Watch. We therefore wish to work on a new deal. I therefore would like us to commit to the United States in the weeks and months to come. Martha wanting to work on a new deal. The president doing his part to pull our troops out of syria. Listen carefully here. We are knocking the hill out of isis. Let the other people take care of it now. Well see what happens, but we are going to be coming home relatively soon. Martha note the new phrase there, relatively soon. What does that mean . General jack kelly, Mark Theissen will join us. Its hard to imagine anything that is more pressing them the Nuclear Threats from iran and north korea and the instilled instability in syria which puts the u. S. At odds with russia and the middle east. That is what our two countries, france and the United States, are discussing here at the white house for the past couple of days. The stakes are enormous. The chief National Correspondent ed henry live at the white house to break it all down. Hi. Good to see you. The stakes cannot be any higher for these two leaders because you have the fact that irans foreign minister warned on sunday if the u. S. Pulls out of the nuclear deal, iran will speed up its nuclear activities, but what President Trumps critics dont seem to realize is that there appears to be an emerging pattern here with this negotiating strategy that may actually be working. Remember, when the president amped up the rhetoric on north korea and threatened to fire in syria, his critics thought he was bringing america to the brink of nuclear war. Kim jong un has now come to the table announcing hes freezing nuclear and missile testing. Now there may be the makings of a breakthrough in iran from todays talks. The president declaring the 2015 nuclear deal is insane and he wants to scrap it. Adding if iran restarts, theyll have bigger problems than they had before. Well french president Emmanuel Macron still supports the original deal, he unveiled what seems like a compromise today as President Trump faces his deadline on whether to wage sanctions against iran or just get out of the deal altogether. Mccrone saying he wants to build on the agreement instead of throwing it out. This is a deal with decayed foundations. Its a bad deal, a bad structure, its falling down. If iran threatens us in anyway, they will pay a price like few countries have ever paid. Its about building a stable framework that will contribute to the stability. Its not about securing a policy agreement, but its about building something new that will quell all of our concerns. These two men help build some reporter rapport after working together. Mr. Trump saying he wants to make decisions in a very short period of time while mr. Macron saying he wants some time. There are two options, either keep the obama deal or scrap it altogether. The significance today, macron seems to be opening the door to a third way. Martha thank you very much. We are watching as you see the red carpet rolled out at the white house, so were going to go back and forth here with the live events unfolding at the white house. I want to bring in general jack keane, senior strategic analyst and chairman of the institute for the study and four channels. As i mentioned at the opening of the show, the stakes are huge and these are two of the most important players in the future of the Nuclear Status of north korea and iran. Most definitely. Let me go back over when i think is really happening here when it comes to the iran nuclear deal. Macron and the president do not like the deal. Both of them are wanting to fix it with a supplemental, whether it be the European Countries or the United States and they both make the assumption that if theyre able to do that, the iranians would stay in the deal. Mostly for economic reasons. However, if they couldnt get the supplemental, macron wants to stay in the deal anyway despite his imperfections. The president will mix it and he will no longer waive sanctions come may 12 or if he drags it out a little bit longer. What theyve been working on for weeks now is the fact that the United States diplomat and europeans have been working on this supplemental. Theres three things that theyre dealing with, two of which they agree on. One is prohibition on Ballistic Missile testing. Two is access to the secret military site for full inspections. Both of those are not in the deal presently. We have agreement on those two. What we dont have agreement in is on the sunset clauses which permits iran in ten years, 2015, excuse me, 2025 to get to a Nuclear Threshold and five years later, a pathway to a nuclear weapon. The three European Countries do not agree with us that we want to extend that clause indefinitely. We want to remove the sunset nature of that clause. Thats kind of where we stand right now. Im hoping that director pompeo gets confirmed quickly and he can put his weight into these negotiations with our three european allies to see if we can fix it. If not, for sure we are heading for a termination. Martha we are turning to north korea for a moment. Heres President Trump. Watch from today. What does that mean exactly . It means they get rid of their nukes. Very simple. They get rid of their nukes. Martha the president s of today, general jack keane, that we have made no conceptions of so far in advance of this meeting and that the North Koreans have made many. Whats your take . I think hes absolutely right. First of all, this does feel a little different to me because of a number of concessions that the North Koreans have made and the diplomatic blitz that theyve been on since the olympics. Setting up the talk with the moon and President Trump. All