responded. should there be indigenous people's day? join us on facebook. it's #keeptalking. >> have a great day. bye. good morning. it is monday, october 6, 2014. we start with a fox news alert. the american journalist inl fected with ebola is -- infected with ebola is on his way to the united states as the president looks into extra screening to add to our airports. should he be allowing people from ebola-stricken countries into the u.s. in the first place? we report, you decide. >> never let a crisis go to waste. van jones found a strategy to help democrats win this november. >> this ebola thing is the best argument you can make. >> this ebola thing is the best argument you can make. we're going to tell you what m jones is saying straight ahead. >> don't give away too much, steve. vice president joe biden
was busy this weekend apologizing, once on saturday and once on sunday as well. and he's got somebody else to talk to and apologize to. he doesn't have time for that. too bad it is not a three-day weekend. and it is nothing to laugh about. on a positive note, mornings are better with friends. >> hello. this is valerie harper and you are watching "fox & friends." >> thank you, rhoda, one of our pals from tv land. welcome folks. another busy week from the news station. >> we thank you for being with us this morning. a lot to bring you. >> let's begin, a fox news alert. another possible case of ebola popping up now in delaware as the c.d.c. continues to say we will stop the deadly virus, and in just a few hours an american journalist infected with the deadly disease lands in nebraska for treatment.
peter doocy live with the latest. >> reporter: that american camera man who got ebola while on assignment is on his way back to the united states. doctors in nebraska and omaha are expecting him three and a half hours from now. back east in dover, delaware, an elementary school aged student from liberia is in isolation at bay health kent general hospital with ebola-like symptoms. the hospital says they are following c.d.c. guidelines and they called the c.d.c. but were told not to worry. here's why. quote, the child is past the 21-day maximum incubation period and it has been determined by the c.d.c. thalt likelihood of -- that the likelihood of ebola infection is extremely low. since the likelihood is low, the c.d.c. declined to test this child for ebola. meanwhile the man in dallas with ebola, thomas duncan, was downgraded this weekend from serious to critical condition but the c.d.c. has had their so-called
disease doctors retracing his steps and they think they can stop ebola here. >> the core of control is identifying everyone who might have had contact with them and making sure they're monitored for 21 days, and if they develop symptoms immediately isolating them to break the chain of transmission. there's no doubt that we can stop ebola in this country. >> that man, the c.d.c. director, dr. tom free freeden will brief president obama with the latest details about the outbreak. >> it is curious, one of the administration is considering change to the airport screening at a number of the hubs in this country where a lot of people from west africa come into, and they may have been listening to this program. one of the suggestions one of you e-mailed us is why don't they take the
temperatures as people get off the airplane. now it sounds like in a certain number of hubs they might do that. they might ask people questions about whether or not they had contact with anybody who might have ebola? as we learned from mr. duncan who lied on his declaration application in liberia, it just takes a lie to keep it going. >> it's an interesting move if the c.d.c. does get in there with questioning and reenforcement at airport hubs. prior to this last week, the c.d.c. was saying we're perfectly comfortable with the standards that are there. we're doing everything we can. this marks really an indication that perhaps the standards that were were not enough. >> i wouldn't mind testing over there. that would certainly, if it's possible manpower wise. let's talk about what this means politically. mid terms are coming up. a lot of people look at ebola and think if you can get this under control who looks good and who looks bad? and can you imagine if the government was shut down?
