CSPAN2 Key Capitol Hill Hearings October 12, 2016

Chambers and say it was snowing outside so you must be wrong. Using that as evidence to dispute scientists. That over time what happens is that you produce a nominee who is all about obstruction, insults, and makes up his own facts. No, i do not think that is how the majority of republicans think, but this is the habits that you could be too that create this kind of a nominee. Now you find a situation in which the guy says stuff that nobody would find tolerable if they were applying for a job at 711. Or, i mean i dont know what job, if, if you are betting someone for a job and then you heard what somebody said on tape about women, set aside what there is say about us, you would not hire that would you hire that person for the job . The fact that now you have people saying well, we strongly disapprove. We really disagree. We find those comments disgusting. But were still endorsing him. [laughter] we still think you should be president. That doesnt make sense to me. Now, i hear then some people saying well, im a christian and so im all about forgiveness, because nobodys perfect. Will that is true. I am certainly not perfect, nobodys perfect. And i to believe in forgiveness and redemption but that doesnt mean im going to elect the person president. [applause] if somebody something terrible shows themselves to be unqualified for office to my, i can forgive them i suppose if they are sincere about it. But i dont want them necessarily leading the country. So you cant have it both ways here. You cannot repeatedly denounce what is said by someone and then say but im still going to endorse them to be the most powerful person on the planet. And to put them in charge. So, i just want that point because there are still a number of republican elected officials, some of whom i know and im sure are embarrassed and said that was really a terrible thing he said but they cant bring themselves to say, i cannot endorse the sky. By the way, why did it take so long for some of them to finally walk away . [applause] i mean we saw this coming. Hes been saying really bad stuff for a while now. What did you think . He was going to his going to transform himself . I mean, im 55. Its hard for me to change. I know its change. I know it 70 is going to be harder. [applause] anyway, i wanted to make that point. Let me let me get back on script here. So setting aside character issues and what he said, he called himself the best business guy who ever lived, but we have a lot of businessmen and women around the country who have succeeded without hiding their tax returns climb a warm buffet is a good businessman, he just put out his tax return. I also dont know a lot of casino operators who managed to lose almost 1 billion in a year. [applause] they say the house always wins, i dont know what happened i dont know folks who use that failure then to avoid paying federal income taxes for our troops and our bets, our roads, and or schools. You dont brag about not paying your taxes. You dont say, that makes you smart, no, that means you are not a responsible citizen because those taxes are used to make sure veterans get the care they need or our roads get rebuilt, or our students are able to get the support they need to get an education. [applause] when i hear somebody say they were rooting for the housing crisis because hey, that is called business or file bankruptcy six times which let him get out of paying for what healed Small Businesses and their workers, when your concern is in for the families facing the hardship of foreclosure in a Small Businesses and communities that depend on them but rather how you might get over and make a buck off of it, then okay, you know what . Maybe that is your kind of business, but is that is not the spirit that you bring to the highest office in the land. You should not be president of the United States. A guy who spent 70 years on this earth showing no regard for working people is not going to suddenly be the champion of working people. [applause] if you want a leader who actually values hard work and values working americans, if you want higher wages and Better Benefits and a spare tax code, equal pay equal pay for equal work for women and regulations on wall street then you have to vote for hillary and he have to vote for deborah, that is what im talking about. [applause] and if youre concerned about who is going to keep you and your family safe in a dangerous world, the choice is even clearer. Hillary hillary has worked closely with our intelligence and our diplomats diplomats and military. She will see to it that our troops finish the job defeating isis. She will do it without resorting to torture, or banning entire religions from our country. She has got the chops. She has the temperament, she has the knowledge to be the next commanderinchief. [applause] and then you have the guy who insults pows anna goldstar mom and calls our troops and veterans week. He doesnt know the men and women in uniform who make us strong. [applause] and then he cozies up to dictators. Tells our allies we might not be on their side unless they pay up first. Look, he may not make it on his promises, but the United States of america has to make good on ours. He might be up i guess at 3 00 a. M. But thats because he is tweeting insults somebody who got under his skin instead of getting a decent nights sleep so he can be read in the morning to do the job of being president of the United States. [applause] come on. He is not fit to be commanderinchief. He certainly is not fit to lead the worlds greatest democracy. Let me say this, and this is been remarked about in this is serious business. When in the middle of the debate you threaten to put your political opponent in jail, that, no trial, no indictment, no lawyers, just, when you welcome russian meddling in our electoral process, then you are disregarding not just things like facts or evidence were free press, you are chipping away at basic values like tolerance due process, and Mutual Respect. And our democracy doesnt work that way. There are other nations around the world who operate like that. They are political systems operate like that. And those nations breakdown. We have student in contrast in opposition to those kinds of ideas. I frankly never thought i would see the day went we had a major Party Candidate who would be promoting those kinds of notions. Look greensboro, one thing i have learned these past eight years is that progress is hard. You have to battle it out. Even when we get victories like obama care, they are never perfect and you have to keep working to make them better. When you take two steps forward on Something Like Climate Change therell be folks who push back and its okay because thats the price of a democracy if you dont get 100 of what you want 100 of the time. Democracy is not easy, especially not in a big, big, diverse country like this. You have to work at it. Theres only one candidate in this race who understands that democracy and it big, diverse country doesnt work if you constantly demonize each other. I mean that literally by the way. I was reading the other day, theres a guy on the radio who apparently thinks me and hillary are demons. Said we smell like sulfur. And thats something. [applause] [laughter] now, come