Good morning to you. The president has a couple of things on his schedule today. He will swear in a new hhs secretary and have lunch with members of the United NationsSecurity Council but much of today will be dedicated and devoted to getting ready for tomorrow nights state of the Union Address. He will do runthroughs of the speech to get more detail whether on teleprompter and as tradition typically holds with president s theyll be doing it in the theater which gives the president the idea of talking to an audience. He spent much of the weekend working on the state of the Union Address that falls into five broad themes. Jobs and the economy, infrastructure, immigration, trade, national security. The immigration piece the president will pressure democrats to cut a deal on daca, the wall will be front and center in that negotiation according to white house officials. The president s wants 25 billion in total for Border Security, 20 billion of which dedicated to build the wall. In exchange the president is offering a 10 to 12 year path to citizenship for 1. 8 million socalled dreamers. The Principal Deputy press secretary today. The president has come forward and offered a 10 to 12 year pathway to citizenship to people brought here illegally as minors. Thats reaching across the aisle and in exchange he is looking for real Border Security and reforms to our Legal Immigration system. White house Officials Say the tone of the speech will be very forwardlooking and the president will offer it in a spirit of bipartisanship. That may be difficult to achieve and no word on whether the president , as tradition has held in the past, will travel across the country post state of the union to try to sell his policies to middle america. Up until probably the end of last week the white house was optimistic that negotiations on daca were progressing. That both sides were coming to a better understanding of each others positions. Checked with a white house official and was told both sides are holding in their corners to see where its going. Potential legislation should be out later this week. Democratic leadership is saying the president s initial proposal the 1. 8 million path to citizenship in exchange for border wall, end to chain migration and end to the visa lottery system is a nonstarter. Nancy pelosi went so far last friday to say that the president s program was racist which brought a sharp reaction from shaw this morning. The president put forth a plan and let me just say what i said last night. That plan is a campaign to make America White again. I dont really take Nancy Pelosis words all that seriously. The New York Times is reporting this morning secret memo hits a new republican target Rob Rosenstein and carter page who was under some level of surveillance. Whats significant about that . The story about that is when the government applies for this warrant to spy on someone its for a finite period of time, about 90 days. So the theory here is that perhaps the Obama Administration got a warrant to spy on carter page, the 90day period overlapped into the Trump Administration and then the Trump Administration renewed or extended that warrant to spy on carter page. But all of this is talk about whats in a classified memo that people have not seen so i think what you heard from representative gowdy a second ago is that it probably covers a lot more than just this warrant issue. Bill you make it clear in your piece thats online in the Washington Examiner now that the next 72 hours are critical. What transpires over three days then . Now im thinking more in terms of delays. It is possible that in this meeting tonight the committee could vote to release the memo. That would begin a process. I think two things to look for. One throughout the course of the day look for sort of lastditch efforts by the Justice Department to try to get the committee to put off that vote. Not sure that will be successful but i think theyll try. Then after that we know the president wants this memo released. But perhaps the white house will take some process that takes a few days to review it. So theoretically it could come out tonight but also be a few more days. Bill well wait for more. Nancy pelosi said that this immigration idea is going to make America White again. Joe manchin, the democrat from West Virginia was asked about that specifically on sunday and said this. We dont need that type of rhetoric on either side from nancy, paul ryan or anybody else. I come down this, the president has laid out a template. We are going to look at that template and work with it. Bill you put those two together and there could be a split within the party. Thats a preview of the debate inside the Democratic Party thats coming up over immigration after the state of the union. And i think that the problem for some democrats like nancy pelosi is that some of the president s proposals like making the immigration system more meritbased or getting rid of the visa lottery actually have pretty broad substantial majority support in the public. But these differences are really real. Joe manchin represents a state, West Virginia, that donald trump won by 42 points.
