Question for you to view profile. Dave Ramsey as practice more people dead for a. Laugh from the headquarters of Ramsey solutions broadcasting from the Dollar Car Rental studios that's the Dave Ramsey Show for dead as cash is king in the paid off home mortgage has taken the place of the B.M.W. As the status symbol of choice I'm Dave Ramsey your host thank you for joining us open phones at AAA 825-5225 that's triple 88255225 starting off those hours going to be Joe in Texas Hi Joe How are you ill. Dave thanks for taking the call sure what's up so my girlfriend and I have been together about 4 years and we talk about getting married we don't I don't propose anything like that but I'd like to do right by her and not make her wait too long to get married tonight just started and I just started into the baby steps and I'm in Baby Step 2 how would you recommend saving or would you recommend saving for the wedding at this point. Well I think we I think we talk about an engagement and we set a date and then we back end of that what do you make a year in the $5000.00. What she makes a year about 20 How old are you to I'm 27 and she's 24 parents are going to participate in the help with the wedding. I would say probably but I'm just in the mindset of planning for them not to help. That's fair good all right well then I think you guys need to say what are we going to spend on a wedding given the situation so it would sound like this order of events I would get engaged I would set a date and then I would start talking about budget on a wedding or say we're going to set the date based on the budget for the wedding one of the 2 but when you don't need an expensive wedding in a situation it doesn't make sense and you're going to kind of talk that through with her that's part of this process right and then you figure out if mom and dad are going to participate or not I appreciate your dignity in just trying to set this up in case mom and dad don't participate that's a smart that's a wise move on your part. And then if the so if they if they do help it's just gravy on the biscuit right I mean we just get to do a little better wedding and so if they don't help then you've got a plan so. How much debt do you have about $71000.00 and how much debt does she have she doesn't. OK so what would you think a wedding budget ought to be in this situation if you were going to get married like 6 months maybe term I like you that's exactly what I was thinking I think it's a 7 to a $10000.00 budget OK and. But you've got to get everybody on board and that's her. And you know right now this is a discussion that's happening between you and me and really in your mind so you've got a you know but you could put to if you stop your baby step 2 temporarily and you just pall of cash you could come up with a 10 grand by then OK and just that then once you've got the 10 grand then restart you're getting out of debt process and because you're not doing something here that . You know that's irresponsible I mean you're not comment going on he spent $35000.00 with this woman on the wedding this woman is not going to be happy I'm $70000.00 in debt I'm like 55 that would just be stupid right and so you know you're not doing that I want to call Jale. But you're being you know your numbers are about right and so it's a it's a $10000.00 delay and you're get out of that plans you have an $81000.00 goal instead of a 71000 or go OK that's why I would look at it and you just don't put the 10 at the front of the thing knock it out get married now we've got a $75000.00 income with which once we're married with which we can attack this debt and that's going to accelerate that and you know you know you make up any lost ground you've got there but and then the last piece of advice is once you are engaged and you have your date set and you have your wedding budget determine we're going to spend $10000.00 then you need to back into the actual expenses of the wedding and make them fit inside the $10000.00 it's not going to magically happen because nothing grows faster than a wedding budget. Yeah yeah I'm telling them and it'll be you know father of the bride the cheaper chick and it's a deal it's really there so you know you're going to have to you know you need to know what you go spend on the dress what are we going to spend on the reception what are we going to spend on the venue what are we going to spend on the photography because you can spend $10000.00 on photography you spend $10000.00 on a dress you definitely can spend $10000.00 on a reception which is usually your big line item by the way in a wedding budget for those of you that are uninitiated we've done 3 of them in the past decade so. You know but you just run it like a project right like anything else but that and if you don't have some boundaries and some agreement on it then everyone has there's a lot of people who emotionally influence the spending of your money that it's not their money. Everyone from the photographer that's emotionally influenced the person selling the dress is emotionally influencing everyone is emotionally crewing with you the whole time and if you don't have a line item for it that you say this is what we're going to spin and you and your future spouse are in agreement and you actually have that money in cash then you're going to you're going to get to the end of this thing and you're going to have spent 20 grand doesn't get away from it or 30 grand it will go away from you and that's what happens and it's just it because everything seems to be a big deal there's nothing in this budget there's not a big deal it's all up it's all a freakin drama all the way through so I man I like what you're doing but you got a plan execute the plan you doing good all right up next is going to be Vicki in Georgia hi Vicki how are you I'm blessed How are you doing better than I deserve what's up. I have 2 questions the 1st one being I was wondering if I should cash in my whole life insurance policy that I've had for about 35 years probably why are you sure are you stupid are you ill I'm I'm in remission so you're not insurable. I am insurable through work for just life insurance basic life insurance and. What do you make here. About 707-5000 how old are you if 6 how long you've been in remission 5 years good for you was a tough fight you did there kiddo. Like I said I'm very blessed Yeah you're a fighter too proud of you alright people count on your