They would keep plummeting. Bottoming out september 21 after falling more than 1,367 points. Some 14 . Newspapers and magazines were rife with jarring and pressing headlines talking up or more correctly down any talk of an imminent turn around. Some predicted a years long recession or worse. Others saw a dismal fate for this bastion of capitalism. If the perpetrators of an attack thought that they had hollowed out capitalism, they were mistaken, very mistaken. Consider this. Since september 10th, 2001, the last normal day of trading before 911, the dow has soared more than 260 . The s p, 308 . The nasdaq, 711 . A new thing called the nasdaq 100 more than 1,000 . Airline and bank stocks that had been down to near pennies on the dollars come back too, bumping all in real time. One sector after another surviving and then some. The test of time. That is the flip side of this awful day, tragic to be sure, but the end of america . Tragically off key and that is very much for sure. Today robert f. Kennedy jr. On why this should be a national day of service to our country and why tunnel to towers says today is more about the lives lost that day in this country. The governors of virginia and new york back then on what they feared some of us are forgetting know. And remember when tragedy united a country . God bless america my Home Sweet Home neil why west verge senator joe manchin says we could sure use that comradery now because were running out of money and were running out of time. Welcome, everybody. Im neil cavuto. Glad to have you. I want to thank my colleagues and friends, Charles Payne and sandra smith for all of their help when i was out. Now to the enormity of this day that is still even for me, and i covered it year in and year out since the attacks 22 years ago, we take stock and thought we would let you decide. Are we doing better now . Have we come back enough to really register for everyone in this country . Or do we still have a ways to go . Lets begin with eric shawn at ground zero in new york city. Eric . Hello, neil. Very good to see you on this day 22 years ago, of course, as you said. But sometimes, you know, it doesnt seem as if one day has gone by. Yet again, we saw the familiar somber site. The public officials, the survivors, the family members. The massive uniform Police Officers and firefighters were across the world that have come here on this day to honor those in that emotional somber and searing ceremony that we witness each year on this day. Yet again, they gather to remember the names and those that were killed here. The 3,000 people that were murdered by Radical Islamic Terrorism. As always, and before moments of silence, for when the towers were hit by the airliners and then when the two soaring towers collapsed in to the rubble and dust. Despite the years, the pain and the sorrow for some has certainly not diminished with the passing time. One person that was young, john was 31 years old. He worked at the Financial Services firm cantor fitzgerald. Like 40 of the victims, his remains have yet to be found. His life vanished in that toxic dust. His sister told me that this day always brings the same searing emotions. 22 years is normally a long time. When you list for 22 years with the pain and absence of your loved ones and the horrific memories of that day, its not very long at all. Theres another looming legacy from that day. That is the rising death toll from the 911 related diseases and illnesses. The fdny added 43 names to the Memorial Wall bringing to 341 the number of firefighters whose fallen victim to the dust and the illness from 911 two shy of the 343 that were killed that day. More than 2,835 people have died from 911 related illnesses such as cancer, breathing and digestive problems. More than who were killed on this day 22 years ago, 2,753. Vice president harris was here as well as Florida Governor ron desantis. The governor was invited here by a 911 family group to observe and also pay honor to those that died. Of course tonight, neil, really an emotional and soaring sight. You will see the tribute and light behind me. Those are the two twin beams that evoke the lost twin towers. They soar thousands of feet in the night sky. They will be there all night. You can see it from miles away. Those two beams evoke those two twin towers that were lost. They also are a reminder of, yes, the threat although hopefully diminished that threat from Radical Islamic Terrorism that still does threaten our precious democracy and others around the world. Neil . Neil indeed still, my friend. Thanks, eric shawn. As eric pointed out a lot of unprecedented events 22 years ago today. The fact that the major markets would be shut down for upwards of a week, the longest stretch of no activity in the markets is 70 years at the time. A lot of people wonders what would be like when they finely would reopen. They did on the 17th. They were prepared for the worst. They had a bumpy ride. Take a look. Ladies and gentlemen, our heros will now open the marketplace. Neil as i said, it would be a bumpy open. Stocks would fall 7 . When all was said and done, they had fallen close to another 20 . They managed to recoup a lot of that. But a bumpy recession, which made things more problematic. That was then. Keep in mind about the comebacks been talking about since. Ted weissberg remembers it now. Ted, what do you remember about this period and this shot down and what the terrorists had hoped would be a permanent shut down of capitalism . Well, im quite clear, neil, it never the memories never ever fade. Now 20 some odd years later. Its still tough for me to go over to the World Trade Center even though theres beautiful New Buildings there now. The memories never quite go away. As well, they shouldnt. My biggest fear, by the way, is that as we put more time between 911 and go forward, that it becomes a photo