FOXNEWSW On The Record With Greta Van Susteren August 20, 2016

I just got back from a tour of the suffering louisiana, spirit of the people is incredible. Honestly, obama ought to get off the golf course and get down there. We have a lot to overcome in our country, especially the fact that our jobs are being taken away from us. We are not going to allow it to happen. Especially its happening right here in michigan. No group in america has been more harmed by Hillary Clintons policies than africanamericans. No group. In Fidel Castros goal was to inflict pain on the africanamerican American Community she could not have done a better job its a disgrace. At the end of four years, i guarantee you that i will get over 95 of the africanamerican vote. I promise you. We must do better as a country i refuse to believe that the future must be like the past. It wont be. Our future is going to be a great future for everyone. For everyone. In a trump administration, all workers of all colors will get priority for jobs in their own country, which is about time. I want higher wages for africanamericans, for hispanic americans, and for all americans. We want higher wages. Campaign carl cameron out on the trail with trump. Karl, what do you think of that . Hi, kimberly, this has been an exceptional week for the Trump Campaign for reasons and for purposes both big and small. He began using teleprompters for the first time during rallies, something he said would never have worked about a year ago. And he did it not just for policy speeches but for rallies four nights in a row. Five nights in a row including tonight here in diamond dale, michigan. He let go or accepted the resignation of Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort. Prior to the president s being able to do so. He has been on vacation. He could have. The plan is not to go there until tuesday when he is back to work next week. And he has installed two new campaign chiefs. Both steve bannon the former breitbart executive who is now the chief executive of the campaign and Kellyanne Conway a pollster and strategist very, very experienced. Quite renowned and respected red in republican circles who is now the campaign manager. A lot of what we have seen in terms of the change of tone, trump has tried very aggressively to moderate a little bit, stick to the script a little bit. And, expand some of his policies, his appeal to africanamerican and hispanic voters something that we have not seen to the degree that we have this week at all in this campaign. So, a big, big change for donald trump. He does occasionally revert to the fireworks and the bomb basbombast as he did tonigt with teleprompter speech. Winning africanamerican votes four years from now by 95 margin. Even the people in the audience, who said that they would love the idea that trump didnt use the teleprompter have begun to suggest that they do kind of like it. They appreciate he is speaking to the script of talking about policy in addition to just the name calling. Kimberly . Kimekimberly. A lot of pos. People of louisiana happy to have trump visit. You are not playing golf in marthas vineyard. Thats all we can say. You are not playing golf. Means a lot just showing up here, buddy. Somebody is. Make America Great again. Thank you. Build it back. Its a great place. I have had a great history with louisiana. They need a lot of help. Whats happened here is incredible. Nobody understands how bad it is. Its really incredible. Im just here to help. Fox news correspondent Casey Stegall has been in louisiana all week long, talking to residents and surveying the damage. Casey . Cism enterally, can i tell that you trump was very well received today, some people stopping their cleanup efforts all together to take a picture or wave at the motor indicated as it winded its way through the parishes and residential streets right next to the furniture and personal belongings on the curb. Peoples lives that were ruined in the flood and could not be saved. Now, we are not talking about massive crowds or anything like that, this is a disaster zone after all. But largely the people we have spoken to were just happy to see him for the attention and the cameras that it brought to the state. Because many on the ground have been so angry that president obama has not made so much as a televised statement since this crisis and they have felt ignored. We now know mr. Obama will travel here on tuesday are, but for some its too little too late. Regardless, politics aside, people of louisiana are hurting and in a really, really bad way. Nearly 4,000 remain in shelters tonight. No homes to return to. 90,000 have filed for federal Disaster Assistance dollars. The governor here has estimated that more than 40,000 homes were damaged or destroyed by mother nature. Some state leaders believe that number is low and its actually more like 100,000 houses. But, with some areas still under water this evening, one week after the first raindrop started falling, its just too vast and it is still too early to know exactly what the figures are, the damage is so widespread it has all not been fully assessed. Adding insult to injury, many of the first responders, emks, police, firefighters, who have been working around the clock and helping others, well, they are victims themselves. Many have their own families displaced. They have answered the call of duty, they are showing up for work, and they are helping each other. Kimberly . Casey, thanks for that update. We do pray for those families. Such devastation. Donald trump talked about his visit to louisiana during a rally just a short time ago in michigan. These are hard times for many in this country. I just got back from a tour of the suffering and devastation in louisiana. Perhaps you can tell by the way im dressed. Just got off the plane. It was actually incredible. The spirit of the people is incredible. The devastation, likewise, they have never seen anything like it. But the spirit of the people is incredible