Wonderful return to life of two americans infected with the deadly ebola virus. Tonight, declared cured. Leaving the hospital in georgia. And these two pictures say it all. Dr. Kent brantly, highfiving his medical team today. It was 20 days after this image. Brantly getting out of the ambulance and walking into that hospital. He and the medical workers, sealed in protective suits. And we are tackling questions of recovery and contagion with our dr. Richard besser, in a moment. But first, abcs steve osunsami, who has been covering this story from day one, helps us live the drama of this day. Reporter for a missionary who nearly died after contracting ebola, there was good reason, today, for the cheers and applause. Today is a miraculous day. I am thrilled to be alive. On wednesday, july 23rd, i woke up feeling under the weather. And then, my life took an unexpected turn as i was diagnosed with ebola virus disease. Reporter a nervous but healthylooking dr. Kent brantly stepped in front of cameras with his wife. And then, he hugged every member of his medical team, who had to work in productive suits and bubbles but werent at all worried today. After nearly three weeks here, the doctors say hes cured. And now, even immune to the virus now responsible for more than 1,300 deaths in west africa. God saved my life. A direct answer to thousands and thousands of prayers. Im incredibly thankful to all of those who were involved in my care, from the first day of my illness, all the way up to today. Reporter families were praying for both he and his coworker, nancy writebol, seen here working at his liberian field hospital. It took a rescue mission to fly them stateside when they were sick. And they both received an experimental drug. Writebol was discharged tuesday. There was ongoing testing and ongoing feedback from the results. So, i feel extremely confident that these patients pose no public threat whatsoever. Reporter nancy writebols son tells us he has no concerns. His mom is doing better. She is doing well. Shes trying to get the strength back she had before comes down with the virus. Reporter the missionaries tell us the focus needs to remain on west africa. In liberia, its come to this. Police in riot gear have quarantined 50,000 people in a hardhit shantytown. Late today, we heard from the brantly familys church in ft. Worth, texas. They tell us dr. Brantly will be overwhelmed with the number of people who want to hug him. Diane . No doubt about that. Thanks so much, steve. Now, we turn to abcs chief medical editor, dr. Richard besser, veteran of the cdc. Hes traveled the world, hunting down viruses. On the question of contagion. They tested but how are they sure its not contagious anymore . They would not have found any virus in the blood and in the urine. The one recommendation Public Health officials make is to use condoms for about three months after infection. They should be free in the Community Without spreading disease. That is standard. And the whole news about immunity. Now, they are immune . That means they can go back and help their patients without risk . Theyre immune to this strain of ebola. Thats terrific news in terms of developing a vaccine. And also, youre right, about providing care for people. People who have recovered can be caregivers. Is there a final verdict on the experimental drug they were given . Whether that worked and made the difference . Im a bit skeptical, given how fast they say it worked. They need to do a study to find out, does it help . Does it hurt . Does it make any difference . Before rushing to judgment that it was a miracle. Thank you so much, dr. Besser. What a day this has been. And next, we move on to the other big story of this day. The hunt for the brutal killers that took the life of american journalist james foley. The three, mysterious figures believed to be behind the brutal killing. One of the men with what seemed to be a british accent. And now, the urgent worry about another american hostage and the details on that rescue mission that failed. Abcs chief investigative correspondent, brian ross, on the case with us tonight. Reporter with growing concern about the fate of a second u. S. Hostage held by i. S. I. S. , steven sotloff, u. S. Officials, today, defended the failed special forces rescue attempt into syria on the july 4th weekend. The mission was executed flawlessly after significant period of preparation and planning and rehearsal. And it turned out the hostages were no longer at that location. Reporter u. S. Officials say the secret, nighttime mission targeted a large i. S. I. S. Camp near raqqah, syria. It involved several dozen special operations troops, fixedwing aircraft and helicopters with Surveillance Drones overhead. Some 