The president will be in tulsa, oklahoma, tomorrow at an event where it will be jam packed with close to 20,000 people in the house. Lets get the latest from mike tobin in minneapolis where they are recognizing it for obvious reasons. Those obvious reasons are that the juneteenth celebrations are gaining momentum because of what happened in the twin citi twin cities. 1 of 13 different marches and demonstrations are taking place today. This is located in the parking lot of the target that was looted near the third precinct that was overrun by writers. The numbers are not that great, because it is just getting started. Much like the riding, these juneteenth events are spreading all across the nation. In new york, and antipolice marches with protesters chanting. A similar marches in oakland, california, and chicago. George floyd death motivating people both white and black. They essentially put it into effect freeing the. There has been an effort to try to make juneteenth a federal holiday and or a state holiday for decades. But now, Major Companies like google, major universities Like Georgetown University are making juneteenth a holiday. This is why more and more people are talking about it. Frankly, a lot of people didnt know it exists. The one thing we are hearing from the people in minneapolis is that the tragic death of george floyd is motivating people both white and black to talk about the problem with ra race. In the 1950s, there probably would not have been as many white people out here. Theres definitely a change. In due time, i think it will change. It is a beautiful thing saying a lot of different races coming together. Our penance for africanamericans, my coworkers that i brought out here. We are having a good time. Speak out that last person you heard from, Brad Robinson rode a letter to his Property Management company asking the company to recognize juneteenth and they agreed. Neil thank you very, very much. And chicago, where you are seeing a lot of businesses recognize the day by essentially closing and letting their workers go outside and celebrate it. Chicagobased to grab a hub tells us that 2700 employees have off today. Lift is recognizing juneteenth as a corporate holiday. Kraft heinz which is based here. Encouraging those employees to focus on service today. There are several juneteenth marches here in chicago. They just led one of the faithbased marches right here in the heart of chicago. At todays marches were celebratory and jovial with marching bands and dancing to celebrate juneteenth, a holiday honoring those who have been held as and the dead states. We did see antipolice sentiment and more calls for defining them. We want to show you some of the businesses that are still recovering from the recent riots and looting here. They are boarded up. The city is allowing takeout service. Some of these places probably cannot do that because of the damage to their storefronts. On a typical beautiful friday afternoon like this is, this area would be shoulder to shoulder with workers, corporate employees, tereus, and family. You can only imagine the hit that these businesses continue to take because of the pandemic and also some of the damage from the riots and the looting. Neil thank you very, very much. Dr. Cornell needs no introduction. He sat at these crowds after the tragic death of george floyd as a promising sign in that so many whites were among those that were participating. At that bestselling author with us right now. That is an encouraging development. We are seeing more of it today. Recognizing a day that very few whites knew about little more than a week ago. What do you think . It is always a beautiful thing to see human beings no matter what color bearing witness and being a force for good for justice. We have to recognize, my brother, that my brothers and sisters have always been part of the black freedom move. Elijah lovejoy, theodore parker. It goes all the way up to rabbi Abraham Joshua hester. Nonblack brothers and sisters have chosen to be persons of integrity and generosity, concerned about justice for everybody. And it will always go handinhand. What is different now is that we have larger numbers. No doubt about that. Larger numbers. Keep in mind, even the march on washington when dr. Martin luther king jr. Told america about the dream that he had, we had a whole span of neil there has been a good deal of attention that is making this day a national holiday. Republican senator among others for that. Secretary ben carson saying that do you think that should happen . Make this a national holiday. I think it is a good idea. I dont like the fetishizing of symbols. We are really much more about substance and trying to ensure that we not only stay in contact with the rich humanity of black people but that each and every one of us trying to make an effort to be forces of good for justice, whatever forms of injustice we are focusing on. As if this becomes a major concession as opposed to fighting poverty, trying to liberate the people who live in dilapidated housing, quality education with not enough resources and jobs and so forth. We have to keep in mind when we are talking about race, we are talking not only about hatred, we are talking about greed. Economics that dont allow black people to gain access to resources. Neil there has been a move by some of the protesters to try to Defund Police departments. Some to get rid of them altogether. How do you feel about that . Do you think that is going too far . What do you think . There has been a defunding of social programs, a defunding of the social the ability of regulating corporations, defunding of money to ensure that we have regulation of environmental protection. It defunding has to do with priorities. When people say defunding the police, they are saying, weve got to talk about Public Safety and people who are guardians in the community of Community Control and civilian oversight. Its not a matter of trashing. It is a matter of shifting our priorities. The last 40 years, the police as well as the pentagon have access to nearly unlimited resources. We need a shifting priority. Martin luther king jr. Was talking about when he said we need a revolution in our values. And then neil i dont believe that he ever talked about disbanding Police Departments. I want to get what you think is going on where a number of Police Departments across the country has added to, a minute. We are not all awful. We are not all doing what happened at the george floyd. There is even talk of a stick out of Law Enforcement security types that feel that they have now been painted all as awful human beings. What do you of that . I think weve got to resist any normal elastic views of any institution or peoples. There are always going to be decent peoples in whatever institution of whatever