FOXNEWSW On The Record With Greta Van Susteren September 26, 2014 23:00:00

Into your home tonight. Thats it for special report, fair, balanced and unafraid. Make it a great weekend. Greta goes on the record right now. This is a fox news alert. Beheading right here in america in oklahoma. Woman decapitated and then the killer took his knife to a second woman, stabbing her, and now new fears that the suspect is linked to islamic extremism. The suspect was recently fired from his job where he allegedly tried to convert coworkers to islam. Then coworkers and carrying out horrific beheading. All of this happening in moore, oklahoma. With us is sarah jenson. Thank you for joining us. As i understand you got to the scene before the police. Not before the police but i was actually there only minutes after then. We are an office just about a mile from this Food Distribution plant. So i was able to get over there right as officers were arriving at the scene and it was actually still an active shooter situation but they thought it could possibly be that when i arrived. What you can tell me about the man who was shot and is now in the hospital, believed to have been the one who did this horrific beheading and stabbed the other woman . You know, i think a lot of those details are still coming to fruition at this time. You know what we do know and can confirm is that he has quite the criminal background. We know that he has done some time for acts of drugs. He has had saab assault and battery charges in the past. We also know by looking to be what we believe is his Facebook Page that he is he a radical, as far as it goes is his religion in that he was very open and upfront about what he he believed. Do you know what he was saying to coworkers as he was trying to convert them to islam . Was it sort of a friendly conversion, forceful conversion . Going on for a long time . Something new. The sergeant at the police department. He told us that all they know is that officers are receiving information from the coworkers that they were trying to convert them but the nature of those conversions or will manner in which he was going about that working with them to investigate. We contacted them and told them we dont feel like there is any danger or harm at this time that they know of. But, still actively investigating all of those intrangzs. Had he changed his name at all on the Facebook Page or the myspace . He had. I honestly dont have it in front of me but yes, it had been changed. Sarah thank you very much. Thank you. Here is one call to 911. It came in during the horrific beheading. Hear this in the background . Is that him . He is back . Yeah, it sounds like he is running around out here. And thats a gunshot. Why is the fbi investigating the oklahoma beheading case and what do we know about the man charged with this barbaric attack. Moore Sheriffs Department joins us. Good evening, sir. Good evening. At first i wondered whether we should even name this man but i think we shouldnt play any gimmicks to hide his identity. This man is accused of this horrific act. Whats his name and what is his condition . His name is actually i got it right here. Nolan alton noland. Right now he is in stable condition. Is he coming out of sedation now. We have officers and detectives in the hospital with him waiting to interview him as soon as he is he coherent enough to understand whats going on. So he is expected to live; is that right . Yes, he will live. All right. Now, what happened in there . What do you know about what happened . He was obviously an employee of the business. I dont know the reason why, but he was being terminated. He was in a separate building. The Human Resources building is in a separate building. This is a very large complex of a Food Processing plant. He became irate and left that building got into his vehicle and drove into the main entrance of the actual factory, the Large Business and he struck a vehicle, got out, went inside and the first person he came to was our first victim. He began stabbing her. Killed her and then severed her head. He began assaulting a second female and while he was in the process of assaulting her, an off duty Oklahoma County Deputy Reserve was able to come and confront him and actually shot and stopped him from killing the second victim. There are reports tonight that the fbi is involved and also that he had made that he had recently tried to convert coworkers to islam. Can you confirm that he was doing that or not, number one. Number two, did he say anything during these horrific assault . I cant confirm that he was. We do have people that did work with him tell us that he was trying to convert people to islam. There were other things that were given to us and that we found that led us to go ahead and contact the fbi to start an investigation into the background of him. As far as the other question, i dont know. We have i havent been given that that also is given to investigators so im sure that we have that information but that has not been given to me. Im trying to figure out whether tonight, and this is ongoing investigation, i realize, whether the suspected motive is a disgruntled employee perhaps or if its whether or not anyway related to islam and terrorism. One thing we do know we have horrific scene with one person dead. What we are going to find out is why it exactly happened. What his motive was. Whether he was angry employee or if there was other motives. And with some of the things that were told to us by witnesses and employees, that led us to call the fbi, which has a lot more resources in that type of investigation and they are handling the background of this individual and right now detectives are handling the homicide portion of it. At some point this could be entirely turned over to the fbi. That is going to be up to them. Is this a man who is known to the Law Enforcement . Is this someone who has been in trouble before in area . Well, weave we have found