FBC Countdown To The Closing Bell February 25, 2013

Countdown to the countdown. Mastercard launches a new app, kind of a digital wallet. Find out why mastercard could be a gam gamechanger. And some of the money flowing back to shareholders with another increase. The ceo talks was exclusively about 2013. Plus, legendary investor on the market. Stocks are due for a big fall, oil will take a spill, gold will shine once again. Countdown to the closing bell starts right now. Good afternoon, everybody, i am actually webster in this afternoon for liz claman. The last hour of trading and things have deteriorated over the last hour or so. We are bouncing back a little. Most of the dow 30 as you can see is in the red. Mcdonalds one of the key bright spots, verizon endocrine that is walmart. Very few and far between. We are off of the session lows, down 105 points coming back from there down half a percent. The s p down 10 of the nasdaq also up about a third of a percent. You dont need to look any further than the financials, all red, the Market Leader until recently. Todays weakness acrosstheboard, Goldman Sachs up 2 , goldma Morgan Stanley al. Ubs also down over 2 . Gas builders the best performers in 2012, but as you can see red arrow is. Toll brothers all moving down two or 3 today. As for stocks in the skid, volatility is picking up, some analysts predicting, looking for downside protection. The vix jumping almost 8 , up nearly 2. 5 points. Breaking 17 for the first time this year earlier in the session. We have seen that volatility. With market taking a hit, how much of the selling is due to concerns about italy . A stable government. Or is it in the mess in washington . What is it all about . A lot of concerns, lets get to the floor show. Traders at the New York Stock Exchange, cme group, the nymex. Lets begin with ben willis. This isnt all about italy, is it . Ashley, tell you it is a significant portion, but you have to look at the currency play. Starting over in japan, major mover to the upside because of the idea the yen will decrease in value. That is a currency war, that was a good thing for japan, and italy, italy had a good bond auction before the results of the election came out. Only aided a situation that actually helped the euro somewhat and have the dollar under pressure. The index little bit more heavily weighted than the euro. The United States had our own little session. He took a very hard line on the sequester issue and his believe what will happen, and here we are. A great indication of the money flow the last 10 days. Professional investors say this market will pull back so the vix going up. The consumer staple goods and Utility Group are seeing money, actual money from those that you are hearing about leaving the bond market, coming at the intoe safety of those particular stock deals. Ashley there you go. Lets go to scott at the cme. How is the strong dollar played out at the cme today . Speak would have helped the bond market. We have been talking for weeks about ultimately we will see the rates go higher, and that is some of the dollars telling us that but the e trad easy trade e to go stocks. But the bond markets are rallying, and we will see the tenyear get to 1. 5 before 2. 5. We will have bad Economic News lealeadin to the market in more work to do before we see the rates turnaround. I dont think the equity will tell you anything going on, that is the hocuspocus markets. That is going to be where we are going in the future. Ashley grab some more safe haven. Lets go to the nynex. Talking about natural gas, a bump in natural gas, what is going on . You have an expiration tomorrow, the options, and adjusted weather patterns throughout the u. S. Coming here, forecast really making people get out probably a little bit earlier than they thought. With natural gas is essentially will be that high. Topping out at 250, and we will go down from there. Ashley let me finish very quickly on the hocuspocus equity markets. Obviously all eyes on washington, to pierce the automatic spending cuts will kick in, if at all ready in the market . I would not be surprised to see an equity market rally. It is funny to hear from the hocuspocus as ben bernanke has been inflating the bubble in the bond market so we will see how long the hocuspocus stays in that market. Ashley very good, the phrase of the day. Thank you for joining us for todays floor show. Really appreciate it. The World Congress kicking off in barcelona, the top priority for many companies, mobile payments. You can hear a lot about it if you havent already. Encouraging customers to throw away the plastic, massacre unveiling new Digital Payment system, masterpass. Joining us, president of international market. Thank you very much for being here. I guess the key is speed and convenience when it comes to paying. You have masterpass, what does it do, what does it enable the consumer to do . Basically it brings together a sho seamless shopping experie. It is going to be all the same experience, it is something companies are going to love and feel very different. Ashley how does it work . It brings together commerce in one space. It is not mobile or ecommerce, it is using mastercard very secure network. We are in 216 countries in the world now bringing all that safety and security to the fingertip of the consumer wherever they are. Ashley dimension security, we have had reports almost daily. How do you go about making sure to your customers that their information up floating around in the sky and around us is safe . It is safe because there are multiple levels of security across the networks, across the devices. People have said will it be more secure on my mobile phone, the same as using a piece of plastic and the answer is yes, it is secure because you will have pin numbers, all the authentication used today, and i dont know about