on people. Democracy does not work if you say stuff like that and apparently there are people who believe that stuff. And there listening to it constantly. And you cannot have leaders who are promoting that, because what happens then is that we get so divided and people are so angry at each other that nothing gets done. Hillary understands that. She. She understands on most big issues it is not always simple black and white. Things get done requires compromise. Even when you are 100 right you think. She knows her progress to happen we have to listen to each other and see each other. We have to fight for principles but we also have to fight to find common ground. She believes we can and should conduct ourselves better. Thats thats not always flashy. Doesnt always attract headlines. Our politics doesnt always make that easy. We went progress right away, our way, and if, and if someone is getting in our way then we start calling them names and the press finds it attractive to promote conflict and that with a flashy headline. But if we are willing to work at it progress does happen. If you dont believe that, ask the 20,000,000 more americans who have healthcare today that didnt have it before. [applause] asked the marine who probably served his country without having to hide the husband he loves. Ask the m people have more pell grants and help to get a college education. [applause] change takes time but it is possible. And heres the last thing, it doesnt just depend on one person, it depends on all of us. Especially want to talk to the young people here for a minute. [applause] you have been through a lot in your young lives. You have grown up through war. You have grown up through recession. You have grown up through all kinds of incredible changes i mean, it was just a little bit ago that there was no such thing as a smart phone. Which i know seems insane to you. But but its true, we survived without them. So things have just been happening past. But what i have seen from young people is that you care about looking out for each other, not turning on each other. The young people i meet are more tolerant, more sophisticated, more interested in the world and you want to be active and engaged in the work of creating a vibrant and innovated, inclusive and mobile society in a democracy that works. When i meet young people, strange as this seems, see the values that my mom and my grandparents tried to instill in me. Decent, honest, hardworking, civil, courteous, polite, yes maam, no maam, polite, yes maam, no maam, how can i help you maam . I see those values in this next generation. Those values are not oldfashioned. When i see people who say they are conservative, my grandparents were kind of conservative. But to them that meant you acted right, it meant you had good home training. It meant you didnt say crude things just to get attention. I think most young people understand that. They understand those values that are timeless. Theyre not even democrat or republican. They are American Values that bind us together as a country. So there are a lot of things about our politics we can seem cheap, trivial, and frustrating. I know. I have seen it but heres a chance to reject the divisive, meanspirited politics. And it will just take us backwards. Theres nothing cheaper trivial about that. About making that statement, the chance to elect a woman who spent her entire life trying to make this country better. That is real. That is true. And young people, you have a chance have a chance to do that, so do not fall for the easy summit is him of my vote doesnt matter or all politicians are the same. That is exactly what hillarys opponent want you to think so you dont vote. I promise you, your vote matters, read up on your history. You just heard from judge there is a time right here North Carolina and look, that judge, he was good. He was right there before you young people and he cannot vote. There is a time when folks had to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar, the number of bubbles on a bar of soap. It wasnt soap. It wasnt that long ago when folks were beaten. Registered voters in mississippi. It wasnt long ago that a man like justice fry who already graduated college was denied the right to vote because he failed the socalled literacy tests. That just happened. It the reason it changes because young people said its going to change. [applause] and people risked everything so we could pull that lever. Freedom writers came down so that people could have the right to vote. [applause] whatever the issue you care about the choice cannot be clear. If you care about inequality, if you supported bernie in the primaries. [applause] you have a choice. You can vote for somebody whose economic policies are driven solely by greed and selfinterest, or you can vote for someone who is going to make sure the economy works for buddy, not just folks at the top. Who will fight to make sure minimum wage workers get a raise and women get paid the same as men for doing the same job. [applause] if you care about criminal Justice Reform, you can vote for somebody who has fought against civil rights and equality his entire career you can vote for somebody who started her career going undercover from school to school to make sure minority kids were getting an equal shot at a good education and have been fighting for justice and equality ever sense. If you care about the environment, and Climate Change, you can vote for somebody says its a chinese plot. And put the climate denier in charge of hiring folks at epa, or you can vote for somebody who believes in science and will keep America World leader in fighting to protect our climate. If you care about immigration reform, you can vote for somebody who apparently only sees immigrants as criminal rapists to be rounded up or kicked out, or, even though by the way they have already paid more taxes probably than he has. [applause] or, you you can vote for a grand daughter of an immigrant who believes everybody deserves a chance to contribute to this country we love. [applause] you care about transparency you can vote for a candidate who has released decades worth of her tax return or, the only candidate in decades who refused to release any and all. One candidate has a foundation that saved countless lives around the world. The other took money that people gave to his charity to buy a 6foot tall painting of himself. I am not kidding. One candidate traveled more countries than any secretary of state before her. The other is, donald trump. So when he has to what do you have to lose, the answers, you have everything to lose. All of the progress we made the last eight years is on the ballot. Stability is on the ballot. Respect for women is on the ballot. [applause] tolerances on the ballot. Justices on the ballot. [applause] equality is on the ballot. [applause] democracy is on the ballot. [applause] if you want to it make it up resounding message. Turned back racism and misogyny and sent a message for progress. Send a message for fax. Send a message for reason, send a message for hope. [applause] send a message by voting for Hillary Clinton. [applause] send a message for debra ross. Send a message about who we are in the American People, and make our kids proud. Thank. Thank you greensboro, i love you.
