This is a complicated situation, and i believe the administrations policy on sanctions has been solid. Not great, not terrible. Of the military side of the administrations policies have been a mistake. There is no question in my mind that we should have been providing military equipment to the ukrainians back in late march or early april, antitank, antiaircraft, and equipment designed to help them secure their border because this is a russianled, finance, and supplied insurgency which would die within a week or two of the russian border was sealed. The Ukrainian Military<\/a> has demonstrated over the past six weeks that it has the competence to clean up if russia does not escalate intervention. Unfortunately due to weakness on the west mr. Putin believes that he can get away with this without facing severe sanctions. That is the chief problem. Lou of similarly, the europeans have been no more to put it this way discipline during vigorous in their response than the Obama Administration<\/a>. Yet we also have reports that Russian Forces<\/a> are once again on the move to ukraines east preparing for what could be another incursion. Again, the United States<\/a> now still lacking the wherewithal and has not provided the Ukrainian Government<\/a> further argument or weaponry to withstand an assault from Russian Forces<\/a>. I would distinguish between sanctions and military supplies in the Obama Administration<\/a> policy. The sanctions the administration put down on wednesday were strong. They should have been put down in late june. That would have been a deterrence to putin two weeks ago there were adequate. The problem is europeans have been much weaker. The Obama Administration<\/a> would like to have sanctions along with europe. They would be stronger, but europe has been reluctant. It is possible the shootdown of the airliner may change european opinion, but that is not certain. My view is that we can on our own put down punishing sanctions. If we provide dollar transactions with russian institutions the europeans would have to go along. Lou i know of no case where economic sanctions have been determined of political outcome, geopolitical outcome and, in the course of my career in journalism. I understand the hope and i understand the wishes and i understand the accommodations and the countervailing influence is that lead to that, but the reality is putin is not a man that strikes me as one who would be persuaded by economic sanctions. He has demonstrated over the past three months the ability to make tactical concessions to avoid punishing sanctions. My view is that we put down a serious marker last night that there will be sanctions against entire sectors of the russian economy. Unfortunately when the deadline passed there is not a word about sanctions which in bold some speed if we may clear, strong economic sanctions that think there is a good chance, not a certainty, but a good chance that putin would retreat. In fact, he has taken several steps of the past two weeks to open up line of retreat in terms of statements made in the kremlin talking about the feasibility. Lou please come back. President obama always so eager to a stand before cameras and microphones uttering not a word about the issue of greatest importance to both europe and the middle east, instead giving notice of the extension of the iranian talks in much the same way as the administration grudgingly dumps regulatory documents pertaining to all of those white house scandals on a friday evening without a word of notice, no explanation by the president or his administration.
