But do you know the famous sing eer that sent them a telegm moments before . And what the dress rehearsal revealed . Good evening on this sunday night. And as we come on the air, late word of the worsening conditions in the west as a powerful system makes its mark. A mudslide north of San Francisco, just the latest emergency call. The images coming in from portland, oregon, tonight, trees down and damage from the powerful storm hitting several states. This car flipped over. So many accidents in the snow. And from utah, the frantic rescue effort after an avalanche. A young woman trapped under the snow for more than 40 minutes. Tonight, two new systems were watching. The forecast in just a moment here, but we lead off tonight with abcs clayton sandell. Reporter tonight, winter is whipping the west with floods, mudslides and avalanches. Its snowing in seattle. The streets of San Francisco are surging. Trees are taking out cars and cars are taking down power lines. Its so icy in portland, oregon, theyre sending out cell phone alerts warning people to stay inside. In utah, 21yearold ashley cox rushed to a hospital in extremely critical condition. Swept away by an avalanche saturday while snowshoeing. She was trapped for 40 minutes. Normally, the chances of surviving rapidly drop after just 15 minutes. As we recently learned when i was buried during an avalanche drill. One of the extra dangers for an avalanche victim is that when you exhale, your warm breath actually melts the snow immediately around you, and then that refreezes, which just traps all of the Carbon Dioxide that youre exhaling and makes it even more difficult to get oxygen. And in addition to snow, a foot of rain in Northern California is kicking loose rock and mudslides. Roadway is sloughing off. There was one house in jeopardy that we evacuated. Reporter the storm will soon be pushing east, after helping raise the water level in this California Reservoir nearly four feet. Not enough to make much of a dent in the wests epic drought, but a welcome start. Clayton sandell, abc news, denver. Clayton, thank you. The pictures from the west tonight. While in the middle of this country and in the east, millions are bracing for a monday morning commute tomorrow with wind chills as low as 40 below. Look at this tonight, a before and after from this winter to remember. The great lakes right here in warmer times, the five of them there in the heart of summer. Tonight, though, the view many of those lakes hard to make out because more than three quarters of them are now covered in ice. In fact, scientists monitoring them say theyre 78 frozen over. Thats the most in nearly two decades. I want to bring in meteorologist julie durda of abc station wplg with us again tonight. The temperatures tomorrow morning are going to keep the lakes frozen in place. It is going to be brutal. Its been a horrible winter with the wind chill factor. And because of that, again, we are dealing with some very cold conditions. Wind chill advisories across the midwest. You can see, expecting temperatures to be 21 degrees below zero, chicago, 25 degrees below zero in green bay. And that cold, arctic air spills all the way down to the southeast. Look at that. 13 degrees in little rock and nashville. A very cold start to the week here. Also tracking a storm system monday into tuesday. Yes, this is going to be another winter storm thats going to cause some chaos for our friends across the gulf coast states tomorrow. And as we watch this low developing along this cold front, we will see the possibility of freezing ice and snow for parts of the southeast, anywhere from mississippi all the way into the carolinas. The worst of the weather will probably be the Tuesday Morning commute. We have Winter Weather advisories in effect across the southeast, as snow, sleet is going to be a big issue for our friends anywhere from mississippi all the way into the carolinas. All right, julie, thanks for being with us this weekend. Its going to make for some very difficult driving in the south. And tonight, one more note on the weather coming in. A tour bus crash in pennsylvania near the maryland border. The roads snowy and slick. At least 30 people injured. One seriously, were told, when that tour bus overturned late today. And now to another difficult scene tonight playing out on two separate american highways. In each case, drivers somehow missing those warning signs and getting on the highway going the wrong way. In one instance, a witness, another driver with a camera in her car. She could not believe what was playing out right in front of her. We warn you, the images are not easy. Abcs bazi kanani tonight. What is he doing . Reporter a driver in such disbelief am i being mind [ bleep ] right now . Reporter she pulls out her cell phone to record an suv swerving through oncoming traffic this morning on interstate 275 near tampa, florida. In a few more seconds, it ends horrifically. The wrong way driver dying after