Way to heading the justice department. Its too early to make a snap judgment. But almost everyones judgment watching these hearings closely, hes comporting himself very well by challenging the authority of those that ultimately picked him, including president of the United States and others in the administration. Even republicans and democrats on capitol hill who he says he will hear out but not necessarily cater too. Lets get the latest with Catherine Herridge following the developments on capitol hill. Hi, katherine. Were nearly seven hours in the confirmation hearings. One of the main themes from william barr is hes committed to protecting the Russia Special counsel investigation. Any final report he wants to make public to the fullest extent possible. Lets listen. The country needs a credible resolution to these issues. If confirmed, i will not permit partisan politics, personal interests or any other improper consideration to interfere with this or any other investigation. Barr also testified that he has known the head of the special counsel, robert mueller, for three decades and he says that hes a very honorable person and will give the president a fair shake in any final report. He was also asked whether he thought any conditions under which he would terminate the special counsel investigation. Here theyve exchange. Are there any circumstances that would cause you to terminate the investigation . Or any component of it . Or a significantly restrict its funding . Under the regulations, bob mueller could only be terminated for good cause. Frankly, its unimaginable to me that bob would do anything that gave rise to good cause. Democrats pressed william barr on a memo that he sent to the Deputy Attorney general, rod rosenstein, where he said based on media reports, that he felt any obstruction case targeting the president for the firing of fbi director james comey was not on sound legal footing. Heres that exchange. If the president orders the attorney general to halt a yes, i am investigation for personal reasons, would that be prohibited under your theory . I think it would be a breach of the president s duties to faithfully execute the law. It would be an abuse of power. Barr has been attorney general before under george w. Bush 1 and he said at 68, he may be one of the most strongly and qualified candidates because he doesnt need the job and he doesnt necessarily want it at this stage of his life, neil. Neil a good position to be in. Gives you a little bit of umph. Freedom for sure. Neil thanks, Catherine Herridge. William barr testifying that he agreed with the decision to fire former fbi director james comey. Something that he discussed with me a couple days after that firing back in may of 2017. Take a look. Did you believe when you heard some of these reports that what really was irking President Trump is the fact that james comey did not appear to be loyal . That kept coming up in these reports. No, i dont my own view is that there was concern in the administration as there has been among a lot of former people who have served in the department of justice, republican and democrat, that james comey didnt seem to have regard for the traditional limits on the authority of the fbi director and was arrogating to himself powers and authorities of the attorney general. That was the primary concern. I think what essentially may have forced their hand is his refusal to acknowledge that. You know, hes free to do that, but by the same token, the president is understandable that he would want somebody at the fbi that understands his relationship to the department of justice. That was from 2017. May 2017. A couple days after the firing of james comey. With us now, john sale. John, he seems very much to be his own man and he could understand the firing of comey back then. But he seems to call them as he sees them. Am i misinterpreting . What do you think . No, his confirmation is virtually done. When it comes to recuse sal, when senator harris tried to pin him down, hes not recusing himself. Its quite clear what attorney general sessions went through, you have to be on mars to realize that the president is not going to appoint somebody or nominate somebody that he thinks is going to recuse. The way neil he did support at the Time Sessions recusing himself, right . This is a different circumstance. Well, no, the president didnt. Im talking about President Trump did not support it. What he put sessions through, so hes not going to take this job. Ill give you a quick historical parallel. I was part of the watergate prosecution. When Leon Jaworski took the job, he was the same age as bill barr. He was a powerful lawyer. He said ive had a great life. Im going to come in here and do it right. I wouldnt be surprised if the folks that helped him prepare took a chapter out of mr. Jaworskis book. Neil and we go back in time to james comey recusing himself or Jeff Sessions recusing himself. Barr said he accepted that, agreed with that, but he did go on in talking about this investigation, he says hes a good friend of mueller. He came in thinking the investigation itself was fatally miss conceived but that