op for many people. The reality is, we should never forget, certainly those there at the time will never forget but everyone should never forget. Our world changed dramatically on that day and never been the same since. We went back to work on september 17. We didnt have any choice. That was our job. The markets had to open. I think everybody was really nervous. There was a lot of hugging, a lot of people just happy to see each other despite of the death and destruction around us. You know, neil, you heard from an early age, when you fall off the horse, you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep going. Im still doing it. Many of my comrades are still doing it. We lived through that. Life goes on. You do the best you can. Neil youre quite right. We can talk about the Financial Capital lost, trillions lost, the planes that didnt fly, resorts that didnt have guests. Everything ground to a halt. It was like covid in a packed period of time. It was sweeping. Yet the one thing i do remember, Financial Capital as you reminded me then and since, you can recoup that. We lost a great deal of human capitol. Some of the finest brains in the financial community. One guest that was with me the day before on the show. We forget what that was like. Waiting for still more news that we didnt get and feared the death toll would be higher because we saw both towers go down and we assumed Tens Of Thousands of casualties. What was that like for you . Well, neil, quite frankly, it was surreal. Unbelievable. You know, unfortunately, we didnt have the luxury of stepping back because we were kind of thrown back in to the mix of things having to go to work. I mean, wall street was, as you see in the photos, was literally a construction site. Death and destruction all around us. You couldnt breathe the air. You can taste the air for months after that. I remember, you know, kind of sadly that they told us all that the all quality was fine. We could go back to work. Now many years later, we learned the air quality was not fine. Going back to work is what we had to do. Im not trying to overdramatize it, but that was our job. The Stock Exchange was then. It continues to be the center of the financial universe in terms of equity trading. We just had to get it done. We did. It was not easy. Quite frankly, in some respects, its still not easy. Its simply just not the same. A lot of friend and acquaintances that were there then are clearly not around anymore. Either they did during the 911 disaster or as a result of disease since then. Ted, a lot of people werent around when 911 happened. My two sons are among them. I always wonder how you talk to your extended family about the significance of that day for a lot of kid and young people in general, it an item in History Books and the impact seeing it again and again should be a reminder of what we went through. It gets more distant as the years go by. Exactly. Of course, this is something that we need to guard against. I happen to have experienced 911 with both my son and daughter who worked with me at seaport then. My daughter is still in the business. My son is not. It interesting. Today jason called me and hes got a son that is 16 in school in florida. The school in florida was doing nothing, nothing as a memory of 911. He was furious. He had written a letter, an email to the hid of the school saying why arent you doing something . At least a flag at half mast or something to remind people of what happened on 911. Thats the risk. Its just a photo op for many people. It was a devastating event, a lot of people died and it changed our world forever. All you have to do is go to the airport. The long lines at tsa. That didnt happen before 911 and its happened every day since and probably never will go away. Neil probably right about that. Thanks, ted. Its an honor knowing you all of these years. Tis weisburg. Were awaiting to hear from the president of the United States. Hes in anchorage, alaska and will address 911. Dan springner anchorage with more on that. Dan . President biden just touched down here about 35 minutes ago. Were expecting him to be on the ground maybe two hours. We got the fiveminute warning that he will be addressing the crowd in a hanger in about five minutes. Well get to hear from him and what he has to say in his remembrance of 911. He will be speaking to about 1,000 Military Personnel and their spouses. Biden is breaking tradition with president s in the past as hes not being at one of the attack sites and hes been taking some criticism from families united, a large group of survivors and families of victims. The white house blames a busy foreign travel schedule. He made his first visit to vietnam sunday where the goal is to strengthen economic ties where he met with vietnams president there. While in hanoi, he made a visit to a memorial for john mccain where he was a prisoner of wore for five long years. That memorial he called mccain a good friend and he said he misses him. As for the events here in alaska, he will be speaking to about 1,000 personnel and the remarks to be about 30 minutes long, this is his first visit to alaska as the commanderinchief. So hes got a lot of people here. You can hear the introduction right now. So the president is about to speak here in alaska. Remembering 911, 22 years later. Neil hang in there. Were waiting to hear from the president. He will address the crowd. Were getting word that the Biden Administration is apparently just now cleared the way for the release of five american citizens detained in iran by issuing what they call a Blanket Waiver for International Banks to transfer about 6 billion in frozen iranian money from qatar without fear of u. S. Sanctions. This is just coming in to our news right right now. The waiver is likely to draw criticism of the president especially from republicans that argue hes doing it