Congratulations to hockey St Louis Blues this year Stanley Cup champs defeating a tough Boston Bruins thing here's what's happening. 210 today cereal and snack products popular with children contain. Traces of blood same that active ingredient in the weed killer round up according to tests from what is called the Environmental Working Group they said the tests found that glyphosate levels were above what it considers safe for children in all but 4 of the products now the $21.00 products that were tested are made by General Mills including 6 varieties of Cheerios and 14 of General Mills is Nature Valley products such as Nature Valley granola bars General Mills said Food safety is a top priority for the company which it says is working to minimize the use of pesticides on the ingredients it uses the f.b.i. Is now helping local authorities in the Dominican Republic to examine the mysterious deaths of 3 Americans who were staying at resorts in the island country in recent weeks since news of the deaths has bred relatives of 4 additional Americans who died there over the past year have raise some concerns although there are similarities in the 7 deaths most of the scribe was happening suddenly and several after an alcoholic drink was and by federal authorities have not determine whether there's any connection yet between any of the deaths it's weird some reach story now envision a future where children and their parents and their teachers and their doctors all believe there is a newer and safer method than drugs hooking up electrodes to the foreheads of kids to stimulate their frontal lobes every night a Magic Millions of children and during this stigma Dr Peter Bergen is with us his of course of medication madness Peter's this what you call these little tense machines Well they're they're related to tens machines it's very hard to see how much energy they're delivering to the court kids' brains but the basic story is that the f.d.a. Based on 32 children with. Approved hooking up children every night for as long as any doctor wants and past and current through their brain is bizarre and they tested it before we. For weeks 30 Any statistician will tell you you can't predict any kind of or you can't get any understanding on adverse effects and we do know that a lot of the people didn't like it they won't tell us why but only 18 to 32 would go on and on a 2nd trial if after the 4 weeks large numbers dropped out they wanted to go 12 months putting these kids on and only 3 of their 32 kids could finish the 12 months and this is been approved by the device group of the f.d.a. And I think about it it just chills my heart to think of children who have normal brain. These these kids supposed to be with the kids with that's normal brains and given them the idea they have abnormal brains and then subjecting him during that period of growth is when they brain's a change and growing a mile a minute and subjecting them to hours and hours of the electrical assault George it's a potential catastrophe and just what's going to do the Morat more moral sense of kids their identity that they're going to think of themselves more and more as machines and of course the vast majority of the kids bullies it's one more assault on our boys you know they get a little Adeline now and you're going to hook them up to electrodes and just sample . And just set up an organization called Stop the psychiatric abuse of children it's going to be a it's a part of our 501 c 3 and if people go to regen dot com g.i. And dot com to see a band there are about stimulants a.d.h. Drugs and electrical So all and they'll be able to. Dedicated phone line to call I don't know if I give that go ahead. Dedicated fall in line s. P. a C. Spak stop the psychiatric abuse of children back victory look that spec is a victory at the time and the person I'm working with and who's actually going to be directing a lot of it psychologist Michael Cornwall it's just really eager to communicate with people and I am too about what we can do to finally say no to what the f.d.a. Allows to be done the work is all it's not enough Peter and thank you that they're pumping these kids with neuro toxic drugs and now they're hooking them up to a lecture Oh geez thanks Peter Dr Peter Bergen his website linked up to arch would threaten Twitter feed. For the 1st time in the history of the United States the federal government has spent more than 3 trillion dollars in the 1st 8 months of the fiscal year the deficit has already hit 738000000000 dollars Well here's some good news for drivers in the United States gasoline could fall before low $2.00 a gallon for many Americans later this year retail gas prices have been falling steadily for several weeks now the average national price currently stands at about $272.00 a gallon for regular gas that's down about $0.17 from a high Ober has presented a grandiose vision of flying vehicles whisking people around cities at its annual flying car conference in Washington d.c. Now that was a day after a fatal helicopter crash raised to safety concerns about plans for increase air traffic over cities you might recall the helicopter that crashed on top of that building in Manhattan Well the right hailing company's entry into air transportation will begin July 9th with a helicopter service from Manhattan to j.f.k. Airport who were expects that customers will save an hour of travel time by buying a roughly 200 dollar ticket on the 8 minute flight Let's check in with the human brain Howard Blume Howard what do you think of this now over getting into flying cars and helicopters I think it's wonderful I think