15 i. S. I. S. Fighters were believe to have been killed. The United States will not relent on our efforts to bring our citizens home and their captors to justice. Reporter the u. S. Rescue mission was launched after it became clear that no negotiations were possible with the i. S. I. S. Group, which had demanded a ransom of 130 million for the release of james foley. Fbi didnt take it seriously. We didnt take it seriously. Reporter people involved in the process say i. S. I. S. Hostages from france and other European Countries were set free after ransom payments of about 2 million each, paid in cash each, delivered by middlemen in turkey. Something the u. S. Has refused to consider. In 2014 alone, isil has gotten in the millions of dollars from kidnapping of western citizens. And obviously we believe very strongly that we need to cut off their funding. Reporter as the fbi steps up its investigation, some former hostages identified jim foleys executioner as one of the three british citizens the hostages nicknamed the beatles, who served as jailers, torturers and executioners for the islamic terror group. In a final, chilling email, sent to the parents of james foley and made public tonight, i. S. I. S. Said, you do not spare our weak, elderly, children or women, so we will not spare yours. Thats how jim foleys parents learned their son would die. Oh, brian. Well, as you know, the central question is, what will work to defeat a force as ruthless and implacable as i. S. I. S. . Abcs Global Affairs correspondent, martha raddatz, is here. What are they talking about today . Well, theyre going to continue these air strikes. And they have really been pounding those i. S. I. S. Targets in iraq. Theyve pounded about 100 targets since these air strikes began. But they said today at the pentagon, they are sure i. S. I. S. Will regroup. And chuck hagel, the secretary of defense, had some really alarming language, calling i. S. I. S. , an imminent threat to every interest we have, whether its in iraq or anywhere else. What about that phrase, imminent threat . Does that mean a specific target here in the homeland, in the United States . I dont think he meant that. I think he meant the region. But eventually, they could threaten the homeland. They are concentrating on the region now. I would not rule out air strikes in syria. The pentagon said that today. In syria. Okay. Martha raddatz, brian ross, following this story every hour. Thank you so much. And good to have you with us here in new york tonight. Back here at home, to ferguson, missouri, and a sign of chaos after Michael Browns death may be subsiding. The governor ordered a systemic withdrawal of the national guard. Overnight, there were fewer arrests. Law enforcement officials saying the mood was calmer and the crowds were smaller. And tonight, there are new questions about crisis and punishment in the financial risk that brought the nations economy and a lot of American Families to the brink. A landmark settlement between bank of america and the Justice Department. A record penalty. 16. 65 billion. So, what does the bank admit they did . Abcs senior justice correspondent, pierre thomas, has been talking to his sources all day. Reporter today, bank of america admitted to massive fraud. Fraud that cost thousands of americans their homes. Bank of america, merrill lynch, and countrywide, each engaged in pervasive schemes to defraud Financial Institutions and other investors. Reporter the junk loans were packaged as good investments. And when they failed, it led to a tsunami of bankruptcies and foreclosures. Igniting the great recession. Its like going to your Neighborhood Grocery store, to buy milk thats advertised as fresh, only to discover that store employees, they knew the milk that you were buying had been left out on a loading dock, unrefrigerated. Reporter todays record, nearly 17 billion settlement, includes 7 billion in relief for underwater homeowners. Its one of several big payouts by the big banks for past sins. Many bank executives, including the ceos of countrywide, jpmorgan chase, were hauled before congress for accountability. Do you understand this is a little difficult for most of my constituents to take . I think the entire industry shares some of that responsibility. Reporter one bank executive, former countrywide ceo, angelo mozilo, is facing a threat of a federal lawsuit. But today, once again, there were no criminal charges filed against highlevel executives. Banks dont commit crimes. Bankers do. And we know not a single banker is being held accountable here. Reporter Justice Department officials continue to say criminal charges could come. But six years after the collapse, many critics are skeptical. For the thousands of homeowners who lost everything, critics are blunt. Diane, they say somebody big needs to go to jail. All right. Thank you, pierre thomas. And now, we turn to a new sports headline tonight. Baseballs greatest hitter with an emotional plea for a new chance. 