Cooperation, trade and north korea, in particular the fate of a pair of japanese hostages held by the regime. They are ready to break for lunch. Tpp and trade almost certain to come up in the conversation in particular tpp. You and i have talked about that at length since this president s come into office, hes made it very clear hes not a very big fan of the multinational trade deal. Let me tell you what he had to say about it. He said, listen, while japan and south korea would like us to go back into tpp, i dont like the deal for the United States. Due to contingencies and no way to get out if it doesnt work. Bilateral deals are far more efficient, profitable and better for our workers. Look how bad wto is to u. S. So while Prime Minister abe may not convince our president to rejoin the multinational pacific trade deal, he is hoping that mr. Trumps tone in his meeting coming up with kim jongun, per happens in june, will reflect the longstanding relationship with tokyo. Japan and ourselves are locked and we are very unified on the subject of north korea. We will probably be, depending on various meetings and conversations well be having meetings, with kim jongun very soon. It will be taking place probably in early june or before that. Reporter maybe a little bit before that. Now, at issue is, of course, all in addition to the broader nuclear problem. Also want to talk about the fate of those short range missiles in north korea. The kind that can strike anywhere in japan, but might not be able to reach the u. S. Mainland. Now, the summit that weve been talking about comes as the news unfolds about the cia director and secretary of state nominee mike pompeo and a visit with north korean officials. Weve had talks at the highest level. Lets leave it a little bit short of that. But we have had talks at the highest level. And its going very well, but well see what happens. Reporter okay. So well see what happens, dana, as you know is a bit of code for, were not promising major deliverables on this. Certainly not beforehand and maybe not even after. But they remain cautiously optimistic, especially if something can happen in the interim. Maybe you can come to an agreement on something. That is something they would like to look forward to, but they dont want to oversell in the mean time. Dana, back to you. Dana all right, kevin. Thank you. As we wait for the president s working lunch to get under way, the administration and Top Republicans are working to shore up support for mike pompeo, as democrats threaten to sink his nomination for secretary of state. I cannot imagine that senators like joe manchin from West Virginia and heidi highcamp who are facing reelection in states that our president won by land slide elections are going to oppose an obviously qualified nominee. Mike pompeo will be confirmed. Its a matter of whether they want to confirm him with a large bipartisan majority, with whom weve had political disagreements in the past. Or whether they want to continue playing partisan games. If they do so and theyre up for reelection, they may suffer the consequences. Dana lets go to karl rove former White House Deputy chief of staff and fox news contributor. Karl, debates happen a lot on capitol hill. Obviously, we know that. Confirm eights for secretary of state rarely get this controversial, especially when said nominee was just confirmed last year by the democrats that tom cotton is referring to when he was up for cia director. What do you think will be the end result here . Well, im hopeful pompeo will be confirmed. A president is entitled to his nominees unless theres some enormously disqualifying factor. If there was, we would all know it because it would have had to have emerged in the year since his approval. Look, this is not a good place for washington to be. All those people who voted for president obamas nominees. Even though they have political disagreements with them because they felt president obama was entitled to have his choices for the cabinet that he was responsible for, i hope none of them are regretting having done the right thing then. I hope the democrats who are today threatening to oppose pompeo for nothing other than an impulsive rage against President Trump. Nothing to say about his nominee. Nothing to say about his record. Just simply an act of irresponsible stupidity, in my opinion. I hope they reconsider. Dana we found out late last night, early this morning that mike pompeo has actually gone and met with kim jongun. Take a listen to President Trump and what he said is a possibility here. I think that theres a great chance to solve a world problem. This is not a problem for the United States. Its not a problem for japan or any other country. Its a problem for the world. Dana and now listen, karl, to senators corker and menendez about that. Our contacts with north korea have always been through the intel side. So it was a natural that he be, from my perspective, it was a natural that hed be a person who began some of the conversations. It would have been incredibly not only insightful, but if true and being forthcoming as the secretary of state nominee, one of the standards we like to see from the next secretary of state. Dana karl, mike pompeo is actually the cia director. He is the one that has basically gotten us to the position for President Trump to be able to have a meeting with kim jongun. It would surprise me that democrats want to have this fight right now if we have the opportunity, as a country, to actually perhaps im being cautious. I dont want to oversell it. But the chance to actually help change the situation to get kim jongun possibly to declearize. Do they want to be on the side of opposing somebody who is the point person on this . They shouldnt. Again, its pure politics. Menendez, who mostly is sane and sensible in his approach to foreign affairs, even when he