it's terrific you do work you're right they had a bit of walk or timing this week and that's an understatement because they were opening their conference America actually to Washington d.c. Which is designed to influence regulators they had Elaine Chao the head of the Department of Transportation talking about it which means they were pulling in a high powered people that their lobbyists are really good and then Monday we have the helicopter crash you just talked about with that was a crash into the high rise Axa equitable building which is a few blocks north of Times Square it killed the pilot it created what felt like an earthquake or a $911.00 style attack in the building and it forced an edge and evacuate. Which made Wilbur's air taxi plan sound suicidal but in reality think of it this way we're spy an airing of air taxis marks a tremendous jump and transportation choices for you and me and 850 getting from New York to California took you 6 months or more your odds of dying on the way were 4 percent today you can do New York to l.a. And 6 hours with nearly 0 chance of death or can you in reality the trick taste trip takes you up to 11 hours you have to catch a cab to the airport from the airport your final destination the rush hour traffic each of these cab rides cost you over an hour of time sometimes an hour and a half sometimes almost 2 hours and a total of between $80.00 and $110.00 each but you bring one of its rivals a company called later trying to cut down your total commuting time from 3 hours to more like 16 minutes that's both ways late initiate a continuous helicopter service from Manhattan to New York's 3 airports John f. Kennedy Airport Laguardia airport nor care for a few months ago not to mention trips to New York center of super rich summer homes the Hamptons and July 9th Hoover as you said is going to start Kaptur that's a service between lower Manhattan and John f. Kennedy Airport unfortunately blade and risk copter services as you mention are going to be out of your price range and out of mind or Crofter will be $200.00 for a one way trip bladers 195 dollars but whoever has plans to drop its price it is working with 5 aircraft companies to build a new generation of air taxis the new fleet will be electric which means it will leave sea silent I'm on the path for the helicopters of go out to the airports and the noise of those things on my yacht is enormous so this new generation means not only the means not just that they'll be silent the electric fact but they will be cheaper than the big question is will do that will they be safe which depends on how your who you are getting your facts from USA Today points off the number of deaths and helicopter crashes has dropped a half. Of what it was in the mid 1980 s. And we have a lot more helicopters flying flying to reassure you and me even further USA Today points out that 400000 people a year choose to take a helicopter tour of the ring Canyon and they've only been 5 fatal Grand Canyon helicopter accidents and a whopping 63 years that's half a century flight is more pessimistic it says a by one calculation is $27.00 times more dangerous to write a helicopter than to be in a car and by another calculation $85.00 times more dangerous However there is one last word of consolation for us one taxi failed the pilot who crashed his helicopter into a high rise office building in Manhattan Monday took off in fog and rain but he was not certified to fly in bad weather on the other hand the pilot who flies you to the airport will be a pro at least he or she will be until your air taxi starts driving itself oh no I won't I won't fly in one of those Thanks Howard welcome back by the way while they say that alien alien life could be hiding out on far fewer planets than we thought where is it that alien life is hanging out in the universe right now likely not on planets doing in toxic gases according to a new study it dramatically reduces the number of worlds were scientists will have the best luck finding e.t. And welcome back to coast to coast Charles Fishman with us as a Washington Post reporter he was part of the dedicated investigative team reported on the tragic space. Shuttle disaster the challenger after its aftermath and causes in the wake of his work on the challenger he went to flight school and got a pilot's license Charles has been writing about NASA and space routinely ever sense for 30 years Charles flew in 0 gravity has been inside a lunar module has been made up to the top of the pad $39.00 b. And has walked out on the arm that led to the Apollo capsule as well his book The latest one is one giant leap the impossible mission the fluids to the moon Charles welcome to the program I can't believe it's almost 50 years since we went there. It is it is incredible when you look at the you look at the spaceships they don't feel like they're from 50 years ago no they really don't and when you think of 50 year old technology back then that sounds like forever doesn't it well but let's be clear the computers that flew the spaceship to the moon and then the lunar module to the surface of the moon and back those computers work cutting edge computers at the time and your microwave oven has a lot more brain power than those computers or I bet our smartphones are way bigger can and in terms of abilities than what they had them not it's not even comparable if you have an i Phone sitting on the desk there next to your i Phone has more computing power than all the computers that were available to NASA for Apollo cash and it wasn't but that what that tells you though is something really important they did