25 years ago, pete rose was banned for life, accused of betting on baseball. Now, hes saying, its finally time to forgive. What do you think . As abcs Clayton Sandell brings the debate tonight. Reporter he was charlie hustle, racking up more games, atbats, and, of course, hits, than anyone in history. Left center field. There it is. Thats number 4,192. Reporter but the man once destined for the hall of fame, was banned for life in 1989, accused of not just betting on the game, but as a manager, on his own team. Uhoh. Oh, boy. They better grab pete. Reporter now, a new baseball commissioner is taking office. And pete rose is renewing his plea. Get over it. Reporter telling espns Jeremy Schaap his quartercenturylong punishment is enough. You broke the cardinal rule. I did. How could someone who loved the game so much thats a good question. We all make mistakes. And i made a big mistake. Reporter his next mistake, rose says, autographing the legal document that sealed his fate. It was a mistake because i didnt read the fine print. To this day, i have no idea why my lawyers would accept a lifetime suspension. Reporter a lot of baseball fans still havent forgiven rose, now 73. The league told us today, its too early to say if rose might have a fan in the new commissioner. I have been led to believe that america is a forgiving country. And if you do the right thing, eventually, youll get a second chance. Reporter Clayton Sandell, abc news. And on monday night, our partner with espn, will air a special report, olbermann presents pete rose, 25 years in exile. Now, a trial in the headlines tonight. And not like what weve seen from a political couple in trouble. On the stand, former Virginia Governor, bob mcdonell. The charge, political corruption. But it was his very personal defense that riveted the country today. And Abcs David Kerley has it. Virginia governor, bob mcdonnell. Reporter he appeared the polished politician, with convincing confidence. Talked about a possible president ial candidate. But behind the portrait of bob mcdonnell, was the emotional wreckage of a troubled, dissolving marriage. She would yell at me, the former Virginia Governor told jurors at his corruption trial today, accused of working with his wife, to trade access for luxury gifts and cash. Thats why the troubled marriage is key to mcdonnells defense. Arguing that things got so bad, with wife, maureen, they couldnt communicate enough to trade their position for privilege. But prosecutors say businessman johnny williams, the ceo of a diet supplement company, provided the mcdonnells the use of his private jet, a ferrari, gifts including a rolex watch, on the governors wrist. 15,000 for their daughters wedding reception. In all, 165,000. But the former governor claims the businessman got no special access. I never thought i would be having to testify in a trial like this. Reporter painful admissions, emotionally reading a 2011 love letter to his wife, in which he wrote about the fiery anger and hate from you. You told me again how bad i am. It hurt me to my core. I am lonely sometimes. He went on to tell jurors that it got so bad, he said he would work until she was asleep in the governors mansion, to avoid contact. If convicted, both he and his wife could be moving into prison cells. David kerley, abc news, new york. And up next here tonight, how to be smart about travel scams. Something new. And tonight, we have a new warning about a scheme that could target you at a hotel. Abcs linsey davis shows us the scam that could empty your wallet. Reporter what started off as a pitstop in this new orleans hotel, ended up a major pitfall for christine bicek and her daughter, katie. Its about midnight. And our hotel room phone rings. So, i answer it. And its one of the ladies from the front desk. Explaining, i need your card number to put on file, otherwise you need to get out of the room. Reporter so, katie gave her debit card number and went back to sleep. I woke up and immediately thought to myself, theres something sketchy about that call. She checks her bank account and realizes all her money is gone. Reporter turns out, this particular scam is so common, many Hotels Across the country present their guests with warnings about it, including the best western, where christine and katie stayed. The American Hotel and lodging says provides regular updates to hoteliers on fraudulent activities. Like this one, the pizza scam. Youll find flyers under your door when you check into your hotel.