slamming headon into a car of college kids. Four Fraternity Brothers also killed instantly. Here in california, less than three hours later, a driver went right past these warning signs onto the pomona freeway. Three vehicles mangled, six dead. A wreck so bad, investigators still dont know which vehicles most of the victims were riding in. Our hearts go out to the families. Reporter wrong way driving causes just 3 of u. S. Highway crashes, but they are deadly. Up to 27 times more likely to be fatal, killing an average of 360 people each year. Those wrong way signs often missed when drivers are too impaired to even notice them. Across the nation, 60 of wrong way crashes are caused by drunk driving. Investigators are still looking into whether thats what caused todays accidents. David . Bazi kanani right there on the pomona freeway tonight for us. Bazi, thank you. Next tonight, to a washington, d. C. Suburb on high alert this evening. Authorities investigating a possible serial killer. Many neighbors rushing to install peepholes in their doors after what happened to one of their neighbors. Abcs susan saulny is right there tonight. Reporter it was a brazen crime in broad daylight. A beloved music teacher fatality shot after answering a knock at her front door in alexandria, virginia, late last week. The murder striking at the heart of a Quaint Community just outside washington, d. C. People are kind of freaked out, because these things dont happen here. Its so sad, its almost surreal. Reporter the neighborhood was already on edge. Just three months ago, ronald kirby, a prominent local official, was gunned down inside his home by someone who entered without force. And the memory of the similar, unsolved murder in 2003 of nancy dunning, the wife of the late sheriff, is still raw. The three slayings happened within two miles of one another, leading residents to wonder whether a serial killer is on the loose. And now a manhunt is under way. The Police Released this sketch of a bearded man suspected of the latest murder. Many people in this Quiet Community are scrambling now to install peepholes in their front doors, so they can spot the suspect, should he try to strike again. Were going to do everything we can to catch whomever did this. Reporter the police say they have no motive in the murder, and city leaders are urging residents to remain calm and on alert. David . Susan saulny in alexandria, virginia. Susan, thank you. And now to the olympics in sochi tonight. The american snowboarder this evening and her victory. And the precious thank you she delivered right after. Jamie anderson, winning in the womens snowboard slopestyle competition, wearing that gold medal on the podium afterward, her arms in the air there. And there was someone else she was cheering for that got our attention. Also tonight, some disappointment for the american team, as well. U. S. Star bode miller far off the mark in the downhill. Hell have another chance to win a medal later. The medal count tonight, team usa in a fourway tie for second place. And abcs matt gutman is in sochi again for us tonight. Matt . Reporter good evening, david. Some here have called the slopestyle course the dreaded monster of the sochi games. But so far, american athletes have made a mint on it. Snowboarder jamie anderson, here grabbing her board and that gold, the second u. S. Victory in slopestyle. I couldnt really eat today because i was just so excited and so nervous. Reporter there to cheer . A neighbor from her lake tahoe hometown, who anderson calls her spirit grandmother. Shes the sweetest. I think mid 80s, and she made it all the way out here and to the course. Reporter those jumps so huge, the worlds best snowboarder, shaun white, last week called them too intimidating and withdrew from the competition. It wasnt much better for bode miller, the superstar of the downhill. Today, downcast, finishing eighth. Those racers clocking in speeds of over 80 miles an hour. There to cheer on u. S. Athletes like the u. S. Figure skating team, which took bronze today, hundreds of americans. Many of them, skittish about security. So, all this gear that youre wearing right now goes into the backpack you have yes. Reporter you put on the coat and you try to blend in . Yes. Reporter so, outside the olympic village, americans are hard to find. Have you seen any americans here . Of course, a lot. Reporter where . On the mountain. Reporter on the mountains. But the big buzz here, still the tweeted pictures. A british bobsledder nearly falling into this open elevator shaft. And american bobsledder, johnny quinn, finding himself locked inside a bathroom. Once i got out of there, and i put a towel on, i looked back at the door and im like, oh, man. Theres a giant hole. Reporter cratered by one of the big guys who ride in this tiny bobsled. Youre a sail. Youre being a parachute back here. Get down reporter and then cram themselves inside this tiny cocoon. As skill coach brian shimer tried