And when you bring these veterans together every year, what is it like . It is not an easy ride. Its a pretty tough ride. Weve got great trails here and if they want to ride the tough trails, they can and if they dont, they dont have to. I ride the tough ones but im getting older than i used to be. I am slowing down some. But it is a wonderful experience and we will have a big dinner tonight, some of the best will share their stories. The key thing is thats helping vets transition from military life to civilian life. This is kind of a peer to Peer Counseling Group and we call it team 43. Today, weve got new members here and firsttime riders than tomorrow, a bunch of returnees and it is my way of honoring the veterans who have served our country. Dana what else do you do have the Bush Institute for veterans . One thing that i think is impressive is the focus on helping people with posttraumatic stress. That is the key thing. The key thing on posttraumatic stress is to convince a vet they have a problem in the best way to do that is to hang out with other vets who are dealing with the same problem. Thats what i meant by peer to peer counseling. So once a vet recognizes they need help, we help them find a place that will fit their needs. Thats really what this is. This is a way to help people recover from the invisible wounds of war. And we have fun and try to act young. Dana i know you do the bike ride as well as the golf tournament. When you talk to veterans, some of them youve even painted, what is your message to them or for those who are watching today that might wonder if they could do Something Like this one day . The key thing for people watching is if you know a veteran who seems to be dealing with posttraumatic stress, get somebody to counsel them to get help and remind them that it is just as courageous as going into combat to say i need help with posttraumatic stress. In thats really the best thing people can do. There are a lot of programs out there that can help with the key thing is to get to people to the programs. These vets are so gracious people and grateful people and they love the country. You Say Something about you regret doing what happen to you and have to do it again, its a remarkable experience to hang out with them. Dana one of the things you have stressed as president as we are in a generational war against terrorism. It has been 18 years since 9 11 and those attacks which really changed americas focus setting the country on a different way to deal with terrorism and taking the fight to the enemy and of course, albaghdadi who has just killed after our commander in chief did the order, special forces went in, they got albaghdadi and i thought about you in terms of that generational war on terror, is that something you talk about those veterans . First of all, they dont need to be convinced that they are doing a necessary thing to protect the country. I was just talking to some, a nice barbecue here by the way. Talking to a fellow and he was talking about how working with our allies in the middle east, they were able to track down some of these extremists and they are no longer capable of harming america, so he understood the nature of the conflict, most of these groups to understand the nature of the conflict and i talked about when i was president , it was going to be a long conflict in the United States has got to stay engaged and keep the pressure on in order to protect their own homeland. Dana i thought maybe i would ask you about something that happened in 30 years ago when your father was president , former president george h. W. Bush when the berlin wall fell and where were you that day or what you remember about that and how that set the course for a different type of world in terms of globalization if it hadnt moved forward and how you see that looking back and even looking forward . I cant remember what i was doing, but i can remember who was there and that was george h. W. Bush did a masterful job of working with allies to create peace or the opportunity for peace. One of the things that impressed me when i think about that issue is that when the wall went down, he chose not to go and gloat. He displayed a great sense of humility which i think reflected well upon our country and no question, unified germany has helped lead to more peaceful europe and is one of his proud accomplishments. Dana what about as a grandfather, we are in a country that as you always reminded me, we are not as polarized as we have been in our past and everything is going to be okay, democracy is selfhealing so you have an optimistic attitude but going forward, you have long talked about the concerns for the country to make sure that you stay engaged with your country, be an active participant and support our military and our veterans in order to preserve what our Founding Fathers helped create in the first place. Thats right. I am optimistic about the future because democracy is selfhealing. Is an unsettled period in our country but it isnt the first time we have had unsettled periods. I wont be around to see my grandkids thrive and prosper but i am convinced the world will be entering into will be unique in the fall of all kinds of possibilities. You have people who have served this country well in various administrations and have never been found to be partisan at all saying that they had serious concerns about the president.
