I've been a player here in the Boulder Denver area for 22 years. And I have played so many different styles of music. I played klezmer with Sheldon sands and how. Free music and jazz study jazz with our Landy and play with him and. Latin with Latin African. Bands and. Gypsy at right now I play gypsy swing with Gypsy sing review I played gypsy music and so I realized that there was a. That there was something else for me to be doing and it was a combination of all those and so forth and not so which is the name of the band came out of a desire to bring all those elements together with. Some great dedicated musicians and really really craft something different and I originally for us so. That's pretty much how it how it's begun and we've had one house concert and and it was very successful we had 70 people jammed in my house. And why do you do like just Japanese style. Japanese style find find a spot on the floor. And hang on the there Bannister's. And then we went very well and our next gig we got you know just through video taping that the. Dazzle jazz club in Denver wanted to give us a spot so we're going to be playing there. And that's very exciting for us. When we should get a taste of the music Sure well this is. A piece called Waiting and it's an original piece and the. You'll be hearing. A very good recording of. A house concert that is also includes children so. We have some little little little baby screams in there but we should take away take away from it and. The instrumentation is violin guitar bass and tabla So here we go waiting. And there was a lovely thank you so tell me a little bit more about like in forming an ensemble like this did you have the idea of what you wanted for instrumentation go out and ask people what people around you said then I want to play with you how how how did you pull it together well that's a really good inquiry. I think the idea formed. You know quite a few months ago about trying to create something new and then I think just putting it out there and just keeping my mind open to who would want to be a part of that. The musicians that that are a part of this are. Really excited about playing with them because. They all have quite a deep. Investigation into different world musics all on their own. Alexy else the guitar player is. Flamenco. Guitarist to study jazz and and police familiar with. A Latin land style. You know the plethora of Latin guitar styles and then Charlie the bass player both Charlie the bass player and Andy scale injure their fabulous musicians who. Both at different times went to India to study. You know to the Merced themselves and classical Indian repertoire on their instruments and so it's you know they bring so much and then they've got all these different other avenues of exploration that they've they've gone into. And so you know. It was kind of one of those things where we would see each other and go yeah we should really play together and we should really you know and then finally I was like you know what let's play together. And do this you know I think you know we just needed something to kind of galvanize something to bring to the group together and. I happened to be that that influence and so I'm basically taking on a lot of the I say leadership benevolent benevolent leadership role. Of the van then but everybody has seen oh so much to offer in in in the music and in the playing and personally too so it's been great. And that seems so unusual to have a basin guitarist who've been to India to study it's not well the bass and the top player. Were deeply immersed in that yeah. I guess yeah yeah yeah that's pretty much it but yeah and he also plays. A number of different other percussion instruments that are related. And. He also makes. The polite and. The Russian shouldn't box that you the box you know play and play I know 2 purposes dual purposes and you think they're great they are really really great sound so he brings a whole huge. Diversity of possibilities to the group and and sort of Charlie because he's. You know besides being immersed in Indian music he's played all these different types of Gypsy and. American Americana you know and all the. Other to the types of I think ethnic musics It's very nice so when you 1st got together was there sort of hey let's look at this piece or did you just sort of start exploring different possibilities really well it's funny because the one thing that we all totally agreed we wanted to do was play music from Shakti which is John McLaughlin. Group in the seventy's and. That was kind of like a galvanizing vision for us because. We didn't we never hear anybody do it and we love the music so much and part of the whole thing of you know creating the group was. Wanting to play music that we actually listen to and love and so. That was I thought we'd play a track from from our version of that to you know for you guys tonight. Because of that yeah we can you and I were talking earlier because as I've mentioned we're celebrating the 40 years in 40 weeks and looking at. 979 in that era. Era that Shakti was active in performing and like I that wasn't what I was listening to at the time so I didn't get around to it Shakti experience until it was remember yes Shakti even when I came through and totally area yeah well do you want to share that with us sure this is one of the kind of their signature pieces and it's one that we wanted to tackle early on this is our version I mean we had a house concert about a month ago where we played it and we're still refining it but the server version of the Shakti. Piece called Joy to go. We've been listening to music from Fortunato here in the studio with me and my guest is Anthony violinist and kind of the. Founder of this group you guys have a performance coming up in Das on. January 28th we do very exciting what will people be hearing we're getting a taste obviously of the music like what percentage of your own compositions are improvisations versus performing other people's works. I've got about 3 or 4 originals that we'll be including in the province we're playing and I want to half so and then we play music from all basically all the people that we love to listen to like you were saying before so weak that to Shakti McLaughlin tunes and then a. Couple of Pat Metheny songs tunes and a bunch of chick Korea which we love. And somebody on the panty Stanley Clarke. Songs and and then thrown in that too is. We have a short Oh a Brazilian ashore with by a pack of daily Chia. And. From my years of Klezmer playing We've got a. Traditional klezmer tune that we do our own take out of which is really just a blast and then. And then our take on a couple of Gypsy standards gypsy jazz standards so it's really a mix of much of what you think that I think what it all has in common as as a threat is that. It's got a certain roots. Foundation the gypsy the Klezmer Latin and some African back I think and and how to bring it into the present you know for us with with modern jazz and our own take on it. So if somebody asked you to describe the group or categorize my ideal. Roots tradition jazz fusion really does that work yeah that works or. It interests me you know I think back to jazz fusion had its own kind of vibe oh say around 1979 right yeah. Not a lot of it worked for me were they she using back then. I think some of it was having a bit of a rock n roll vibe but it. I. I have that hard time putting my finger quite on it being it's I think one of the biggest things I realized was. Some jazz to me is just timeless. And a lot of that. Just comes off as very dated it was so of that time not all of it really warranted a like Shakti I think does fall into that timeless quality there's just something here so intriguing and exciting and yet so I'm always curious jazz today I mean I think part of what is making jazz to me I think jazz is actually a pretty alive form today yeah and a lot of that is because of the different influences because jazz is such an easy music to bring in those outer influences that makes it yeah I agree I think you know maybe that why it feels so dated I think maybe it is fusing jazz with more of a pop influence and pop always has some kind of dating quality to it it's it's just this year and next year is a different but I think when you bring in. Like like we're saying roots traditions and you bring in traditions that have hundreds of years of. Of a foundation and you bring jazz which has hundreds of years of foundation you know that that that's the timeless element that and it's fertile in terms of what can be what can be done with it and that's why this is so exciting for us you know and there are you know a bunch of folks who have. Who have done that. In terms of like jazz musicians like to Korea as one of my just creates just classics because of that influence you know. Yeah. So we should go out with another piece speaking of chick Korea. We can we can this is a cover of security and. Oh my favorite tunes and one of his most popular tunes is Spain. And so thanks for having me thank you for coming in and tell us one more time about the show it dazzle. It's January 28th 6 38 pm and with Fortunato. And tickets are on sale now so. We weren't getting so much music from different countries as we are today and the hybrid so the the more kind of pop elements hadn't arisen so much but obviously music was happening all over the world including this gentleman you might have heard of Ruben blad it released.