you, but if i suddenly lose my phone, i know within minutes and probably much faster than other things you may misplay. Consumers, 85 of the world transactions are done by paper and that includes cash, checks and that is not a very secure way to pay. Ashley people still write checks . Unfortunately they do a lot in america. If you go out into the emerging market, place like africa, cash up in the 90s and sways across russia. The mobile commerce will allow us to replace cash and create financial inclusions. Ashley what about emergence . What are the face of this technology . It is not a huge cost, there is infrastructure costs to allow the structure to have capabilities in store, but itll be a benefit by being able to talk to consumers, you can have coupons, to be a very different experience. Ashley 60 comes outside the United States, where are you seeing the most growth . Where are you seeing the best growth . We are seeing great growth around asia. We are seeing huge growth in africa because we have opened up in the south of sahara area, and also seeing brazil powering on, the Largest Company for our business outside america. Ashley you mentioned china, russia, the inaccessible places. How do you reach potential customers . Obviously we work through the banks and people like the post office in russia, there is in other areas. And the advent of mobile brings a new space to russia because in russia have people still paying their utility bills and believe me, minus 23 outside come you dont want to be doing that to the advent of mobile commerce will change life. Ashley we are already out of time, thank you for being here. Very interesting. Thank you so much. The closing bell will be ringing in 50 minutes from now. A few nuggets on his relationship with a former top prosecutor. Charlie gasparino has all the details. What should you be doing with your money with stocks at a fiveyear high read he has seen his share of market cycles. See where he sees opportunity in 2013 and sectors to avoid straight ahead on fox business. Friday night, buddy. You are gonna need a wingman. And my cash back keeps the party going. But my Airline Miles take it worldwide. [ male announcer ] it shouldnt be this hard. With creditcards. Com, its easy to search hundreds of cards and apply online. Creditcards. Com. Ashley the power mover of the hour is barnes and noble. Shares jumping today. Shares up about 11 , not a bad move on heavy volume. They want to buy the bookstore chains Retail Assets using mostly cash, price tag, to be determined. If a deal takes place it will not include ereader. Or the College Business either. They will remain part of a Standalone Public Company but the stock reacting today. He controls 30 of barnes noble outstanding share. Investors are cautious ahead of fridays sequestration deadline with the play happen. Some of what is moving today. Sandra smith at the cme chicago, lets begin with nicole, what a wild day it has been. Nicole we started off to see it sell off. Go into the last hour of trading getting closer to the closing bell. They look at webmd. You think of Online Medical site. 6. 3 . Raymond james talking positively calling it a strong buyout saying they change the way they appeal to consumers and answer those questions and it is actually quite lucrative to them. The stock up over 50 in 2013, and yet we are seeing it up again, and they are putting their money into calling it a strong buy. That is what we are looking at here at the New York Stock Exchange. Ashley sandra smith at the cme, talking about the strong dollar all day, what impact has that had on your trading at the cme . Sandra it brought the Energy Prices down. Afternoon trading, Oil Prices Back in 93 per barrel. It wasnt too long ago we were nearing 100 pai 100 per barre. For wholesale gasoline prices are coming down a bit. Getting hopes the pump prices will come down. It is a precious metal complex, silver prices up a couple on the session, gold prices up a full percent. The biggest gain in three weeks, lots of the Central Banks adding to the reserves pumping up demand and pushing the Prices Higher. Ashley thank you, guys. Dont miss countdown to the closing bell tomorrow at 3 00 p. M. Eastern. Liz claman will be live from the cme in chicago herself. And after the bell, liz claman will have an interview with the acting treasury secretary. Hank greenberg back with a new book and interesting denial about his relationship with a former top prosecutor. Charlie gasparino has the latest with the juicy details. Charlie it should be on foxbusiness. Com, on my twitter page, but i will give you some of the highlights. Aig, people forget was basically created by hank. I forget the gentlemans name. The first, i guess the guy who invented aig, but he built his into what was the Largest Company in the world before he was ousted in 2005 by coronation of his board and Eliot Spitzer doing so with some accounting. We should point out those charges have dissipated since. He has written a book about his experience at aig why he was thrown out, said he was thrown out, what the board did wrong and what happened with aig after that. Between 20052008, aig tripled the amount of risk he took in the derivatives business. I should say doubled, thats destroyed the company, took a massive government bailout. He is suing the government. Just destroyed shareholders, there were other ways to open up the discount window like he did for banks. But they basically bailed it out totally screwed over the shareholders, he was one of the major shareholders and said if you really look at this, and i believe this to be the case, the troubles with aig started by getting rid of you. He was a better manager because they went nuts with it. He left, he was forced out by Eliot Spitzer. There were accounting irregularities. And so knowing that, bigtime urban legend for years, he