Weve brought multiple causes of action against them, from public nuisance to destruction of Natural Resources to deceptive and falsification, to failure to warn. The Attorney Generals Office filed the complaint friday night against five Major Oil Companies, two of which are here in the bay area, chevron, and this one, conocophillips and rodeo. Climate activists tell us its about time somebody takes legal action. Big legal action against Oil Companies as essential as their products are to our daily functioning. They have they also kill us. And this industry has been giving with one hand and taking away with the other. One of the parties involved in the lawsuit is the American Petroleum institute. In a statement, they said this ongoing coordinated campaign to wage, meritless, politicized lawsuits against a foundational american industry and its workers is nothing more than a distraction from the Important National conversations and an enormous waste of california taxpayer resources. A big question is what this will do to gas prices that already risen in the past few years. The attorney general says the goal of this lawsuit is to hold the Companies Accountable for actions over climate change. It was caused by big oil. Who knew this day would happen and these results would happen. And they lied about it. And while they profited, ryan curry, abc seven news. Mayor shengtao and other officials spoke at a Community Meeting at Mcclymonds High School this morning, saying she left it to city administrator Justin Johnson to say why they couldnt get the application in on time. Even though everyone else did. Quite frankly, we just missed it. And so we failed in that in that in that space. And so there really isnt an excuse. All i can say is that well certainly look at this as an opportunity to improve and move forward. Johnson says appropriate action will be taken. He did not say what he called the lapse of a learning opportunity. Mayor shengtao says the city is getting Crime Fighting help elsewhere, though. We are actually on the ground creating those relationships at the federal level, at the state level, to ensure that we get resources to come back. This new brazen way of people committing crimes and then bringing them to justice. Tao says help is coming from the Highway Patrol. Six officers and a sergeant will soon be deployed within oakland and Alameda County is trying out a new strategy to recruit more Police Officers. Its offering the largest hiring bonus in the country, 75,000. And the police chief says its working. Abc7 news iteam reporter stephanie sierra spoke with him earlier today. I got to say the 75,000 figure certainly catches your eye. How did you settle on that . You know, there were a couple things that went into play here. We were looking to see how can we attract quality candidates here while factoring in the difficult housing in the bay area. What we had learned is that candidates were are considering their ability to afford housing in the bay area and we were able to look at what we could offer to candidates to try to help them overcome that barrier. And so we presented it to city council uh City Council Approved it. So five months ago. How many vacancies did you have and where does that number stand now . Sure. So when we first brought this proposal to the city council, there were 24 vacancies. Thats about 30 of the departments staffing as of now or ever since then, we have been able to swear in three new Police Officers. Last month. In about two weeks, well be swearing in four more in november. We have one more coming out of the academy in january, will have another four coming out of the academy. We actually received over 300 applications for the Police Officer position with alameda pd. This hiring bonus appears to not only be the largest in the country, but its certainly towering over comparable bonuses being offered at neighboring Law Enforcement agency gs, for example, San Francisco pd is hiring bonus is 5,000, which is on the low end. And san mateo pd is around 30,000, which was on the high end until now. Have you heard from other Police Chiefs interested in following suit . And do you think this will incentivize other departments . You know, i have gotten phone calls from different chiefs and different commanders from different departments looking to see how is it that they can improve their hiring practices. I believe the average vacancy in Alameda County is about 15. So city of alameda, the Alameda Police department was double that when we first brought this initiative forward. Police staffing across california continues to be a struggle. As of last month, the california Highway Patrol was trying to fill more than 1000 vacant officer positions across the state, according to the Public Policy institute of california. In 2021, the number of patrol officers per 100,000 residents of the state was the lowest it had been in 30 years. Since 1991. He slept up in the roosting area last night right next to the female. Right next to the female. Shes been preening him today. Theyve been sitting together. Gosh, they just love each other already. The couple says that wingo spent the day exploring his new home and his environment. You know, francis, i am excited for wingo and hopefully the new weather because its a little different from the peninsula to pittsburgh where it is. Its vastly different from the coast to inland areas. And that seems like love at first sight or match. Yes exactly. Were happy for wingo. Hopefully were happy with our weather coming up to well, if you like today, youll like tomorrow. And actually the day after that and maybe even the day after that. Thats the kind of pattern were stuck in. Heres live doppler seven. Its quiet in terms of precipitation. Weve got lots of clouds, though, and that will be moving in overnight. A live shot from sutro tower looking down at San Francisco. You see some of those low clouds starting to creep in across the bay. And San Francisco, 62, oakland, 64, san jose, 67. Palo alto, 65 halfmoon bay. Bit cooler, also at 63 degrees. And this time from emeryville. Were looking out west. You see those clouds there in the distance that will be coming in as we show you a lot of traffic on the bay bridge into San Francisco. So more low to mid 60s for everyone right now. Santa rosa, 62, nevada, 61, napa and fairfield at 63. Concord, milder at 65. Livermore 62. And this is a really cool shot from mt. Tam. Were looking south. You see a lot of the low clouds spilling into San Francisco. That blinking light is sutro tower which i just showed you the view from. So heres what you can expect for the forecast. Widespread low clouds, patchy drizzle overnight and tomorrow morning, partly cloudy. Tomorrow afternoon, temperatures will be below average once again and then this pattern persists into early next week, in fact, not till wednesday until we see a bit of a change. And the reason is this low pressure, its a cut off low, so its cut off from the jet stream. So its not going to move much over the next few days and its going to continue to bring us a similar pattern with the overnight clouds and the partly cloudy afternoons and some sunshine, too, for inland areas. So midnight tonight, well see lots of clouds over the bay. And then tomorrow morning, well see it spill in and then pull back. By about lunchtime, well start to see some breaks in the cloud cover. Well get a little more sunshine in the north bay. Well see some high clouds moving in. But we will get a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day. Most of the day and into the evening. Sunday night into monday morning lows tonight near 60 degrees. We could see some drizzle, especially near the beaches. And then tomorrow, look for highs to be very similar to what we experienced today. So that means temperatures range from mid 60s to near 80 degrees. San francisco, 68, oakland, 73. And well see those cloudy conditions even in the south bay , 77 will be the high in san jose in the north bay with a little bit more sunshine. Thats where well see some of our warmest numbers like lakeport, 85, ukiah 88. But even some inland neighborhoods will have a tough time make it, making it into the 80 degree mark, usually upper 70s for antioch and livermore more and thats actually below average. So heres the accuweather seven day forecast. Cloudy below average again tomorrow. That pattern holds not much change on tuesday. Wednesday is when we get more sunshine, more minor warming. We bump up our temperatures a little bit and then we have another area of low pressure. Now the models diverge a bit towards the end of the week. Some say a little bit cooler, some say warmer. So just so you know, for the first day of autumn, our forecast could change as we get closer to the end of next week. And so you know, if you like it, warm, you went inland. If you want if you stay at the coast in San Francisco, its going to be what weve seen the last day type of year. You get spoiled if youre in the city and when youre out. Fairfield was 85 today, and i think thats nice for the 60s. Now in San Francisco. But thank you so much, francis. Still ahead on abc7 news at 11.