disagrees with republican administrations, i hope he backs off of this. But, lets step back for just a minute on this whole thing with north korea. We do need to remember two things. This is my pompeos presence in pyongyang was so important. We say words and they mean something. To the North Koreans they mean something entirely different. For example, denuclearization to us means they abandon their nuclear program. To the North Koreans, what that means is america abandons its military support with south korea. We say end the war. The korean war never officially ended. And we say end the war so were no longer in a state of armistice, but a state of peace. They say that means u. S. Troops now need to get out of south korea. We need to be careful about this and keep our expectations low and reasonable. Dana before i let you go, we just got a tweet from former president george h. W. Bush. He writes about his wife. I always knew barbara was the most beloved woman in the world and, in fact, i used to tease her that i had a complex about that fact. But the truth is, the outpouring of love and friendship being directed at the enforcer is lifting us all up. We have faith she is in heaven and we know life will go on, as she would have it. So cross the bushes off your worry list. Karl, you knew the bushes early on in your life, in your political career, when you were the College Republican president. Ill give you just a chance to say whatever youd like in the minute that we have. Well, i worked i met her when i was 22 years old and working for then Republican National chairman george h. W. Bush. I lived in fear of her then. I remember being nervous decades later when she would stop by my office at the white house to check in on things. Election night in 2004 i almost wanted to make certain that we won more because it would placate mrs. Bush than it would the president. She was a terrific individual. Fun to be around. Brash. Smart. Wise. Kind. A really remarkable person. In my mind, the great life they had together would have been impossible without that combination. They met at 16. She was in a green and red dress in a holiday party. He couldnt waltz so they ended up not dancing but talking. And they fell in love. What a great story. What a remarkable life. Dana amazing, a 73year marriage. Much more to come. Ill see you at the funeral on saturday. Not a funeral. Its a celebration of life and thanksgiving. Dana absolutely. Thank you for that correction. Sorry. You bet. Dana we will have much more on the extraordinary life of barbara bush. What my next guest said about the values she instilled in her family. Plus, chemical weapons inspectors facing serious hurdles as they try to access the site of the deadly gas attack in syria. What is delaying their arrival. Alright, i brought in high protein to help get us moving. And help you feel more strength and energy in just two weeks ill take that. Yeeeeeah ensure high protein. With 16 grams of protein and 4 grams of sugar. Ensure. Always be you. I knew at that exact moment, whatever it takes, wherever i have to go. Im beating this. My main focus was to find a team of doctors that work together. When a patient comes to ctca, theyre meeting a team of physicians that specialize in the management of cancer. Breast Cancer Treatment is continuing to evolve. And i would say that ctca is definitely on the cusp of those changes. Patients can be overwhelmed. We really focus on taking the time with each individual patient so they can choose the treatment appropriate for them. The care that ctca brings is the kind of care ive wanted for my patients. Being able to spend time with them, have a whole team to look after them is fantastic. I empower women with choices. Its not just picking a surgeon. Its picking the care team, and feeling secure where you are. Surround yourself with the team of Breast Cancer experts at Cancer Treatment centers of america. Visit cancercenter. Com breast Appointments Available now. Dana gun fire at the site of the syrian gas attack delaying the arrival of chemical weapons inspectors. Officials say a u. N. Security crew came under fire yesterday and that the inspectors wont be allowed in until its safe. Its been nearly two weeks since the attack in douma, just east of damascus. Officials say it killed more than 40 people, many of them children. We are continuing to celebrate the life and legacy of former First Lady Barbara Bush. My next guest knew her very well, writing in an op ed on fox news. Com, quote, as a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, she was devoted to her family and as her son, george w. Bush said, she taught us how to live, love and laugh. The Senior Adviser on the Bush InstituteWomens Initiative policy advisory council. Anita, i know this is both personal, but also professional for you. You have studied the role of the first lady. I wonder if you could assess her impact in that role. Thank you, dana. I really appreciate the opportunity to add a tribute to barbara bush. She deserves every single one of them. As a first lady, looking at it objectively, this is a person who wanted to use the opportunity she had to the fullest. She did not waste one minute. In fact, in the early days of becoming first lady, sat down with her staff and said, this is our goal. Every single day i want to do something that helps people. And boy did she do that. And, really, you know, helped to address a number of issues in her own way in our country, whether it was holding an aids baby at a time when people were very fearful about that and what an example that was to start chipping away at the stigma. And then also that address she gave at wellsly commencement in 1990. That was also a statement about feminism. About choice. Her choice was to marry the man of her dreams. She had a joyous life because of it. Dana absolutely. Also just in case people dont