Attempt to divide its country over hong kong protest will be met by crossbody and shattered bones. Okay. Now you know why investors were not entirely okay with the trade deal that might not be much of a deal just yet. To fox business susan li, cross between figity and furious. Good way to put it, neil. There is so much to sift through and a lot to prove in the trade truce. Chinese state media sounding more skeptical than the white house with one of the most widely speculated propaganda papers saying the champagne should probably be kept on ice, at least until the two president s put pen to paper. The peoples daily warns there are no winners in a trade war and both parties must not fall into a lose lose trap, not optimistic, but there are positives to take away. U. S. Tariff on trade goods will not go up to 30 tomorrow, though no rollback of septembers tariff hike and december ones are still on the table. There is good news, also, for u. S. Farmers. China will be buying 40 to 50 billion in u. S. Farm goods. We dont know over what period, but if that is over a year, that is almost twice 2017 levels. Treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin says sealing a deal should be done within a months time. Execution work to be done on the document, but this document is substantially done. We made a lot of progress and our expectation is this will be concluded and signed by chile. Arguable both sides need a deal. Slows the rate of growth and a quarter of century this year and exports fell more than expected last month, which is not good for exporting nation like china. Beijing has other concerns closer to home. Look at hong kong. 100,000 taking to the streets, urging congress to pass the hong kong human rights and democracy right this week, which, neil, add pressure on chinas shoulders. Neil thank you, susan li, much. To charles freeman, the point man for the u. S. Chamber of commerce. Charles, the chinese say they want more talks before signing off on this. Were you surprised by that . Charles not really. I think, you know, weve been burned before and im sure china just wants to make sure all the is are dotted and ts crossed on this down payment we are assuming is longerterm deal. By the time the president meets santiago, so doesnt surprise me much. Neil for the chamber looking for opportunities abroad, in frozen place here as talks went on and on and on, does it remove a level of uncertainty or because this isnt a done deal yet, just keep it uncertain . Charles well, lets just say were cautiously optimistic. Uncertainty is a real issue, has been an issue for our membership for sometime and important thing to us is to stop the bleeding. We really didnt need our members really didnt need additional pressure in the form of tariff hike this week and really dont need increase in tariffs in december. There is just too much pain. Neil charles, i did notice a lot of those tariffs pushed off, that will kick in tomorrow, theyre still on for a separate batch in middecember. Those have not been removed, so that does sort of dampen things a little bit, does it not . Charles look, this entire, all trade negotiations are a matter of carrots and sticks there have been a lot of sticks created and removing the sticks is, i guess, the administration carrot at this point. Im hoping that carrot gets played at appropriate time soon. Neil the more contentious issues, the charge china steals from us and steals from a lot of members and takes advantage of them and strong rememberas, you heard it a million times, that is a down the road issue. If well past the election issue, are you worried . Charles look, i mean, trade negotiations take a long time, we know that. Tying this to an election for our membership doesnt make a lot of sense. We want a comprehensive deal. There are a lot of challenges in u. S. china relationship, whether intellectual property, whether it is subsidies, Market Access barriers, all of these will take time, we know. Wed love to see it, we would love to have seen everything tied up in a bow and red ribbon by santiago, but were realists and recognize things may take time. Neil charles freeman, thank you. On wall street, buy on the rumors, sell on the facts. Were invest or bidding ahead ofa trade deal or not doing much buying after it . Wall street genius scott martin, and Francis Newton stacy. What do you think happened . Hey, i think it is so interesting, neil, we had so much enthusiasm on friday, but the close on friday, the market sold off hard. Today we have the uncertainty coming from the china state newspapers which is psychological thing. The more trump says hes enthusiastic, the more they will downplay it, they dont want to lose face they gave away the kitchen sink and going to the close, the markets do not fear this trade deal is falling apart. The vix index was on the low for the close. Neil you know, scott, i was looking at some of the details we know of the deal and it is a start. Better than where we were. Performance is not necessarily back to where they were prior to any of this stuff happening. So when people chew on this more, are they going to get angry or how do you describe it . Desperate. The despondent, maybe. You say phase one, neil, more like phase none. I agree, i think more time goes on, that we frankly dont get progress or go