A 23yearold American College student from california is among the dead. Thousands of french soldiers have been deployed and first attractions have been shut down. Investigators say the attackers wore identical suicide vests. Laura the violence in paris has also sent shockwaves here in des moines. About 15 minutes after the first event, a second group opened fire where the band eagles of death metal were playing. One of the victims is an american, a 23yearold student from cal state called naomi gonzalez. Police killed the suicide bombers and the vests blew up the others. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility. Nation, calling the attacks and act of war. Outside of the concert hall, a french pianist played john lennons imagine to honor those killed. Laura the violence has sent shockwaves everywhere and Michael Lavalle is leading a delegation of Des Moines Embassy club members hundreds of miles away from paris in the small french town of montbrison. If terrorists were going to hit the u. S. As well, according to tom connolly, they would have hit id hit at the same time. Todd tonight, we have exclusive kccis stacey horst and steve karlin are inside the spin room at cartwright hall. In light of the attacks in paris, cbs news significantly reworked its plans, focusing on terrorism, national security, and foreign relations. The first question went to front runner Hillary Clinton about how the current and ministration be viewed as underestimating the threat of isis. Hillary clinton there is no question in my mind that if we summon our resources, both are Leadership Resources and our tools, but our diplomacy as well and development and law enforcement, sharing of intelligence in a much more open and cooperative way. Todd they started right off the bat in the democratic president ial debate getting to the paris terrorist attacks. Laura Stephen Stacy zsteve and stacey are in the spin room live on drakes campus with our debate coverage tonight. Stacey yes, they are waiting for the surrogates of the three campaigns to talk about how their candidates did tonight. Steve we will hear from those of folks in just a moment, but the debate will open with a moment of silence for those victims in paris and then the candidates shared their thoughts on the candidate on the situation there. So a large focus on paris during this debate. And cbss marked ocean Mark Tauscheck has more on that. We ask you to join us in a moment of silence. Mark how to deal with the middle east led to Hillary Clintons vote in favor of the war in iraq. Bernie sanders i think that was one of the worst wars in the history of the u. S. Hillary clinton i dont think that the u. S. Has bulk of the responsibility on the region itself. Bernie sanders i would argue that the disaster us disastrous invasion in iraq has unraveled the region completely. Hillary clinton i dont think we are at war with islam and i dont think we are at war with all muslims, we are at war with jihadists. Martin omalley lets not fall into the trap of thinking this at all. This is the first line of defense. Dangerous place, but the world is not too dangerous place for the United States of america, providing that we act according to our principles. Hillary clinton id. Think you can paint with a broad brush. Complicated region of the world. The i dont think you can paint this with a broad brush. Complicated region of the world. Bernie sanders they are going to have to take on isis. Todd right now certainly a big talker on social media. Hillary clinton saying that isis cannot be contained but has to be defeated in direct contrast to president obamas announcement earlier this week that isis was contained. Now lets go over to steve and stacey. We had candidates drying distinctions amongst themselves, and Martin OreillyMartin Omalley tried to do that. Steve how did he do . He was on the john kasich road. He was not quite as annoying as john kasich at the republican debate, but again, he was on that road. We will see after tonight that he was helped. Stacey security was a big issue tonight in light of the attacks in paris. Lets have a listen as to what was said. Hillary clinton this election is not just about electing a president but also choosing a commander in chief. I will lay out in detail about what we will do with our friends elsewhere in coordinating and effort against the scourge of american scourge of terrorists. Martin omalley the world is a very dangerous place but it is not too dangerous a place for the United States of america, provided we act intelligently. Steve denis, there was also some language about not wanting to address isis and radical islam. There were some republican president ial candidates who want to have the president address the terrorists as that. An Interesting Exchange there. Dennis i think the main problem for the democrats here tonight is that there was approximately 1. 3 billion muslims in the world and what ever the difficulties that the u. S. Has with particular extremists, part of them is that you cant to war on 1. 3 billion people in the world. So i think there is an effort on the part of the democrats to enlist muslims as allies to defeat jihadists. Steve with the current political climate, does that work . Dennis this is difficult, this is difficult. Many people ask, where are the political moderates in muslims . That is key to the democratic approach, just as multilateralism to the democratic approach works. Sometimes they want us to go it alone because we are the meanest, toughest country in the world, orwell, we should or, at least, we should be. Steve all right, dennis, we will talk a little bit later. Hunter who talked to undecided voters. Shaina . Shaina it was interesting to see people react to the debate. We didnt really see people shift from one candidate to the other. Nobody felt that conflicted about the beginning of the debate. Pretty much everyone agrees that Hillary Clinton took that part of the debate. You are saying that she was in her element and that