since yesterday. No its odd he works and lives in our city. But until this incident we have not had contact with him. But he was recently released from prison and has had a lot of contact with Law Enforcement. So, yes, he has had a lot of contact with Law Enforcement but not with our department. Has anyone said that he was in any way radicalized or any h. Any specific motives or anything peculiar about him in terms of his behavior whether, you know, he had a mental problems or anything at all . Because, you know, as you look at this horrific act, you know, its naturally, you know, people want to know why. And he we want to know why. One s we involved the fbi. We will find out if that is the case. But, we did need assistance on that part of the investigation wrote were given information. Unfortunately that is part of the investigation. I cant release that at this time. We do have information that led us to go ahead and contact the fbi. Where did he get the weapon . We believe the weapon is used in this factory. This is a weapon that its a knife that you would use to cut lettuce, things like that. An average size knife. But it did appear that it came from the business. Why was he being terminated . We, im sure, have that. I have not been given that information. So at this time i dont have the exact reasons. I know that there are multiple reasons but i dont have those. Does it appear that the fatality is was a random person . Did he seem to know them at all . We dont believe that he was targeting them. It was unfortunately who he came in contact with when he entered the business. By his actions its clear he had intent of harming who he came in contact with. If the deputy had not stopped his attack, it would not have been his last victim. It was obvious he was trying to kill this person. There was several other hundred people working in this factory that were also at risk if this deputy wouldnt have stopped the assault. He was in the process of still assaulting and attempting to kill our second victim when he was shot. What is the condition of the second victim . Is she going to live . She was in stable condition last update she is qund expected to live. I cant even imagine this horrific scene or imagine a work place like this. It really is is the the worse, isnt it . As far as our community and our police department, i think we are all pretty much still in shock. To have any, you know, we just its a very safe area. We are in the center of oklahoma. And then to have a crime like this kind of a nightmare we are going through now. For her family and just for our citizens, we have got to figure out exactly what happened. What was the motive and what he has been doing and what he has been thinking. Sergeant, thank you. Terribly tragic and tragic for the family of the victim and also even the members of Law Enforcement who have to do as you say investigate. This thank you, sir. Thank you. And with the beheading right here in america, fears of domestic terror attacks growing by the minute. Should americans be worried that an attack is eminent. Walid phares joins us. Thank you. Before we get to the broader issue of domestic terrorism, im curious, we have reports that the man accused in this horrible beheading his name is alton noland or changed his name or Facebook Page. Im given you what we are told is his name. Is that any significance that he changed his name . First is the environment of this change of name. Beheading of a woman, loss of job. Its too imbalanced. Must be something in the middle. Now we are learning that there is attempt for conversion. Thats fine. What did he say is very important . I look at the name alton noland because israel. In arabic, arab speakers understand the harvester of life. That doesnt give us enough evidence. It is something that we have to look at. We need to read what was the content of his facebook. Something thats suspicious but not determined. Not determined. All right. Now, the bigger issue, do we have to it fear that isis is coming here . Isis has typically been interested in only land and money. Hideous things in the middle east. But what about coming here . Nothing has changed because isis now has declared that all those who think like isis, all the jihadists have a duty and obligation to start striking against the United States. United kingdom. Australia and what is interesting about isis, unlike al qaeda, they want anybody, including those who do not have any connection to them to do as much as they can each one with his own methods and ways. This is now apparently the iraqi Prime Minister yesterday scared everyone saying that they had information that the subway is going to be hit in paris and in new york. Now, that has been debunked by the u. S. The u. S. Said thats not true is that to make us feel secure or is that a threat out there. Standing guideline isis any jihadist around the world involved in any country involved in the strikes on sis sis to do something about it among the things they could do is attack Public Transportation but not every single cell, not every single individual can organize such a thing. The iraqis are telling us probably they heard something today in the chat rooms which is very possible but it doesnt mean that this is on that, this is going to happen for sure should would he be panicked or not . We dont know whether we should be who wants to be alarmist for something on the other hand, horrible things are happening around the world and we want to be careful. Where should would he be in this continuum of being secure versus being panicked . Panicked. No feeling secure and do nothing about it also no. What we should do is to be alert our leader should be educating the public. We should hear from them there is a real threat how does it happen . Im very interested in this case to bring it back. These could be replicate around the nation. We need to know more. This chatter, i imagine this chatter goes on nonstop that the u. S. And everybody