those are the thought patterns of george -- van jones with george stephanopoulos. >> you've got to start putting republicans on the defensive for the fact that they believe you can take a wrecking ball to the american government, never pay a price. obamacare means eight million people that couldn't have gone to the doctor last year, if they want to today they can go see the doctor. the democrats have to start talking like that. >> in september the president went down to visit the c.d.c. and said it lacks like we got this thing under control. is it? when it came to quarantine the family of mr. duncan or his girlfriend and those with him, how is that quarantine going when they sat in a dirty room day after day? if you want to put the spotlight on the c.d.c., to be kind you can say the jury is still out. >> you could say the government could perhaps get a handle on it. >> but to get votes for it? >> when you look at isis,
terrorism, the i.r.s. and their scandals, these are things the government has not handled so well. when you look at veterans affairs. i don't necessarily think many americans -- let us know what you think -- feel differently when it comes to handling ebola and the capability of our government. >> our next guest is going to tell us about how people have lost trust in government, and this could not come at a worse time because the government is saying trust us. >> there was another beheading on friday. news a forest ranger who was taken hostage has been threatened by isis. his parents were told by a former hostage that their son had converted to islam when he shared a cell with a syrian muslim last year and since then the familiar released a letter where the son says he is afraid to die but he is at peace with conversion to islam. >> he fought for the army
rangers, decides to give back, is captured in october of 2013, and now it looks as though, sadly, they seem to behead their victims and then tell us a month later. so this could be a done deal with the cab driver from britain, that's exactly what eyewitnesses said happened. >> too many of these videos we've seen action this came with a message directly to the president, keep on striking our people we'll strike the next one yours. the f.b.i. director discussed exactly what this means because we keep hearing al qaeda is on the run but according to his words, this is the director of the f.b.i., that is not so. >> how would you describe the terrorist networks in syria as they exist now? >> they're a product of what i describe as the me metasasis of al qaeda.
one is al-nusra. they present different threats in a lot of ways. >> is this as dangerous a time as al qaeda at its peak? >> no, i don't think so. >> what's different? >> we are better organized as an intelligence community. we're better organized and equipped at the border. we have relationships with our foreign partners, all of which make us better able to see dots and connect dots. the transformation since before 9/11 is striking. >> it is striking. if you watch that profile -- and it is two parts. there will be another one next week. you'll see that the guy who runs our f.b.i. knows what he's doing. it was a great profile of a great public servant. >> right. i agree with everything except the border. if you talk to people at the border no one seems to feel secure. >> but that's political. >> but that's safety. if you wanted him to be candid, i don't know how he could look at the border and talk to the people in arizona and texas and
california -- although san diego made improvements -- and think the border is actually better and make us feel better about it. the other thing important to point out is so far the operations against those horrible people that metasized al qaeda has not produced significant results. >> now they've started to use helicopters against isis which is completely different. meanwhile let's talk a little bit about our number-two man in the united states, joe biden. on saturday he had to apologize to the country of turkey. then on sunday he had to apologize to the united arab emirates after he said this on thursday at harvard at the kennedy school. listen. >> the turks were great friends and i have a great relationship with [inaudible] which i spent a lot of time with. the saudis, the emirates, et cetera. what were they doing? they were so determined to
take down assad and essentially is a proxy sunni-shia war, what do they do? they poured hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of tons of weapons into anyone who would fight against assad, except that the people who were being, who were being supplied were al-nusra and al qaeda and the extremist elements of jihadists coming from other parts of the world. >> i don't know if he's not telling the truth. it sounds, that's really been the talk and the buzz. but should you be saying that to the kids at harvard knowing how sensitive it is to put together a coalition of 40 countries to do whatever they're doing. >> because they might hear it. >> he's got a microphone. >> this is the problem. he ran out of time, as you noted in our intro today. if he had one more day perhaps he could have finished the apology. >> they did hear loud and
clear. he had the microphone. we've got the internet. we've got television. boom! >> he also said being the vice president is a bitch, also an interesting comment. >> hi guys, good morning. good to see you. that enterovirus has so many parents on edge this morning and here's part of the reason why. the death of a four-year-old new jersey boy is now being blamed on that respiratory disease affecting hundreds of children across the country right now. the medical examiner confirming that ally waller's death -- eli waller's death was directly related to enterovirus 68. another child from eli's school is being tested for that disease. parents scared and also angry that it took ten days for officials to let them know what was going on. >> very scary. i'm very nervous. >> we're very nervous. >> a lot of people kept their children home from school this week.

