President clinton e [ explosions ] groups of hostages seen running for their lives. Grn reporter roger may snared in sydney after this all unfolded. What can you tell us . The incident came to a climate about three or four hours ago in the central sydney, the business district. There were gunshots. There was explosives in the area. Suddenly, all hell broke loose, there were a number of hostages escaping from the cafe where the siege was being held. There were people being carried on stretchers. One of the hostages ran all the way down to the street with blood covering his face. There were a fleet of ambulance standing by to take the injured to hospital and certainly, everybody was taken for medical treatment. Not all of them were injured. The we know that there three dead, including the gunman himself. And another two people, a man and a woman were slightly injured. But it was a violent and bloody end to a terrible incident which is so rare in a place like australia. Yeah, no document i know that its a Standard Operating Procedure for people who deal in this type of hostage situation on a regular basis that they usually dont storm into any kind of environment like that unless they believe that the hostages are in mortal danger. What are you hearing about that . Yeah, thats very interesting point. Because earlier today, sydney time, the police chief here saying they were in no mood to rush this. They didnt want to harm negotiations. Their main aim was to resolve this siege peacefully. And it would take however long it took to achieve those ends. Something happened to force the police to enter the cafe, whether they feared some of the hostages were being shot because there was the sound of gunfire at the beginning of all of this. That may have been the motivation. But the full analysis of this incident has yet to take place and theres still many, many unanswered questions. No doubt. Roger maynard, live for us on the scene in sydney, australia. Thank you, sir. For more, lets bring in greg keely, retired Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Australian navy and former counterterrorism adviser to the Australian Federal police. Great to have you on the real story today. I know you have an interesting theory about this gunman and what you his true motivations might have been. What . Well, gretchen, thank you for having me on, firstlism i think its important to understand the geography of where this attack took place. Right by that coffee shop is the reserve bank of australia. In fact, its in the same building. The reserve bank, of course, is exactly the same inns duke as the Federal Reserve here in the United States. A block away is the premieres office, which is the same as having the governor of new yorks office down the street. The three or four major bank in australia all within a block, as is the u. S. Consulate it strikes me that this individual, this islamist terrorist was busted, if you like, by the female citizen, civilian that called the police and fled, rightly so. He then had to adapt his plan and look at a target of opportunity, a soft target, and regrettably for the folks in that cafe, that was the soft target. Very, very interesting analysis there. So, theres so much being made of the fact that, you know, this is one guy, that he is a lone wolf, but you think there may have been others potentially . Well, potentially, gretchen. We dont know obviously. I dont think we will know for some time. Everything points to this guy being a solo operator. He didnt seem very organized. He obviously hadnt done any preattack planning on that cafe or people wouldnt have been able to find points of egress and escape. The what suggests to me that perhaps there may be a second or a third or he had backing is simply that the target i think he was probably looking at was either the Federal Reserve bank, maybe the Premiers Office and you cant really go after Something Like that solo or with no planning much i think this was an onthefly attack when he couldnt when it became apparent to him that he couldnt actually reach his intended target. Wow, it will be very interesting to see if that actual lives the plan and what comes out in the coming hours after all of. This just was asking Roger Maynard on the ground there that it seems to be that, you know, all of a sudden, the Police Determine that they had to go in and we heard all of that gunfire for 30 to 45 seconds, what do you make, what do you think was happening . Why did they do that . Gretchen, you one thing we need to think about is the police have had, you know, 16 or 17 hours to plan this operation. Theres three options in a situation like this. When you have an islamist terrorist that this isnt a bank robbery where the guy just found himself in a bit of a pickle. This guy is an islamist terrorist and he is not going to negotiate out theres three ways here that this can go. He can get talked out, he can negotiate. Hand over the hostages, surrender. Let the court does their work. That wasnt going to happen. Option two he gets taken out by a surgical strike, which might be a sniper bullet through the plate glass window, apparent that wasnt an option and i think there was a worry that he actually was made up for explosives. The third option is to go in with that shock and awe approach, where they storm the building. That leaves four components, needs to be fast, it needs to be a surprise, and it needs to be very, very violent. And thats exactly what they did here. And its terribly unfortunate and a tragedy that innocent people were killed here but those guys on the ground, the special air service, the Australian FederalPolice Counterterrorism guys are some of the best in the world that end would not have gone in there unless there was a clear and apparent danger to, you know, that big group of hostages. Greg keelly, thank you for your expertise on this topic today. Thank you, sir. Time now for my take. What happened in australia may feel far away but is oh so close to home. Emblematic of the new kind of isisirspined terror. Because its a lone wolf or one terrorist maybe acting alone should in no way minimize the impact this kind of terror can have. It can be harder to root out and certainly keeps us all on edge because we dont know where or when the smaller types of attacks will take place. Just this past september, australia got intel that isis supporters were planning to seize a random member of the public and behead them live on camera. The country decided to be proactive in changing its laws to cancel the passports of 75 australians who had traveled overseas to join isis. So far, the u. S. Has not takenny new action regarding passport laws, should we no you last week, president obama finally asked congress for new military authorization to deal with isis inside of iraq and syria. Todays attack in australia should make us all realize theres no time to waste in making crucial decisions to keep us safe. Lets move into the political arena, shall we, back here at home . Jeb bush announcing he will release an ebook and 250,000 emails about his years as governor of florida. And revealing it wont mean much longer before he makes a big decision on whether or not to run for president. The former governor saying over the weekend that America Needs someone with big ideas and he weighs the pros and cons, as he does that, mr. Bush