he would wait for its results and apparently do nothing to thwart the release of those results. What did you make of that . He left himself a lot of wiggle room. He said he didnt have the facts. He was a private citizen. It was a theoretical law reviewtype of memo. He said he accepts the ultimate responsibility to make all decisions. So saying the right words. Its not a witch hunt, no political interference. Im not going to be bullied. We have the take him at his word. The way i sum up bill barrs temporary, two ways. Its a home run. Secondly hes saying trust me. Hes earning the trust of the Judiciary Committee and more importantly the American People. Neil so jon when he said that mueller should be allowed to complete his work, complete his investigation, you take him at face value that he would. That these fears that some have on capitol hill that the president will do something to derail it or fire mueller, this is something that this guy wouldnt do. Lets go back to elliot richardson. He promised to the judicialry committee that Archibald Cox would have free independence. Turned out he didnt and that was a political firestorm for the white house. So i think they have learned again from history. He will let hip finish his investigation but then what . What will he do with the record . We dont know. Thats up to him. Let me quickly say, in fairness to the president , the president has a right through his counsel to have his counsel see the record report, to determine if theyre going to assert privilege. We dont know what will happen with the report despite transparency, disclosure. We dont know. Its up to mr. Barr. Neil so once we have a report out, a lot of american taxpayers will say we footed more than 25 million for this so far. We have a right to know what is in it. Is there any possibility from any of the comments you heard from mr. Barr today that would indicate he might hold a great deal back . I think he could hold it back on a legitimate basis. Another thing, were all expecting the record to be a huge report like ken starrs report was. It could be very simple. All hes required to do is say who he is prosecuting and not prosecuting and why. And the latter, may not want who is in there to defame them. Neil and those on capitol hill would be aware enough that its a big deal or not. Democrats could seize on it and begin hearings. One way or not, it would be leaked. Everybody in washington knows that. Neil news to me. No, thank you. Thanks for having me. Neil were monitoring these hearings as they continue hear back and forth here. Theres another Big Development we followed. And the failure right now in the second attempt at the apple to try to get this brexit thing finally done more than 18 months after a 5248 margin voted to separate themselves from the rest of the European Union. They cant get it done. For theresa may, the Prime Minister, she put her reputation and credibility on the line to get it done in an overwhelming defeat, the majority in her party to say nothing of the Opposition Labor Party shelved the deal. There will be a competencesive vote on her tomorrow. Britain is limping along and theres a number of alternatives being discussed. I wanted to show you about our own markets. Whatever ales her majestys kingdom have been helping our markets. The belief being that if europe have falling apart and britain is falling apart and cant leave a club that isnt really firing on all cylinders, we by comparison look good, this is the british way of saying youre doing jolly well because were not. More after this. S huntsville, a. Aka, rocket city, usa. This is a very difficult job. Failure is not an option. More than half of employees across the country bring Financial Stress to work. If youre stressed out financially at home, youre going to be too worried to be able to do a good job. I want to be able to offer all of the benefits that keep them satisfied. It is the people that is really the only asset that you have. Put your employees on a path to Financial Wellness with prudential. Bring your challenges. The ayes to the right, 202. The nos to the ayes to the right, 202. The nos to the left, 432. So the nos have it. The nos have it. Neil yeah, the nos have it. 432 to 202. This wasnt only shot down, an attempt to get the brexit deal that was first voted on 2 1 2 years ago done, now itself is done. What happens after this . Britain trying to get separated from the European Union. Ashley webster, good luck with that. What happens now . Well, listen, dont forget, neil, the Prime Minister delayed this vote because she knew she would suffer a humiliating defeat. Guess what . Its five weeks later and what happened . She suffered and extremely humiliating defeat. So she wasted five weeks of potential negotiating time because brexit is now 73 days away. I just want to reemphasize those numbers again. Nos are 432. Yes votes, 202. A 230 vote margin. Twice as many people voted no than yes. The worst result for a sitting government in a parliamentary vote since 1924 in modern u. K. Political history. Extremely humiliating for the Prime Minister. Jeremy corbyn from the labor party jumped over it and