why do you keep saying yes? >> the numbers are staggering here in the united states. one person is killed in a house fire every three hours. we went to the public fire institute in new jersey for a crash course in responding to a house fire. take a look. >> get out of here as fast as you can and stay as low as you can. >> most people think it can never happen to them until it's too late. a house fire. >> you can feel the heat up there. now when i shoot this guy off over here -- >> senior fire instructor uses controlled flames like these to train volunteer and professional firefighters. how can you protect yourself and your family? aside from having a working smoke alarm, always keep your doors closed at night. >> the smoke will kill you long before the flames ever reach you. the closed door can buy you
three, four, five seven minutes worth of extra time to either be rescued or get out of the building. >> how do you know if it's safe to leave or if this is on the other side of your door? >> i want to make sure to use the back of my hand so i don't burn my palm when i try to open a door. i'm going to need that and go up, make sure it stays cool. you start low because heat rises. try to go as high as you can. if the temperature is okay, then i can test the door knob. when i open, make sure to stand behind the door. >> and low. >> and low as you can get. >> i think i got it. what should you do in the kitchen where 40% of all house fires begin? >> if the oil is on fire, put a lid on top of the frying pan. never use water on grease fires. the grease will react violently with the water and splash. >> in that case, always keep a fire extinguisher near the exit point of main rooms.
make sure you know how to use it. >> first pull the pin. squeeze the handle from the bottom and just point it about four feet away, sweep back and forth across the surface of the fire. >> most importantly, make sure the entire family knows how to escape. >> if they're blocked off, you want to make sure that the children themselves know how to get out of their room. i would suggest that every parent in a home with little children, make them open the window and make sure that they can open it. >> and the number one tip for surviving a house fire? >> get out, stay out. no possessions are worth your life. >> and here are a few more tips. have your furnace checked by a qualified technician and keep portable heaters away from anything flammable like curtains. don't use them to dry your shoes or clothing. >> really interesting stuff. that academy is fantastic. >> that's how they train their firefighters? >> it is. they do learn how to keep all the safety equipment and all that.
>> coming up, maria molina in the next hour has got a big announcement and you'll hear it exclusively right here coming up shortly. in the meantime, donald trump joins us on the other side of a quick timeout. >> that's what he looks like my name's louis, and i quit smoking with chantix. i had tried to do it in the past. i hadn't been successful. quitting smoking this time was different because i talked to my doctor and i... i got a prescription for chantix. along with support, chantix (varenicline) is proven to help people quit smoking. it was important to me that chantix was a non-nicotine pill. the fact that it reduced the urge to smoke helped me get that confidence that i could do it.
some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood, hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. if you notice any of these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away. tell your doctor about any history of mental health problems, which could get worse while taking chantix. don't take chantix if you've had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. if you develop these, stop chantix and see your doctor right away as some can be life-threatening. tell your doctor if you have a history of heart or blood vessel problems, or if you develop new or worse symptoms. get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. use caution when driving or operating machinery. common side effects include nausea, trouble sleeping and unusual dreams. i am very proud. i love myself as a nonsmoker. ask your doctor if chantix is right for you.