says he thinks that almost daily about mitt romneys 2012 campaign. And he got into sucked into the, you know vortex. And sucked into other peoples agendas and i think about this almost daily. I think mitt romney would have been a spectacular president in this time. And he was proven right in a lot of his beliefs and ideas shortly after the election as well. Chris tire is walt is fox news digital politics editor and may guest today. All right, so, he is releasing all these emails and an ebook, he is gonna run, right . Well, he didnt tell me. I dont know. Come on. Yes this is what somebody does when they are when they are going to run. This is the action of somebody who is making ready for a president ial run and certainly, he has made no secret about the fact that he is weighing it and we have reported before that his people, cause remember, its been a long time, since 2002, that jeb bush ran a successful campaign, ran any campaign in 2002 for second term of governor of florida so they are trying to get it back together, trying to get the band back together, they are checking it out to see whats going on out there but this, and sitting down for that interviewed and the speech he is giving in South Carolina today are all provocative acts, those are all the acts of somebody who has gone beyond letting somebody else test the waters for them and they are testing the waters themselves. So, what do you make about team bush and then a possible team romney again . Would there be beef between those two teams . I think we got beef. I think beef is present when you notice the careful language that mitt romney would be a good president at this time. That doesnt mean that he is saying mitt romney would be a good president at any time but at this time, he thinks would be a good president and also points to failures on romneys part to hold true to his message but this comes on the heels, as it does, of romney camp putting out language poohpoohing jeb bush as he gets into the banking realm and the romney world, being dismiss sive of him in terms of his financial acumen and economic prowess. So, they are at each other a little bit. If they are at each other what about the dollars . Because would they be going after the same political donations . Well, in an odd way, conservative republicans ought to hope they both run if they do those two more moderate candidates, they would split the donor pool in the northeastern United States and west coast of moderate republicans who are looking for a moderate candidate that will appeal to centrist voters. That would leave a space in between, while those two elephants were crashing into each other, rhinos, their critics would say crashing into each other, that would leave space for somebody to get between, actually make would actually reduce the power of the numberen establishment because it would be divided. Very interesting analysis. Chris tire is walt, thanks for kicking off the week with us. Have a good one. You bet. Killing spree leads to a tense standoff right here in the u. S. Today as well. This one overseas as well, unfolding in belgium. This siege ending after special forces stormed an apartment in the went city of gent there, where there men were holding another man hostage the three suspects have been taken into custody, police saying that the incident this one is not terror related. And no one was hurt. Time for some real talk now on the irs targeting scandal and brand new developments. Newly released emails exposing collusion between the irs and the department of justice. They are part of a trove belonging to lois learner which the irs claimed were all missing. The emails talk about efforts to bring criminal charges against conservatives and Tea Party Groups so could this now be evidence of a coverup by the Obama Administration . Robert wood is managing partner at wood almost lp and my guest today. Robert, great to have you on the show. I want to get to that. Thank you. I want to get to that big question after i ask you this first. What has been revealed now that lois learner was communicating with the department of justice before the midterm elections in 2010, correct . Thats right. And what do we make of that . Well, i think people some groups the administration and certainly liberal organizations are saying this doj does this kind of thing all the time theres nothing improper about it. I think we truly dont know the content of many of these communications, they are still being analyzed and i think they are two separate things. One is certainly the concern, as you just noted, that lois learner and department of justice officials were talking about prosecuting conservative groups but also the notion that taxpayer private data has apparently been released between the irs and the white house. We still dont know the details. I mean, these are literally things that are happening this week and hopefully, well get to the bottom or at least more to the bottom of this scandal that should make every american taxpayer worried. I was just going to ask you that. Certainly the department of justice not helping matters, theism rs not helping matters. Simply say things disappear in thin air and dont seem to care that much about t thank goodness for groups like Judicial Watch who sued them repeatedly to try to get some of these documents. You bring up the most important here, that every american, i dont care if they are independent, democrat or republican, why should they care so much about this . Yeah, really, i have to say and i know the internet sometimes is not the most civilized police to communicate, but in the postings that ive done on forbes. Com on the irs, and i have to stress, im just a practicing tax lawyer, for 35 years doing this and i have never seen a i think a crisis in confidence in our tax system as great as it is now. Why should every american care . Simply we all send in private information, all send in our financial data, we send the irs money. You know, the tax system is still mostly selfassessed. We all do it. And audit rates are low. And the irs has all of this data. We need to know that our political views are not going to influence whether they are audited and are not going to be turned over to the executive branch of the government. So in the leadin before i introduced you, robert, the question was raised, could this be evidence finally of some sort of a coverup by the Obama Administration . And to that you would say what . I would say it could be, yes. I want to be careful not to overstress and sort of overreact to. This i find it appalling but i think a lot of us found sort and i hope every american, liberal or conservative, found it troubling that the president in february on fox said there is not a smidgen of corruption and so on in the irs scandal, the irs is fine, theres nothing and there have been a lot of statements about liberal groups targeted. We still dont know but absolutely, this should be investigated. No document and there are renewed calls for a special prosecutor. I know thats politically sensitive i shall a you, and lots of other problems in the country, but i mean, our tax system is really key. We cant survive without it. Yep. And it really has been undermine bid all of. This. It is coming out in drips and drabs, more to come out later this week. Robert wood, thank you so much for your time today.