said now is the time to change the government. Take a listen. And im pleased that motion will be debated tomorrow. So this house can give its verdict on the incompetence of this government and pass that motion of no confidence in the government. Ive never seen Jeremy Corbyn so fired up. He was practically leaping out of his seat. But bottom line is, i dont think he has the votes to unseat the government or win a vote of no confidence. Its purely symbolic. That leaves us back where we started. The Prime Minister with a deal that she cant sell to anyone and she has three days to come up with Something Better in the e. U. Sitting over in brussels saying hey, we gave you the best we got. Its a very, very political paralysis, brexit paralysis, whatever you want to call it, but its not good and its regards to the markets, they dont like uncertainty and it gets worse and worse. Neil but not in our neck of the woods. Theres a prevailing opinion among system this what ales britain and europe helps the United States. Like a haven in a storm. What are people telling you . I think thats right. China is slowing down. The u. K. And brexit in paralysis. Where toes the money go . Which economy is humming along fine . Its the United States. Neil all right. Thank you very much. Ashley webster that just for these records have been donning a british accent, which has come in very handy for these purposes. The same with my next guest. Heritage foundation gardner from brooklyn. But for the purpose of this segment will be coming from the united kingdom. Thanks for your patience. What happens now . Americans are saying, whats the big deal . The big deal would be what . That britain cannot extricate itself from the European Union that seems to be falling apart nicely on its own. What is going on . Yeah, i think the big news today clearly is theres no rile support in the house of commons for theresa mays very weak need e. U. Withdrawal deal. So that deal has been shot down in flames here. I think the best course of action now for the british Prime Minister is that britton will move forward with a no deal march 29. Neil why didnt they do that in the beginning . By now we would have sorted out a lot of the issues that keep popping up. That would have been a far better approach. Thats the reason they should have kicked it off saying britain is preparing for a no deal. That would have guaranteed a better offer coming from the European Union. As it is, the deal offered by the e. U. Is a humiliating deal for Great Britain and parliament rejected this deal 118 conservative mps voted against it. The Prime Minister has to declare that shes going to move forward with a no deal and declare that once brexit is implemented in march, that she will step down in favor of a new conservative Prime Minister that will lead britain in the brexit era. This is a Prime Minister that is living on borrowed time in downey street. Her support is eroding by the day. We do need to have new strong leadership in Great Britain. Leadership that is fully committed to the brexit process. A Nodeal Brexit will be a very good solution for Great Britain under which Great Britain can get their 18 free trade agreements including with the United States. It will be great for the british economy, great for the American Economy and great for freedom on the world stage. I hope thats the course the Prime Minister will take us. I expect she will win the vote of confidence in the house of commons and has to pursue a realistic policy that will restore fully british solve neil we had some problems here. What is at stake here. What theresa may finds himself in, 2 1 2 years ago while and up and comer in her party, she was among those not favoring britain separated itself from the European Union. She went gung ho after the vote and was chosen by her party to lead the party after the former Prime Minister was forced to step down. This is bedevilled politicians in this country for the 30 odd months as the back and forth has been coming along. I showed you our stocks. The belief that what is ailing them will help us, a lot of the money that is nervous abroad will finds way here. Often times that is wrong. The knee jerk response today seems to be that, that and better than expected earnings. Not across the board but whatever our problems, we are doing better than they are across the pond. Well keep an eye on it. Meanwhile, were in the 25th day of this partial government shut down. Theyre trying to do everything they can to get back to business as usual. Good luck with that. We are getting word that the irs is recalling 46,000 workers from furlough to start handling tax refunds without pay. There was a move afoot today on the part of three federal government workers unions to try to make sure that their members getting forced to show up on the job, not getting paid for it could get paid. A judge slapping that down saying theres no authority right now as things stand to grand that. Tsa, other federal workers must continue working with the understanding that when the government reopens, then and only then will they get their money. Stay with us. In fact, not one single democrat her