to teach me. David, those bobsledders are so powerful, they can push that 400pound sled and go from 0 to 30 miles an hour in just five seconds. But well have to wait a week before we see them actually bobsledding instead of breaking through doors. David . But his work in the bathroom was pretty impressive. Matt gutman, thank you. And one more note about johnny quinns breakout from the bathroom. American teammate Jessica Smith tweeting out this picture of the two of them, pointing to his arms there, smiling about his bathroom scene, calling him her new bodyguard. Back here at home tonight, a new book on Hillary Clinton coming out this week, and in it, what some consider an eyeopening endorsement. General David Petraeus saying, quote, shed make a tremendous president. During her 2008 run, clinton criticized petraeus for his handling of the iraq war, but the two later forging a strong working relationship and a friendship during her tenure as secretary of state. The book is called hrc state secrets and the rebirth of Hillary Clinton. Next here tonight to a massive and troubling food recall this evening. Millions of pounds of beef being recalled. The California Company reportedly processing diseased animals. And Authorities Say they somehow managed to do it without inspection. Many questions tonight, and abcs linzie janis on the case. Reporter Officials Say the Rancho Feeding Corporation in california processed diseased and unhealthy animals without a full federal inspection. The company now recalling nearly 9 Million Pounds of beef products. An entire years worth of production. That meat described as unfit for human consumption, making its way to four states. California, texas, illinois and florida. Its not yet clear what outlets received the products, ranging from beef carcasses to ox tail and liver. There is a real problem at this company, knowing that theres a years worth of production, potentially, that is out there in the marketplace that was produced without that federal inspection, should make beef eaters wary. Reporter the usdas Food Safety Inspection Service says it hasnt received any report of illnesses linked to the meat. But eating it could cause, quote, serious Adverse Health consequences or death. A classone recall is quite serious. So, i dont know whether the agency is concerned about bacterial contamination like e. Coli, whether theyre concerned about contaminants from the spinal column, like bsc. Reporter inspectors say the problems were discovered as part of an Ongoing Investigation into the company. We reached out to the Rancho Feeding Corp and the company says, quote, we deeply regret any inconvenience this may have caused our customers. David . Much more to come on this. Linzie, thank you. And to a medical headline breaking tonight. Word of a new, smaller, nearly invisible device that could give new hope to the hearing impaired. This comes after so many of those images of children hearing for the first time. Abcs Mara Schiavocampo tonight. Reporter they are the unforgettable moments that speak to the gift of sound. Talk to him, daddy. Daddy loves you. Reporter you might remember little grayson. Can you hear daddy . Daddy loves you. Reporter deaf since birth, hearing his fathers voice for the very first time, thanks to surgery. Do you hear daddy . Yes . Yeah. Reporter or this woman, finally hearing her own voice with the help of an implant. Now, a new scientific break and able to charge wirelessly and remotely. I think its a really Exciting Development for the field of Cochlear Implants. Reporter while todays existing Cochlear Implants have several parts positioned outside the ear, this new chip eliminates the need for those things entirely, using the ears natural microphone instead of outside sensors, essentially offering patients a completely invisible hearing aid. Its a quality of life issue, in that one would have hearing all the time. Within the next five to ten years, we will see totally implantable Cochlear Implants for anybody. Reporter as we mentioned, if all goes well, that implant would charge wirelessly, or chargers could even be built into pillows, repowering the device while the patient sleeps. All very cool stuff, but david, still in the Early Research stages. Giving hope. Reporter a lot of hope. And welcome, again, mara. Great to have you with us this weekend. Reporter thank you, david. Much more ahead on world news this sunday night. The big flap tonight over flappy birds. Millions of americans have downloaded this game on their phones. And if you thought angry birds made you angry, why so many are upset about this game tonight. And later this evening, what we never knew about that moment 50 years ago tonight. What happened in the hours before that gamechanging performance . Whose microphone didnt work . And who was so upset about it . But with less energy, moodiness, and a low sex drive, i had to do something. I saw my doctor. A blood test showed it was low testosterone, not age.