is looking at. Speaking in code. In fact, Catherine Herridge told us last week that they speak in code. How can we protect ourselves . General guidelines are open. You need to do as much as they can. Online guideline of a thousand pages done 5 or 6 years ago. How many ways jihadists could do us harm. What we need to do right now is listen to who is radicalizing. We need to come much earlier than the fact that when they are moving explosives and what they are trying to do in terms of sniping or killing. When people are radicalizing is the moment that we have to be concerned about. Alert but not panic. Walid, thank you. Thank you. Well, everyone agreed. And that means everyone, isis is evil and musting destroyed what will it take to destroy not just degrade. Military officials answering questions about the strategy to defeat isis. Under any allusions, that air strikes alone will destroy isil. And with news it will take up to a year to get arab Ground Troops trained and ready for combat what else can the u. S. Do now besides air strikes. Scott carey, good evening, sir. Good evening, greta. Great to be here. All right. We hear reports that Iraqi Military just lost anywhere from 800 killed or kidnapped or whatever in their military. We hear that just happened. I dont know if thats a true report or not. A lot of inconsistent things coming out of the region. Is there any way that we could possibly beat isis on the path that we are on . Certainly on the start of the path. This is going to be a long road. Going to require maintained pressure. Understand we have done a couple hundred air strikes. In the first gulf war it was 100,000. Last war in iraq 40,000. We are not at the order of magnitude we need to be even in the air. Absolutely, sooner or later. Somebody has to go on the ground and mop it it up. I would say we are not talking about something thats fundamental to fixing this problem, which is get these countries involved in neighboring nations that have been supporting radicalization fundamental whether i funds and with ideology around the globe who are now concerned about it being at their doorstep. We need to get them involved in renouncing that and putting a stigma to it in their own country in their own community and making sure that these things dont emanate from their own nations. That has to end. We are fighting the battle against them go ahead. I will tell you Something Else that concerns me before we run out of time. Today Jennifer Griffin, one of my colleagues who works correspondent at the pentagon asked secretary hagel about the Free Syrian Army. The president has just gotten 500 million from congress to train and arm them. Listen to the tape, the exchange Jennifer Griffin and secretary hagel. Who is the head of the free syrian opposition, the moderate rebels that you are planning to train . Well, first of all, we are in the process of setting up the vetting system for those that we will begin training moderate opposition syrian fighters. Who is the head of that operation. Well, we dont have a head of it. Now, i find it rather very disheartening and disturbing that they dont have a head. President obama has asked for 500 million. We are going to train the Free Syrian Army and we dont even know who it is. Thats exactly one of the questions i asked which is the reason i voted no for it on this measure. We dont know who they are. A series of desperate groups disbanded and rebanded and literally tribal groups that really dont necessarily have any affiliation and if you have no command and control, how do you expect to win this . Not only do they not have any command and control who is controlling this from our side . We dont know. I mean, its absurd what we got 500 million that he were giving over to it a group and our secretary you would think he would know who it. Thats exactly right. We helped depose muammar qaddafi in libya. Now its a failed state. Same thing in syria where assaad is now making up ground based on our attacks with isil and are we going to end up in a proxy war with russia . These questions need to be answered, greta from my standpoint for the american and specifically for those soldiers and Service Members that are going to be on the ground and in the air over those countries risking their lives and they havent been answered. It feels a tad bit like who is on first. I hope im wrong on that. Congressman, thank you, sir. Thank you, greta. The uk just joined the fight against isis but only in iraq. Joining us from london, a former Foreign Policy aid to british Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher now director of the Thatcher Center for freedom. Nice to he see you. Tell me what about syria . Thank you. Very good question, greta. As you mentioned, the house of commons today voted overwhelm ily in favor of British Military action in iraq. The vote did not focus itself on syria because i think the Prime Minister David Cammeron was concerned that he might not win a vote on military action over the syrian issue. However, he held out the possibility of britain joining military action against isis targets in syria. And he did explain that he thought that syria was an important front in the war against isis. Britain wasnt yet about to get involved in syria. But he did certainly hold\rout britain would join in action against syria as well. My thought is. This i dont pretend to be a military expert. We dont need a lot of help from iraq in the sky because we have that we really need help in syria. The u. K. Really needs to do something about the fact that its a breeding ground for so many of these terrorists. It seems to meet bigger problems for us are the breeding ground aspect and im not saying that we dont have problems here in some areas of our country in terms of breeding, but you have a big one, and we need help in syria. Excellent point. Opinion poll released in london would show that 51 of british people support British Military action in syria itself. And