and honestly, obama ought to get off the golf course and get down there. Former president ial candidate and donald trump supporter dr. Ben carson goes on the record. Thank you, dr. Carson, for being on the program tonight. And i think a most auspicious week for the Trump Campaign. It has been a wonderful week for the Trump Campaign, because, you know, he has begun to really focus on the issues. And when you compare his solutions against hillary hillay clintons, there is no comparison. For instance, you know, she says take the pie and divide it up evenly and redistribute it he says lets make lots of pies so that we can have pie for everybody. Thats the kind of spirit that made America Great in the first place. Creating the right kind of atmosphere, thats what he is doing. What do you think about some the recent changes, you know, a lot of discussion about that with, of course, kellyanne coming onto the campaign. The i guess, you know, now resignation of Paul Manafort who was obviously helpful to the campaign during those crucial primaries and with the delegates. Your thoughts . Well, its like a relay race appropriate analogy since we are in the olympic period. But, you know, corey was a great first leg of the race. He did something that no one else has ever been able to do before. And then paul came along when there was a real delegate situation and he was able to do that along with the convention and now its time for the finish. You bring in the people who are going to be able to do that. Donald trump himself has been gradually recognizing that he does need to spend a lot more time talking about the issues and less time giving ammunition to those who wish to destroy him. And he recognizes because i have had many conversations with him that this is a crucial election. Its not about four years or 8 years. This is about the rest of the history of america. And, you know, the people who are the never trump people who are republicans who cant quite get past their own personal feelings really need to stop and think about their children and their grandchildren and the future of this nation. And when you see in moments of crisis like this and great struggle and strife, with the tremendous suffering in louisiana, you see donald trump going there, stepping up, reaching out to the family members, and the juxtaposition of the president of the United States not going but, of course, now he has a trip planned there. Well, certainly everybody has a right to live their life according to their priorities the only responsibility we the people have is to look at the way they are living their life and what they are doing and tells us what we need to know. This is actually very revealing for everybody. I think its absolutely spectacular that donald trump was willing to go down there because you look at those people, thousands of people whose lives have been literally turned upside down. They are devastated. It is so comforting for them to know that someone, you know, in the hierarchy of this country is willing to come down and see what they are talking about. And this is something that you are going to see a lot more Going Forward over these next several weeks. You know, when you think about it, and its not so long ago and sadly its a memory that sticks. You know, we had that one of our americans beheaded. James folly with the image, you know, of the president on the golf course. Its disturbing to people speaks volumes of what people are talking about today. It does. Basically we are all in this together. We are all in same boat. If part of the boat sinks the rest of it goes down, too. We must begin to care about each other. We need the kind of leadership that will begin to bring people together. We are not each others enemies. Just stop stoking those flames of division. All right, dr. Carson, county Trump Campaign get it done . We have got, what, 80 days left. Its already starting. I think you are going to see a pretty significant change in the polls even next week. And its going to continue. And as he continues to talk about the actual issues, and the fact that you have one candidate who completely disregards the national debt, and the fiscal gap and has no concern about whats happening to the future americans, and the other one who has a history of being able to do things quickly and efficiently just look at their campaigns, look at the bloated side of Clinton Campaign and streamline size of the Trump Campaign even though last month he raised more money than she did. He is going to spend money judiciously. It will make a huge difference in term of what is required of us as american citizens. We will see if the American People think that model and that practice of being judicious with the money will transfer over to the American Economy because we certainly could use some help. Dr. Carson, always a pleasure. Thank you. Thank you. And louisianas largest newspaper, the advocate called on president obama to cut his vacation short and visit the flood ravaged state. And now the president is doing just that. Today, white house announcing the president will go to louisiana on tuesday. But is tuesday too little, too late . The advocates editor peter kovach goes on the record. Thanks for joining us. The criticism is you got outtrumped. Trump beat him to the punch. He should have gone there. He is the commander and chief. The president should be there to counsel and console people in a time of need. Well, we welcome mr. Trump and we welcome the president and, in fact, we think everyone would benefit from having more of our leaders see louisiana. Today there was an estimate that as many as a third of the homes in this area were impact impacted in flood zones. Its true that a picture is not worth a thousand words. The magnitude of the devastation is something you really have to come here to see. So we are not here to say we think the president should have come. We are glad he is coming. We are not here to say who got here first. We need all these leaders