she was able to shine. What do you say about her Foreign Policy experience . I think she has the most experience and i think we could say that that is where she had shown shone. Shaina what do you think about governor omalleys response . I like how he referred to boots on the ground is something we should not talk about. Peoples children and husbands and wives and we need to think about that. Shaina it was a very spirited watch party. I look forward to sharing more of their thoughts with this debate. Act you. Back to you. Steve and kevin got to ask about the cost of college. Kevin you want to offer free tuition and Public Colleges. A couple of questions about this. 63 of those who enroll graduate, so isnt this throwing a lot of money away if we are looking at one third of these people who are not going to complete college . Bernie sanders no, it is not throwing it away. It is an extraordinary bottom line now, in america in 2015, a person [inaudible] stacey ok now cynthia folder fodor is in the spin room tonight with the representative from the Bernie Sanders campaign. Cynthia i am with simone sanders. Simone i dont know where bernie is at, but he could be headed to a watch party or he could be taking a moment to breathe or talk about how great he did. Senator sanders really had a great evening. The discussion on wall street was really the middle point of the night and he set the policy the theme of the night is that senator sanders was right, so we are very proud as to what he did. He demonstrated that he would make smart and tough decisions when it comes to defending our nation and he is the right person for the job, so we are very excited. Cynthia thank you so much, simone, for coming over. Back to you, steve. Steve thank you very much. And i am not entirely sure where we should go right now. Stacey i am not sure right now as well. Steve lets go back to todd and laura in the studio. Todd and we will get back to steve and stacey in a few minutes. Laura lets talk about the iowa hawkeyes. Todd they had a tough day, andy . Andy yes, they began early with upsetting oklahoma state. Iowa and minnesota and the hawkeyes trying to get an open for the first time they had a bootleg rushing touchdown, but they just had a trick play a couple of minutes ago and right now iowa is clinging to a 3328 lead over the gophers. This lead is with a few minutes ago and we will have highlights from this game plus all of the action from ames and other sports stories a little bit later on. Laura thanks, andy. Todd now lets check in with jason i will break 68,000. I owe 44,000 in student loans. My plan, the new college compact, says you should not have to borrow money to pay tuition if you go to a Public College or university. And you ought to be able to refinance student debt. And i dont believe the federal government should be making a profit off of lending to young people who are borrowing to be able to get their education. We have got to make college affordable. Im Hillary Clinton and i approve this message. Now only ford offers 750 black friday bonus cash on select vehicles, on top of ford friends and neighbors pricing. That doesnt happen every day. Its an inside deal, now for everyone. Hurry for a limited time, get 750 dollars black friday bonus cash on select vehicles, on top of all other low ford it all ends november 30th. Todd welcome back to postdebate coverage here at Drake University. Steve karlin and stacey horst and kcci is here. One of the most interesting portions of the debate tonight is the whole kind of, how are you going to pay for it kind of we are going to hear from Hillary Clinton a Bernie Sanders and what they have to say on this issue right now. Hillary clinton i will pay for it by, yes, taxing the rich more, closing corporate loopholes, and reducing other kinds of favorable treatment. I can do it without raising the debt and without raising taxes on the middle class and i can make it reasonably manageable on our budget so we can be fiscally responsible for the same time at the same time. Bernie sanders it will not be as high as the number under dwight d. Eisenhower, that it will happen. I am not that much of a socialist compared to dwight d. Eisenhower. [laughter] [applause] steve that might have been the laugh line of the night. What did you think about that exchange which meant so much to so many people. That so many people . Dennis how do you pay for it. Secretary clinton suggested a number of ways. She said the numbers added up. Bernie sanders, senator sanders, said the same thing. On the other side, senator ted cruz said the same thing, saying that the numbers will work. That will come out to wash later in the campaign. Stacey any distention between clinton and centers on these things . Dennis aside from different amounts of they want to pay for taxes, they are both committed to the idea that in some sense, people have a right to an education and shouldnt have to go deeply into debt to get it, so i think they share that view. Steve thank you so much, dennis. Lets go over to shaina and economics was a big part of shaina of course, steve, and there were a number of Different Health care concerns. Lets talk with one individual here. I support a singlepayer system, but i am leaning towards hillary. The democrats fall hard for the aca and we have to support the aca. It has survived every repeal vote in the congress and it would be nice if we had a governor, the biggest applaud line, to have a governor support of aca, it would be nice if well marked, the biggest insurer, would wellmark, the biggest insurer, would bring premiums down. Shaina one piece person even yelled out i think i just changed my vote, i think that was you. What went through your head when that was a heck of a comment to make and sadly, a reflection on our state. But i think overall, what we are looking at is, like my colleagues said, we are going to have to make these reforms and we are going to have to pay for them by ponying up. All of us. The entire nation. Shaina