another interesting figure, 43 of britains actually support sending British Ground forces to fight in iraq. And so thats a very significant development. You see the only thing the british become increasingly hawkish with regard to military action. And britain is very important for the United States. Its americas closest friend and ally. Very important that britain is at the heart of any kind of international coalition. Certainly parliament sent a very strong message today of solidarity with the United States. David cammeron gave a very good passionate speech in the house of commons. And i think that, you know, britain is prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder with america against isis and this can only be a very very positive development on the international stage. But i think the next debate here in london is certainly going to be whether or not britain is going to join military action in syria itself. After all, syria is the hornts nest, epicenter of the evil isis network. There is growing momentum in london British Action against syria itself. Nile, thank you for joining us, especially since i know its so late there. Thank you, greta. What impact would the british troops joining the air strikes in iraq and iraq\ronly have in isis. General bob scales joins us. Good evening, sir. Hi, greta. The brits helping us in iraq means what . Well, there is is an old say not guilty pentagon that america doesnt have coalition until the brits join it its been that way for decades. They are half joining. He they are not joining us in syria and remember a year ago they turned us down again when president obama wanted to go against syria. Remember how slow this campaign is evolving. We are going to be in this thing for years. Things get worse in syriaened a problems will grow particularly in great britain, you are going to see, i think, the british come in on our side in syria. I think its inevitable. But, look. As of right now, wind behind our backs to have someone say im half in. Maybe im looking. Are you with us or not . And we need your help on everything. Absolutely. And backing into this thing is really really tough. The brits bring regional\rintelligence, second to none. Superb pilots. Clandestined services which i believe will eventually join this fight not only in iraq but also syria are invaluable to us and have been in the past. We have also got other europeans, the dains, belgiums, dutch. Australians joining. This is pretty good news. What do you think secretary of defense hagel cant name who we are going to be giving the 500 million to. Holy smokes. Ultimate slow rolling campaign. What we just heard this afternoon is if you are looking for a a ground presence in syria. Looking for a counter attack in syria, you have got to wait at least a year. We dont know what this whatever this new coalition of syrian is going to be like. Oh, by the way, we dont even know who is going to command it. Its not a year, greta. Thats a year and a half for isis to plan to execute and to expand their ten nickels throughout the middle east its unacceptable. 500 million to. 500 million not know who we are giving it to. Iraq, question whether iraqis can fight themselves against isis in iraq. I just read, i dont know if its true, that 800 iraqs, what happened . It was a battalion outpost north of fallujah. 800 iraqi soldiers either were killed or captured or ran away. Thats an entire battalion. Think about it. That to me, okay, so we dont know so iraqi army cant do it themselves. They either run or get killed by isis. 800 of them yesterday. Right. Or today. And then over in syria, were going to supposedly help this moderate group but our secretary of defense cant even name who it is and we have authorize 500 million. That seems pretty messed up to me. We are not going to see a ground presence other than the United States for at least a year and a half. Im not suggesting we are. Im saying what we are doing seems peculiar. Very peculiar and very slow. This is not a campaign. This is just sort of an evolution over time. While isis keeps growing and growing. Wildfire. Took fallujah in january,\rmostly in june. They have taken down the bank. They have half a billion dollars. Making 2 million a day on oil. Here is the other thing. Moral effect. Isis elements in algeria. Isis elements in afghanistan. The ten neck ten neck kels is growing. Does not poor tend it well. Thank you, greta. Man arrested accused of kidnapping uva coed Hannah Graham arrived moments ago in virginia. This is Jesse Matthew, arriving, shackled, getting into a windowless van just two deputies around him very\rcalm. That is just a few minutes before 7 00. Our producer, kristin brown, also about a mile away at the jail confirmed his arrival in that van shortly before 7 15. So, he has been booked. One of the things that chief longo has been talking about all week long is of course the search for hannah but also the need to know more about Jesse Matthews time line. The hours on saturday night and those after and what is going on. What was his evening like and so we tried to put together as best we could the details known about jesses time line, take a look. Stwo weeks ago, 18yearold Hannah Graham mysteriously disappeared. We is have no idea whatsoever where she is. The university of virginia student vanishing in the middle of the night. Nowhere to be found. I believe that Jesse Matthew was the last person she was seen with before she vanished off the face of the earth. What do we know about Jesse Matthew, the suspect now charged with class 2 felony for abduction . And where was he headed the night hannah disappeared . On the record tracked down cloyd bare foot a local radio journalist who has followed the story from the start. He left work about 3 00 and heads over to the Football Game, a home Football Game that goes until about 6 00. The the Football Game, Jesse Matthew known by friends as l. J. Was a new volunteer assistant coach at covenant