The College of the canyons a community college in Santa Clarita was turned into an evacuation center last night and since then about 400 people have taken shelter here the Red Cross has set up cots and organized meals and gymnasium 1st state mental health services and pet care are also available overall the mood is. Surprisingly calm of course people are eager for any information about their homes and their neighborhoods but many here today say as long as they and their loved ones are safe they feel Ok As one woman here with her teenage daughter put it I have insurance for the house that is Casey our jobs and a Scot and we do have some information on some evacuation orders being lifted officials in Kenyan country say that now those include residents between white Canyon and Sierra highway south of plum Canyon and north of Soledad Canyon in addition homes south of the 29310 South Stan Canyon area and homes south of l.a. County Fire Station 132 to Placer Rita Canyon can be repopulated as well and just now evacuation orders have been lifted for the area along highway at Linda Vista West that also will be repopulated by the way the northbound 14 has been reopened California communities are hardly out of the woods yet even with these forced power outages to revenge new fires huge swaths of Northern California could be left in the dark this weekend p.g. News this is All Things Considered I'm Audie Cornish and I'm Ailsa Chang it has been exactly one month since the White House released a rough transcript of President Trump's call with the Ukrainian president below Demers Alinsky in that time House investigators have heard testimony behind closed doors from a number of people connected to the story bits of which have been leaked we wanted to look at how the messaging from the White House has evolved over the last few weeks and how President Trump's allies have tried to remain in lockstep with that message even as it collides with new facts dribbling out so we brought in n.p.r. White House correspondent Tamara Keith Hello All right let's start at the beginning here on September 25th the White House says just released a transcript of President Trump's July 25th phone call with Ukraine's President Trump asked for a favor and then brought up investigating the Bidens and the 26000 election can just remind us what did the White House have to say about that call the White House said it was a perfect phone call essentially nothing to see here absolutely perfect phone call with the new president to be afraid that was a 1st to call and the remarkable thing is how little has changed here was President Trump today I had a perfect conversation with the president the right person he just really does keep saying that same thing and has really adapted to what has been a rapidly shifting story outside of the specifics of the phone call yeah and another line that we keep hearing from the president and from the president's allies is that there was no quid pro quo there was no quid pro quo of what will go with pro quo at all what the White House is saying is that there was absolutely no exchange of favors whatsoever Right so on the very 1st day when that call was released the White House accidently sent its talking points to a lot of people who they shouldn't offend them too when they got released in the very 1st line of those talking points say no quick. Pro quo or anything else inappropriate about the conversation between President Trump and President Selenski no quid pro quo perfect phone call those have become sort of the calling cards of the Trump defense much like No collusion no collusion no obstruction no not the line that was repeated again and again during the Russian bust a geisha Ok so that has been the repeated montra but a lot has happened I mean there have been these text messages that have been made public now there's been testimony from a building where the president's top diplomat in Ukraine today up here on Capitol Hill in which he lays ahead of the committee president did make military aid to Ukraine contingent on Ukraine investigating troops political opponents So how has the White House adapted its message in light of all that largely the White House hasn't changed its message though there was that one disastrous press briefing last week where Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney completely undermined the White House message on a quid pro quo I have news for everybody get over it there's going to be political influence in foreign policy any ended up having to walk that back completely and since then the White House and their allies have fully retreated back to the old refrains of perfect phone call and no quid pro quo and they're much more focused on process right mean Republicans have been arguing that the Democrats have been doing this all behind closed doors nothing's been in public view yes that is the new argument that Democrats are holding these closed door depositions leaking out only information that would hurt President Trump nothing that would help him trying to bring down his poll numbers and President Trump has complained that Republicans simply aren't doing enough to defend him Republicans have to get tougher and fight we have some very great fighters but they have to get tougher and fight because the Democrats are trying to hurt the Republican Party for the election but