a lot of with a little bit of computing power that was available to them that were focused on doing calculus they were doing a lot of math we we you know play videos from You Tube That's right that's right they as a pilot what do you think of overs plans to helicopter people all over the place you know what I listen carefully to that because I rode from midtown Manhattan to j.f.k. Today 6.7 my. Of 90 minutes 90 minutes I left at 330 so I was not in the thick of things so that sounds really appealing and I hope a lot of people who are in traffic with me today do it. Take it from j.f.k. To Miami probably didn't cost $200.00 so I will not be signing up for a 200 hour 8 minute flight I should have just left a quarter of 3 instead of quarter for. My half hour that way i tell me how you got involved in writing about the one giant leap. You know I have been I've been fascinated by the space program I was born in 61 so the 1st moon landing I was 8 I have in my living room right now a record from the Gemini missions in those days. Companies captured the audio and put out L.P.'s they put out full size records within a month you could actually fill out a coupon in the newspaper the day of the missions and put in them below put a check for $2.00 and then a month later you would get this extraordinary you would get a record back and you could listen over and over and over again to the mission is it was one of those flexible records no if you know how to record friends Ok and and and so it's just a reminder that although we feel like we live in the age of instant everything and we do for me I literally remember sitting in my bedroom you know as a 7 year old listening to that Gemini record just playing the mission over so and then you you said I was a special reporter and I will tell you that. The astronauts are fantastic I spent 4 years learning about Apollo and the stories are incredible and I hope will unpack some of the outer ones tonight the astronauts deserve all the credit they have gotten they were incredibly hard working and also heroic. But there were 410000 people on earth who made it possible for those 11 missions to be launched into space 9 of which reached the moon capsule 400 that there were more people working on Apollo then in Vietnam for several years of the Vietnam War I wanted to tell that part of the story the part of the story of what it took to get the work done well you did you did a great job with it Does it irk you Charles when you hear people say we never went to the mall and you know you know why doesn't mean George 1st of all 1st of all I know we did 2nd of all the easiest way to prove that we went to the moon is really simple one of the great stories that I had never heard before is that during Apollo 11 while Armstrong and Aldrin were literally flying to the moon when they got there there was a Soviet space probe in orbit around the moon that had been launched 3 days before them called Luna 15 it met them in orbit and Luna fifteen's job was to fly down to the surface of the moon grab some rocks and dirt and race back to Russia both for Armstrong and Aldrin they wanted to beat us to the punch didn't know you know we didn't we know how the story came out they wanted to be on stage when if something had gone wrong with the lunar module and we had made it to the moon then the Russians because they well we're the ones who got the moon rocks 1st that's right and we did it without risking anybody and we did without risking anybody and you know what if we'd been cheating if we hadn't gone it was a real war the Cold War was a real war and a lot of times it wasn't that cold they were out at us in a minute they had ships they call them fishing trawlers stationed right off of. Kate Kennedy right outside the exclusion zone as as the as a newspaper wrote at the time the oddest thing about the Russian fishing trawlers was that they had no fishing net they were listening they were trying to jam radio communication if we hadn't gone to the moon they woulda busted us in the blink of an eye now what happened to that craft. Great question the Russians missed a mountain and that craft Luna 15 slammed into a mouse 100 miles an hour Oh but the Russians did they never sent people but in the next few years they sent craft similarly to 15 and they actually did succeed in landing robotically and and and and collecting samples and coming back let me say one more thing about the about the people and we may obviously get calls about this but about people who don't believe it you know what I've never met someone like that that you persuaded in a single conversation to change their mind I want to live in the world that I've spent 4 years studying where totally ordinary people who describe themselves as ordinary helped us do the most extraordinary thing that's for in human history if you want to live in a world of conspiracies where we didn't go to the moon you live in that world I'm going to live in the real world where it happened and where watching what those people did and learning about it can really give you some faith in where we're headed today I knew the latest or not Edgar Mitchell Apollo 14 he went to the moon and I believe the guy when he was. You know what there are 6000000000 pages that's 1000000000 with a b. Of documentation and I will tell you that it was easier to go to the moon even though it was impossible than it would have been to make up the 6000000000 pages and for years I read 2400000000 I think the right to point 4000000000. It's just I pinch myself because I remember watching it with my father Cronkite was on the year we were watching c.b.s. Ne