became governor and he resigned involved in a prostitution scandal. Everybody thinks Hank Greenberg basically blew the whistle, hired a private investigator, and serious it is hard to get caught from hiring a hooker from the high up escort service. He got a good chuckle. It is all one the air, all on foxbusiness. Com. The story goes on further it was hank and others, all of these people. Or they were involved in it. A crazy interview with cnbc that i helped set up suggesting he knew about the hookers before hand. In any event, he says no way, jose. He thinks he was drawing money out of the bank in certain quantities. The cops looked at it and traced the money trail. It was some name like that. It made careers for ashley dupree. Ashley of course, household name. What i have read about her, she is happily married now. Ashley good for her. How much detail does hank give away now . Charlie i did not read the whole book. If you are in to corporate history, which i am now. Is a lot of detailed how it was created, what went out, what went on. Here is maybe the drawback with all of these books written by ceos, dont expect him to say, it is his view, he doesnt take a lot of blame. I would say in retrospect, some reviews are very tough. They thought it should be in the fiction section. I will say this, i know if hank was in there, the risk taking would have not gone to that extent. It is what has destroyed the company. It wouldnt have been destroyed. Ashley charlie gasparino, interesting stuff. The closing bell ringing in 37 minutes or thereabouts. Warren buffett recently teamed up to buy heinz. Will we see other megadeals taking place . Former campbell chief director weighs in on that and a whole lot more in a fox business exclusive. Ashley lets take a look at your fox Business Market check. Consumer staples the best performing sector last week and the trend seems to be continuing looking for places to find some shelter as the rest of the market falls look at the consumer staple names hitting record highs today, some up, some down. Definite Consumer Staples right there. The heinz buyout has been on everybodys radar. Wondering are there more deals on the horizon . More consolidation. Joining us for New York Stock Exchange and a fox business exclusive, former Campbell Soup ceo. Doug conant. It has been interesting month for the Food Industry. We saw the heinz deal, is there more consolidation in the near future . I think it is like an accordion, we see some consolidation and we see Companies Like kraft breaking apart. Were fighting an optimal way to find value in a tough market. We will find some companies being created as more focus group companies. There is no onesizefitsall strategy. Ashley campbell has always been considered a very nice fix with heinz, is that still a possibility . Im no longer part of the campbells organization, so i couldnt comment on it. Campbells is very happy doing what they are doing independently and i expect it will continue to be independent. Ashley all right. Look, your time at campbell, which i know youre a former campbell ceo, but you managed to turn that company around, when you took it over it was struggling, how did you do that . What are the keys looking back to turning the company around . The key was to get a focused strategy, shed assets instead of consolidating and get our people highly engaged in our work. As we created a more inviting culture, we attracted better people infected better products over the decade through sales and earnings every year cant return on Investment Capital up to 27 , built the marketplace in the four categories secondtonone and we had a great run, a great ticket. Decade. Now she has to have her run for the next decade, and she will. Ashley part of that strategy is a dual mandate, strengthen your core, your core Customer Base but you also have to try to reach new markets, something that could have an impact on the margins. How do you balance that . There is a science and an art to all of this. You cant have leaky buckets in your business. You can lose more in the core you can ever track from new markets. You have to build the core, you should be very selective about how you can want the newmarket because it is highly secretive, high risk and you can do it thoughtfully, but it is no sure thing. The food business is tremendously mature. You have to question if you can get a good return on that investment. You have to do that very cautiously. Ashley the Food Industry has seen a shift toward prepackaged meals on the go. Does this for somebody like campbell to readjusted their product line . Every companies try to stay in step with consumer trends, campbell had a tremendous acquisition. The largest they have had in decades. Making fresh carrots and distributes them and fresh juices. So they are not missing that trend at all. Ashley very good. International Corporate Philanthropy day. Why is it so important for corporations to be corporate, good corporate citizens, why is it important to you . It is important to me, but more important to the businesses and the shareholders themselves. Our customers and our Consumers Want to work with a company and buy from companies that are transparent, there to Serve Society as well as their own economic interest, it is the price, you have to be engaged helping to build a better world while you are also creating economic value for your shareholders. You really dont have a choice anymore. We have 180 ceos of fortune 500 Companies Part of the committee encouraging Corporate Philanthropy. And we are championing this notion of building a better world and a Better Company at the same time. I saw terrific examples today everywhere from ibm, xerox, it is happening all around us and we have to find a way to tell the story. Ashley thank you so much for joining us. The former ceo of Campbell Soup. We really appreciate