medical center. to this point his family thinks he's been in good hands. in fact, the same group from doctors without borders that took care of another american with ebola, dr. richard sakra, have been watching over him ever since his diagnosis. also here in the states, in dover, delaware, a young child from liberia is now in isolation at bay health kent general hospital with ebola-like symptoms. the hospital is following centers for disease control protocol, but administrators there say the cdc told them not to worry. here is why. quote, the child is past the 21-day maximum incubation period and it has been determined by the cdc that the likelihood of ebola infection is extremely low. since the likelihood is low, the cdc declined to test this child for ebola. the cdc thinks they're getting the hang of ebola con containment because with the
exception of thomas duncan in clarks the disease hasn't spread. >> the core of control is identifying everyone who might have had contact with them and making sure they're monitored for 21 days. if they develop symptoms, immediately isolating them to break the chain of transmission. there is no doubt that we can stop ebola in this country. >> reporter: president obama is going to get a personalized briefing from that man, cdc director, dr. tom frieden, this afternoon. back to you. >> he's going to be joining us in ten minutes. peter, thank you. >> thank you for that. that's interesting, to we'll actually seek with dr. frieden prior to his meeting with the president. maybe he'll indicate what that message may be. >> maybe. >> we're going to turn to heather nauert with the latest headlines. >> another thing that the cdc is going to answer questions about is that enterovirus that has so many parents nervous. here is part of the reason why. that enterovirus has now turned deadly. the first victim of it is a
preschooler. four-year-old eli waller is from new jersey and his only symptom was pink eye. another child from the same school is now being tested. parents scared and also angry that it took ten days for officials to let them know what was going on. >> very scary. i'm very nervous. we're very nervous. >> a lot of people kept their children home from school this week. >> up until yesterday, a robo call went out to the entire school district. >> according to the cdc, the enterovirus has now sickened more than 500 people in 43 states. nearly all of them have been children. that virus is also suspected in three more states. i am scared to die. that is the heartfelt message from the kidnapped former army ranger to his parents as isis militants say that he will be the next hostage to die. peter kassig writes his parents to tell them that, quote, he
feels badly they are worried about him, but they can take comfort knowing that he was trying to help people in need. this as lawmakers call for the president to send ground troops to syria and also iraq. so far those air strikes have not been able to stop the terror group. a possible sighting of the suspected cop killer eric frien in pennsylvania has police narrowing their manhunt. authorities are focusing on a mile and a half square area after a possible sighting took place yesterday. it was not considered a positive i.d., but police are now hoping that it is a sign that they are getting closer to him. two days ago issues police finding a camp site that contained clothing, food, and ammunition thought to belong to frien. oh, canada taking on a whole new tune. ♪ ♪ >> poor guy there. that's singer mark donnelly. he takes a bit of a spill.

with the $5 billion web site for obamacare which is still not working, frankly, and it's a disaster. so many other things, benghazi, wars. irs. we have virtually incompetent leadership. so why would anybody trust our government to handle this crisis? to think that we're allowing people from west africa to come in and many of them are unchecked, come in and potentially cause a tremendous problem. >> here is a doctor who feels differently. listen to this, what he says happens if you restrict travel. >> when you start closing off countries like that, there is a real danger of making things worse. you isolate them, you can cause unrest in the country. it's conceivable that governments could fall if you just isolate them completely. importantly, you can't get supplies in and out. they need help. they need equipment and they need health care workers to come in. >> now do you change your tune after that? >> i think it's ridiculous.
but as far as giving supplies and providing medical supplies, i'm all for that. even if doctors want to go there and help, i think i'm all for that, too. but they do have to suffer consequences. it's a real problem. it's interesting, i watch all the time where this gentleman from cdc is saying you don't catch t. you can't catch it. it's almost like impossible to catch. yet an nbc reporter goes over there, a photographer and gets ebola. i'm trying to find out how did he get it? what did he do to get it? i can't imagine he was touching lots of folks. that's what he was over there for. so how did he end up -- that's going to be an interesting one. how did this gentleman get ebola, catch ebola? let's see what happens. i think it's a lot easier -- you look at west africa, in particular, and other parts of africa, it's turning out to be a catastrophe over there. >> just coming up in the show, we'll be joined about dr. thomas frieden from the cdc.

