a 5yearold in a july day to be trenching around in mud and water. He is not an antihero. He knows that the animals mean to me. Theyre not to him. Theyre not allowed in his office and he doesnt know any of their names are it every time i go to an emergency vet, we go why cant these learn how to cross the street. [laughter] he just doesnt get the whole animal kingdom. This question is for james. One for james and wonders for mary. He decided to give up working on u. S. Elections and only work on foreign elections. Explain why you made that decision. You know, first to welcome when president clinton was born i was 48. I just didnt want to be some guy out in center field, and now . I started going on. You know, you go back to that time. Theres so much attention. Is clinton sending somebody in . What does this mean, what does that mean . The real truth is in the United States wants to become a famous person, you have to earn a living being a famous person. If you do real work, it just doesnt work. Ive done i think 22 different countries. Im getting a little dashed last trip i took was the indonesia, which was a good ride. Newark to sing a more, which was one. Id run it then really involved in u. S. Politics. But i did was i was the campaign management. I didnt value it and sell a tv spot. I Just Got Paid for working 20 hours a day. It was a decision that i made a mammoth back on and i made some bad decisions. That was not one of them. When we did 92 campaign, the self on was his biggest george stephanopoulos. [laughter] so i am reading this stuff about, you know, the social media and the big data in every inning. Thats good. You know, there is something to be said for overstating your time. You know, youll be remembered. You and i have a common affection for sport. There is nothing worse than just be a former great athlete, you know, trying to take another year or two out there. What is that ecclesiastes . Theres a time for everything. There was a time for me to do it. Can i add to this . Not to into your questions, but i think because there is an emerging perception that people in politics, political operatives, whatever, okay. When we got into it and im happy to be a woman of a mage, why cant we say we are 60 . Im happy to be 60. Her and a masters. I wish i was 60. Okay, hes almost exceed. Very upset the girls are both gone. His life is over. Im chopped liver i guess. Anyway, in our day, you didnt make money. When we got married, we had nothing. He had a bike that i bought him. He never even had a car. Maybe he had a horse, i dont know. So since getting none of them to politics, though, we involved in politics kerry about what it is local systems in to deliver. They join me in jordan to teach the iraqi women how to codify human rights and icons to shame. We did ukraine together because right after the revolution, i didnt know that has been come out so wife works for reagan. You do these things. You volunteer to do these things because freedom around the world is inborn. So politics is a sport, as a career, theres a lot of people involved that it not why they are involved. I will save those women, those iraqi women do not understand a word they james was saying except he said one thing that a god and they make tshirts that said you finish the story. Just inking about it, the game and democracy is not having a first election. If the second. A few boos, you leave. I mean, ive always said that when i teach this. The most sacred secular event held in this country is in the former president leaves think it that the helicopter goes. I think it, big deal, bigger than you know. What prompted it is the cab drivers from africa, they followed u. S. Politics here more then you can imagine. I said what you find so fascinating about politics i expected because the buddy list, the only way you leave there is to get shot and live in a pine box or whatever. And so, i was just trying, one of my favorite stories is steve cornyn, an old friend of mine from the days in israel asked me to meet with a man named asher and connie, was running for president of afghanistan. So i called Richard Holbrooke at the state department. I said richard kum is there any problem with in the u. S. Working for this guy . He said james, this is the finest men that i know. So then i did a little investigation. A common back in and richard, this guy is a fine guy. I know he cant pay me. I dont and he can pay my airfare to take pictures. You remember the kennedy generation. You have to go. I guess ive got to go. [laughter] so i go to kabul and stand the guys house and tried to read a Campaign Plan. So on the way out about two weeks later i got reimbursed for my airfare, which is not a bad deal. At least i was not 13,000 for the ticket. Now you want to hear me fight about you would think a guy whos going to kabul, where his wife had been. I had in all of earth and an uparmored vehicle with double snipers wouldve asked me something about security . No, he is driving around in a little bus with ieds everywhere. Its pretty scary when the Traffic Stats you can get blown up. It was sometime after i left, but it was a pretty it was a different country into a Campaign Plan for afghanistan was really different. We got 1 , which is what we predict it to get. Its a great guy, a great experience. Cant win them all. People say they have lost races and theres people who say the folks at number lacerate, we call those players. Mary, its 1992. The election is over and you dont have a job. You dont have much money and you end up on what you call the first chip sideshow. You also rate that the show was read until it became a hit. Explain what you mean by that. And never wanted to be on tv. I dont like being on tv to this day. I kind of like radio. Can i say that joe . I have a face for radio. But when george h. W. Bush, whom i adored, was losing, and this frequently happens in campaigns and nobody wanted to go out and defend. The rats start jumping ship and the worse the numbers god, the more i went out there. So i became this phase of defend of losing this campaign and he became a hero. [inaudible] [laughter] so, not only did i have no job, i had no prospects of a job because i was a loser. I had no money coming in. I had a mortgage. Unlike kid who lived in an apartment with a murphy bed. So the incline called up and said you want to do tv show . I said i hate tv. Anyways, i had to pay the bills. I didnt think anybody was watching us. It was waynes world on. It was like being in a basement. All we did was we have a bottle of wine before the show and religious talk about whatever. The next thing we knew, this was before there was political tv. It was cnbc before cnbc was seen in the. What i say was such a lowbudget show, we go out in the hallway, paul into one of these kind of tables. We brought our own wine. We did our makeup, did her own hair. All of a sudden it just became this cult hit. The reason we found out is because people started sending us furniture. The competitors and Congress People dont follow this stuff, but the staffers do, so we started getting great guests. And then it became when you have a head, everybody gets involved in case you you have to fix your hair and get different pose and you had to do real interviews. And so, i quit. [laughter] my favorite element of the show was tony kornhauser in was the regular kind of gas. Mary ann jean was singing to her precious and tony was her because he did not hairbrushes. We were singing going to the chapel tony is the worst night hairbrush . Who remember the famous kristoff. He insisted on going there. We didnt have hair and makeup. He went there and got his beard and, eyebrows done, hair done. I forgot about that. If youre watching, you know what true. 22 and 22 this year. Ive got and diego. A san diego covers the 10point, go to the top of the knocking. 23 and 22 again. Ill tell you, the number of people that i run into at washington and they should pick on tonys radio show. Its like coming in now, its really stunning. Never pick against us, but stalin says everything. The weathers going to be horrible. We still have our national ticket. Sports has always been a big part of my life. You know, its great to get the saints. Lets talk about something else. Lets go to my last question before we go to the audience questions. This isnt really from the book, but i have one political question. What is one piece of advice he should be with you to your own party that they are not doing currently that would prove that party . Well, i dont like doing tv, that i like tv and not. The last time im going to say it. Republicans have to be republicans. They cant be the lesser version of democrat. I grew up as a democrat on the southside of chicago. It became a conservative when i started reading and paying tax base. I know i am a conservative. I note the constitution is. I am an imperious sense someone or an aristotelian member. We have a long history of folk works and w
