We started with this yesterday, but now more talk about the fill bust, and i know a lot of you werent happy with the fact they found something good to say about rand paul which is not not praising in any way or identifying in any way or giving him a pass in any way on all of the other crazy things he has said in his life including that he said he wasnt sure he would have voted for the 1965 civil rights act, but on this issue, two things where i think he did the right thing. Number one he did a real filibuster. He really got up and talked for as long as his lungs and bladder held out. He didnt just threaten to filibuster and then go off to his office and watch television he talked for 12 hours and 52 minutes, and he raised serious questions about a very serious issue about when the United States feels that we have the legal and the moral authority to use drones as killing machines either against our enemies, those plotting against us where in the world, when in the world, and whom can we attack, and the other question do we have the legal and the moral authority to use drones to kill american citizens overseas or hear on american soil . And he remember he started that filibuster a day he filibustered this issue and the confirmation of john brennan as an excia director a day after he got a letter from eric holder attorney general who stated that yes the United States had the Legal Authority this is what he said the Legal Authority under some circumstances in emergencies to be sure we had the Legal Authority to kill american citizens with drones on american soil. Thats what holder said at the beginning of the week and what triggered the filibuster on rand paul. He got a lot of praise and got an answer from eric holder on that question. Do you really mean that americans could be targeted by their own government with a drone in the United States . After the filibuster eric holder wrote rand paul a very brief letter yesterday clearing it up. Here is jay carney leading that letter. Quote, does the president have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an american not engaged in combat on american soil . The answer is no. Bill boom. At least we got the answer. And by the way the answer is exact opposite of what eric holder intimated, at least in his first letter to rand paul at the beginning of the week. So good job by rand paul. And he raised the issue and got americans talking about drones. Even president obama said these are very serious questions. We have to develop some real guidelines on drones and he said they are going to do it within the next few months. It seems like we should have had the guidelines before we started killing people with drones but i hate to get picky about it. But again, rand paul got praise from a lot of quarters among others from harry reid. I have learned from my experiences with talk filibusters is this. To succeed you need strong convictions, but also a strong bladder. Its obvious that paul has both. [ laughter ] bill strong convictions and a strong bladder to go along. But if harry reid and i paraded rand paul, not everybody did. John mccain and Lindsey Graham attacked him yesterday on the floor of the senate and accused him of being way out of line. And the more i heard john mccain yesterday the more i said rand paul good job. Here is john mccain who dares make this statement on the floor of the senate. Well, mr. President , i watched some of that quote, debate unquote yesterday. I saw colleagues of mine who know better come to the floor and voice this same concern which is totally unfounded. Bill so condescending. Rand paul got the spot light yesterday and john mccain couldnt stand it and of course his little butt boy Lindsey Graham because john mccain is upset then lindsey is upset too. Oh, yeah and the go ahead that john mccain in fact went on actually to call at it disservice to raise this issue. So we have done i think a disservice to a lot of americans by make them believe that somehow they are in danger from their government. They are not. By the way, what have republicans done for the past five or six years . Making their terrified that the government is going to take your guns. Everyone wants to take over your lives. Bill yeah, thats all they do is the scare tactic and rand paul was responding to later from the attorney general of the United States who said we have the Legal Authority to kill americans on american soil with a drone. Jesus, thats worth raising the question about it. And it was john mccain and Lindsey Graham, what service do they provide by raising the big issue of benghazi and accusing president obama for being responsible for the death of ambassador stephens when the congress had cut the funding. So they made a huge phony deal about ben gau benghazi in fact they still are. And when rand paul raises a serious issue by the way those issues are not disappeared where is our privacy when you may soon a Police Department drone circling over your backyard every day . These are serious issues this rand paul raised with the full buster. I repeat. Good for rand paul for doing the filibuster, and even more good for rand paul for pissing off john mccain and Lindsey Graham. How about you, 86655press. We should all thank rand paul. Bill when rand paul i met grassleys chief of staff and he pointed out we should not be asking for memos from the white house about when they can use drones. We should be sending them memos.