with such measures to boost the iranian economy but little to boost our own. Let go to anchorage. Please take your seats. Its our sacred duty to honor the memory of the fallen that fateful day. We honor the innocent lives lost in the carnage, our First Responders that ran in to it and our citizens that went down fighting back. We also honor those that gave their lives in the response to defense of america. From 911 to the precept, over 7,000 members of the military have made the ultimate sacrifice. Over 53,000 were wounded and Hundreds Of Thousands that still bear the internal scars of war. Today we honor them. We honor fathers and mothers who gave sons and daughters. We honor children, many whose only memories, a frame photo of their parent. We honor the brothers and sisters of our armed forces bonded forever through the crucible of combat. On this day, we must continue to honor them all. Through ourselfless service, to our nation and taking care of the families of the fallen. Taking care of our veterans. We must take care of each other and give hope to the hopeless. We must never accept defeat and never quit. We must energetically be ready to fight and win our nations wars. Im proud to serve with all of you. You are americas best. For you had many choices and despite the hazards of our profession, you chose to serve and tell america i got your back. I thank god for you all. May god bless you, god bless our great nation and as we remember our fallen and our commitment to the future, please stand and join me in a moment of silence. [taps playing]. Ladies and gentlemen, please be seated. Good morning. Its an honor to be here. Everyone remembers where they were and when they were doing on September 11th, 2001. For me, i was an Airman First Class serving at my first duty station, altis air force base, oklahoma as a medic. After being stopped in my tracks in disbelief while watching what was unfolding on tv, i remember getting the notification from my supervisor that was being assigned to a search and Recovery Team and that i needed to go home and pack my bags. Our team was leaving that same night in response to the shocking attacks on our country that i just watch unfold mere moments ago. Our team of about 14 personnel boarded a c17 from our home station the night of September 11th. My husband was actually the crew chief on that c17 and sent our team off that night. I didnt know what to expect what we would be doing or how long we would be gone. I knew that we were needed. Our country needed us, fellow americans needed us. And we answered the call to serve. Later i learned that we were headed to fort dix in new jersey to support fema in their search and recovery efforts. We state on site two weeks, prepared to lend a hand in any way that we could. Being on site and seeing the billowing smoke rising from ground zero opened my eyes as a young airman. It left an indelible imprinted, an everpresent reminder of the cherish for freedoms. It made me realize what being a medic and Military Member means and to this day, it continues to drive my desire to serve this great nation. It is now my honor to introduce the 46th president of the United States and our commanderinchief, president joe biden. [applause] thank you, chief Master Sergeant miller for that introduction. And for your service to our nation. Governor dunleavy, good to see you. The governor and i have something in common. Were both from scranton, pennsylvania. I wish i had him playing on my High School Ball club when i was playing. I could have been an allamerican if i had you in front of me. No, representative mary, thank you for speaking. The mayor David Bronson and Major General eifler, i appreciate all you do. And general sacks and the tribal leaders of these sacred lands and all of the families here and distinguished guests. I join you on this solemn day to renew our sacred you. Never forget. Never forget. We never forget. Each of us, each of those precious lives stolen too soon when we were attacked. Ground zero in new york. I remember standing there the next day and looking at the building. I felt like i was liking through The Gates Of Hell it looks so devastating. From where you could stand. Shanksville, pennsylvania, the pentagon in virginia, i spent many 911s on those Hallowed Grounds to bear witness and remember those we lost. Every day, especially the last few days, their memory has been with me. Im just return from the g20 summit in india where we strengthened americas leadership on the global stage followed by a historic trip to vietnam where we transformed our partnership in one of the most critical regions of the world. These trips are an essential part of how were going to ensure the United States is flanked by the broadest array of allies and partners that will stand with us and deter any threat to our security. To build a world that is safer for all of our children. Something that today of all days were reminded of is not a given. Because through this Military Base is located on ground zero, we know the distance did not dull or diminish the pain we felt across the nation of September 11th. Because we know that in this day 22 years ago from this base were scrambled in high alert to escort plays through the airspace. Alaskan communities opened their doors to american passengers. American flags were sold out and placed in front of every home. We know that on this day every americans heart was wounded, yet every big city, small town, suburb, rural town, tribal community, American Hands went up, ready to help where they could. Ready to serve like so many of you here. Ready like chief Master Sergeant taylor here with us today who recently started college when flight 93 went down a few miles from shanksville. She said and i quote, i immediately knew i wanted to sign up and suit up to serve my country. Ready like general eifler who said on that da