meanwhile one of Trump's allies Lindsey Graham from South Carolina says the White House needs to get more serious about these impeachment inquiry proceedings I think they're working on getting a messaging team together you know I was involved in Pietschmann of President Clinton. I know this sounds weird but Clinton look what he did what he did is he had a war room he had people that were focused on fighting the impeachment so that President Clinton could focus on being president and that's what Lindsey Graham argues President Trump needs to do but here's the thing. I don't have heaves everyone talking about the I'm the. I did nothing wrong that's what President Trump says but inside the White House there is a raging internal debate about how to handle this whether they need a dedicated impeachment defense and what it would look like and while all of this is happening Democrats are continuing to move forward with the impeachment inquiry and President Trump's message has really changed in a month that's n.p.r. White House correspondent Tamara Keith thanks so much Tam you're welcome now let's turn to the u.k. In the case of the $39.00 migrants who are found dead inside a truck in London British police have arrested 3 more people on suspicion of manslaughter that's on top of the truck driver who was detained immediately the victims were 1st thought to have been from China but as N.P.R.'s Frank Langfitt reports some may have been Vietnamese the Vietnamese embassy in London says a number of families back in Vietnam are asking if their loved ones are among the dead one is the family of farm Trami 26 who had been trying to cross the English Channel with the help of smugglers on the evening when the refrigerated trucking container came to Britain by ferry from Send her family this frantic text I'm sorry Mom my path abroad didn't succeed she wrote according to a screenshot posted by a human rights group an annoying mom I love you and dad so much I'm dying because I can't breathe the family says they have not heard from her since people mils the Deputy Chief Constable of Essex Police said it would take time to a dentist by the dead we gave an initial state on Thursday an action to say care whether this is now a developing picture. I September not be drawn on any further detail and so for me I do. The case in process is approved by Her Majesty's coroner have taken place mills or should anyone who can identify the victims to come forward even if they are in Britain illegally I can assure you that your information will be received in the strictest confidence and no criminal action will be taken against you if some of those who died in the container were from Vietnam that wouldn't surprise Shalini Patel the human rights lawyer with many migrant clients she says those from Vietnam all stowed away on trucks heading across the channel and that there are Jews journeys began with poverty and death back home for instance one client told her he borrowed money from loan sharks to open a restaurant which failed people write more money and you don't get so much to pay that money and then obviously. You'll be able to earn more money now ruled with you know good night all of this will be a joke. But that job turned out to be growing pot and police arrested him in a raid he. I think 14 months in prison this is so common and the enemies individuals that we represent and especially the men and they all wacky kind of houses Patel says Vietnamese women have tended to end up in nail salons and doing sex work Emily Kenway works for Focus on labor exploitation an advocacy group she says even migrants trafficked into legitimate jobs are scared to go to police because of the consequences one of the main 2 was traffickers used to control their victims and keep them terrified as they tell them if you run away if you seek out immigration authorities are going to find you they're going to lock you up and send you home smugglers place migrants on trucks crossing the channel every day Lorenzo Sakyo who runs alkaline a transport company near the port of Dover says some use refrigerated containers to conceal the smell of human cargo from sniffer dogs and Renzo son David the company's operations manager says more often migrants last year. Been curtains on the side of trucks and just jump inside the people that wanted to come out but they so desperate to come out and it's I get a chance possible this tragedy isn't the 1st of its kind in the year 2000 authorities found $58.00 Chinese people suffocated in a refrigerated trailer in Dover Frank Langfitt n.p.r. News London. In almost every airplane accident it's not just one thing that goes wrong it's often a series of mistakes cascading into bigger problems that is what investigators in Indonesia concluded happened in the crash of a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max N.P.R.'s Russell Lewis has more on the new report last year's Lion Air crash was the 1st for Boeing's new 737 Max Jet Not long after takeoff from Jakarta the flight crew wrestled with the plane as it pitched down uncontrollably and plunged into the Java Sea killing all 189 people today in Jakarta investigators release their long awaited report into the. Lama at a news conference they faulted the airline for questionable maintenance but they were scathing in their criticisms of Boeing blaming the design and certification