CSPAN3 Interfaith Meeting With Pope Francis At 911 Memorial September 25, 2015

Branch, is trying to ram that through congress and can get away with it. And not a single representative stands up and said, i have to file a bill of impeachment. He is overstepping his authority under the constitution and violating his oath of office. It is an outrage. Thats what this comes down to. Thats all i have to say. Thank you. All right. Comment from Jonathan Easley at the hill. Trump mobbed by reporters at the value voters summit. Says it was time for boehner to step down. S says he didnt fight for conservative principles. It was made by senator marco rubio at that summit. Heres what it looked like. Well see how things progress. Just a few minutes ago Speaker Boehner announced he will be resigning. [ applause ]. And with all due respect to the people that serve in government, it is important at this moment with respect to him and the service he has provided to our country. Its not about him or anybody else. Im not here today to bash anyone. But the time has come to turn the page. The time has come to turn the page and allow a new generation of leadership in this country. Our live coverage continues on cspan. Org. Lots of president ial candidates and others speaking there. Donald trump too. Back to your calls and comments about the announcement of Speaker Boehner stepping down in october. We will take you live to new york shortly for the ceremony at the 9 11 memorial with pope francis. Jim, good morning, on the democrats line. Caller i just thought the republicans on this program could hear me now. I am very disappointed in the Republican Party. I almost left the Democratic Party and became a republican. I feel ashamed and very, very disappointed at the way you people are acting. Believe me, youre not making any sense at all. Thank you. Fort irwin, california. Eric, good morning. Caller good morning. It is very concerning. John boehner is the moderating force with those in his own party who take a hard line to the right. It is a bittersweet moment because we dont know whats next. At a time when we have the pope in america whose whole message has been unity and working together, im afraid were not going to get that with whatever comes next. Okay, eric. Thank you. Still in california. Dawn on the democrat line. Caller yes. Good morning. I have to say that the last two callers i feel the same way. Many of us hardworking citizens who are paying our taxes, looking for leadership. And the disrespectful approach that this extremist sector over the Republican Party is taking is quite concerning. For example, planned parenthood is for womens health. Providing Health Services to a lot of lower socioeconomic people as well as middleclass women as well. This extremist stuff has just got to stop. Were not going to get anywhere. Thats what we are trying to do. We appreciate your comments. Were going to let you go. The pipe is arriving at the 9 11 memorial. Well watch live on cspan3. [ applause ]. On behalf of this very distinguished group represents of the hindu, buddhist, jane see, native american, jewish, islam, civic and Public Officials and the board of the september 11th memorial downedation, i renew to you our welcome and our joy at your visit. Welcome, holy father. [ applause ]. Now i can tell you papa francesco, we in new york are sinners. We are sinners. We have many flaws. We make many mistakes. But one of the things we do well is sincere and fruitful interreligious friendship. Our ancestors came here for religious freedom, and they found in new york city an atmosphere of respect and appreciation for religious diversity. About which you just spoke at the United Nations. We, who have the honor of pastoring our people, Work Together, pray together, meet together, talk to one another, and try to serve together the as one the city we are proud to call our earthly home, while awaiting our true and eternal residence in heaven. So very often do we recall the faith of the psalmist, god is in the midst of the city. Your prayer, presence, and words inspire us. So thank you for being here. [ applause ]. You may be seated. In this place, where horrendous violence was committed falsely in the name of god, we, representatives of the World Religions in this great city of new york, gather to offer words of comfort and prayer. With love and affection, we recall the victims of the 9 11 attacks. We pray that their souls, and the souls of those serving the the First Responders are forever remembered for an eternal blessing. Today and everyday, may we understand our shared mission to be, in the words of pope francis, a Field Hospital after battle to heal the wounds and warm the hearts of a humanity in so desperate need of comfort. Intolerance and ignorance fueled those who attacked this place. The courage of todays gathering distinguishes us from the opponents of religious freedom as we stand together as brothers and sisters to condemn their horrific acts of violence and honor each life that was lost unconditionally, as we read in the koran that one life lost is like all mankind and one life saved is like all mankind. To god all life is sacred and precious. Where others fail, let us be the peaceful reminders of that notion to his creation. The book of psalms teaches us that we should love peace and pursue peace. Let us honor those killed in this place by becoming, in the words of st. Francis, instruments of peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light and where there is sadness, joy. Men and women from all walks of life ran to this place in hopes of saving lives. The sole intent of those First Responders was the protection of others, regardless of the cost to them as individuals. As the worst of humanity sought to take life, they exemplified the best of humanity through their selflessness, willing to give their entire life in hopes of saving another. Their story is one that each of us should Carry Forward with us, both in thought and in action, as we move forward from this place. The koran declares that allah is with those who are righteous and those who do good. Let us embody their unconditional love, their continued strength, their unwavering hope, and their pursuit of good, as we seek to build a much needed peace. Let us learn to share this big apple we call home in all its diversity and flavor. Through friendship and dialogue, may the timbre and tonality of each of our faith traditions be heard in the great symphony of our city and nation. In the words of your holiness may we respect and love one another as brothers and sisters. May we learn to understand the sufferings of others. May we live to see the day, as envisioned by the prophet micah, that everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree and no one shall make them afraid, for the lord almighty has spoken. The koran states oh mankind, we have created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes so that you might know one another. We have gathered here today as men and women who seek to meet ignorance with understanding. Through our knowing of each other today, let us move beyond a mere toleration of our differences and work towards a muchneeded celebration of them. Let us be bold enough to build partnerships with new friends and allies and together be the reason that people have hope in this world, not the reason that people dread it. Please rise. O god of love, compassion, and healing, look on us, people of many different faiths and religious traditions, who gather today on this hallowed ground, the scene of unspeakable violence and pain. We ask you in your goodness to give eternal light and peace to all who died here, the heroic firstresponders, our fire fighters, police officers, Emergency Service workers, and Port Authority personnel, along with all the innocent men and women who were victims of this tragedy simply because their work or service brought them here on september 11, 2001. We ask you, in your compassion, to bring healing to those who, because of their presence here 14 years ago, continue to suffer from injuries and illness. Heal, too, the pain of stillgrieving families and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope. We are mindful as well of those who suffered death, injury, and loss on the same day at the pentagon and in shanksville, pennsylvania. Our hearts are one with theirs as our prayer embraces their pain and suffering. God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world peace in the hearts of all men and women and peace among the nations of the earth. Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred and who justify killing in the name of religion. God of understanding, overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events. Grant that those whose lives were spared may live so that the lives lost here may not have been lost in vain. Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all. Ladies and gentlemen, kindly take your seats. Nam a aste. May god protect us, may god nourish us. May we Work Together. May our dialogue be be free fro. Om, peace, peace, peace. Lead us from untruth to truth, from darkness to light, from death to immortality. My may all know peace. Dear friends, excuse myself for not speaking english. Translator ive many different emotions standing here at ground zero, where thousands of lives were taken in a senseless act of violence and destruction. You can feel the pain here, its palpable. The water we see flowing towards that empty pit reminds us of all those lives which fell prey to those who think that destruction, tearing down, is the only way to settle conflicts. It is the silent cry of those who were victims of a mindset which knows only violence, hatred and revenge. A mindset which can only cause pain, suffering, destruction and tears. The flowing water is also a symbol of our tears, tears at so much devastation and ruin, past and present. This is a place where we shed tears, we weep out of a sense of helplessness in the face of injustice, murder, and the failure to settle conflicts through dialogue. Here we mourn the wrongful and senseless loss of innocent lives because of the inability to find solutions which respect the common good. This flowing water reminds us of yesterdays tears, but also of all the tears still being shed today. A few moments ago i met some of the families of the fallen First Responders. Meeting them made me see once again how acts of destruction are never impersonal, abstract or merely material. They always have a face, a concrete story, names. In those family members, we see the face of pain, a pain which still touches us and cries out to heaven. At the same time, those family members showed me the other face of this attack, the other face of their grief the power of love and remembrance. A remembrance that does not leave us empty and withdrawn. The name of so many loved ones are written around the towers footprints. We can see them, we can touch them, and we can never forget them. Here, amid pain and grief, we also have a palpable sense of the heroic goodness which people are capable of, those hidden reserves of strength from which we can draw. In the depths of pain and suffering, you also witnessed the heights of generosity and service. Hands reached out, lives were given. In a metropolis which might seem impersonal, faceless, lonely, you demonstrated the powerful solidarity born of mutual support, love and selfsacrifice. No one thought about race, nationality, neighborhoods, religion or politics. It was all about solidarity, meeting immediate needs, brotherhood. It was about being brothers and sisters. New york city firemen walked into the crumbling towers, with no concern for their own wellbeing. Many succumbed, their sacrifice enabled great numbers to be saved. This place of death became a place of life too, a place of saved lives, a hymn to the triumph of life over the prophets of destruction and death, to goodness over evil, to reconciliation and unity over hatred and division. It is a source of great hope that in this place of sorrow and remembrance i can join with leaders representing the many religious traditions which enrich the life of this great city. I trust that our presence together will be a powerful sign of our shared desire to be a force for reconciliation, peace and justice in this community and throughout the world. For all our differences and disagreements, we can live in a world of peace. In opposing every attempt to create a rigid uniformity, we can and must build unity on the basis of our diversity of languages, cultures and religions, and lift our voices against everything which would stand in the way of such unity. Together we are called to say no to every attempt to impose uniformity and yes to a diversity accepted and reconciled. This can only happen if we uproot from our hearts all feelings of hatred, vengeance and resentment. We know that that is only possible as a gift from heaven. Here, in this place of remembrance, i would ask everyone together, each in his or her own way, to spend a moment in silence and prayer. Let us implore from on high the gift of commitment to the cause of peace. Peace in our homes, our families, our schools and our communities. Peace in all those places where war never seems to end. Peace for those faces which have known nothing but pain. Peace throughout this world which god has given us as the home of all and a home for all. Simply peace. In this way, the lives of our dear ones will not be lives which will one day be forgotten. Let us pray in silence. In this way, the lives of our dear ones will not be lives which will one day be forgotten. Instead, they will be present whenever we strive to be prophets not of tearing down but of building up, prophets of reconciliation, prophets of peace. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be with god our creator, family all are we let us walk with each other, in perfect harmony let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now with every step i take, let this be my solemn vow to take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me peace on earth, let it begin with me to take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me [ applause ] thank you, young peoples chorus of new york city. Youre an icon of what this sacred site reminds of. My brothers and sisters in hope and promise, i invite you to stand and exchange a sign of peace. As a result of our efforts, our two nations are working together more closely across a broader range of critical issues. And our cooperation is delivering results for both our nation and want the world. Since i took office, american exports to china have doubled. Chinese investment in the United States helps support jobs across our country. We partner to address global challenges, whether its promoting nuclear security, combating piracy off the horn of africa, Encouraging Development and reconciliation in afghanistan, and helping to end the ebola epidemic in west africa. The historic Climate Change announcements that we made last year in beijing have encouraged other countries to step up as well, increasing the prospects for a stronger global agreement this year. And as a member of the p5 plus 1, china was critical to the sanctions regime that brought iran to the negotiating table and to the talks that produced a deal to prevent iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. So greater prosperity and greater security, thats what american and chinese cooperation can deliver. Thats why i want to say again, the United States welcomes the
