I dont get the whole meeting with the protesters. There was something recently where there was some stuff online saying he met with inmates on rikers island. I dont get either one of those. Hadnt heard that one. Im open to meetings, everybody has meetings, but if youre going to meet with protesters, despite your wouldnt kill you to meet with the police, right . I think its more important to meet with the police. They work for him. They work for him. Theyre not happy. Some of them have said theres a funeral, dont come to it. Severely punished for actions they take. Theres two major issues, stop and frisk has decreased their desire to go out there and really do their job. Looking for bad guys. Looking for guns. The stuff that is stopping and then on top of that, to believe that youre not going to be indemnified or backed by the mayor if you make a mistake, or not even if you make a mistake. The mayor talked about the protests that have gripped new york in the wake of the arrest, subsequent death and then nonindictment of the Police Officer involved in that arrest of eric garner. The mayor had a meeting with one of the groups that has been leading the protests, which hit a peak over the weekend. Some 25,000 protesters on the streets of new york, centering their protests on the Brooklyn Bridge a few yards from me here. Now, the protest for the main part have been very peaceful. But on saturday, a couple of Police Officers were attacked as they moved in to arrest one of the protesters. And mayor deblasio said today that there should be no violence, but he did temper his words to some extent, clearly offering support to Peaceful Protesters and the nypd. Listen here. I think its important to let people have that opportunity to present their concerns, but i also took the occasion to say very clearly that they need to be leaders in making sure there is no violence and need to be leaders in making sure theres respect for our Police Officers who in fact have done an outstanding job of making sure protests were peaceful and orderly.