school, a Christian School here in charlottesville. After the game his night begins. We next have l. J at about 10 00 p. M. Walking into the lazy parrot grill. Lj went alone, according to two sources at the lazy parrot grill who spoke with me. He stayed long enough for one drink. At the same time, Hannah Graham is still with friends. Caught on surveillance cameras in a college apartment. Thats when jesse heads to an outdoor pedestrian mall in downtown charlottesville. I have confirmed with witnesses and friends of lj that he entered the blue light grill here on charlottesvilles downtown mall and was recognized by friends the moment he came in the door. They had a few drinks here at the blue light grill. One of the women who was there in this group told me that lj was tracking her through the bar. Constantly putting his hands around her, his arm around her, touching her hair, touching her face and made her very uncomfortable. She told her other friends hey, lets move on and see if we can lose this guy. Still with friends, hannah is partying near the university of virginia\rcampus. Back at the mall, jesse goes with his group to their next stop, tempo restaurant. He continues to hit on the young women that are in the group. And one of them told me that she had, by that point, gotten really mad about it and that he kept trying to put his hands on her legs. Above and below the knee. Touching her hair, putting his arm around her. And she finally turned to him and leaned into him and said keep your [bleep] hands off me. Hannah has left her friends. She is now alone, caught on surveillance cameras, outside an irish pub and heading down a highway, moving away from campus, going directly toward jesse. He heads down the mall in this direction. At the same moment Hannah Graham is coming up the mall on the other side. And he sees her. Thats when Jesse Matthew crosses the platform. He starts following\rhannah up the mall this way. Now jesse heads back to tempo, this time with Hannah Graham. Lj came to tempo twice that night. That has not been previously reported. He was here the first time a few minutes after 12 with his friends. And then it was later that evening when some witnesses say that he came back here with hannah. Credit Card Transactions show that jesse purchased two drinks. They stay until last call. And, as they leave, the restaurant bouncer notices something critical. She made a mental note to herself oh, theres that obnoxious guy who was here about an hour ago. And she said he was not alone and that he had a young woman under his arm. Its then that Hannah Graham disappears. Now, the next what will happen, greta, is the\rarraignment. That wont happen until thursday because of a scheduled judicial conference. The court is closed monday, tuesday, wednesday. What we do know is that nearly two weeks to the day that Hannah Graham goes missing Jesse Matthew sits about a mile away in a jail tonight. Joining us our Political Panel Washington Times and jim garety and susan father rich choo he. Susan, Jonathan Karl had a question and apparently we dont have to worry anymore about al qaeda. Morphed into something more dangerous that can the core bombs metal detectors has their eyes on taking down a plane coming into the United States. They are considered far more dangerous. And the whole fight has evolved into this big mess in syria. Where these people came to the president two years ago and said we need to do something about this and he said no. And now we have this gigantic mess in syria. On its face, ridiculous to say its no longer a threat. Bigger threat than had has ever been. Corzine the one they are going after now is al qaedaaffi. I dont know, that sounds like al qaeda to me. He they got really way too cute on this. This is clearly a big part of the 2012 campaign that we have disseminated core al qaeda. The idea that we put that little adjective in front of it the top three guys. We got one of them. American people arent that stupid. Um, this worked for them. Remember. Al qaeda is dead. And detroit is alive. Detroit has now declared bankruptcy. You get the idea by saying its just these three guys we are islamist terrorist. Isis, diet, they are all maniacs who want to kill us. Only label that matters. Remember, what they are trying to do here, they have got a problem. They have got two different issues. They are legally arguing that they can go after this group because it is still al qaeda under the 2001 use of force. The war declaration yet, at the same time, they are saying this is core al qaeda is less of a threat. Its a real conflict. That is horrible. I didnt realize that you but you are absolutely right. Thats terrible this. This goes back to a president who cant admit he misevaluated this danger. If there are defense is core al qaeda is destroyed they are no longer in afghanistan and pakistan instead they are in syria i dont know what defense that is. Admit al qaeda is al qaeda. Your example is great. The secretary of defense who doesnt know the name who doesnt know who is in charge of the group who is supposed to be friendly with us. This is really getting out of control. Totally collintonian whats the definition of core . If thats what were arguing about salesman particulars rather than semen particulars salesman particulars rather than how to defeat them. You the narrative to me is that theyre being deceitful. Maybe the narrative to them that al qaeda is on the run. Narrative is deceitful. I think the public agrees\rwith you, greta, thats one of the residents why the president s poll ratings have taken such a dive. People are evaluating him over and over. Two terms i see is weak and indecisive. There has not been rally around the flag effect you usually see when the u. S. Takes military action. I thought obamas speech at the u. N. Now he, the suspect, as well as the woman, the second victim are still in the hospital at this hour. The detectives say that nolan was a recent convert to islam.