here. Right, but nevertheless, the call was pretty specific editorially for the president to cut his vacation short. Sure, he is coming, and its important to come than not to come at all. Desend secretary jeh johnson to go in his stead but was that good enough . No. Our feeling is that this is a crisis that calls for president ial leadership and were glad to see the president is coming. Now, tell us about the people of louisiana, you know, some the struggles that they are going through but definitely resilient hearts, im sure. Yes, they are. And we are helping each other. We are getting homes for each other. The magnitude of this crisis is, i dont think people fully appreciate. This is the biggest Natural Disaster of the second obama term, really. The biggest disaster since hurricane sandy. And i really want to reiterate that seeing it is understanding it. So true. I covered katrina and survived katrina and i remember when 100 members of congress came to see the damage from katrina and new orleans benefited from that and so did congress. Right. When you think about it, mr. Kovach, when you look at the juxtaposition, the images that our viewers see there on the screen of louisiana just ravaged by this devastation and this disaster and then you see the images of the president golfing, i think its tough when people are suffering. Well, we were fairly forceful in saying that the president should come here and we are glad he is coming here. All right. Well, what would you like to say to the president . What is the thing you need most there for help . You know, ultimately, we are going to need help building Flood Control structures that can withstand this kind of flood. And i think also residents are going to need help with rebuilding. A lot of this area is not in an area raided as an area thats supposed to flood. In many ways the federal government told residents that they didnt need to buy Flood Insurance and now we cant have the federal government telling residents that they are not going to be helped because they didnt have Flood Insurance. Thats a great point. They will have to have the legal system work that up. Meantime people are definitely suffering and make sure this does not happen again. Peter kovach, thanks so much for spending time with us tonight. And this is a fox news alert. Secretary Hillary Clinton ordered by a federal judge to answer questions from a conservative watchdog about her use of a private email server. Judicial watch has sued the forecast over access to records about clintons time as secretary of state Judicial Watch must submit its questions boy october 14th. And secretary clinton will have 30 days in which to respond in writing. And we are seeing a new donald trump both yesterday and today. Trump stayed on message. Is this trump here to stay . Thats next. Also lyin lochte olympic swimmer coming clean and apologizing. Beyond has a natural grain free pet food committed to truth on the label. When we say real meat is the first ingredient, it is number one. And we leave out corn, wheat and soy. For your pet, we go beyond. A change in the Trump Campaign. Donald trumps Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort resigning earlier today but the changes started earlier this week with the addition of steve bannon and Kellyanne Conway and last night a possible turning point. We heard donald trump take on a new tone out on the campaign trail. I have a message for the terrorists trying to kill our citizens. We will find you. We will destroy you and we will absolutely win and we will win soon. She and barack obama unleashed isis whether you like it or dont like it, whether you want to hear it or dont. Thats what happened. Sometimes in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you dont choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. I have done that and believe it or not, i regret it. Well, will we see more of this donald trump . The on the record Political Panel is here with excitement. From the wall street journal jason riley and from real clear politics Caitlin Huey Burns. What do you think . Im still smiling after dr. Carson. Well, tough habits are hard to break. We all know that its can he sustain it . I think thats what people are going to look for. A speech or two does not a political makeover make. We have to see if can he do this. There is only an upside to it i dont think is he going to lose supporters. I think his core supporters are dug. In can he expand his appeal by changing his tone . Not just build a wall but build a bridge indeed. Ryan . I agree. I think there is more to be seen whether he cannot only continue this but whether voters are willing to give him a second look. Whether these numbers pertaining to his temperament. Pertaining to his likability and other items, whether those are baked in or whether there is time to change. There are only 80 days to go. And this kind of shakeup of this magnitude is significant. But i agree if he can stay on message, he seems to have found a hybrid of sorts in terms of this new campaign team. It seems like i was speaking earlier, jason, meaning, you know, just having conversation on television with eric trump and they seem very optimistic and feel very focused and happy. They said they were happy to have Paul Manafort do what did he for them in terms of primaries and dels. They have kelly ann. They feel very comfortable working with her and taking it to that next level, you know, in the final stretch. And what do you think about how the trumps demeanor, his relative ease with giving these speeches that tonight was excellent in terms of his delivery as well . Well, i think on the issues, he is fine. Is he doing well on the issues. The question is can he get out of his own way . And make this campaign about Hillary Clinton and her character and the issues and not about his personal character. He has been his biggest barrier to doing that so, again, its just a question of whether this is a permanent change and not something temporary,
