CSPAN2 Interview With Representative Lloyd Smucker March 27, 2017

Anticipate that or serving in congress. I ran a business for 25 years. We grew a company into a several hundred employees and saw over the time what i thought was the overreach of government, the encroachment of government in decisions we were making and Additional Resources that we had to commit to comply with regulations and so on. And so i really believe that government that overreach of government is Holding Businesses back. Think it still continues to hold our economy book and holds people back. Decided to run to make sure my canadas and grandkids would have the opportunity to live the American Dream that i had the opportunity to do. What was your business . Construction company. Just a little background on that. I think im the only member of congress ever to be born into an amish family. My parents were actually what is call drive thing buggies and i was number ten of 12 kids and so i was the first in my family to graduate from high school. The amish tradition is formal education ends in eighth or ninth agreed. So when i approached my parents with the idea, theyve agreed. They were reluctant at first but they allowed in titaness high school but not a public school. So i had to pay my own tuition and i earned my way through high school by hanging dry wall at night and then brought an older brother, bought that Small Business just few employees, and was a Business Owner at 17 years old. Operating that business out of a bedroom at my parent home. But again, the tremendous opportunity to grow that company. We became regional lead new year shall construction with commercial construction with several hundred employees so being able to start with little or nothing and live your dreams and theres tibet throughout my district and throughout the country very similar to that, but today i think it would be a lot harder. That was 35 years ago that i started that company. A lot harder today for someone to do that because of the overreach of government. Are you still part of the Amish Community . The area that i represent, particularly the Lancaster County portion of that district, is the largest Amish Community in the country but i myself am not amish. Im lutheran today. What impact do you think in that childhood, amish, on who you are . Well, theres the Amish Community is a hardworking, great family values, really care about their neighbors and care about other people, and so those are all values i was raised with, and so i think that led to some degree to my interest in trying to find solutions to problems that were faced with. So i first served as a township supervisor, and enjoyed the opportunity, trying to solve problems. And thats been my approach in the state senate and my approach here as well. What would you say the your record was the state senate level . Sure. What were you focused on . Well, again, i represent a diverse district but also a pretty conservative district. In a lot of ways. But my i tend to like the nolabels aspect. Theres actually a nolabels caucus here that im potentially joining, but the point is im i work in the state senate to try to find solutions to difficult problems, and im willing to work with anyone who may agree with me and knowing that everyone is here representing different districts, and they have different experiences, and a big part of being successful in the legislator, the state senate, is leadershipping to listen and understand other viewpoints and then try to find common ground. What is your focus here in washington . Im very pleased to be part of the educational work force committime was chair of the Education Committee in the stat senate and we worked hard to ensure that every child in pennsylvania had the opportunity for a world class education that prepared them for the career, college, military, whatever they chose to do, and here were going to one focus of the committee is reauthorization of the Higher Education act. Some really great opportunities there, particularly we need an additional focus on career in technical education, and we have a lot of Jobs Available but we need to ensure that we are preparing our students to take those jobs. Jobs are changing today. Thats a real opportunity. Im also on the transportation and infrastructure committee. I think this would be a great session to be part of that. We did some work on that in pennsylvania as well, where we realized that infrastructure is a core part of government and sew were able to increase funding for highways and bridges and at the same time we were cutting back in government. Its about focusing on what are the Core Functions of government. And im looking forward to working with the administration and with colleagues across the aisle on building 21st century infrastructure. On education in your previous job the state senate, you did some work with education pertaining to ill leap illegal immigrants. What was the legislation and some might view that as not in line with the republican party. Explain. I think we do we must fix our immigration system and it does start, i believe, with securing the border. We have to know who is coming into our country. We have to know who has come across the border when they should not. We have to know who is overstayed their welcome. We know people are out to harm us so whatever we do with immigration you start with securing the border so i fully support that approach. Then from there, we have to build a system that we have to fix our Legal Immigration system and we are a country of immigrants, and we are back talking about the American Dream earlier. We should be welcoming people who want to come here, who want to work hard, who want to raise their families, who want to live the American Dream. That is what made our country great and in the past and will do so in the future as well. You have what some might other members of Congress Might say is a shorter commute compared to those who live on the west coast. Just have to drive a couple of hours to get back home. Who is back home. Tell us about your family. Sure. I have other little over a twohour drive if i hit the traffic right. So its really fortunate in that way. It is a little different when i served in the state senate i was able to commute every day, and i would do that here as well if i was just a little closer because its high priority of mine to get back to the district and hear from con city students and my family. My wife is there, but i have a 14yearold son who is in eight grade and then two who are in college as well at 19 and 21. What does your wife do . She has been focused on raising the kids so has been a stayathome mom while we were raising the family. Particularly appreciative of that because, of course, the state legislature and here takes a lot of time away from the family. So she has been focused on trying to create a normal childhood for our kids. Its been great. What did your children think about you running for the u. S. Theyre excited about it. Obviously it means im not there as much for them. It would have been probably a more difficult decision for me had my kids been younger, bus its a good age now with two in college, but theyre very excited about what is happening here, and particularly my son really seems to be hes 14 and interested in politics, and one thing is he gets to meet some people he would not get to meet eyes and we try to have the family down here as much as we possibly we can. Thank you for your time today. Thank you for having me. House Speaker Paul Ryan spoke the American Israel Public Affairs Committee Conference today about the recent uptick in antisemitic threats, vandalism and attacks across the u. S. He called the attacks vial and disgusting. You can watch his remarks at cspan2. Org. Heres some of what he had to say. In recent months, we have seen an uptick in vandalism, acts of desecration, bomb threats against jewish communities nationwide nice. Ive seen it in my own backyard in white fish bay, wisconsin, a community right on the north site of milwaukee. Two threaten on the local jcc. I was there in february. I mean, just think about the parents getting those calls in middle of the day. Makes you turn your stomach. These threats and atongs jewishamericans are vial and they are disgusting. [applause] , theyre rooted in a poison yous ideology of hate and must be wholeheartedly rejected. So what want to say to you is, youre not alone. We stand with you. I stand with you. My colleagues and Congress Stand with you and the American People stand with you. [applause] together well root out this evil wherever it may surface. We are all in this thing together.