that said, they have always used negotiations to take advantage of their position and primarily to ease up and concession. He is going to ease up on conceptions and the table. I know for a fact that the trump team will not buy that unless they have absolute commitment and evidence that they are dismantling their nuclear program. We have a pretty firm position, certainly we will throttle back a little bit on that if that evidence is there. Also, we want our americans out of north korea, but that will not get us a deal. Thats sort of like stuff one of good faith in terms of negotiations. Martha i feel strongly that mike pompeo should be approved and able to get to work on it. Thank you so much to make it to you tonight. On the righthand side of your screen, the red carpet rolls out and we are waiting for the french president and his wife. She will arrive at the white house for the very first trump state dinner. We saw some of the guests arriving earlier, henry kissinger, don fulton and their wives are ride, ivanka trump we saw walking in. Well keep you posted on some of those arrivals that you can see. While we are watching all of this pomp and circumstance, lets bring in Marc Thiessen former chief speechwriter for president george w. Bush, also a fox contributor and liza fisher. She helped implement the iran deal. During the course of the campaign, one of the things that Hillary Clinton was arguing is that President Trump wanted to ramp up this around deal and you are one of the people who helped do all of those lead up negotiations to make this deal happen and yet, you feel it sounds to me like you now agree with President Trump that he is right to want to make changes. I think its really important to say that the deal is working. The inspectors have said that multiple times. There is good reason to make sure that we preserve this deal because its working. We actually want to know one thing that general keane was saying, its also really important to see what the deal actually covers. The issue about those inspectors having access to military sites, they already do. The protocol allows them to have access to all sites declared and undeclared, civilian or militar military. We want to keep this deal, but of course its always more important to get concessions from iranians. I would love to see the iranians curtail their Ballistic Missiles program and i think theres a bigger deal to be had where they could curtail their Ballistic Missiles program in exchange for the u. S. Relaxing its remaining sanctions. Martha you always hear the president talk about the billions that went over as part of this deal and he believes they have continued their state sponsor of terrorism, that they have used that money we gave them. He thinks this is a bad deal. What do you think about what we saw today and heard from the french president and President Trump . I think hes made some breakthroughs with the french president and would be good if we get there front of the europeans on board to close up some of the loopholes in this deal. This deal is worse than bill clinton cut with the North Koreans in 1984 because back then, the North Koreans had to develop nuclear weapons. Here the iranians dont have to cheat because it doesnt shut down any of their nuclear sites, they are allowed to continue to do modernizing of their reactors and theres no restrictions on Ballistic Missiles. With the sunset clause, they have to keep trucking along as they are with their Ballistic Missiles and they can break out of the Nuclear Power where they can hit israel and other places. The other big part of the deal is that this is supposed to be a new era in a relationship with iran and change irans behavior. Look at their behavior around the world. Their funding terrorists across the world, they are continuing to hold american hostages. They just syndromes from syria over israeli territory. Thorough testing Ballistic Missiles that can reach israel, they are funding and army in syria that is supposed to cause terror, if thats a success, i dont know what failure is. Martha thats a great point. Why jay, what you think it was interesting is that President Trumps fixation on tearing up the nuclear deal has actually distracted him from pushing back against iran in the region. With President Trump and National Security advisor john bolton and secretary of state now many mike pompeo actually wanted to push back on iran, there is a set of steps they would be taking. They would be cutting off irans air, sea, and land access to its proxies which they used to send materials and personal. They would be keeping iranians from building up of presence on israels border. They would be reducing the irg sees grip on the economy which is an important source of funding and yet, we dont see the administration doing any of that because they are fixated on ripping up the nuclear deal deal. You just described the obama policy. Obama was so fixated on reaching this deal with the iranians that he completely took his foot off the gas on all those other things she just described. They were bending over backwards in order to get this deal and turn a blind eye to the point that they sent over 150 billion in unmarked bills on a plane to iran. The idea that trump is distracted by the iran deal, thats the obama policy described in a nutshell. Martha youre both pointing out something thats wrong with the deal which is at didnt have any impact on behavior, it allowed them to still act as a proxy in yemen and syria. It was very isolated in terms of what it addressed, yj and thats the problem at the presidencies. The deal that you helped construct is why we are in this box. I think