back, dont forget, we had a deal after buenos aires a year ago. We had 150page agreement they walked away from and now were 612 months later and still at this bargaining phase table, which is weird to me. And neil, the takeaway was, look at this n. B. A. Example from last week. There was a tweet sent out by a Houston Rockets gm, about hong kong, yes, unsolicited and unprovoked that china flipped out about and almost tried to cancel the whole n. B. A. In china for good. Does that tell you how they want to do negotiation . To me, it shows if we have hope they exactly to the table and technology transfer, ip theft, currency manipulation, we got to look elsewhere. Neil george, the president responded saying this is a good deal, substance of the trade deal, the jury is still out. It is improvement from where we just were. He says when it comes to countering this with the impeachment, kiss this economic advance goodbye if you impeach him. If you get rid of all of that, get rid of me, what do you think of that . That is pretty silly. China is new evil empire, one complaint with administration and how they are dealing with this, they are not being tough enough. It is sliding and sliding, how the chinese behave. What you have to do is make them feel the pain and want to come to the table and cut a deal. They are not in a hurry to do that, we are not putting pressure on them to get them to do that. The deal friday was progress, but limited progress. We have a lot further to go to do right by our country and what deal we cut with the chinese, whether President Trump or warren or biden in the future. Neil you reminded me that people base a lot of decisions, personal or business, on how they think things are going or their own sense of whether anxieties are real or so dangerous that they are going to hold back a lot of purchasing managers have been holding back on plants and factorys and hiring folks because they are worried about trade. Individuals who might argue similarly. Less when it comes to Christmas Shopping plans, but what do you make of that and whether this eased off that and helps everybody . I think the stakes are getting higher actually, for each side. I mean, on the trump side, you have impeachment and big ticket items like washing machines and things like that. You see, starting to see pricing increase due to tariffs and different traufenches of tariff. Consumers will start to feel pain. Consumer is strong in the economy in face of other numbers weakening. I think that china definitely came to the table last week to get tariffs for tomorrow off the table. But i dont think they are interested in backing down too far, i think even if trump takes the december tariffs off in interim, he will put them back on and hit them hard if they dont go along with what they agreed to on friday and that is what the market is pricing in. Neil this is a good quarter, not only for the economy, scott, but for markets, not across the board. How do you see this playing out now that part of this seems to have been partly ironed out, how is that for hedging it . Well, the good news, yeah, partly ironed out. I tell you what, neil, good news, the more this drags on, the more the market can look forward to get used to what were in as far as trade dispute. This is not news anymore throwing sand at china in the sand box. If this drags on, market can look at fundamentals as frances mentioned and look at earnings reports next few weeks, may portend future challenges companies have, but ways to mitigate challenges and market is able to look beyond those potentially. Thank you very much. Breaking news to pass along. Might have been worried about American Airlines plane. It is apparently repositioned, with no passengers onboard, landing safely in richmond. Again, no passengers on board, the Maintenance Team is reviewing the issue. This on similar run to last night, when a plane had to american plane had to make an Emergency Landing in raleigh, durham, this has nothing to do with that. Well keep you posted on that. This. Neil well, as liberal low blows go, they really dont get any lower than this, calling your fellow democrat a capitalist. Bernie sanders levelled that the at Elizabeth Warren. To peter doocy, site of tomorrows debate, how senator warren plans to respond. Peter. Peter after his heart attack, while recovering, Bernie Sanders has also been planning how to show progressives tomorrow night that he is further to the left than Elizabeth Warren. There are differences between elizabeth and myself. Elizabeth had said shes a capitalist through her bones, im not. That is because hes a selfdescribed democratic socialist, rising senator warren has not returned fire yet, no comment from her. She talks a lot about big structural change and shes written books about cracking down on big banks, but she does not want to move away from a capitalist system. She was a sponsor of bill called accountable capitalism act. Sanders tries to turn warrens belief in capitalism with rules into a liability tomorrow night, we dont know how the massachusetts senator would respond, but it would be something new that she would have to do. The two of them are longtime friends, believed to have had some sort of agreement not to go after each other during the democratic primary process, until now. Neil. Neil until