of the 737 Max they zeroed in on a new flight control feature called m cas a feature that wasn't even in the aircraft manual on this scratchy recording from the briefing Indonesian investigative chairman nurture he oh a 2 Mo said pilots were completely in the dark father of not aware of. Them and to go about how to. Be on the flight 5 months after the Lion Air crash an Ethiopian Airlines $737.00 Max went down under similar circumstances killing all $157.00 aboard and after that incident the plane was removed from commercial service worldwide in a statement today Boeing said it's addressing the Indonesian recommendations to enhance the safety of the Macs which among other things had a single point of failure on a key cockpit instrument the doomed both jets shame mount quest teaches advanced aircraft operations at Florida Institute of Technology So I think when you really need to consider ways to simplify the entire process not just for good design but also for the humans that are in the system like the pilots in this case so they have better feedback and they know what to expect for Boeing. The bad news comes almost daily this week it reported its quarterly profit dropped by 50 percent and Boeing c.e.o. Dennis Mullen will testify before Congress next week the 1st company official to do so since the crisis began for months now Boeing has promised an updated software package to fix this plane but company engineers and federal regulators keep finding additional problems further slowing the $737.00 Maxus returned to service Russell Lewis n.p.r. In a 61000 here in k.c. Our w. My name is Larry thanks for joining us for this Friday evening edition of All Things Considered. For the rhyme some areas in Kenya country now being repopulated this of course are caused evacuations caused by the tick fire which has burned at least $4300.00 acres it's destroyed at least 5 maybe 6 homes at this point firefighters have yet to do an assessment on all the homes that may have been damaged or destroyed in this fire so what that news still left to come the big news of course is the winds which are begin to lay down now are beginning to lay down getting wider as we speak red flag warning supposed to expire tonight at 10 o'clock so that is good news bad news is that these winds may pick up again come Sunday afternoon through Monday as well as we could get gusts again $35.00 maybe 40 miles per hour so the hope is that firefighters get a handle on what's going on out there in the next couple of days and take advantage of the winds that are that are easing right now for sure. Now on this Friday evening Santa Monica 10 eastbound slow from basically. Get some pockets of slowing 91 westbound This is east of the crash cleared there and us and traffic backed up to the 5. From n.p.r. News this is All Things Considered I'm Audie Cornish and I'm else itching almost one year ago on October 27th Berry worker was hiding in a storage room at the Tree of Life Synagogue as he listened to gunfire on the other side of the door he said he was on the phone with 911 operators but was unable to breathe much less speak to them when it was all over 11 congregants were dead police say the shooter was a man who had expressed views before entering the synagogue Barry Weber joins us now to reflect on that day last year thank you very much for taking the time to talk to us it is my obligation not so much my pleasure but my obligation to. The anniversary of the shooting is this upcoming Sunday and I was hoping can you talk a little bit about what it's been like to try to move through this past year. I can say that it has been bittersweet. The bitterness in not seeing the members of our congregation that we always saw on a weekly basis but specially this holy season and I happen to be a member of the choir at our synagogue and not only that to be in a different building with different surroundings but to look across the altar where the rabbi stands and not see 2 of the 3 faces that I would normally see there was very very on holiday. To me it was a very emotional time for me it's going to be hard to go through the coming years without them. I I understand that earlier this me you decided that it was time to walk over and enter the Tree of Life Synagogue again what made you want to go back and be up close to that place well I had been given a kind of a gentle push by a gentleman named Daniel Agger who had been injured in the original shooting and he had been asked a similar question as to how he can go on how he can go forward and if he could ever go back into the building and his answer was I can't allow the shooter to control my life going forward. That struck a note with me so with my psychologist and with my faithful wife and with the security person who happens to be a vice president of Tree of Life building I walked into the building and what was that like for you to walk in for the 1st time since last October I paused going down the steps because that's where I was brought face to face with the reality of the shooting to begin with. One of the young men who were skilled actually his body was on the steps. And I was taken by the arm by the security guard he said you can take the elevator down I said no if I don't go down the steps I'll never get I'm never accomplish what I want to do right. So I went down the steps I walked into our room. It was quite a
