FOXNEWSW On The Record With Greta Van Susteren July 18, 2016 23:00:00

And me. The first night of the rnc. Greta goes on the record right now. Tonight, on the record, we are coming to you live from the Republican National convention in cleveland. And 13 months ago donald trump launched what many, if not most said was the impossible. His campaign for the republican nomination for president of the United States. Now he is just days away from making it official. But not all republicans here in the arena are happy. Today when the convention kicked off, chaos broke out on the floor, a battle over the rules. [chanting] over the angry objections of antitrump forces, republican Party Leaders approving the rules for their National Convention. And, tonight, all eyes are not on donald trump but on his wife, Melania Trump. Very soon, she will be taking the stage very first night and add to the excitement here in the arena, donald trump has decide to do arrive here early to introduce his wife mellane i cant. A few hours ago, trump tweeted this, looking forward to being at the convention tonight to watch all of the wonderful speakers, including my wife mellane i cant. The place looks beautiful. A few months ago, i went to trump tower on new yorks fifth avenue to sit down with Melania Trump. He knows what he can do for america he is amazing leader, communicator. He is the only one that could bring america to the next level. The people support him from the party. He will have even easier time so they not fighting him all the time. And he can do that because he understands how everything works and is he a great dealmaker. And he is a great negotiator. Have a great heart. He wants to take care of america and American People and keep it safe. But, of course, Melania Trump is not the only speaker people are excite to do z former speaker of the house Newt Gingrich takes the stage later this week. Speaker gingrich is here to go on the record tonight. Nice to see you, mr. Speaker. Great to be with you. What happened to the revolt today on the floor. They didnt have the votes. Seemed pretty fierce, so now what happens . I think people when they lose get very intense. I think that they feel strongly about their position. But they didnt have the votes. They couldnt get it order. They couldnt win last week on the rules committee or the Platform Committee and they couldnt win today. This was the Never Trump Movement. Right. Or the people who didnt want trump. There is a point you say get over it they did everything they could. He won fair and square. And the american model usually the guy who wins fair and square you unify around because thats what a party is all about. All right. If you unify, how come senator ted cruz going to be speaking here has not endorsed him . I hope that cruz will decide to enforce him. I think trump was showing generosity in saying to cruz, look, you are a big enough player. You ran hard enough. You ought to speak whether you endorse or not. Thats a sign in trumps favor. If cruz doesnt endorse donald trump . I think it will be sad. And, you know, if he misuses his speech time it will be sort of a betrayal. Im confident that cruz has a enough sense of history that is he going to speak in a positive way and hopefully is he going to help unify us. Is cruzs motive, do you think this week to support donald trump or is it to pave the way for his future . Well, its probably half and half. Politic sass business of mutual selfinterest. I think he knows that it is helpful to trump that he is here. The contrast, for example with kasich is very obvious. I think at the same time, he is going back into the senate. He wants to reintegrate himself as a member of the team, and i think this is a significant step in that direction. You mentioned governor kasich. This is ohio. Governor kasich is the governor here. He took the pledge to support the nominee. Not only has he not endorsed him but is he a noshow. John is an old friend of mine. We would not have balanced our budget without the leadership of him as a committee chairman. I like him very much. Im totally perplexed by his current behavior. It makes no sense at all. As you said he did sign the pledge. The minimum just keeping his word would be a good thing. But, in addition, he is the host of the National Convention. This is a major draw for cleveland. Its a great economic thing for cleveland. And as the host, he ought to have the decency to show up. Did anyone call him and talk to him . Did you. I talked to a number of people near him and they were just, you know, he and weaver seem to be off in their own world. Weaver is his campaign manager. Did you speak to kasich yourself about this . No. All right. So he is a noshow. There are a lot of other noshows. The fact that kasich is a no show. Is he going to appear in every secretary clinton add between now and november where she says even his own party doesnt like him, meaning trump. Well, hillary can run all the negative ads she wants to. Jeb bush tried that technique. Hillary ran 20 million in ads last month. Trump ran zero. I dont think those ads are very effective. Frankly, hillary has so many liabilities that her trying to go negative on trump is a little bit of a joke. Trump wants to, i assume, and so does Reince Priebus and the rnc want to unify the Republican Party. Fair . Right. One of the parts of the platform that they came out with is that they want an antigay marriage amendment to the constitution. And there are members of the Republican Party who are gay. How does that unify them . Well, i think you have to show a great deal of support for individuals who are gay while saying that you still believe in traditional marriage. I think