now. Peter, thank you very much. Is capitalism that dirty a word . The democratic nomination for president , but does it risk you ever getting elected . President from the right says it is all wrong, from the left, kevin jay says the tired old charge from the right. Kevin, i think the jest of your argument, attacking capitalism is fair game for general election, as well . It is, but i will admit it is a dangerous game because we are a proudly capitalist country and most people, they like the idea of helping lift boats, but the idea of being fully socialist is troubling to people. We have to understand why there is popularity behind Bernie Sanders message. He had a Strong Fundraising quarter, highest amount raised of any candidate from small donors and most support this idea that the extremely wealthy should be taxed more. Gallup poll polls show 60 support for wealth paying more in taxes and people feeling the wealthy dont pay enough. There is support for bernie that endures in spite of rise of Elizabeth Warren and joe bidens consistency, still a strong, palpable grassroots support for senator sanders and i think it is because hes right about the fact the ultrarich havent paid their fair share and many people are left behind economically. Neil you know, as i think the way senator warren qualifies that capitalist statement is to say when it works, when it works for everybody. Her argument and maybe one tomorrow is it is not working for everyone. And dont sign me up or say i support that. But that is a tough argument to make in a general election where youre kind of looking like you are throwing the baby out with the bath water, how does that fall out . Sure there is a huge difference between Democratic Base and average american on this, especially Young Democrats and Young Americans in general, higher positive views for socialism than for capitalism. Look, at the end of the day tis funny two millionaires are throwing the word capitalist back and forth at each other, but i do think it reflects where the Democratic Base is and that is with actually saying one is socialist and nobody can say that more authentically than Bernie Sanders, he was praising the chavez revolution up until the point when they ran out of toilet paper, which case it became just not real socialism, so he certainly has the authentic credentials as a socialist going back. I guess that is now something to make hay out of in the democratic primary. Neil reverse course for breaking news, indulge me, you are pros at this. We are getting word from the white house, announcing it would be slapping economic sanctions potential on turkey for encouraged in northern syria, potential human rights abuses. 1000 american troops scheduled to leave syria will remain in the region to help prevent revival of the Islamic State. Kevin, i know im just throwing this at you, and you, as well. What do you make of that . Big reversal for the president. I think it is a great decision and i celebrate it because i think making the move the way the president did, sent a horrible message to our allies and also served to undercut the military and people who are highranking in our own government who didnt know he was going to do this, they found out about this on twitter. I think this was a very good decision and i think it will help to stem sort of the rising violence weve seen in the area. I think it is a good thing. Neil inez, president of the u. S. Will boost steel imports, tariffs on anything pretty much coming in or out of turkey. Other sanctions include not specified because of encouragement in syria. He is saying hes doing all of this in response to turkey overdoing it. But again, that is big 180 for him and to the generals and critics and supporters alike, a good 180. What do you make of it . The president is trying to balance between the promises he made coming in, to pull america out of a very interventionist Foreign Policy that it had under bush and to lesser extent, under obama. I think this is probably one of those instances. This was not a good test case. We had relatively small American Investment and there was a lot of fear for turkey to come in. Question is, would turkey start shooting at american soldiers and would there be american loss of life . That is the kind of thing where the president had to make a call. I think he made it in the worst possible way and this was one of those cases where for a relatively small investment, peacekeeping troops essentially could have prevented real damage to our allies and im glad the president reversed his decision on this. America has few allies that are as loyal, i think, as kurds in the region. Im happy the president has changed his mind, hes between a rock and hard place, he promised voters to pull us out around the world. Neil severe and across the board, thank you very much. This is fairly dramatic development, to put it mildly, for those tuning in. Word from the president of the United States, he reversed controversial call last week to withdraw the last 1000 american troops in syria. They are now going to remain there, the impotes of this, fear of revival of Islamic State or isis. The president making clear he will not be moving quickly on this and in fact, keeping powder dry and soldiers in the neighborhood. More on this and the significance of this, after this.