who nbc hired to shoot a story on ebola in liberia, is reportedly in good spirits, walking and eating on his own. we'll stay with this. brian? let's talk midterm elections. the balance of power in the senate is up for grabs. with the mid terms just less than a month away now, the gop needs just six seats to gain the majority. so what are the key races to watch now that we set the table? let's bring in the man that knows usually, he's with the university of virginia, center for politic, dr. larry sabato. we're down to the last few weeks. you want to begin with three races in particular. first stop, iowa. >> iowa is very important if the republicans are going to take over the senate because that has become a bluish state. it can be purple, but usually is democratic blue. but they have a good chance -- not an excellent chance, but a a woman named jody ernst. the first woman senator or
member of congress or governor from iowa. only iowa and mississippi have never elected a woman. she's running against a democratic congressman, because brailley, who has made quite a few gaffes. you'll see people in both parties can make gaffes. so right now it's very close. ernst has a tiny lead. there is a slight lean to her, but this last month will be critical mainly because of the mail ballots which democrats tend to dominate in iowa. >> wow. interesting. now, talk about one of the runoffs states is louisiana. mary landrieu, even though so much seems to be going against her in louisiana, she's still hanging tight. according to your average polls, she's up by almost two percentage points on bill cassidy? >> well, yes, because louisiana has to do it in a different way, as you know. they got to have their primary when everybody else is having their general election. so we're not going to get a definitive result out of louisiana november 4. you're going to have mary
landrieu, the democratic incumbent, move forward probably with congressman bill cassidy, a republican, to a early december runoff that will determine the next senator. look, louisiana has gotten increasingly conservative. it is strongly anti-obama. landrieu has won three times, but never gotten more than 52%. so it's possible, possible this is her water loo. >> georgia and alaska you point out are also in runoffs. we could wait until right before or after thanksgiving. let's go to colorado now where surprisingly, the republicans out in front. what's going on here? >> colorado is having a boomerang effect. they are a purple state, highly competitive. but they've gone strongly democratic in the last few elections. often when that happens, you'll have a pullback. this is the perfect year for them to have a pullback because it's a midterm election year,
lower turnout. and you're correct, the republicans are doing quite well in both the governorship contest and the u.s. senate contest. >> finally -- >> you got to watch out for the polls in colorado. they're often inaccurate. they don't measure hispanic vote well. >> right. and which would be better for the democrats theoretically. real quick on kansas, the only seat the republicans are in danger of not holding. pat robertson more than in a lot of trouble? >> a great deal of trouble. it's really incredible that kansas, ruby red kansas, might be the state that deprive republicans of a majority in the senate. a year ago nobody thought kansas would be at all competitive. but now you have no democrat running for senate. you have an independent who doesn't say whether he's going to caucus with democrats or republicans. he's wealthy. pat roberts had a long career in congress and frankly, he looks
old and tired on tv. and orman is taking advantage of it. the party, the republican party in kansas is deeply divided. >> wow. it's going to be interesting going to your crystal ball to the final few weeks. thanks so much. tell all the kids in school i said hi. >> they'll love to hear it, brian. thank you. >> thank you very much. coming up straight ahead, it was a first pitch like you've never seen before. check out this army vet getting down in the mud and tossing the pitch like a grenade. first let's check in with bill hem who are is always throwing bombs with martha mccallum. >> pull that pin. how are you? good morning. leon panetta questions president obama's leadership. that's not all he says. the latest developments on the ebola front here at home from over the weekend. how many americans are fighting alongside isis? a brand-new report on that. if you argue that radical islam exists, does that make awe racist? a heated debate when martha and i see you at the top of the hour

so we tried to respect that fact and we really trained them. and we had some pretty fun times with them on the range and stuff. not on a real range, but a private range. and then just -- it was just a good time and kind of an inside joke and i said, like, i'm going to do this one time and i'm a wounded warrior. i might as well throw a grenade. >> your whole family serving in the military. your son is in the academy. your oldest is an airborne ranger. in the big picture, we know what you did for the nationals. tell us what you did for the country. describe your service over the last few years. >> i didn't do anything that nobody else has done. i mean, the guys that are going to work 8 to 5 here that aren't in the military that give me a country to fight for, i didn't do anything more special than them. >> how did you get wounded? >> war, man.
>> yeah. >> whatever. >> you sustained injury, you said walter reed brought you back three years. you're a dad of five. after that pitch, everyone saw you, it looked like you were writing something on the mound. what did you write there? >> well, i'll tell you, elisabeth, i wrote the greatest name ever and that would be my wife's, kristen. i've been deployed for -- and gone so much since 2001 and i wish she could have gone on that mound with me because honestly, if we're being realistic, i would have never been there if it wasn't for my wife raising the kids while i was gone and loving me and taking care of me when i was sick. she's a hero. my wife, kristen, is the hero. that's the name i wrote in the mound because it was terrible that i couldn't have her with me, or any of the kids. but i thought, well, if i'll do this, she'll forever be up here with me in my memory. i did it. that's my hero.