color within whatever group. At the problem is we have a culture within a Police Department where the police will not render each other accountable and knowing there is chronic to systemic mistreatment abuse of civilians. That is a larger institutional problem. Its not just a matter of bad apples and good apples in that regard. Keep in mind, you know, any time you talk about the fundamental transformation, you have to be very nuanced in the language that you use. Any time you are using slogans neil let me ask you about that, professor. I apologize. I did want to get a sense of where all of this is going. An issue that has come up again and again is whether the president is helping or hurting a problem. I know that you have been critical of his response and outrage to the black community. He said that he has done more for africanamericans as a president since Abraham Lincoln, and that prior to the virus in the shutdown of the economy, no president he said has done more to bring down the black Unemployment Rate and create more jobs for the Minority Community in general and that he was a big reason for that. So do you think the criticism of him that he doesnt care or worse, you know, targets africanamericans is justified . Youve got Abraham Lincoln. Of course, obama symbolically did much for black folks, but i dont think he did enough substantially. All three of those president s could be easily pitted against rather trump himself. Ive been really hard on trump. Hes got these gangster sensibilities. Not just a name calling. When we call black people the sounds of hes talking about my mama. Neil was a referring at the time to nfl players . Wasnt he talking about nfl players who kneel during the National Anthem . I dont think he was making a generic statement about africanamericans. But my brother, to call his mama that is in some principle i feel a certain hit and a certain heart in that regard. That is just the beginning of it. [indistinct] the point is this. There is no doubt that there has been prior to the virus, a reduction of the level of unemployment. And that is significant. I do. I give him credit, that is significant. But it is completely ove undercy tone, temperament, vicious namecalling, unbelievable attacks and assaults. The associated with black people, those are brothers and sisters of mine, too. That kind of xenophobic racist language simply cannot in any way be allowed making grand contributions to the grand freedom. Neil you mention it she mentioned barack obama. You mentioned barack obama, doctor. Obviously, his Vice President is the democratic nominee. And strong pressure on him to pick an africanamerican woman. It do you think that is important . Would you be disappointed if he did not do that . Well, you know, i am no great fan of great brother joseph biden. I will vote for him because i want to push trump out. Im no great fan of biotin. If he does choose a black sister, of course, a high quality candidate, we shall see. Ill not really holding my breath one way or the other you. [indistinct] neil okay. I want to make sure that trump makes his exit. Neil i think i know where you are coming out. Thank you very much, dr. Cornel west, bestselling author. We will have more including patrick Darrell Scott who has a read on the significance of this day that goes way beyond politics and who is ever in control of the Police Department or Mayors Office or governors or Mayors Office or governors r what you need . On the left of your screen what is happening in new york city. On the right, i believe it is Fran Francisco guys. These are happening across the country right now to remember juneteenth, the day we recognize formally the end of slavery in union forces shortly after the end of the civil war. Manny slaves at that time had no idea that Abraham Lincoln had freed them years earlier. By that time, he had been assassinated. That was then. At this is now appear to the message of this day including one from the president of the United States that remembers the plight my history and celebration on our nations unsurpassed ability to triumph over darkness. Cofounder of the new Spirit Revival Center and ceo of the National Diversity coalition for President Trump. Very good to have you, pastor. Im wondering. You mightve heard what cornel west was saying a little bit earlier that he doesnt think the president shares these goals and looks after or have much interest in the black community. How do you feel about that . Professor cornel west knows better than that. For the sake of his own political experience, he tries to deny the obvious. If you dont like the person for their wares that they speak, then look at the works that that person has done. The works are undeniable. Me being a man of god or a pastor, the bible says that showed himself by many infallible proofs. Im not trying to compare trump to jesus. You have historic reform. Opportunity zones. The first step. Hes also done some symbolic gestures such as designating dr. Martin luther king jr. s home as a national online. First black heavyweight champi champion, jack johnson. There are things that hes done that obviously demonstrate the fact that he is not antiblack, he is problack. The fact that donald trump will not pander for certain black leaders in the Democratic Party irritates them. He is who he is and he has done what hes done, and hes continuing to do more. Hes been a great president for the black community. He has been the most proactive president for the black community in my lifetime. I was born during eisenhowers administration. He has the 12 president that i have lived under it. Hes done more proactively for the black community than any other president and i have known. Neil if you were born under the eisenhower administration, you are almost as old as me. I give you a lot of credit. Let me talk a little bit about the economy and all of that. Many of your religious colleagues, particularly africanamerican community, pastor, dont like the tone. He uses divisive language when his heart might be in the right place, but he sends a mixed signal. What you think of that . Do you know what . He has a tone in public that a number of people have in private. They dont like the fact that he is transparent enough to be the same person in public that he is in private. That tone is when you are looking for an excuse to not like somebody, you will pick anything out of the area. They are not upset about Donald Trumps tone. They are upset that he will not pander to our community, and he will not pander to others. He is his own man. He is who he is. We know that about him. It is what it is. Neil all right, pastor. Got it. All right, thank you, my friend. Stay young. I got it. Thank you very much. Pastor Darrell Scott, in the meantime, the president is getting ready to go to tulsa tomorrow.
