Hollywoods brightest stars gathered in los angeles for the ninetieth annual Academy Awards on sunday the nights big winner was filmmaker guillermo del toros the shape of water which netted him two oscars for best picture and for best director gary oldman picked up his first oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the gritty World War Two drama the darkest hour. And Frances Mcdormand best actress for audience favorite three billboards outside missouri. Well for more on the oscars our film buff scott ross perots with us here hey scott the shape of water was one of the favorite son was nominated thirteen times is this movie in your opinion worthy of receiving the best picture award yeah i think so i mean i thought it was a pretty strong line up this year compared to some previous years where you its obviously one film could win here you had a number of films that could have won best oscar best picture i think shape of water is a worthy winner i mean if you look at the oscar winners in years past they tend to either pick the academy tends to pick either a film that shows sort of the magic of cinema the visual splendor of the sort of fantasy of cinema or they go for a sort of socially aware film that shows the social power that cinema can have and this film kind of does both i mean its a fantasy story its a story of literally official water a. Sort of alien like creature from the deep sea that falls in love with with a woman set in one nine hundred fifty s. American at the height of the cold war. But its also some ways a story about giving voice to the voiceless because the two main characters the female character played by Sally Hawkins is mute she literally cant speak in the time one thousand fifties america where women have politically no voice almost no voice and the other character is this alien creature who cant cant communicate because he cant literally clearly cant speak so its also in some ways. Very socially aware film i think that combination of amazing visuals in this fantasy plus the sort of socially aware message i think that is what. Pulled off the best picture of them it was a powerful film i saw it too i really really enjoyed it lets move on to best actress Frances Mcdormand she took home her second oscar second oscar first one for fargo a long time ago and now decades later she gets a well deserved second oscar one of my favorite actresses she won for three billboards outside. Where she plays a woman whose daughter was brutally murdered she thinks the police arent doing enough to investigate it and so she rents out three billboards outside her home to advertise the fact and to sort of shame the police based on a true story its a very socially aware film that maybe that was one of the reasons that she won but its also a piece tribute to this amazing actress whos always gone her own way and she pulled off what i think was the moment of the night of the oscar ceremony when she got her oscar she accepted the award she put it down and then she called on all the female nominees in all categories to stand up and celebrate with her i think we have fact left that really was the the moment of the night when we take a look. If i may be so honored to have all the female nominees in every category stand with me in this room tonight the out there only if you do it everybody else will come on. To the right. Part of the earth the earth the earth the roof the roof. Worth. Branscombe i think that a great thing she then called on everyone else into the room you know Business People who finance movies of all there in the room saying instead of just playing lip service to me too into diversity when you start financing our movies call us up next week after weve had our Party Tonight call us up and and finance our projects and i think that was sort of the message of the night it was a message of diversity and inclusion which has been obviously at the forefront of everybodys mind since the movement started but here it was about going further than Just Lip Service and mild political activism to take real steps to change how hollywood works ok thats best actress best actor gary oldman in the darkest hour not a surprise no i mean a great great actor. Previously oscar nominated has been sort of the top of his game for decades now playing Winston Churchill in a big historic epic this is the kind of role that always wins a best actor oscar is well deserved he really inhabits Winston Churchill in this film he disappears behind the make up and costume not my favorite film i have to say but definitely worth watching just for gary oldman performance i think in this case it was also the academy honoring a guy amazing british actor who he probably should have given an oscar to a decade or two ago now theyre finally catching up and giving it to him for this but as i say well deserved performance and you know miles above most other most other actors ok we saw we saw Frances Mcdormand lobbying for. Women in getting recognition what about the me too debate and the whole Sexual Harassment discussion has been going on in hollywood did that put its mark on these oscars yet very much so i mean that was the theme going through the entire evening as i said not so much that was averted we saw the Golden Globes everyone wearing black in protest in solitary of Meta Movement that didnt happen this time this time the emphasis was much more at the oscars on concrete movements concrete things that can be done theres this new movie called times up that was started in hollywood to food theyve raised twenty one Million Dollars for Legal Support for women whove been harassed things like that those are the steps that are now taking place in hollywood after france was born dormant got her oscar she said we should have a rider on all contracts that requires every film made in hollywood to have a diversity clause in it so that we have a Diverse Group making the film from the camera and behind the camera make those the kind of steps theyre now taking place and maybe this oscars will be the last one where ill be completely dominated by by white men ok scott roxboro a film buff thanks so much and now lets take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world today Australian Cardinal George Pell has appeared before a Melbourne Court at the start of hearings into Sexual Harassment abuse allegations against him hell is the most Senior Member of the Catholic Church to face charges judges will determine of the next several weeks if theres enough evidence to put him on trial the u. Well italian voters have delivered a Hung Parliament election sunday setting the stage for political gridlock that could take months to resolve voters opted for anti establishment parties and the far right dumping the Current CenterLeft Administration into third place the poor results for centrist parties means that whichever coalition emerges from this ballot if any it will certainly wont be pro european will be testing the murky waters of italian politics this morning with our correspondent in rome but first this report. Italys voters have spoken according to projections the clear loser in these parliamentary elections the establishment. The five Star Movement led by thirty one year old luigi demaio was the Biggest Single Party winner on the day. Its Anti Corruption message resonated with voters especially in the impoverished south. That