know, you were all the chief of staff to laura bush. She spoke to Maria Bartoromo earlier. She was warm and wonderful until you got out of line. And she was warm and wonderful. She was funny and fierce and said her mind. She was a great role model for me for sure. I learned how to be a first lady. Dana i wonder if you could comment on that, about laura bush saying that barbara bush was really her role model. I can understand that. Kind of dont know what to do in the role. But having seen it up close and personal like that, she was able to carry it out wonderfully. Im so glad that you showed that. Laura bush was very fortunate. She had a role model, someone in her family, that walked this journey and she could really learn from that. So she had an advantage that no other first lady has ever had. But whats so interesting about this, as you know, because at American University i run conferences on the legacies of first lady. Barbara and laura bush, they came together for four of them. And shared the stage together. It was barbara bush who wrote me this note afterwards that she was so grateful to be able to share the stage with laura bush, because she admired her so much for what she did as first lady. Its just incredible. Dana you also wrote in this op ed that you have on fox news. Com, when my son was about to graduate high school and looking at colleges, she offered him invaluable advice over lunch. Shoot high, dont use drugs and dont lie. The latter, she said ruined Richard Nixons reputation and hurt the presidency. She sort of used her position to give people life advice, but she didnt do it with too heavy a hand. Absolutely. Think about that. A kid having the benefit of the former first lady of the United States, a member of our warm inner circle, as you know. You were part of it. Offering up this message that just make great choices in your life. Something that i could say to him or my husband could say to him and andrew wouldnt listen to me quite the same way. My younger one was sitting there, too. Believe me, were going to be walking through the College Process with her, too. Dana youll remember that. Yes, of course. It was really a joyous time for us to learn from her. Dana Anita Mcbride, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us today. Thank you, dana. Dana so, its the end of an era in cuba, after nearly 50 years. We have a live report from havana after raul castro steps down as president. Plus more midterm mania as democrats hope to ride a blue wave into power, but what obstacles are in their way . Well discuss. You know whats awesome . Gigspeed internet. You know whats not awesome . When only certain people can get it. Lets fix that. Lets give this guy gig really . And these kids, and these guys, him, ah. Oh hello. That lady, these houses yes, yes and yes. And dont forget about them. Uh huh, sure. Still yes xfinity delivers gig speed to more homes than anyone. Now you can get it, too. Welcome to the party. Dana now to midterm mania and the bat toll control Congress Amid projections of a blue wave. The gap is narrowing. The real clear politics average shows democrats ahead by just five point, 5. 5 points on the generic ballot. However, in the critical state of pennsylvania, voters favor the democrats by nine points in a new poll. Im joined by meredith kelly, Communications Director for the Democratic Congressional campaign committee. Thanks for joining me. You guys have a campaign to try to move red states to blue. Hows that stand right now . Well, hi, dana. Thanks for having me. Today we just added five additional Democratic Candidates to a program called red to blue which makes approximately 40 Democratic Candidates on this program. Thats about double how many there were at this time in 2016. And this is really exciting because i think it speaks to the larger point that we are building the largest offensive battlefield in a decade and filling it with incredible candidates that have records of service. Dana you have here i was going to go through a couple of them, maybe you could explain why you think theyre great for your campaign. Ken harbaugh in ohio. Well, sure. Ken is a veteran. Hes turned around and spent the rest of his life helping other veterans be employed and help to serve our country through team rubicon. Hes running a Campaign Based on accessibility, Holding Town Halls and promoting his plan to bring more jobs and better wages to ohio. Hes also raised over 1 million. So hes running a strong campaign. Dana thats a lot of money. I dont have time for all of these but Juanita Perez williams in new york. A veteran. Have you been looking to recruit more veterans . Three of five of the additions today are veterans. You picked up on the trend here. Thats true well beyond todays addition. We believe that recruiting veterans, prosecutors and people with these independent records of service to our country are going to play a really Critical Role in our ability to win 23 seats and win back the house. They bring stability. They bring expertise that honestly lot of voters feel is lacking here in washington. Dana some leadership qualities. I did want to bring up josh croshires op ed. His headline was how democrats could squander their advantage. He writes, as critical as progressive engagement is to their success, democrats dont need to do much more to rally their base. Trump has single handedly achieved that task for them. The bigger risk is that the Progressive Energy in the party forces candidates to take out of the main stream positions on issues that will help republicans turn out their voters. I wonder about that. The two that we highlighted and you said three or four out of five are veterans, are they progressive enough for the mood of the Democratic Party . And if people get too progressive in a Democratic Party, does that then run the risk of republicans turning out and beating
