You can probably ask the judge there. Its whatever the white House Attorneys can get the special counsel to agree to. Whatever you can negotiate usually works best in legal circles. In circumstances like this. Lets be clear as you pointed out, the president would like to have the maximum protection from any possible exposure. What that means is, he probably want the conversation such as it is, maybe partially written unrecorded and certainly not under oath.