thank you so much. A lot of fear with that discussion. It was a very informative debate for our voter panel. Steve and stacey . Steve thank you very much. Stacey i want to stand it back into the studio send it back to the studio with todd and laura. Todd thank you. Laura lets take a look at that forecast. Andy we will see a few peeks of sunshine in the morning. That sunshine looked absolutely gorgeous out there. This is out in fayette, iowa. There were beautiful hues on the horizon out there and in the metro, you can see it is pretty dark out there, it is nighttime, after all. That wind is still sustain out of the southwest at 15 miles per hour. That is what has helped us stay relatively warm today and it will keep us relatively warm during the morning hours. As we head into the afternoon, up to 63 degrees. Notice the cloud cover increase. I dont think we are going to see any rain tomorrow. Into sunday evening and monday morning, there are more chances of rain going to roll in. We have one more day of the good stuff. You can see that this does bring more moisture with it. Futurecast shows spotty showers. As we had into the overnight, again, that is going to bring a chance for that. Get out and get out early, because that sunshine is going to be fleeting as the way the clouds are going to make their way in. The bulk of that rain will hold off for monday, though. You can see a decent amount, at least half an inch, as these clouds roll through. Not that much of a washout on monday. But there is plans on monday through wednesday of us picking up rain through that span. This cloud cover will bolster the temperature some. Tomorrow will be the warmest day out of the eight day by far. Upper 50s to low 60s for the rest of the days. We do have one more day left in the 60s, i guess. You have to wait until after tuesday. Then temperatures tumble here. The lows will be back down in the mid to upper 20s. The cold air is coming. No snow in the forecast yet. Take it vantage of the warm stacey all right, jason, thank you very much. We are back here in the spin room, live. Kevin, how did this go. Go . How did you feel about it . Kevin i wish we had time to cover more issues and to get the candidates to expand on their issues. We were trying to compress so many issues and especially what happened in france and a reemphasis on terror. It is hard to try to get everything in the, but my overall impression was that i think it was a really Good Exchange of ideas and i think there is a lot of good contrast between all three of the candidates and you saw some fireworks up there, not like you have to have fireworks. Stacey were you surprised at the fireworks . [laughter] stacey there werent too many fireworks in the first debate, but what did you think of the fireworks tonight . Surprised in terms of how the candidates let the sparks flew. Cynthia i think it was a more contentious debate until the terrorist attacks happen. Happened. The candidates called off their oncampus rally and, you know, they didnt want to show too much of celebration, so i thought maybe they would take a little take it a little bit easy on each other. Kevin they did take some shots, in particular, Bernie Sanders on Hillary Clinton, and i think if you look at the analysis of it, he would probably have to do that. Cynthia he did not want to go back on what he said during the first debate, and he said, we are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails. Steve what did you notice from this whole perspective because there is a lot going on up there . Cynthia i think i was more aware than if i were watching on tv as far as the candidates trying to get their word in and to get the moderators attention, and you look at it, you can see eye rolling and that kind of thing, and may be a smile or two somebody was saints of the critical. Kevin i would be very interested to see, and i reported it, but i would be interested to see of how that would play to the auditorium. There was a lot of reaction from the candidates and what they said, in particular sanders and then clinton, but also omalley as well. In auditorium, it was incredible. You couldnt see the moderator on camera, but he is trying to keep it calm. Cynthia yes, it was very difficult to hear when the each other. We were hearing them in our years our ears. Steve we are very proud of you both and we are very happy that you came up to spend a little part of the show. Kevin, a colleague of ours, it is great to see you doing us, ansteve welcome back to postdebate coverage with kcci 8 news. We are back here in the spin room. We have questioners here in tonights debates we have our own kevin cooney. Your question about immigration elicited one of the hot oneliners of the night. Is, Martin Omalley the fact of the matter is when it comes to immigration, because you will never hear it from that carnival Barker Donald trump, the truth of the matter is, net immigration from mexico last year was zero. Fact check me. Kevin Hillary Clinton, you said the president is facing legal troubles on immigration reform. Realistically, how could you go further with executive action . Hillary clinton my understanding of the law is that the president is attempting to exercise with respect to dreamers and their parents. Stacey all right, kevin, your reaction to their answers . Kevin good for omalley, as we saw later. I think that would have been one certainly, the republicans and in particular donald trump has been getting a lot of play on the immigration issue and has been turning it around like that. I think this is something that governor omalley had to do and i think secretary clinton also, when we were talking about how to deal with immigration, and what their executive order should be, it was exceeded with what she wanted to do. I think the remark of the night would be from immigration with governor omalley. Stacey you know, it was interesting, i thought it was an interesting question you asked, about the comprehensive part of immigration reform, whi