income to live other than you know my everything is paid for I have about 6000 dollars in medical bills for this year no kidding my house my no no. And so if I were to die without life insurance no one would be left homeless or without food. They would be taken care of because I have a 4 A one K. And I have my house there's no I mean you don't have any but I think a house on your income to eat now you know a pendant Yes I would catch that alive and absolutely have cash and I would invest it in something good because it's a shock so as an investment product it's the payday lender the middle class horrible but no you don't need the insurance so that's the good news but if you need insurance you have to keep because. With the cancer in remission this is the diagram shisha. For decades I've been saying that before anything else you need a will some of you may not know where to start and others are thinking I don't have 5 grand to pay an attorney well you don't need 5 grand you need a 130 bucks and 20 minutes go to mama bear legal forms dot com right now they put all the docs you need in your state in one place they're also giving my listeners 20 percent off by using the promo code Ramsey That's Mama Bear legal forms dot com Christians have an affordable incredible way to meet their overwhelming healthcare costs it's Christian health care ministry of health cost sharing ministry a better business bureau accredited organization members share to pay each other's medical bills it's not insurance it's Christians financially and spiritually supporting each other it's. So kind of a question I haven't heard out there yet my wife and I have a dream that we want to actually sell our home sell most everything we have move into an R.V. With here in about a couple years my daughter will probably be about 9 years old homeschooler Ready travel to us and we've done the best we can to kind of set herself up with this we completely pay off all of our debt once we started financial peace we paid off 80011 months wow I'm retired military so we have that income plus we'll have a little bit more income coming in to where we really don't have to have jobs and with the budget that we have learned to live by your teaching. The budget we have coming in the money we have coming in all of that is going to work out to where we can really just enjoy at least a year so my question becomes to save up for the camper and the truck to to make that purchase we'd have to kind of step away from what we're trying to do which is pay off our house right now we have a $200000.00 home we've got about one 100000 equity into it right now we're putting $1200.00 extra a month toward the home we want to kind of pull that to the side and put it toward a savings account so we can cash flow the camper in the truck when we're ready to pull the trigger and move out when were you planning on doing the whole house will be 100 percent debt free when you plan on going to. We're shooting for summer of 2021 is kind of making the whole move happen so Mark 18 months or so yes or 24 months for 4 months 18 to 24 months about that time so you need to have the truck purchased by then the camper right correct we're looking at 40 to 50000 for the combo we're not buying new on either of them but they're going to be in pretty good condition newer vehicles because when they're planning to do the survey this adventure for how long. We're going to start with the 1st year with kind of get a plan for that and we'll see how it goes from there and at the end of the adventure you sell the truck in the camper and you buy a house and you start again correct your household. So we're going to sell or home currently you're how old I am 44 years old OK well why not yeah this way when it's what you want to do I mean that's that fair deal that's. You're living like no one else or later you can live like no one else and you've got a plan to do it you're executing on your plan why not. You're paying cash for everything you're live on a budget you're not going to run up a bunch of debt you're not overinvesting you're not buying a $300000.00 R.V. Which turns into $20000.00 in about 20 minutes right into that but by no you know used. Stuff and but reasonable comfort for the family of 3 and travel for a year maybe end up traveling for 2 because you've got the military and come yeah I think you know I don't it doesn't matter which order you do it in the end of 24 months whether you bought the truck 1st or paid off the house 1st at the end of 24 months the house is sold in the truck as purchased so the you still end up at the same place I don't care which one you do 1st the the only the only thing that we were looking as we did not want to have to try and finance a truck and finance the chemo and sell the house and pay it off to not doing this are not dealing with the cash now I mean you would sell the house and then go buy the truck if you don't do this. Right so you're not borrowing money right now you don't screw up this plan we're going to we're going good there for a minute. I know I know that with my own you know I'm good with that I'm good at how much I track and this is what I'm tracking with you this is fun yeah if that's what you want to do and your family's all on board and you know you paid a price to get here you're not doing huge harm to your finances by doing these moves and you're going to get to live a dream an adventure for a period of time yeah I think I think you do it and pay cash for it and all that means is you get less equity out of the house but you would have used the equity out of the house to buy the truck in the camper anyway correct so it's a you know it's just chicken egg thing right that's all it is yeah very cool Well thank you for your service and I'm glad you're able to do this. It's my honor and I think. Thank you so much for the program you put together and we went to our church and changed our lives or you know just a decision that we can make now based on the freedom that we have because we're not a slave to you know. It's just amazing and I appreciate that I got to tell you the impressive thing about you guys is just your use you not only learn to get out of debt and you follow the plan and all of that which is very cool and I'm honored that we were able to help you with that but the other thing is you just you develop these intentional critical thinking skills where you don't regress and you don't fall back in a hol