the base of this party, thats where they are. And i think its representative of them. I dont think thats an issue that trump is going to campaign on. But its a fact that we are the socially conservative party. There is also in the platform the building a wall. Used to be fence. Now its wall. Where did they get that word wall . Look, thats Trumps Campaign theme. Anybody who has been to israel knows that fences work. Anybody who has been to hungry recently knows that fences work. The hungarians cut the number of Syrian Refugees by over 95 the first day after they built the fence. Trump is committed to it. Its going to get built. It can be built. People say it cant are just nuts. Obviously you can build one if you want to. Tonight, one of the speakers is Melania Trump, Donald Trumps wife who speaks five languages i might add when i interviewed her. What do you think her goal is tonight . One level kind of reminds me of theresa hunt speaking in theresa kerry, former hunt, speaking at john kerrys nomination in 2004 because she could speak multiple languages, she delivered part of her speech in different languages. Melania is not only very, very attractive as a supermodel but proof that trump is not antiimgrant. He is just for legal immigrants. I dont know if you noticed the monmouth poll that came out today by independents. It has a month ago donald trump and secretary clinton were tied. This poll has donald trump with independents up 9 points over Hillary Clinton. I think part of that is the comey effect. I think the fbi directors 14minute indictment before explaining he wouldnt recommend prosecution has had a devastating impact on the belief that Hillary Clinton is dishonest and clearly lies. All right. Have you written your speech yet . We are in the middle of writing it now. What does that mean . We have three guys, jonas, vince hailey and Ross Worthington help me all writing it and calista is the final editor. Sometime tomorrow we will get it done. How many minutes do you have. I think i have about 13 or 14. She has two or three. Who does . Calista. She is introducing me. Are you nervous. No. Not at all. No. Calista. You have to ask calista. Im not going to get in the middle of that. Mr. Speaker, nice to see you. Nice to see. You on the record noise right behind me. We are in the center of it all. They just said hello to cleveland. We are on the floor of the convention and just across the floor in the member of the delegates is cohost of americas newsroom my colleague martha maccallum. Martha . Well, we are here on the floor of the Republican National convention, things kicked off today. Rick perry, the governor of texas was just up there. Rousing up the crowd and getting people interested. Is he going to speak later tonight. This afternoon we had some real drama down here as all of this sort of free the delegates and conscience vote effort played out. It got pretty raucous at one point. At one point Ken Cuccinelli the former attorney general of West Virginia threw down his credentials and stormed out. In favor say aye . Aye. All those opposed no . No. And the opinion of the chair, the ayes have it and the resolution is agreed to. Without objection, the motion to reconsider is laid upon the table. [cheers] the chair now recognizes the delegate from the state of West Virginia. On the floor. Were not supposed to be on the floor . This doesnt work. Greta, they are trying furiously to have the Never Trump Movement stay alive here in cleveland. They want their voices heard. They know that they will not have the delegates to allow anybody else like a ted cruz, for example, to stake a real claim here. But what theyre saying, mike lee, the senator from utah is saying we are talking about the future and ted cruz said the other day you cant you have to win a battle before you can win the war. Its clear that they have their focus more on 2020 than they i dont know if anyone cares the press gets kicked out. Were not that popular. Thank you. Outside the arena where all the delegates are gathered, of course, in the arena where Melania Trump will be shortly outside there are protesters and already there is at least one arrest. Law enforcement is working around the clock here in cleveland to protect Constitutional Rights to protest and to keep everyone safe. On the records Griff Jenkins is out on the streets in the middle of it all. Griff . Thats right, greta. Its a 50milliondollar security operation. The Police Working with protesters to make it peaceful so that they can have their First Amendment right. Its been just that peaceful today there were some black lives matter folks and other groups marching. Out here, i will give you the look just here at the main entrance of the q. We you are inside, we are outside. Here seems to be some street preachers and people that are in favor of same sex marriage and those that are against it. And they are doing their thing over here. Folks generally holding a trump flag. But it adds, again, most important, peaceful. That was the key. One of the tactics that police have used when we have seen a few upsets and we were out here a couple hours ago when anonymous had some folks out there. They are protesting the twoparty system. They believe its rigid. They do draw a lot of attention with bandannas and little bit intimidating. The police used their bike tactic. They roll up on 50 or 60 bikes and get off their bikes and they make a barricade and do crowd control. This is one of the main thoroughfares. This is where a lot of protesters were coming down earlier trying to get into this area. They are not going to do it. They are not going to breach this at least as far as we have seen because this security