Late last year, iowa representative Quentin Stanerson of center point announced he would not seek reelection in 2016, so he more on his family and teaching career. It brings into question whether iowas legislative system requires lawmakers to spread themselves too thinly between their work in the capitol, their careers, and life at home. Currently, iowa is one of 24 states in the us that have whats called a hybrid legislature, according to the national coerence of state legislatures. That means s these states, lawmakers spend more than twothirds of a full time job working at their state capitol. Their income from legislative work is higher than the parttime states ighlighted in yellow, but its usually not enough to make a living without another income source. Fulltime states are shown in green on this map. We spoke with several iowa lawmakers to see if a full time legislative system might work better in iowa. Every january, iowa lawmakers meet in des moines and start the process of drafting bills, moving those ones that make it through both chambers sending them to the governor for a signature. But marion state senator liz mathis says a lawmakers work goes well beyond the walls of e state capitol. 40 18 31 you also have, you know, legislating during the session, then its meeting with constituents out of session, then its also campaigning, making sure people know youre running for reelection, and its fund raising. For mathis, that often means getting to the Senate Chambers around 5 in the morning, and sometimes leaving at midnight. 40 47 01 i joke around, becausehen im out of session, its my Welfare Agency ob by day and when im in the legislature, its legislator by day, and my Child Welfare job at night. And that requires job flexibility. Now in his 30th year as a lawmaker, bob dvorsky knows finding a job or employer that allows flexible hours is tough to find. 57 42 50 somebody who normally works 8 toto 30 or 9 to 5 or whatever, a regular job, thats almost impossible for them to come here and serve. But coe College Political scienen professor Bruce Nesmith believes there would be limitations regardless of the states system. 56 22 27 legislators pretty much are on duty all the time, whether or not theyre fulltime legislators. State representative ken rizer of marion says at times, serving as a lawmaker reminds him of his time in the military. 11 52 57 it is kind of challenging to find work that wraps around the legislative schedule. Man y lawmakers we spoke with agreed the time requirements alone are enough for a person with a younger family to avoid running for office. 4 13 19 one of the key things they say is how will this affect my family, and how much time away . Representative dave jacoby believes location can be another limiting 3 15 34 im fortunate enough to live in coralville, iowa, which is 95 minutes away. So if i want to run home at night to catch a cello concert, or maybe watch one of the daughters play in theater or a golf meet, i have the opportunity to rush home, do that, and come back. But a fulltime legislature presents its own challenges. Mathis says while it may require less juggling of responsibilities, it would also require more money. 39 28 38 were fairly conservative with our spending here in the state of iowa. So, in order to do that, it would take a huge amount of money to change thaha to have people go fulltime. And senator rob hogg tells us there are benefits to having a partime system. When hes not in session, his family helps hiwith campaigning. 22 57 02 my wife and daughter at home, very engaged in the campaign. Its something were doing as a group effort. And he says being a parttimer gives him a chance to be a regular citizen, allowing him to stay better connected with the strurules of everyday iowans. 24 55 59 spending time with our work, making sure the bills get paid. Its strenuous, often thankless work, no matter how well a session goes over with voter but these lawmakers say there are few things more rewarding. 42 20 23 ive got to tell you, in the end, its worth it. Its really worth it. Compensation for lawmakers working in fulltime leslatures tends to be much higher than in hybrid states, according to the National Conference of state legislatures. For example, in 2015, california paid its lawmakers a little more than 97 thousand dollars a year. Iowa started at 25 thousand, with those in leadership positions making slightly more. Week and in tonights sunday night spotlight, Josh Christensen talks oneonone with head coach rick heller. And im joined right now by iowa baseball head coach rick heller for the sunday night spotlight. Coach you guys had a historic season last year with your first ncaa tournament appearance in 25 years and your first ncaa tournament win in more than 40 years. What did it mean for you guys to bring iowa baseball back. It was big. We had a great group of seniors and good leaders on that team that reallhelped change how things were going. The great thing is, that group left a lot for the group coming back this season. The culture that they established was there when we started in the fall, the expectations were high, the bar was set by those group of seniors and hopefully this group will carry it forward. Were surprised about the season you guys had last year . It was great year. I dont think it surprised, in fact, by that time we were pretty upset we didnt win the league. No, it wasnt a surprise. That group knew going into it what they were capable of doing. The big offseason was tyler peyton deciding to come back for his senior season despite being drafted. Were you surprised he decided to come back . Yes, i was surprised that he didnt sign and i think all of us were. And i say that early in the spring as the draft drew near we knewew what tylerss numbers were. In reality, he could have signed in the seventh round, but he holding out for what he thought he was worth. He stuck to his guns and he knew the value of him comimi back to school and getting his degree. He also was in a very good place, said a l of good things about the program and he wanted to come b bk and try to help this team. What do you like about iowa city west grad Nick Gallagher . A lot of things i like about nick. First of all, last season he came in and did a good job in our midweek games. Got hifeet wet, always gave us a chance to velocity is up, his breaking ball is gotten better, which it was good when he first got here and his changeup is really good. That was the one pitch that he and coach brinkman have been working the hardest on. If he was going to have a chance to step into the weekend rotation was that third pitch had to be developed. Right now, his changeup has looked really good. Every year, teams lose players. But you guys lose four or five starters. How do you feel about the replacements . Those guys will be tough replace because not only were they really good baseball players, but they werertremendous leaders. That was one of the reasons why last years team was so good. Thats going to be the big question with this team is there are a lot of new faces. Are we going to have that kind of leadership from within . I think were on pace to and weve got some guys who have stepped up and i think are really doing a good job. The iowa Baseball Team is hoping to get back to the ncaa tournament and now to First Alert Storm Team meteorologis t chris havely for your final tion of learfield sports. Announcer uthoff hits a standstill three. Gesell, his three is good. Excellent Ball Movement again. Hawks have numbers. Jok for three, its good heres woodbury. Popup jumper, left in the lane, down it goes. Dominic uhl will g right around hisisan and the twohand overthehead dunk.
