Rachel and joey jones is live from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel<\/a> and joined by former new York City Fire<\/a> commissioner sal casas doe. Joey, good morning. Yeah, good morning, guys. Listen, i feel like the suns going to peep out, i think were going to have a Chamber Of Commerce<\/a> day, i really do. Sals not only a former new York City Fire<\/a> commissioner, but also a board member of tunnel to towers. You know, we get to spend time together every year out here for this event, and i was reading some of your notes. You know, one thing you point out is in the aftermath of 9 11, it unit wasnt just the heroics, but losing almost 350 firemen, you had to continue on, continue to service the city with fire service and ems. Tell me a little bit about what that was like, to see Men And Women<\/a> step up to fill that void. It was amazing, joey. It was, you know, we were devastated. We lost 343 members. 6000 children were orphaned 600 children lost their dads, and we had to attend memorial services, attend funerals, still tend to the business. We had to make sure the city was safe, rebuild downtown new york. And people had to step up way before they thought they would have to, and they all did. They worked countless hours, took tyke away from their families to rebuild the city and the department. So much of this event and the tunnel to Towers Foundation<\/a> celebrates Men And Women<\/a> that served in combat, lost legs, lost their spouse, gold star wiveses, but a big a part of it too is supporting First Responders<\/a>. Both of my brothersinlaw have been firemen for more than 20 years, and i always think back to the fact when the they go to dinner with their family, theyre driving through their battle feel. And New York City<\/a> became a battlefield for First Responders<\/a> that day. How important is it to have an event like this to memorialize them . I think it shows the the members of the department that if something happens to you, were going to take care of your families. When i starlet thed as a young firefighter in 1969, the first thing i was told was if something happens to you, were going to take care of your family. That makes you want to work, you work harder for it, and you know somewhere down the line you may have to pay that forward. Taking care of the families of the fallen. You know, we say all the time that our country came together on september 12th, 2001, and sometimes we feel like we lost that. But when you have 40,000 people show up today in the rain to run this 5k in support of tunnel to towers and also in support of patriotism, that makes you feel like were still a patriotic country. So we havent lost it. You come to new york, you know that September 11th<\/a> affected all of us. It didnt stop on September 11th<\/a>, we just lost our 343rd member yesterday to World Trade Center<\/a> illness, is so it continues. But people are here to support us, tunnel to towers supports our First Responders<\/a> and veterans like no other organization. We went back to hawaii this last week, and i had the privilege of sitting down with a man who drove his water truck throughout the night to save lives. Seven or eight hours. The fire is, like, already about 50 feet away from me, and its coming fast. Dark, black smoke and fire mixed together. And its not like coming vertical, but its leaning with the wind. And its making even harder. There was [inaudible] hanging on top, and i just drag them along the way. I know theres people out there that needs help, and i have the water truck to do it. And it just, im like, god, just, just work through me and guide me in there. Will how many people do you think it was that a in the end you escorted out of lahaina . 16 or 17 people. Will and how many trips was that . Five trips. The heaviest part of my rescue was i saw one little girl, she was still breathing, but she cant hang on, you know . And i held that little girl on my arms, and she looked at me and that was it. I couldnt save that kid, but i was able to save a couple more kids. There was four teenagers that a happened to be tourists. They were running, looking for way out. You know . I only have this little bit of water in my tank. Its pretty much for me to get me out of the fire. So what i did, i sacrificed that water for those teenagers. Will whey did you want to tell me why did you want to tell me your story . Because theres a lot of crazy, crazy conspiracy out there, you know . About people talking about the laser beam and all of that. And none of thats true. Pretty much blaming the cops. The cops really, they do their best, you know . They do their best and the firefighters. Will i think when people dont have information if they dont understand, they do fill it with other information. So you saw is, your experience is, what . That amidst chaos, everyone was doing their best . That that perhaps mistakes were made . Yes. Everyone do their part. But things just happened so quick. So you cant really, like, you know, plant things plan things ahead and bring more water trucks or more cops to help people get out of there, you know . It just happened so quick. And people just abandoned their cars on the road. Will there has been some questions, why couldnt people get off of front street . Was what you saw that people abandoned cars at some point, ran from their cars, and that made it so cars behind couldnt get out . Yes, correct. And, you know, people pretty much panic. Those conspiracy if going to end up divide us. I want people of lahaina to know that were the one we see every day from day one. I was here for a reason and god placed me here for a reason. Before my mom passed away to cancer, that was october of last year, her last words to me was dont leave maui. Maybe she knew that something was going to happen and that im the right guy with for the job. Will it was rachel wow. Will when you do interviews sometimes, and this one actually felt more like therapy. Id never met him before, but i know a i mutual friend, they said he needs to get this off his chest, its weighing on him. And whats weighing on him is he told you about the little girl that died in his arms. He said i left her in the city ors, i had to move on to getting other people. He goes, i have nightmares about that because thats to not what you should do, shouldnt leave even a body behind, is how he feels today. Of course, theres no Backseat Driving<\/a> in a situation like that. Rachel its this whole piece is such a reminder that we cant forget because the traumas real. Will oh, man. Rachel its going to be there for a long time. From your going back this last time, you brought supplies, what kind of Mental Health<\/a> services are going to maui . Will there were people on that flight we did yesterday we talked about for therapists, and theyre trying to to train 500 locals to do, to teach people there to do therapy. A lot of people ask me, hey, will, youre doing these local Human Interest<\/a> stories, where are you on getting to the bottom of it. I do the think there were a lot of political decisions that contributed to making this happen, and ive talked about that. But he did want to do this because he said, listen, there was no laser beam that a started this pete no, there are actual will theres theories on the internet. Theres not 2,000 kids missing, the kids were from the School System<\/a>, because the School System<\/a> is kind of gone. The cops didnt intentionally barricade people in own. They said all those cops, those firefighters, theyre victims. So im just here to tell you, thats a man who was literally in the smoke and fire, and thats his truth. Its not my job to tell you what other people are telling you, im just telling you i know that person has direct, firsthand experience.