its true that this is a deal that is only aggressive for a nuclear program. Im not saying the Obama Administration complemented it with an aggressive regional approach. Its that approach were missing from a Trump Administration. One thing the Obama Administration definitely recognizes about the potential for a nuclear deal is that it could weaken the grip within the country. Ripping up the deal would embolden iran quite significantly. Regardless, it needs to be complemented by a strong, regional approach and thats something we should all be asking the Trump Administration to put forward. Martha i want to change gears as we wait and watch this. Its about 14 minutes after the hour in the white house is going to get started with the dinner at 7 00. Maybe some base having a tough time getting ready for the evening. I went to ask about an issue. The president spoke with his personal doctor who he has proposed as head of the va which is one of the most important fundamental things he wanted to fix in his presidency. He talked about doing better by our veterans on the campaign trail. He proposed admiral Ronnie Jackson for this position and the president came out of a meeting and said he was way to stand by him. What do you think is going on behind all this . I think its good that the president is standing behind Ronnie Jackson. Ive worked with him, i know him, he is a good man and hes the kind of person that we need at the va right now. One of the problems we have, he doesnt have management experience. The last two va secretaries were managers. Ashokan was a Hospital Administrator look at all the problems the va had under their leadership. Ronny jackson was a combat admiral. He was the guy that when the helicopter landed, he stuck his hands in his body and got blood all over his hands trying to save a guys life and stabilize him. He understands the plight of our veterans and a way that no va nominee ever has. I think having Ronnie Jackson, he can surround himself with all kinds of management, but you need a veteran who understands and has seen the trauma that these people have experience on the battlefield who have treated these people, who have literally felt his blood on their hands. Thats the leadership you need at the va and im glad that according to the news reports, hes sticking in it. Hes the right person. Martha the white house senior officials saying he has never even been the subject of an Inspector General review and he will certainly not be railroaded by a better ex colleague who was removed from his job. People are so quick sometimes to decide that someone has to go because something has come up in the process of vetting them. We saw an egregious example of people immediately piling on before there was even priority and with these issues were. Ronny jackson felt he hadnt even seen details on some of the things are being said about him. Sometimes as a grated to pause and take a moment and consider a man who has had a very stellar career and probably deserves a very good, clear look and assessment. Good to see you both tonight. Thank you. As we watch the red carpet this evening at the white house, i am joined now by the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee tennessee senator bob corker. Good to have you with us. Thank you for being here. Everyone says this when i talk to you, but its fact, youve been critical of the president , youve had your ups and downs. When you look at what has appeared to be opened up today come out redoing the iran deal, you talk about sitting down with the leadership in north korea. You basically call this president rash and immature at times, but it seems like hes checking a lot of boxes in terms of foreign policy. Youre the chairman of the Foreign Relations committee. What do you think . I talked to the president this morning before he was getting ready to meet with macron and we talked about the hearing last time for mike pompeo. Im glad youre meeting with north korea and im glad that pompeo is the person to go over and meet. Thats always been our back channel, so im hopeful that something will come out of that. I dont know what the details were today about the iran discussions. I know the big issue to the french, german, and u. K. Leadership has been the holt sunset issue and that is to end the sunset provision. Well see where it goes. I know merkel is coming in in a few days. Between the two of them, we have shared with them that the president will leave the agreement on may 12th with a new Framework Agreement. I believe he will leave it and im hopeful that these leaders will understand that and come around with a Framework Agreement that will be a better situation for our country. Martha the president gestured to president macron today and he said he has a good idea of what im going to do. You think they were talking about leaving the deal . Sure, hes been very transparent about that. I met with him multiple times on this issue. He felt the same way about it as when he was campaigning. They tried to figure out a way to overcome some of the decisions, but i really do believe that if the three countries dont come along with a better Framework Agreement, i believe he is going to leave the deal. Martha your thoughts on what happened last night . Your committee was doing the process of approving mike pompeo for his next position if he is approved by the full senate as a secretary of state and it looked pretty rocky. Some people question tiger burning the whole thing. What you have to say about that . Questioned how i was running the committee . Martha yes, the addition of an event is difficult. Whats your response . Its an outstanding outcome. Al
