Stumbo pleaded not guilty. Their lawyers argue they had no intention of committing any violence. A man convicted of shooting a Dubuque Police officer in 2009 will be in court this afternoon. Afternoon. Eddie chest is being sentenced for the third time. Chest was given two consecutive 25year sentences in 2011 for attempted murder and robbery convictions. He appealed, saying prosecutors breached a plea agreement but a judge upheld the sentence. The court of appeals agreed with chest leading to todays third sentencing. An explosion with Farm Equipment happened in rural dubuque county. County. Multiple Fire Departments were called to the scene. It happened late last night on North Cascade road. When fire crews got there they found a combine, tractor and grain cart in flames. All the equipment is now a total loss, with damages totaling about 750thousand dollars. Employees in cedar rapids are on strike today. They join thousands of fast food workers across the country who are demanding higher wages. Wages. Look at this this is a live look right now outside the first ave wendys in cedar rapids. The workers want the federal minimum wage to be raised to 15dollars an hour. Many fast food workers call what theyre paid now a starvation wage. Workers in iowa city and waterloo are also taking part in the strike. The strikes are also being used as a rally to raise support for president ial candidates in favor of boosting the minimum wage. At the iowa capitol. Capitol. Governor branstad says he wont delay privatizing iowas medicaid program. Program. Democratic lawyers wanted the state to push back penalites for providers that dont come to terms with private Health Companies by january first. The plan to privatize coverage has come under scrutiny recently. Branstad says the program will improve health care in iowa. Today students are getting shots to protect against mumps. Mumps. Until seven tonight university of iowa students under 25 can get the mmr vaccine for free. The shots are available at the iowa memorial union. The mumps have been a problem at the ui this fall. More than 100 cases have been reported on campus in the last few months. A new clinic is having their Ribbon Cutting today mercy is opening a telehealth clinic at the hyvee store on edgewood road northeast. Its the first clinic of its kind to offer onsite, diagnostic telehealth services. Mercy officials tells fox 28 news its in response to the demand for convenient healthcare services. The clinic will start seeing patients in a week. The hawkeye Football Team will learn tonight if its any closer to making the college and gold came in at number nine when the first playoff rankings were released last week. Wearing flipflops, Karla Hoffman traveled 59blocks in honor of her husband rick who died from the disease at age 59. Karla walked from third avenue southeast to saint lukes hospital, handing out pamphlets along the way. Were not asking for money, just get knowledge and lets talk about it. Sometimes conversation can do more than money. Money. Carcinoid cancer is very rare and oftens get mis diagnosed with other illnesses. The other boy was arrested. Right now the Security Guard is being treated at a hospital. A Second Attack took place in jerusalems old city. Police say a palestinian man was shot when he lunged at a guard. That attacker is also in the hospital. The investigation into the russian plane crash in egypt is turning to the airport where the plane took off. Off. The protests were centered on racial problems on the uofm campus, and a lack of response by school leaders. President obamas executive actions on immigration have been blocked, at least for now. A federal Appeals Court upheld a lower courts ruling blocking those orders. Under them an estimated 5 million Illegal Immigrants would be protected from deportation. 26 states filed a complaint over the actions, saying the orders were an overreach of executive power. The Justice Department will ask the Supreme Court to hear that lawsuit. Coming up on the cbs 2 news at noon, a program in waterloo is helping improve breastfeeding the son of a polish immigrant who grew up in a brooklyn tenement. He went to public schools, then college, where the work of his life began fighting injustice and inequality, speaking truth to power. The march of dimes also gave the state of iowa a c grade when it comes to premature birth. I spoke with a group in waterloo called centering pregnancy who is seeing improvement in these areas. Areas. A new baby gets oos and ahs from every direction, nat pop of people talking to the baby or oogling over the baby but before the oogling comes lots of hard work and preparation from mom. Morgan schmitt this is Alexander Curtis, he sleeps a lot and a pretty happy guy. With a cry and a head full of hair, Alexander Curtis came into the world in october at 6 pounds 12 point 6 ounces. show morgan oogling over him hes morgans first baby so you can imagine how many questions she had. Being part of a group in waterloo called centering pregnancy was a huge help to her. Amy wright centering pregnancy is a model of health care thats really coming into the us with some force. Along with going to their scheduled checkups, expectant mothers also attend an educational group. Its the same number of appointments they have with the one on one but instead in a setting where the women all come together and share their experiences together. I think for a first time it was really good. It just made me feel more comfortable with what i was going through. The women hear from several experts like dieticians and lactation consultants. And they hold each other accountable with taking care of their bodies. During each meeting they take their weight and blood pressure. A lot of times theyll be like i just gained 10 pounds another participant next to them will be like girl what are you doing . The Health Center has even found some interesting stats showing how centering improves birth weight and breastfeeding rates. The key outcomes that we have been seeing is Black Hawk County historically has the average low birthrate rating within babies that are born here in the county. So we are finding the average weight for babies is about half a pound more for those that are in centering than participants that arent in centering. And the program end up breastfeeding their babies as opposed to 40 percent who just go to the clinic. We talk a lot about meeting our nutritional needs in group. We also provide them with healthy snacks to demonstrate. it made me more comfortable in this crazy pregnancy thing i was going through. This particualr group was diverse. They are each in different stages of life and different ages. Morgan said the group was intimate and she knows they all felt comfortable asking questions together. I thought it was really neat to hear what they were going through and how theyre preparing and Different Things they had come up with that i hadnt thought of. They came they laugh they giggle they cry they Grow Together they watch eachother Grow Together and it forms things theyll never forget. 10 it was fun coming i always looked forward to it.