operation has been in the making for 18 months as they tell us. Thousands of Law Enforcement from hundreds of Law Enforcement agencies. And we spoke with one of clevelands fbi special agents Vicki Anderson today. Here is what she had to say. Were a big partner with all of the local Law Enforcement, federal, and state partners. We have been planning obviously for well over a year. The fbis role is really to prepare for all those things we definitely dont want to occur. We are looking at terrorism. Domestic and international, and then being an intelligence partner for all of the Law Enforcement. So any information that we receive wherever in the nation, from all the horrific events that have happened over the last few weeks. We share any information that we get from those with our local partners so that they can decide their posture and maybe make any changes they need to. And as you see behind me, delegates going in the cue where you are now in the q where you are now. People expressing their First Amendment rights. Greta . I just want to give a shoutout to those police out there. They have a tough job. And of course people have a constitutional trite protest peacefully. Those cops are doing a great job keeping everyone safe and protecting that right. I want to give them a shoutout. Right now we are back inside the arena where donald trump will soon be introducing his wife mellane i cant. Trump says is he a law and order candidate. Tonight National Security will take center stage at the Republican National convention. Illinois congressman and air force pilot Adam Kinzinger is here to go on the record. Good evening, sir. Hey, greta, how are you . Good. Trump says is he a law and order president. What does that mean . Basically talking about the fact that look at the last 8 years under president obama. You have the rise of russia. Nobody knew what isis was even three years ago. And we have seen the middle east on fire. The world on fire. Look, we need somebody thats going to stand up for National Security, thats going to defend what america is about. And understand Americas Mission to be an example to the world of what selfgovernance is. Let me ask you about issues. Turkey, the attempted coop on friday coup on friday night. Its a tough position for the United States to support a coup. We cant do it in a democratically elected area. This is a really bad Case Scenario for turkey because right now erdogan trying to consolidate power and become a oneman show is going to use this as opportunity to do it. It is incumbent on the United States now to hold turkey accountable saying we get you have to punish people for a coup attempt. At the end of the day expect human rights as a member of nato. They have a very important member. Is turkey the next iran in terms of moving so far away from a secular government . The reason i ask you is that air base in turkey is so critical to our fight against isis. We use that. Thats one of our best resources. I have spent some time at that air base with the military. Its extremely important. To answer your question, i sure hope not. Turkey is major ally. Bridge between europe and middle east. We have to do our best to encourage the turks to continue to stand for human rights, freedom, and for secular government. It seems to be going in the wrong direction. It does. Its a powder keg there tell me how a President Donald Trump would handle turkey different than and i will say president obama secretary clinton for president . I think the easy thing is look who donald trump surrounds himself with and we will find a lot of this out over this week. Look at what president obama has done over the last eight years. Do you have any doubts that Hillary Clinton will be another eight years of president obama or four years that should be alleviated by the fact that she was at the front end of his administration. The reset with russia and everything else. We have to understand that the world is not necessarily a big kum ba yah where everybody just needs to have their hand held and they will be fine. It takes american strength. Unfortunately under eight years of president obama, there has not been american strength. Where is the cutoff between diplomacy and strength . I think it all works together. Diplomacy is important. Diplomacy has to being backed by strength. Soft power. The use of energy as a weapon, for instance. Right now the russians use energy to great advantage in tearing apart europe. You also have to be willing to use that big stick as roosevelt said. One quick question, governor kasich isnt here. Your thoughts . This is his state. I will let him answer for that i think is he a great governor. If he wants to show up, he can show up. I dont know what kind of answer that was. Not a great one. Congressman, always nice to see you, sir. Great to see you, thank you. Joining me, two of tonights Convention Speakers sean duffy and his wife. They go on the record from the fox sky box. High above the quicken loans arena. Good evening to both of you. Hey, greta. Thank you. Thanks for having us on. And, of course, i musted a from the great state of wisconsin i always add that one. You know i have a bias. Rachel, first to you. What are you going to say tonight . We want to talk about how Great America is we both have great immigrant stories. Sean comes from a long line of lumber jacks. I come from mexican immigrants to the state of arizona. I think the dream is still alive. Thats what we are working to preserve. Thats what our speech is going to focus on. Congressman, how is this going to work . Who is going first . Are you going to do in tam tam den . Give us a preview. Going to be tough. Two people on stage sharing one