you know. One thing is certain from these preliminary results the five Star Movement will be the pillar of the next legislature. And the biggest block of votes went to a right Wing Coalition between former Prime MinisterSilvio Berlusconis fortes a. And the anti immigrant league that regardless of their strong showing its unlikely that five star or the conservatives will achieve the necessary majority to govern outright. Reeling from rising anti immigrant sentiment in a struggling economy the Ruling Democratic Party and its center Left Coalition had a poor showing coming in third. Barring any surprises with the final ballot counts the country looks headed for a Hung Parliament this will likely mean weeks of tough negotiations to hammer out a governing coalition. Glasses joins us now from rome georg this election result is a bit of a political earthquake what does it tell us about the countrys political trajectory it will still take a couple of hours until we have official results but what we can already say is that more than fifty percent of the italians have voted for populist parties and this gives you a taste of the kind of desperation of the italian voter they have tried the center right they have tried the center left and now they have opted for someone new someone was zero experience the five Star Movement for instance or the leader nort to populist parties we have all the big winners of this election the big losers are the established parties of a Battle School need and deal runs. So what are the prospects of any of these parties coming together to actually form a government. Of the five Star Movement is now about to become the single Biggest Party in this race but they have not enough votes to reach a majority by themselves now the problem is they have ruled out coalition so far but if they would opt for a coalition if you go by the money fast though a likely party could be the Northern League a league of material salvini of homophobic anti immigrant euro skeptic a politician who has come out very strongly in fact went past a Battle School me in this in the center right coalition and is now the Strongest Force in that coalition if they would team up together they could form a government guarantee thats the only option the only thing is that i talked to the leader of the five Star Movement reach of the myall only a couple of days ago and he made very clear to me this is he said categorically no to such a coalition he said the real threat for europe the real threat for italy are far right parties of the sorts of Marine Le Pen the german a. S. T and then he specifically named. As a threat to italy just briefly georg how will italy be governed then through what could be a sustained period of political limbo. For the italian president could decide that the ball attention loney the current Prime Minister just remains in place in other words a caretaker government that could run its elite and what is now the needed many say is is another Electoral Reform that two three four in the system and make it more possible to bring out one strong force that it has been reformed in the past in a way to avoid a success of the five Star Movement but now this is came back like a boomerang to all the other parties because now no one is the Strongest Force in italy carrick thank you very much. Is there in rome. When rome finally manages to get a government if it manages to get a government its going to have to come to terms with some rather difficult economic problems when it has more were going to be talking about this for the next weeks if not months terry forming coalition could take a lot of wrangling and that means the city could be facing the prospect of entering a period of deep Political Uncertainty which of course could then on the European Union as a choice in which its financial reforms we want to new government in rome will have a lot to do when it comes to making sure that a city remains an attractive place to do business so we caught up with some Company Found his in milan to find out what they say they need to make their businesses thrive. Hes a man with a mission you know and the store Matteo Esposito makes software that allows supermarkets to go online in three d. His technology is a world Market Leader its just that not many know about it and thats partly to do with where he is you know immediately when youre talking about food safe and design or hes ok when youre talking about technology. Is different he also says the internet is still far too slow in many italians regions just like the countrys bureaucracy but no ones taking the initiative to change things here the taxation is high and its difficult to to raise funding since so maybe our counties that are more profitable have more of them more easy then. In the world banks doing business index italy ranks lower than romania but some hope to change that especially in milan the countrys commercial center. Its the home of one of europes biggest Digital AssetManagement Companies money farm. Founder Paolo Goldfine inhales the labor market reforms of recent years he says his city is leading the way when it comes to showing italy how to leave its economic malaise behind. Is becoming more kind of an examples that the rest of the thirty two just like copy and moving in that direction saw i perceive me. As a more as a leader rather than a call back by the overall situation that overall situation is still very difficult italys economy is growing slightly again but the people arent feeling it more than ten percent of italian still have no job millions live in poverty theres deep rooted anger at the italian establishment. But gelfand he says he hasnt given up on italy even if it has a lot of catching up to do the United States can have a meeting in twenty four hours when i can have a yes or nor in two days and here maybe i take weeks or months or so i see this gap. But i dont feel stuck in the here im proud to be here it may be a bumpy road ahead but more and more italians now say they want things to change over one idea that one a lot of voters was the idea of a universal basic income that was put forward by a euro skeptic five Star Movement which pulled well in the elections i was financial analyst if he thought it was doable. Well when we had France Elections last year in the pen the populistic candidate talked about a thirty week work or thirty hour working week and also about basic income. It is feasible twenty five years ago if you remember back we talked about computers and role of robots and how much work they can do for us and in the end its not less work today but its its the same amount of work and nothing has changed so basically its possible but it wont be possible for italy alone and wont be possible for the eurozone alone because still we need to compete with asia pacific and we need to compete with the americas and the productivity downtick in europe just because of the basic income would be a bad thing in my opinion briefly you know what should a new governments top economic priorities be. They have been years of austerity now and no take in italy and now they need to have and says of how to print back to italy of how to bring back to the eurozone because in the end its not Italian Solutions alone but it needs to be European Solutions and know and so the new government should have answers to that actually to have an italian answ
